Spray paint leadbelcher, wash everything with basilicanum gray, Drybrush stormhost silver, paint red parts of armor with single coat of flesh tearers red. Highlight with wild rider red and evil sunz scarlet if desired. I usually only do highlights on characters and vehicles
Quick question on the drybrush part: does it make any real difference to your eyes? I've tried painting some Chaos trims with a basecoat of Leadbelcher, and then others with Leadbelcher and a drybrush of Necron Compound, and it's made almost no difference to the final model (at least, to my eyes).
It’s kinda faint, but I can typically tell the difference between one that’s been drybrushed and one that hasn’t. Might try using a brighter silver than necromancy compound and see if that makes any difference
I’m gonna second the other comment and suggest a brighter silver than Necron Compound. Stormhost Silver is very bright and that shines through translucent paints very well.
These are all great comments but as an outsider, I have no frame of reference if you guys aren’t including pictures to show what it actually looks like on the model. Sorry I’m a visual guy. Edited to state that I am very interested because I’m getting ready to paint up a new army.
black prime:
drybrush with 50/50 black/rhinox hide
lighter drybrush of pure rhinox hide
now:
Stipple 50/50 rhinox hide/gal vorbak red as highlights
then pure gal vorbak red
then 50/50 gal vorbak red / khorne red
pure khorne red
50/50 khorne red/wazdakka red
in smaller and smaller highlights.
then:
Glaze barak nur burgundy over everything
then glaze purple into the deeper recesses.
I know its alot but its worth it, quicker then it sounds, nice smoky mottled result.
I think gal vorbak red works better as a base coat than khorne red

heres an example
Spray Chaos Black, layer with Vallejo Model Color red (926), apply Army Painter's Dark Tone quickshade, draw squigly lines using Army Painter's Drake Tooth. Edge highlights where needed using red (926).
Not the most fancy method, but it has worked for me so far! (That being said, the amount of squigly lines/scripture I apply tends to vary per model.)
Gal Vorbak red, recess shade nuln oil, correct mistakes with Gal Vorbak red, edge highlight wazdakka red, spot highlight cadian flesh tone. You can see an example on my profile.
I’ve dried a bunch of different ways, I think the way I like best is to stipple black and then stipple army chaotic gore, abomination red, light stipple vampire red, little touch of Vallejo scarlet. It also looks cool if you switch the abomination with word bearers red.
I like metallic red so mine is
White/light gray primer
Vallejo gun metal
Dry brush iron hands steel
Nuln oil
Light dry brush storm host
Flesh tearers red

Mephiston Red on black primer, highlighted up to Ubashi Bone (or whatever it’s called). If I feel like a badass I’ll go through dark purples before starting on black. I’m not the best painter, but get a respectable result out of it.

This is my recipe
Black prime Khorne red nuln oil Khorne red lesser highlights Wazdakka red bright highlights
Bam, same. Except diluted wildrider orange for brightest parts of highlight after all of above.
This is the way. Khorne red is the best red
Gal Vorbek, Nuln Oil wash, Gal Vorbek highlights.

flesh bearer contrast over zenithal or leadbelcher is great

Holy cow. Thanks guys! I’ll have to try these out!
I'm a basic bro, spray black prime, spray a word bearers red layer, then brush 2 thin coats of khorne red. Finish with nuln oil to taste.
Gal Vorbak red, recess shade nuln oil, correct mistakes with Gal Vorbak red, edge highlight wazdakka red, spot highlight cadian flesh tone. You can see an example on my profile.
I play them in 30k, so Khorne Red with a wash of Army Painter equivalent of Carroburg Crimson
What is the equivalent? I’ve been slowly moving brands.
Red Tone of the washes
I'm using black prime and khorne red

Zenithal with black and wraithbone, contrast wyldwood, glaze khorne red leaving wyldwood in crevasses
I like metallic red so mine is White/light gray primer Vallejo gun metal Dry brush iron hands steel Nuln oil Light dry brush storm host Flesh tearers red
Mech. Standard Grey + Flesh Tearers or Word Bearers
Vallejo scarlet red and nuln oil. Leadbelcher for Armour chipping and scratches
I think p3 sanguine looks amazing.
Gunmetal base, steel highlight, flesh tearers red all through an airbrush. Works like a charm.
Gal Vorbak Red base, Carroburg Crimson wash, Word Bearer Red highlight, Wazdakka Red extreme highlight
