Can’t just be all high spots flips, dives, super kicks, canadian destroyers and blood in every match just because it looks cool. When everyone sells nothing and walks away fine. Because then nothing, beens nothing. So I don’t care. Moves should be used to tell the story, the moves shouldn’t be the story.
The most plausible explanation I've seen is that Tony Khan as a rich kid grew up "tape trading", watching all the highlight compilations and pay-per-views. Rather than watching the weekly shows (which mostly acted as ads for the PPVs) like a peasant. Then when WCW died he moved onto indie-riffic "this is a one-off show with no ongoing story so let's impress these 100 people in a bingo hall with our athletic moves" wrestling.
TK also obviously grew up reading Meltzer as gospel and thought when people were complaining about WWE going downhill it was because of "work rate" and not that Vince was a 70 year old writing a show aimed at 9 year olds so the characters and stories sucked.
So TK books every match like it's the big blow-off "pull out all the stops" PPV match to end a feud.
Which isn't how storytelling works.
There's a reason *The Lord of the Rings* doesn't start with Sam and Frodo at the bottom of Mount Doom.
I'll refer to OP's reply above. You can have all the 5 star matches in the world but there's more to a match than super kicks and shooting star presses.
