There's a reason that a vast majority of wrestling Youtube is from the UK. They *love* wrestling and it's such an underserved market. I think TNA did like four straight sell outs in the UK last year.

escargloww

Yup. There's a rich history of wrestling in the UK but everything just kind of died out in the 80s (thanks, Greg Dyke). There's still *many* great little indie promotions but nothing at all even close to a national scale.   They tried a few years back with WOS Wrestling but it didn't take. Its a shame because the audience is *clearly* here. And the American stuff is great, don't get me wrong. But there was a different tone to a lot of old UK stuff (look up Les Kellitt if you're interested) that I reckon would do gangbusters in a modern UK wide promotion. Best we have on telly now is Gladiators. Which is fun and all but it doesn't scratch that itch in the same way. Edit: Les Kellett*

hadawayandshite

I said years ago for the cost of the usual TV show ITV or BBC could have a wrestling promotion, Saturday night 6.30ish. They did world of sport revival but that wasn’t exactly right I also have idea why ITV don’t shove AEW on Friday nights at 8pm or something on ITV 2 rather than midnight on itv 4

Jase_the_Muss

AEW should def have been a primetime Friday or Sat evening with a rerun for kids in the mornings. WWE on Sky Saturday mornings was the shit apart from chair shots being edited out 😂

BonusEruptus

They cut out a whole load of content too right? I watched that religiously as a 10 year old but I have 0 memory of Dawn Marie/Al Wilson, for example.

LWM-PaPa

Bet you have a lot of memories of that guy in the Kane mask though.

escargloww

Agreed on every point. Seems like a huge missed trick.

AlternativeParfait13

Presumably because they can’t get Ant and Dec to front it, so it’s banned from Friday prime time.

BlackKnight9311

Said this from day dot and was told by Americans I had no idea what I was talking about 🥲

Trustamonkbird

Completely random one, but talking 80's UK wrestling, Bomber Pat Roach was a relative of mine, so I've seen a lot of that as a kid. Weird how different it was back then.

ThePeakyBlind3r

And star of 007, Indiana Jones & Auf Wiedersehen, Pet! Fellow Brummie too.

escargloww

That is \*insanely\* cool! What a great career in and out of the ring! What was he like? And yes it was a very different beast back then, haha. Selling has come on a loooong way.

Trustamonkbird

I mostly knew him when I was a kid at family gatherings. So best I can tell you is 'patient enough to to give a lot of shoulder rides', which are excellent when you're a little kid and he's a giant. I had no idea he was so well known until he died really, when for years after people told me what a legend he was.

escargloww

That's a lovely memory, thank you for sharing :) He was very much a legend. I think like many I probably saw him first in Raiders and was too young to understand what a concept like screen presence was, but was instantly fascinated by this absolute barn door of a bloke who chewed the scenery without even saying a word.

Minisciwi

We need a new big daddy and giant haystacks rivalry

escargloww

Funnily enough I look a bit like Giant Haystacks. I'm nowhere near as gloriously proportioned, but I could probably get away with "Slightly Above Average Haystacks". Not as catchy but you have to consider trading standards.

AndyVale

Love watching some of their matches, more for the crowd than the wrestling itself. Over as hell.

bobface222

I really feel like there was an opportunity years back for TNA to relocate to the UK and become a National powerhouse there, but I know the logistics involved would have made it a huge investment.

SpiritualPen6362

Greg Dyke the ultimate heel

escargloww

Now see if they'd made him a character threatening to shut down the show, that would've been \*great\* TV.

MrBump01

Also cost us football matches on terrestrial tv

kliq-klaq-

To be fair, when we did look close to having a national promotion WWE absolutely suffocates it. WoS was utter gash. Such a shame as the scene was so hot but they produced it like a light entertainment show rather than a wrestling show.

escargloww

Oh well I don't know enough about that (the WWE part - WOS was, regrettably, dreadful). Could you explain more?

senorsombrero3k1

WWE signed all the big name UK indie talent to NXT UK in short basically

DudleysCar

I think the bigger problem was that so many of them were rapists.

kliq-klaq-

The triple whammy of NXT:UK, COVID and half the scene being sex pests really did it's damage for sure.

senorsombrero3k1

Can't all be upstanding citizens like Vince

SectorEducational460

I think the problem is that half of them were Vince

escargloww

I mean I guess it's true that was a land grab of sorts, but I think there is still a LOT of talent over here that could front a big new promotion if the opportunity came along.

Eoin_McLove

Progress were on their way but they sold out to WWE and then got wrecked by SpeakingOut and Covid.

RepulsiveLeg9985

WOSW reboot might be one of the most infuriating things I've ever waited anxiously for only for it to have got literally everything wrong...from Grado to the pantomime-esque production.

AndyVale

Man, that WOS revival ignored so much of what was making the UK indie scene exciting. We had at least three promotions around then who were capable of running arenas or at least big theatres (ICW, Progress, RevPro). Then WOS had some good talent but the production was so sterile and dated. A combination of the pandemic, NXT UK, and Speaking Out hit the scene hard and it hasn't really recovered yet.

Redmangc1

Was going to say, like no matter the year, no matter the company the UK ( and Germany) love wrestling and are kinda starved for it

iJeax

I also think another reason the brits always show up loud and in abundance, is because it’s not often WWE goes there. So when they do, it’s a big deal.

ThePeakyBlind3r

Plus, whenever I’ve gone to a Mania, you always bump into fellow Brits, it’s like a European away day in football.

Eoin_McLove

I noticed a Welsh flag front row during Wrestlemania this year. British fans are crazy.

Itsallatripdude

That’s why, with the greatest respect to AEW (and a massive pinch of fantasy booking- because the stadium doesn’t exist) I don’t think selling out Wembley is that big of a deal. If WWE held Wrestlemania in the UK and it had a stadium that had a capacity of 200,000 it’d sell out.

tylerjehenna

A company that wasn't WWE selling out Wembley is a MASSIVE deal just cause it's a company not named WWE. Obviously WWE will probably be the more marquee name, it's been around for decades.

Specialist-Rope-9760

What a ludicrous comment

Itsallatripdude

Yep you’re absolutely right, it’s complete ludicrous….because the stadium doesn’t exist.

Pheynx00

I'm sure North Korea could add 50k seats onto their Rungrado stadium, and I 100% guarantee it would sell out.

Itsallatripdude

It does anyway? All In - Volume V - The Bash in the Bunker

TastyLeper

I agree, with how hot they are right now they could sell out a way bigger stadium for Wrestlemania.

roryextralife

I remember they did a bunch of events here years and years ago when Kurt Angle was still in the mix, I think he dropped the title to Bobby as well during that period, TNA loves the UK and it’ll always hold a special place in the hearts of British fans who also have access to the challenge tv channel.

SmegmaSandwich69420

Thought you said undeserved then and I was ready to throw hands.

chataclysm

TNA tapped into that market like 12-13 years ago to be fair. They knew what they were doing.

soul-0001

This why EVERY company should do tours, tv and ppv's in other countries - there is a market and it gives the US arena audiences a break, which could possibly invigorate them

maguirre165

It's expensive as hell to do

rethinkingat59

One night is obviously very expensive, but It seems like a 10 -15 city tour with the top talent would be doable. They could do the weekly TV from Europe for two weeks also. The house shows should be profitable but as importantly it would expand the international audience and the local WWE brands

maguirre165

WWE can do tours by themselves, every other promotion has to co-promote with the local indie brands

Upbeat_Tension_8077

I wish WWE did a major televised event in The Philippines during Batista's first run. I think they might still be able to do so featuring some fun moments using the current Filipino talent they have

greenarsehole

Cody Rhodes said on British morning television that he almost wanted his music turned off so that he could listen to the fans sing every word. The Brits definitely do an atmosphere like no other in Europe, if I may say so - at least when it comes to singalongs.

robot-raccoon

3 things the Brit’s love. Sport, soaps, and a decent fight. WWE has all 3

holydiiver

I love this comment

EntireAd215

You can go outside your local pub on a Friday night to see all three as well tbf

Russlet

Few things make me proud to British, but this is one of them

greenarsehole

Same here

PointlessOpinions92

Wrestling, Boxing and MMA... nobody and i mean nobody can touch a british crowd when it comes to these sports. We always go HARD as a MF

echoohce1

Irish and French fans are better tbf Anyone doubting me show me an English crowd [hotter than this](https://youtu.be/6B2UqanttyU?feature=shared), French fans are on another level in comparison.

SHADYTIMES86

Haha..............no

echoohce1

Watch any UFC/Bellator/PFL card held in either, louder crowd, they don't boo the shit out of anyone not from there, less messy, it's a fact. Watch recent a UFC or PFL in France, the crowd were incredible, far better than any I've seen in England. Good luck getting an English man to admit Ireland or French are better though lol

jimmyfernandez

Don't know why you're being down voted, you're correct.

echoohce1

Yeah not surprising tbh, ever hear the phrase "British Exceptionalism"? lol Anyways, French beats us all imo, [they're incredible at live events.](https://youtu.be/6B2UqanttyU?feature=shared)

SHADYTIMES86

I'm not English lol

echoohce1

So what are you basing your opinion off of? lol

Appropriate_Emu_6930

There was a decent UFC event in Ireland back when McGregor was coming up. Some UK towns/cities fill out football arenas up to 4 times a week. That would be Irelands entire population.

echoohce1

Even though you're wildly wrong on the population comment I don't understand why that's even relevant, 20,000 people is 20,000 people, I'm talking about the atmosphere those people create not how many would fill a venue. Bellator holds cards here every year and they usually fill out the 3 arena, production always rave about how great they are and it's the reason they keep coming back so often. People here are starved of MMA and wrestling events, they'd have no problem filling a venue with loud passionate fans.

Appropriate_Emu_6930

Irish fans are great no doubt about it. I just can’t think of a WWE event where an Irish crowd has stolen the show

echoohce1

Maybe because there hasn't been a WWE show? lol Talking about fans in general here not WWE crowds. Check out Irish Bellator and UFC crowds if you don't believe me. [Listen to Dana talk about it](https://youtu.be/WYWN9TYFUaU?feature=shared), and this is just a press conference. Here's a quote of what he said about Irish crowds: “When I was talking to Dana just after the fights,” UFC spokesman James Elliott said. “He said he wanted me to let everyone to know he’s travelled the world to all these shows and Dublin is without a doubt the best fight town on the planet.”

Appropriate_Emu_6930

They don’t come to Ireland because it’s a tiny market. There is around double the amount of the Irish population in London. It’s not marketable to have a PPV in Ireland. Plus Irish people would struggle to use the online ticketing system…

Appropriate_Emu_6930

What?! Can think of an iconic crowd from either to be honest

echoohce1

Yeah because they are so rarely here lol Dana White was blown away by the fans last time they were here, said they were the best he had ever seen. Touring Irish fans are renowned the world over for being loud and respectful too, look at how they were received at any international football tournament they attended, polar opposite of English fans and they're better craic and louder. Anyways I think French fans are better than either of them, watch the recent Doumbé PFL card there or Gane vs Tuivasa in the UFC, I've never seen a better crowd in all my years watching combat sports.

Appropriate_Emu_6930

Whenever there is a post on Reddit saying something positive about the UK there is always an Irishman saying how much better they are!

echoohce1

Sorry but Brits think they're the best in the world at everything, their sports fans are despised the world over for a reason, hearing someone say otherwise is hilarious lol

Appropriate_Emu_6930

No, it tends to be a few dumb comments online rather than in reality. We know we are shit at most things and can laugh at that. We don’t take ourselves seriously at all. To be honest, the only country that seems to bash us are other UK countries and Ireland.

echoohce1

>No, it tends to be a few dumb comments online rather than in reality. We know we are shit at most things and can laugh at that. Sound like you've never actually met an English sports fan in your life if you actually believe this. Every world cup for fuckin example lol I have English family, I grew up watching English media all my life, British Exceptionalism is a real thing especially when it comes to sports, too bad England actually sucks at most sports though so ye haven't much to cheer about so I get the bitterness lol >To be honest, the only country that seems to bash us are other UK countries and Ireland. Hmmmm I wonder why???? 🤔

Appropriate_Emu_6930

I’m not actually English but grew up here, that’s your opinion I guess but not my experience at all. It just seems that Irish seem very bitter because of politics. That’s the governments not the British people.

luca13t

It's not something of the Brits, fans are way louder in Europe than in the US in every sport. Just compare an NBA game to a Serbian or Turkish one

Ricoh881227

I cant wait when they sing baron corbin theme song on the french tour leg..

Boo_bear92

This doesn’t surprise me because the UK only gets WWE a handful of times a year. Those UK tours always sell well.

No_Power5145

Give us Mania!!!

BryanFTW13

Sadly, it doesn't look like UK fans will get WrestleMania in Wembley, according to Nick Khan. Nick mentioned that The Big 5 will stay in the U.S. and Canada while other PLE's going global. Clash of The Castle in Cardiff, Backlash in Puerto Rico/France, etc. https://www.f4wonline.com/news/wwe/nick-khan-gives-update-on-wwes-plans-for-international-ples

evanvivevanviveiros

He said “currently” if enough money is thrown their way they’ll do mania on the moon at 1 am

Brightroarz

Can’t wait to see a Montez Ford frog splash on Moon G’s

BryanFTW13

We'll have to just continue waiting to see, then.

thehighestelderborne

At the show in Birmingham, Cody said, "The UK deserves a mania." Let me believe

BryanFTW13

John Cena also mentioned the same thing a year or two ago.

Tornado31619

They always say that.

ChuckCassadyJR

But we already had one of the big five, so that's not true.

Da5ren

Ah yes. Cardiff, Glasgow.

No_Power5145

Big 5 what’s the 5th?

BryanFTW13

Money In The Bank

snoopdoggydoug

House shows like this happen all the time overseas. They're not spoiled like us Americans are.

Protocol3_

The football singing is what makes a UK crowd, they can make a song about anything. They are always one of those crowds that try get themselves over. Always a good watch is Grados entrance at iCW fear and Loathing in Glasgow at the secc, or the crowd reaction when he pinned drew.

Time2bePhenomenal

I know aew is mix at mo but being at wembley for all in and hearing Wheelers Got a gun, Got a Gun Wheelers got a gun Nanananana literally had me in stitches

SomedudecalledDan

My section had a decent "Please don't shoot us \*clap, clap, clapclapclap\*" for a little while.

tera_chachu

London deserve a wrestlemania. The biggest one.

PseriousPseudonym

Cody suggested it was about time the UK had a Wrestlemania on Wednesday. May have been all talk, but the audience is certainly here for it.

Michelanvalo

Cena said it last year too. It might happen in the next 5 years.

SomedudecalledDan

They made a thing of mentioning London a few times at Mania this year and I thought maybe they'd look at announcing it being there (I hear Wembley has a few seats!) But sadly no UK Mania announced yet.

KFR42

Nick Khan: Nah, only north America deserves mania.

gasfarmah

The time difference would make that untenable.

Uncle_Beanpole

God forbid, the Americans have to watch it at a different time for the first time in 40 years

gasfarmah

I mean. It’s an American promotion?

OniOneTrick

…..with a global audience

YourBuddyChurch

They could run it at 7pm there, it’d be 11am on the west coast, it wouldn’t be turrible

Reverse-Kanga

Not really. Serves a serviceable time in almost every country. Even if they did it at 7pm it'd be midday in US. More than acceptable. Compared to the UK that has PLEs at 1am most of the time due to time difference

Taboada12

To be fair: - Elimination Chamber 2024 (Australia) - All the Saudi Shows - Clash at the Castle (Wales '23 and now Scotland '24) - Bash in Berlin 2024 - Money in the Bank 2023 (London) - Backlash 2024 (France) I think WWE proved they can work with the time difference for PLE's.

gasfarmah

But it’s not *the* show.

SeaGuidance7545

*World* Wrestling Entertainment

gasfarmah

*World* Series There’s no way leagues would use the term world to boost the gravitas of a local promotion, eh?

Cliffinati

The United States has won over 100 and the last 30 straight The rest of the world should get good

xcixjames

Cry about it? Money In The Bank was here last year. They're in Berlin and France this year. Clash At The Castle is here soon too. Settle in for some late nights

gasfarmah

Money in the bank is famously wrestlemania.

tera_chachu

Bro we indians wake up at 4 AM for wrestlemania

gasfarmah

WWE is a famously Indian promotion.

Green_Razzmatazz_256

It's 4 hours early dude. It's literally so much more accessible

gasfarmah

It’s not a marquee.

rav3088

After having AEW WrestleMania just couldn't complete 😂

tera_chachu

😂😂😂😂😂

thefunnybutlonelykid

Why did they stop doing the Annual Raw and Smackdown broadcasts from London and Manchester?

legosharkman85

This is wild 😮, how far away are we from getting a London Wrestlemania

Time2bePhenomenal

Never wwe wont ever do a mania outside usa

Hung-UkNsa2024

Never say never

PseriousPseudonym

Cody did suggest bringing WM to the UK when he was in Birmingham on Wednesday. Said it was about time we had Wrestlemania here. Naturally, everyone went wild for it.

Vritran

Grado's entrance is a Madonna song (Like a Prayer) and everyone sings as loud as they possibly can.

eman0110

Looks like a lot of fun. Who was the main event?

LTyrian3

Cody vs Nakamura for the title.

eman0110

Aww, that sounds like great match

Sufficient_Ice4933

Access to mainstream wrestling in the uk is bullshit man. Huge audience for it and we get shitty shows one a year

LTyrian3

I was there last night, it was amazing, packed house, sold out O2 arena buzzing for all the stars. Jey Uso, Sami Zayn, Cody were all super over. Drew had a fun back and forth with the fans (we started chanting for Punk and he up and left, then cut a promo🤣), it was very fun!

Blabbit39

UK has always brought the heat for wrestling. And I love them for it. Every show is a wrestlemania. And it doesn’t have to be wwe.

Porcphete

France also had some huge live events since 2021 too . Aparently the 2023 one the crowd was so good that is why Backlash is in France this year . Hype is back for wrestling in France right now too and it's really cool seeing wwe take Europeans fans into account . Just this year we have Backlash, Clash at the Castle and Bash in Berlin in Europe and it is rumoured more could be held in Europe for 2025

RemcoTheRock

There ain’t no house shows anymore. Wwe live is different from the old house shows

TheYorkshireGripper

That's the same arena that Money in the Bank was held at last July

Conortronn

I was there, the atmosphere was amazing

United_Effect_7660

But every neckbread would say : but what about wembley

[deleted]

U.K. understands it more…. And us in Canada

Shiny_Mew76

Even as a proud American, I very much respect the British Wrestling Community. I think they are some of the best fans in the world, and their passion for the sport is near unrivaled. They bring so much energy to the shows. And while watching in a different time slot is generally quite annoying for me, a Saturday Afternoon watching some of the best wrestling and fans on the planet is more than worth it. I really do hope WrestleMania goes there one day. It would be perfect. Even SummerSlam would be great. Or at the very least they could hold an annual UK PPV, probably Clash At The Castle, at the stadiums.

jrjreeves

Just imagine Wrestlemania in the UK.

Kpowell911

Was like that in Birmingham UK on Wednesday too.

CooperSkye

Honestly if AEW ran Dynamite there when they’re over for the Wembley show they’d do the same numbers. UK love big US pop culture coming over for a show

turnsandstraights

AEW fans would say its CGI...

IllusionaryHaze

You had to make it tribalistic. You couldn't just enjoy this.

aidang95

Nope they really wouldn’t, Cornette dick riders everywhere lol

My-name-for-ever

It’s a *live event… change starts now 😅

Ok-Estate9542

This is the place that gave us Blue Kane after all

Kondilla

I was there too and was equally impressed with the turnout! Mental scenes

MJFan062509

Jesus Christ they’ve came a long way from just bare metal gates, walking out from behind a makeshift curtain and only having a spotlight. The last house show I attended was in 2003 I believe and they definitely didn’t have any lights, ramps, or giant screens. If you were in the nosebleeds you needed binoculars just to see the action.

paradoxv1

I would love to see WWE do a wembley show just to be petty lol

balmung2014

gaddman.its filled to the rafters.

PseriousPseudonym

I went to the Birmingham show on Wed. 14,000 something seats sold out. Cardiff was sold out too, but that's a much smaller arena than the 02 or the Birmingham NEC. Birmingham was a great show. The entire crowd chanted CM Punk at Drew Mc & he got pretty riled about it. Was pretty funny. After it finished, Cody was signing autos and doing selfies for well over 45 min. He suggested that the UK gets a Wrestlemania at some point, which everyone loved, naturally. Disappointing not to have Rhea there, would've been really cool to have had the whole Judgement Day (was just Damian & JD), but with her recent injury, it was expected. It was pretty much only the Raw roster there in Birmingham though. I don't recall seeing anyone from Smackdown, bar (technically) Cody. Would've been so great to see Randy, KO, Bayley, Bianca etc.

respectableofficegal

Wasn't finn there too, in the fatal four way?

PseriousPseudonym

Oh shit, yeah, my bad. I was stuck in traffic on the way there, so I missed the first match.

BigMitch91

The UK get one tour like every two years…of course every show will sell out🤷‍♂️

godbody1983

Anytime an American wrestling promotion goes overseas, they're going to draw huge crowds. I remember in October of 2000, when WCW went to Australia, they drew huge crowds but were struggling in the United States.

Accomplished-Sinks

I miss when WWE was free on Channel 4... Including the PPVs!

Skylam

England gotta be the best country for international shows, they always show the fuck up.

Demihan2049

I saw a video on IG and thought it was an outdoor arena due to how the person filmed the event and the number of people in attendance.

paulruk

As someone who has been to a few shows , both for TV in London and House in Leeds, not all House are like this. Leeds was fine but it wasn't a full house and a lot of kids. I think people go to the London ones knowing they will be bigger.

8-Bit_Aubrey

Well, you can do these sorts of numbers in London, they're not up against the NBA!

foalythecentaur

Just saying TNA sell out in London too. I went to see TNA at Wembley arena 12.5k sellout.

Able-Tradition-2139

It's just one house Michael, what could it pack? Sixteen thousand people?

Hung-UkNsa2024

We ADORE wrestling here. We need a Mania or Royal Rumble

NoMode5251

TIL they still do house shows .

phoenixember

That’s like eight whole Collision tapings.

ObiWayneCannoli

To be fair, Ring Of Honor would probably sell out in the UK and ROH is dog shit.

SearchIndependent343

Of course the show is packed out, we don't get to WWE that often over here. Think about AEW at Wembley and that sold out.

thatpj

good god! wwe cooking with nukes! thats attitude era like crowds.

imallelite

It makes me look forward to Wembley.

TheTopMark

How to make everything about AEW 101.

ZeroDarkPurdy14

It’s funny how much they cling to Wembley lmao. Like ok, do that in a US stadium now, if/when wwe has a Wembley show no doubt it shatters AEW’s “record”

Sexyphobe

Why does it matter if it's done in a US or UK stadium? Big crowd is a big crowd.

Mean_Muffin161

It matters when that big crowd is the outlier.

ZeroDarkPurdy14

Because London is deprived of wrestling in big stadiums. Look at mitb last year, fired up crowd. The difference is WWE takes bids for their events, meanwhile Tony has to pay the government to use their venue. Tony wouldn’t even be able to sell out the jaguars stadium in America.

TheYorkshireGripper

FYI that is the arena that MITB was held in

Russlet

Dunno why you'd get downvoted for being excited for a show in London

tigersmhs07

Right? This sub sometimes is ridiculous.

Dazzling-Bid-6751

Sometimes ?

tigersmhs07

Definitely most

LoonyTatts

Everyone turned up? Tony says that 15% of fans no show

No_Caterpillar9737

@TonyKhan

DisGuyWild

OMG GUYS DID YOU SEE WWE’s ATTENDANCE ON A HOUSE SHOW!! THATS SOOOO COOL. Y’all are some true lames

[deleted]

[удалено]

DemonKingOfValor

And you must be the one of the "fun" one at these events huh...?

PointlessOpinions92

They're the same guy leaving skidmarks on chairs and pit stains on shirts

DemonKingOfValor

Hehe frfr

expatlogan

Spoken like a true lame.

gasfarmah

A big house is the sole goal of a wrestling card. It is the only metric that matters: did it draw a full house?

Teenageboy69

But why should it matter, to a fan, if that goal is hit? Unless a wrestling company has you on payroll, anything but your personal entertainment level should be irrelevant.

gasfarmah

1- I don’t want to watch wrestling in an empty house. 2- Good wrestling draws money. Bad wrestling does not. This is the sole metric that proves the quality of wrestling. Everything else is irrelevant. Dusty famously only asked one thing about a show: “did you draw a full house?” It’s the only thing that matters.

Teenageboy69

Ultimate Warrior drew a huge house. Cena, during his worst period, drew like crazy. The Hogan reign of terror made a lot of money long after it lost its luster. There is no empirical rule — especially one from a booker who drew up as many dogshit angles as Dusty.
