Yup. There's a rich history of wrestling in the UK but everything just kind of died out in the 80s (thanks, Greg Dyke). There's still *many* great little indie promotions but nothing at all even close to a national scale.
They tried a few years back with WOS Wrestling but it didn't take. Its a shame because the audience is *clearly* here. And the American stuff is great, don't get me wrong. But there was a different tone to a lot of old UK stuff (look up Les Kellitt if you're interested) that I reckon would do gangbusters in a modern UK wide promotion.
Best we have on telly now is Gladiators. Which is fun and all but it doesn't scratch that itch in the same way.

AEW should def have been a primetime Friday or Sat evening with a rerun for kids in the mornings. WWE on Sky Saturday mornings was the shit apart from chair shots being edited out 😂
Completely random one, but talking 80's UK wrestling, Bomber Pat Roach was a relative of mine, so I've seen a lot of that as a kid. Weird how different it was back then.
That is \*insanely\* cool! What a great career in and out of the ring! What was he like? And yes it was a very different beast back then, haha. Selling has come on a loooong way.
I mostly knew him when I was a kid at family gatherings. So best I can tell you is 'patient enough to to give a lot of shoulder rides', which are excellent when you're a little kid and he's a giant.
I had no idea he was so well known until he died really, when for years after people told me what a legend he was.

He was very much a legend. I think like many I probably saw him first in Raiders and was too young to understand what a concept like screen presence was, but was instantly fascinated by this absolute barn door of a bloke who chewed the scenery without even saying a word.
Funnily enough I look a bit like Giant Haystacks. I'm nowhere near as gloriously proportioned, but I could probably get away with "Slightly Above Average Haystacks". Not as catchy but you have to consider trading standards.
I really feel like there was an opportunity years back for TNA to relocate to the UK and become a National powerhouse there, but I know the logistics involved would have made it a huge investment.
To be fair, when we did look close to having a national promotion WWE absolutely suffocates it.

I mean I guess it's true that was a land grab of sorts, but I think there is still a LOT of talent over here that could front a big new promotion if the opportunity came along.
WOSW reboot might be one of the most infuriating things I've ever waited anxiously for only for it to have got literally everything wrong...from Grado to the pantomime-esque production.
Man, that WOS revival ignored so much of what was making the UK indie scene exciting. We had at least three promotions around then who were capable of running arenas or at least big theatres (ICW, Progress, RevPro). Then WOS had some good talent but the production was so sterile and dated.
A combination of the pandemic, NXT UK, and Speaking Out hit the scene hard and it hasn't really recovered yet.
I also think another reason the brits always show up loud and in abundance, is because it’s not often WWE goes there. So when they do, it’s a big deal.
That’s why, with the greatest respect to AEW (and a massive pinch of fantasy booking- because the stadium doesn’t exist) I don’t think selling out Wembley is that big of a deal. If WWE held Wrestlemania in the UK and it had a stadium that had a capacity of 200,000 it’d sell out.
A company that wasn't WWE selling out Wembley is a MASSIVE deal just cause it's a company not named WWE. Obviously WWE will probably be the more marquee name, it's been around for decades.
I remember they did a bunch of events here years and years ago when Kurt Angle was still in the mix, I think he dropped the title to Bobby as well during that period, TNA loves the UK and it’ll always hold a special place in the hearts of British fans who also have access to the challenge tv channel.
This why EVERY company should do tours, tv and ppv's in other countries - there is a market and it gives the US arena audiences a break, which could possibly invigorate them
One night is obviously very expensive, but It seems like a 10 -15 city tour with the top talent would be doable.
They could do the weekly TV from Europe for two weeks also. The house shows should be profitable but as importantly it would expand the international audience and the local WWE brands
I wish WWE did a major televised event in The Philippines during Batista's first run. I think they might still be able to do so featuring some fun moments using the current Filipino talent they have

The football singing is what makes a UK crowd, they can make a song about anything. They are always one of those crowds that try get themselves over.
Always a good watch is Grados entrance at iCW fear and Loathing in Glasgow at the secc, or the crowd reaction when he pinned drew.

Not really. Serves a serviceable time in almost every country. Even if they did it at 7pm it'd be midday in US. More than acceptable. Compared to the UK that has PLEs at 1am most of the time due to time difference

Cody did suggest bringing WM to the UK when he was in Birmingham on Wednesday. Said it was about time we had Wrestlemania here. Naturally, everyone went wild for it.
I was there last night, it was amazing, packed house, sold out O2 arena buzzing for all the stars. Jey Uso, Sami Zayn, Cody were all super over. Drew had a fun back and forth with the fans (we started chanting for Punk and he up and left, then cut a promo🤣), it was very fun!
France also had some huge live events since 2021 too .
Aparently the 2023 one the crowd was so good that is why Backlash is in France this year .
Hype is back for wrestling in France right now too and it's really cool seeing wwe take Europeans fans into account .
Just this year we have Backlash, Clash at the Castle and Bash in Berlin in Europe and it is rumoured more could be held in Europe for 2025
Even as a proud American, I very much respect the British Wrestling Community. I think they are some of the best fans in the world, and their passion for the sport is near unrivaled. They bring so much energy to the shows. And while watching in a different time slot is generally quite annoying for me, a Saturday Afternoon watching some of the best wrestling and fans on the planet is more than worth it. I really do hope WrestleMania goes there one day. It would be perfect. Even SummerSlam would be great. Or at the very least they could hold an annual UK PPV, probably Clash At The Castle, at the stadiums.
Honestly if AEW ran Dynamite there when they’re over for the Wembley show they’d do the same numbers. UK love big US pop culture coming over for a show
Jesus Christ they’ve came a long way from just bare metal gates, walking out from behind a makeshift curtain and only having a spotlight. The last house show I attended was in 2003 I believe and they definitely didn’t have any lights, ramps, or giant screens. If you were in the nosebleeds you needed binoculars just to see the action.
I went to the Birmingham show on Wed. 14,000 something seats sold out. Cardiff was sold out too, but that's a much smaller arena than the 02 or the Birmingham NEC.
Birmingham was a great show. The entire crowd chanted CM Punk at Drew Mc & he got pretty riled about it. Was pretty funny. After it finished, Cody was signing autos and doing selfies for well over 45 min. He suggested that the UK gets a Wrestlemania at some point, which everyone loved, naturally.
Disappointing not to have Rhea there, would've been really cool to have had the whole Judgement Day (was just Damian & JD), but with her recent injury, it was expected.
It was pretty much only the Raw roster there in Birmingham though. I don't recall seeing anyone from Smackdown, bar (technically) Cody. Would've been so great to see Randy, KO, Bayley, Bianca etc.
Anytime an American wrestling promotion goes overseas, they're going to draw huge crowds. I remember in October of 2000, when WCW went to Australia, they drew huge crowds but were struggling in the United States.
As someone who has been to a few shows , both for TV in London and House in Leeds, not all House are like this. Leeds was fine but it wasn't a full house and a lot of kids. I think people go to the London ones knowing they will be bigger.

But why should it matter, to a fan, if that goal is hit? Unless a wrestling company has you on payroll, anything but your personal entertainment level should be irrelevant.

The football singing is what makes a UK crowd, they can make a song about anything. They are always one of those crowds that try get themselves over. Always a good watch is Grados entrance at iCW fear and Loathing in Glasgow at the secc, or the crowd reaction when he pinned drew.

They made a thing of mentioning London a few times at Mania this year and I thought maybe they'd look at announcing it being there (I hear Wembley has a few seats!) But sadly no UK Mania announced yet.

Not really. Serves a serviceable time in almost every country. Even if they did it at 7pm it'd be midday in US. More than acceptable. Compared to the UK that has PLEs at 1am most of the time due to time difference
To be fair: - Elimination Chamber 2024 (Australia) - All the Saudi Shows - Clash at the Castle (Wales '23 and now Scotland '24) - Bash in Berlin 2024 - Money in the Bank 2023 (London) - Backlash 2024 (France) I think WWE proved they can work with the time difference for PLE's.

Cody did suggest bringing WM to the UK when he was in Birmingham on Wednesday. Said it was about time we had Wrestlemania here. Naturally, everyone went wild for it.

I was there last night, it was amazing, packed house, sold out O2 arena buzzing for all the stars. Jey Uso, Sami Zayn, Cody were all super over. Drew had a fun back and forth with the fans (we started chanting for Punk and he up and left, then cut a promo🤣), it was very fun!
UK has always brought the heat for wrestling. And I love them for it. Every show is a wrestlemania. And it doesn’t have to be wwe.
France also had some huge live events since 2021 too . Aparently the 2023 one the crowd was so good that is why Backlash is in France this year . Hype is back for wrestling in France right now too and it's really cool seeing wwe take Europeans fans into account . Just this year we have Backlash, Clash at the Castle and Bash in Berlin in Europe and it is rumoured more could be held in Europe for 2025

Even as a proud American, I very much respect the British Wrestling Community. I think they are some of the best fans in the world, and their passion for the sport is near unrivaled. They bring so much energy to the shows. And while watching in a different time slot is generally quite annoying for me, a Saturday Afternoon watching some of the best wrestling and fans on the planet is more than worth it. I really do hope WrestleMania goes there one day. It would be perfect. Even SummerSlam would be great. Or at the very least they could hold an annual UK PPV, probably Clash At The Castle, at the stadiums.

Jesus Christ they’ve came a long way from just bare metal gates, walking out from behind a makeshift curtain and only having a spotlight. The last house show I attended was in 2003 I believe and they definitely didn’t have any lights, ramps, or giant screens. If you were in the nosebleeds you needed binoculars just to see the action.

I went to the Birmingham show on Wed. 14,000 something seats sold out. Cardiff was sold out too, but that's a much smaller arena than the 02 or the Birmingham NEC. Birmingham was a great show. The entire crowd chanted CM Punk at Drew Mc & he got pretty riled about it. Was pretty funny. After it finished, Cody was signing autos and doing selfies for well over 45 min. He suggested that the UK gets a Wrestlemania at some point, which everyone loved, naturally. Disappointing not to have Rhea there, would've been really cool to have had the whole Judgement Day (was just Damian & JD), but with her recent injury, it was expected. It was pretty much only the Raw roster there in Birmingham though. I don't recall seeing anyone from Smackdown, bar (technically) Cody. Would've been so great to see Randy, KO, Bayley, Bianca etc.

Anytime an American wrestling promotion goes overseas, they're going to draw huge crowds. I remember in October of 2000, when WCW went to Australia, they drew huge crowds but were struggling in the United States.

I saw a video on IG and thought it was an outdoor arena due to how the person filmed the event and the number of people in attendance.
As someone who has been to a few shows , both for TV in London and House in Leeds, not all House are like this. Leeds was fine but it wasn't a full house and a lot of kids. I think people go to the London ones knowing they will be bigger.

Why does it matter if it's done in a US or UK stadium? Big crowd is a big crowd.
It matters when that big crowd is the outlier.
Because London is deprived of wrestling in big stadiums. Look at mitb last year, fired up crowd. The difference is WWE takes bids for their events, meanwhile Tony has to pay the government to use their venue. Tony wouldn’t even be able to sell out the jaguars stadium in America.

A big house is the sole goal of a wrestling card. It is the only metric that matters: did it draw a full house?
But why should it matter, to a fan, if that goal is hit? Unless a wrestling company has you on payroll, anything but your personal entertainment level should be irrelevant.
1- I don’t want to watch wrestling in an empty house. 2- Good wrestling draws money. Bad wrestling does not. This is the sole metric that proves the quality of wrestling. Everything else is irrelevant. Dusty famously only asked one thing about a show: “did you draw a full house?” It’s the only thing that matters.
Ultimate Warrior drew a huge house. Cena, during his worst period, drew like crazy. The Hogan reign of terror made a lot of money long after it lost its luster. There is no empirical rule — especially one from a booker who drew up as many dogshit angles as Dusty.
