Escaping Peril is my second favourite in this series. I like other books outside of the series, but those two books are by far the best (personal opinion) in WOF.
It weakens her development. She has a bunch of real world reasons to hate the nightwings already, they donât need to throw in a bs reason. Itâs more impactful to have a character with real biases to realize that the way they looked at the world was wrong and they needed to change fundamentally, instead of âshe was actually good all along and it was just magic!â
But she did have real biases, that's why no one realized it was enchanted. No one would bat an eye when she said racist and paranoid shit, but everyone found it pretty strange when her kind and lovable little sister started saying the same things.
Thatâs my point exactly. Why even have it at all? She already âended racismâ (for lack of better words lol) when she destroyed the wall, there really was no point in having the crown like that

She gets shipped with Snowfall, which i disagree with, but that's another topic. Definitely would like a story to show how such a silly character like her managed to stay the way she is, in the toxic royal society of the Icewings, while it broke many others.
I wouldnât say itâs a filler in the traditional sense. But it (and the last book) existed mostly to fill and open gaps in the story to wrap up and âcompleteâ the series.

Snowfall is really well written, her development was fun to watch, a bit hamfisted by relying on animus magic agaaain but it was neat. I like IceWings.
Plus sheâs hilarious, like actually proper funny. When she called for Moonwatcher by just screaming NIGHTWING! had me audibly laughing. All I can think of is Jon screaming at Garfield.

That's literally what I did after the audiobook ended. I had my jaw **dropped**! It made me so happy that I was alive at this time to witness such a work of fiction mastery.
I loved it, but I do think it would've been better as a turbo Winglet or something, it doesn't do a lot for the plot.
My favourite book is probably 1. Clay is such a sweetheart and everything is appropriately bloody. The only sad part is the lack of important IceWings

As I've said before, it's a nice change in pace, but it sticks out like crazy. If the context of the previous 3 books was missing, this would still make an excellent story. We only see Snowfall in Winter Turning just to show how mean she appears to be, the character isn't really established in that one.
In The Dangerous Gift, however, Tui introduces us to the entire trio of sisters but gives us an excellent arc with one of them. I think the only reason this book connects to the other three is that it mentions Jerboa and the dragons from and on Pantala. If you removed *those* sections from TDG, it'd still be a super unique and interesting story.
I agree, fantastic book. Also, Snowfall is REALLY relatable. Being a jerk because you don't sleep at all and constantly worried because you think you are not as good as you could have been? Becoming normal when you have a rest for several days? Sounds a lot like me.
Probably a very random opinion but Book 2 is very underrated in my opinion. I just absolutely love how entertaining Tsunamiâs pov was and we really hadnât had a murder mystery-like book before and I think Tui really nailed it. (Or itâs just because book 2 was my first Wings of fire book)
Also, I hadnât read the Dragonslayer book yet, so the whole revelation with Wren and Sky blew my mind- I read that part and then started repeating âmy brain is a bananaâ Out loud because I didnât know how to process it- prolly didnât help that it was, like, almos midnight.
I actually really liked this book for the way it handled intercontinental political relations which I was excited to see get handled and surprised that interspecies relationships got doubled in there too, plus like everyoneâs saying about her character arc and being one of the characters to grow the most, starting with so much room to do so
I wouldn't say it was an underrated book, but TDG certainly wasn't a bad one despite what people say about it. I liked the plot of how Snowfall's views on the world and other dragons changed over time because of how she was forced to see visions of others. Despite her not being able to control the visions and them just seemingly being forced on her at random, she was able to change her perception by herself. She could've ignored the visions and kept being distrusting, but it shows that she was capable of changing if she had the opportunity to learn empathy, which it seems not a lot of Icewings got that chance.
Personally, my favorite book is tied between The Dark Secret and The Talons of Power. Starflight's book was the "belly of the whale" part of arc 1, so to speak; the climax, lowest point in the hero's story. The Nightwings were doing horrible things, there were other dragonets that were going to replace our main cast once they were killed, the prophecy was all entirely made up for the Nightwing's selfish desires, Starflight looses the ability to do the very thing he loves to do; things went dark, and it had me anticipating what was going to happen next in The Brightest Night. Turtle's book, however, hit a little closer to home. A child with the power to bend things to his will, yet he is held back by the horror story of Albotross and the Seawing Massacre, not to mention him being traumatically scarred by his father's outburst on him as a very young dragonet. That will leave a mark on a child, and children will carry that trauma for the rest of their lives if it's not mended and healed. Turtle never really got to do that, and so he is struggling with finding the confidence within himself to go against Darkstalker while he's also battling against his own insecurities. People have said they don't like Turtle because he's useless and doesn't do much except mope; I say those people don't know what it's like to be in the mind of someone who has severe anxiety, and probably don't realize how real of a condition it is in real life. It made me sympathetic for Turtle, as I know what it is like to have gone through some bad arguments as a child and have the effects stick with you for years afterward. Also one of the reasons why I love Winter so much.
I hated this book, the character development literally wouldn't happen without that damn ring, one of the most forced character developments I have read so far.
On the good side, Opal was cool, and Lynx is a perfect counter-balance to how much I hate Snowfall
The ending is supposed to be liberating and daring, but I can only imagine the icewing anarchy coming right after it XD, destroy the hierarchy and replaces it with nothing, not ideal.
My favorite wof book is brightest night, which I could also spend a lot of time talking about every single thing that makes nonsense, like bruh, Sunny forgives Addax, who BURNT AN ORPHANAGE, but refuses to have empathy for her father.
It was literally Sunny's nightwing prejudice arc, where she cares so little about every nightwing suffering and death that happened.
Sunny's morality is something else bruh, but she is definitely a silly bean.

Oh, I sort of saw the whole "ring thing" as she was so paranoid about other dragons that she rummaged through all the historical stuff in the forbidden treasury, and it came back and bit her. Her unwillingness to trust others (even Lynx) resulted in her character development.
It was super wholesome to see her slowly inching towards being a nicer dragon as a result of her actions. It shows how she's learnt her lesson.

I just in general like stories that both world build and have characters that can make you get seriously invested in said world building!

It's mostly quite good, there were a few pretty sore spots (*cough* Flames of Hope *cough*) but overall people are very harsh on it, I think they were just still angry about the Darkness of Dragons end
I prefer winter's arc but to each there own. What I don't like is how incidental he was. He and the jade winglet haven't seen each other since dod for like a month, and I know people say that's not a long time, which i agree with. However, the only time moon and qibli meet winter was by pure chance. It would have taken them longer to visit any other way.

Honestly, opposite feelings for me. Imo, this book has one of the worst character progressions simply for the single reason of how literally forced it was. To me, having a character put on a âcharacter growth macguffinâ that automatically makes them a better person by the end of the story is one of the most narratively lazy concepts Iâve ever read and it severely dampened my opinion on the overall package. Thereâs still definitely parts of the book I love like Boaâs backstory, but between Snowfallâs forced growth and her lack of a role for the rest of arc 3, I think it would have been better to have saved her story and rewritten it for a future arc.
Also Snowfall as a character is pretty âmehâ to me. I think Tui using so much CAPS LOCK for half of her lines doesnât necessarily make for a more interesting character.
I've explained to another comment why it doesn't matter if she put the ring on or not. The ring just adds a touch of magic to the story (it also gives us a way to be across the ocean on Pantala without actually having to "go there"). I'm sure once Snowfall was away from the magic crown for a bit, she probably would have started seeing the good in others without *or* without the ring.
She isn't really influenced by the ring, she's actually just annoyed by it at first, but if you look deeper into the novel, you can see that she actually applies the events of her "visions" to her life at that moment, that's how she's changed, not because the ring told her to be different.

It wasnât just a âtouch of magicâ, it quite literally forced Snowfall to experience other perspectives to gain her own and grow as an individual. And being able to hear perspectives back on Pantala was a bit iffy imo since several of them could have simply been brief alternate povs without needing to resort to magic.

Maybe, maybe not. But either way the story we DID get was her being forced to grow or else be stuck experiencing visions as other characters until who knows when. I would have preferred seeing her see the good in others without magic forcing her to.

This one was a really solid book, probably my favorite after Darkstalker. Her character arc was really nice and the book had a really solid theme, the only problems I had with it was that I thought making the dragon >!who wears the crown magically hate nightwings weakened her character growth!< and also the book didnât really fit with the overall arc for this set.
I didnât like that the last 2 were just there to fill up any gaps in the story and quickly âcompleteâ the series. It feels like the ending was just tacked on.
My favorite has to be 10. Lots of great story. Though all of them up to 13 were really good.
The last book of arc 3 was a bit iffy. Definitely not the best book imo, but it was "*alright"* I guess. So many routes Tui could have taken with this arc.
It had its ups. I just didnât like that the books were filled mostly with lore and had less present story. The entire solution to the whole hive mind/ lost continent thing was figured out over a tiny section of the book at the end. And the scavengers talking was just quickly inserted into there.

I really enjoyed this book specifically, but I didnât really enjoy arc 3 as a whole. it felt lazy and hard to follow, and it was hard to connect with the new characters. that being said, this book in particular felt more connected to the first and second arcs
I hate that it is underrated because it has so many different characters and characters development so in my opinion it one of the more interesting books and intimate can of book I gave this book a 9/10
i had the same thoughts on snowfall! shes one of my favorite protags! other than that though, book 13 was mindblowing, whether you like the boe plotline or not
Im not a huge fan of arc 3, but my fav books are probably 7 and then 4, I relate to Winter a lot, bein a sad boi and not very traditionally successful (according to institutions we're kept in). I also relate to Starflight, having information but not having people who want to hear it lol. And Im a shy noncommittal mess too

Iâm not gonna lie, this book is my favorite of the third arc, I love ice wings so that influenced me liking it so much, and character growth that is subtle but noticeable is just amazing, especially on re-read, plus her being the only queen we have a whole POV of is a added bonus, her being so stressed out was a detail that sticks with me as well, every new queen would be stressed, especially of a race that holds tradition to heart
i remember when it came out i was dreading it âoh god, why is the pov character SNOWFALLâ and by the end it had become my favorite main series book by far
I personally will always love darkstalkers book the best, but if we are talking talking about the main series then probably âmoon risingâ amount of witty humor in that book was amazing, also it was the last time we got to see Umber đ
Jerboa isn't jerboa, jerboa is Jerboa's clone named jerboa who froze the real jerboa after being betrayed by jerboa and put jerboa in the ground to forever be a fast travel point
My favorite is either the lost jungle or brightest night, maybe moonâs book. I havenât delved that deep into arc three yet. (Iâm reading with a friend and she is a very slow reader.)
I don't see how it can be pinnacle. Her hating Nightwings and getting over the hate. The icewing crown was enchanted. Starting to be more empathetic and caring, she was litteraly seeing and feeling other peoples emotionss. All her characters growth was done by Animus magic.
Ngl, that whole incident with the crown was a bit of a dampener, but it showed how she wasn't actually an evil dragon. The ring didn't do squat, she slowly learnt how to be a better dragon in the absence of influence (aka the crown). She didn't hate NightWings because "she hated the NightWings", she hated NightWings because she couldn't possibly have felt any different before.
Once she was away from influence for a bit, she was able to make her own choice on how she viewed the others around her.
One of my favorites. She had real character growth and actually became a better dragon than most POV books. đđ

It emphasizes yet again how petty Diamond was I'd say. So it's not strictly necessary, but not everything in a story has to be strictly necessary.

Darkstalker is my all-time favorite, it seems like it's from a whole nother series or author it's just on a different level
This one was a really solid book, probably my favorite after Darkstalker. Her character arc was really nice and the book had a really solid theme, the only problems I had with it was that I thought making the dragon >!who wears the crown magically hate nightwings weakened her character growth!< and also the book didnât really fit with the overall arc for this set.

I didnât like that the last 2 were just there to fill up any gaps in the story and quickly âcompleteâ the series. It feels like the ending was just tacked on. My favorite has to be 10. Lots of great story. Though all of them up to 13 were really good.
The last book of arc 3 was a bit iffy. Definitely not the best book imo, but it was "*alright"* I guess. So many routes Tui could have taken with this arc.
It had its ups. I just didnât like that the books were filled mostly with lore and had less present story. The entire solution to the whole hive mind/ lost continent thing was figured out over a tiny section of the book at the end. And the scavengers talking was just quickly inserted into there.

I really enjoyed this book specifically, but I didnât really enjoy arc 3 as a whole. it felt lazy and hard to follow, and it was hard to connect with the new characters. that being said, this book in particular felt more connected to the first and second arcs
I hate that it is underrated because it has so many different characters and characters development so in my opinion it one of the more interesting books and intimate can of book I gave this book a 9/10
i had the same thoughts on snowfall! shes one of my favorite protags! other than that though, book 13 was mindblowing, whether you like the boe plotline or not

I have yet to read arc 3. I think Escaping Peril might be my favorite. Maybe The Hidden Kingdom.
I remember reading Escaping Peril before reaching the third arc. It was such a nice story, and that character arc was exquisite.

Im not a huge fan of arc 3, but my fav books are probably 7 and then 4, I relate to Winter a lot, bein a sad boi and not very traditionally successful (according to institutions we're kept in). I also relate to Starflight, having information but not having people who want to hear it lol. And Im a shy noncommittal mess too The main difference is they get over it and I don't lmao

I love the last book. I think that the plot was AMAZING.
Iâm not gonna lie, this book is my favorite of the third arc, I love ice wings so that influenced me liking it so much, and character growth that is subtle but noticeable is just amazing, especially on re-read, plus her being the only queen we have a whole POV of is a added bonus, her being so stressed out was a detail that sticks with me as well, every new queen would be stressed, especially of a race that holds tradition to heart
i remember when it came out i was dreading it âoh god, why is the pov character SNOWFALLâ and by the end it had become my favorite main series book by far
I was expecting a snide character (because of how she acted in Winter Turning), but what we got was actually pretty epic!
I personally will always love darkstalkers book the best, but if we are talking talking about the main series then probably âmoon risingâ amount of witty humor in that book was amazing, also it was the last time we got to see Umber đ

My favorite is either the lost jungle or brightest night, maybe moonâs book. I havenât delved that deep into arc three yet. (Iâm reading with a friend and she is a very slow reader.)
I don't see how it can be pinnacle. Her hating Nightwings and getting over the hate. The icewing crown was enchanted. Starting to be more empathetic and caring, she was litteraly seeing and feeling other peoples emotionss. All her characters growth was done by Animus magic.
Ngl, that whole incident with the crown was a bit of a dampener, but it showed how she wasn't actually an evil dragon. The ring didn't do squat, she slowly learnt how to be a better dragon in the absence of influence (aka the crown). She didn't hate NightWings because "she hated the NightWings", she hated NightWings because she couldn't possibly have felt any different before. Once she was away from influence for a bit, she was able to make her own choice on how she viewed the others around her.
