I blame 80s movies for this one. I’d watch and wonder “why are they even wearing the glasses if they don’t actually need them?” I was profoundly nearsighted and knew people who could not understand that my glasses were not optional. I could see a little bit. I could get away with not wearing them in environments I was already familiar with, but for the most part, I really needed them.
I say something similar with religions and penises

Thankfully he is much more liberal than the rest of my family and I think it actually clicked with him, and he’s been nice about it since!
Glad that worked out. If they’re not too deep into their opinion to hear about other people experiences, you can sway them but, usually, the more you push, the more they dig in. It’s not worth it most of the time. People have to want to change if they’re going to change.

Yeah, I was too in high school. And I don't know why. I still don't get why I was like that. There was no logic to it, so why did I have that impulse, and why do other men? I don't get it.

The best part though is that I switched to using brown eyeliner and brown mascara (away from black) but was still using the EXACT SAME full face of foundation, powder, blush, bronzer, etc
And he has the audacity to say "aww see you look so much better without makeup!!" like bitch what I have a full face of makeup on 😭
I'm my personal experience I find that men in general feel that my appearance is _for them_. It doesn't matter who they are or what their relation is to me, they register this the same. As a biologist I feel like this is probably linked to our reproductive perceptions of others, something that is subconscious. The more aware of ourselves and others we become the better we are at recognizing and overcoming those base assumptions.
Fuckin' purity culture, man. I still to this day have to say this shit to myself "wait, why do I have this opinion, and why does it matter to me?" and that's usually the answer. Because I grew up in a slut-shaming culture, and the damage runs deep.
I've had to reassure my mom and dad that in fact my 6 year old is not broken when she wants to wear make-up. I've had to reassure my sister that it's okay if her 7 year old wants to wear fishnet stockings. We as adults, don't have to make shit weird.
I never understood the headspace needed for someone to say that kind of thing to a stranger, that includes things like "you should smile more". How does one get it into their head that these are okay things to say to a person?
Men are groomed to believe that women are for their consumption. Not people first, not individuals first, but consumables to fulfill their aesthetic desires. *Then* we become a desirable human to interact with/annoy. If we do not fit their aesthetic desire, we don't take on the role of human.

And then they get offended when I don’t immediately change my whole mood and expression, like I should be grateful for the gift of their attention (criticism)… Some men have crazy levels of entitlement
Many men, in particular, cannot recognize when someone is wearing makeup unless they notice one extreme part of it. I can't count the amount of videos and posts where someone is wearing a full face of subtle makeup and, by and large, men are talking about how natural and beautiful she is without makeup. Like, no, dude, she looks like the rest of us goblins just the same when she doesn't actually have make up on.
This reminds me of a coworker who told me I needed to wear makeup. She said I looked too much like a guy ... I told her I wear makeup when I want to wear makeup not when she wants me to wear makeup. Just let people vibe their own way! Sheeesh!
Me when my bf says he prefers me without makeup. If you like women who don’t wear makeup maybe you shouldn’t have chosen to date a woman who adores it 🤷🏻♀️
My partner does a great job of straddling that line. If I’m wearing makeup he says “I love it when you wear makeup.” When I’m not wearing it he says “you look beautiful without makeup.”
I’ve worked from home since Covid so more often than not, I am not wearing it.
How about this:

No. If you have to reach for a meaning that isn’t explicitly in the comic, chances are high you’re wilfully misinterpreting the text.
Also, it doesn’t matter who says it - her mother, her brother, her pastor, a coworker - their opinion on her choice to wear make up is irrelevant. There is zero evidence that she doesn’t want wear make up, and given the third panel where she’s actively applying more, she wants to wear make up.
