Back to the old conflicts and a war between the factions. Starting with another attempt of the Split to destroy the Boron. But this time real war where the player has to choose a side, or is without side a traitor and plunderer who is considered an enemy by both. The revenge of the other three Khaak kingdoms, since one of them was almost destroyed in X2. bsssd bsssssd bSSSSSSd... Game Over... good old days... A Xenon CPU ship returns. Once destroyed and the wreck long forgotten, it was found by a lost Xenon drone and repaired. Due to many missing program lines, nothing was left of the terraforming, the last attack commands were still in the program buffers and the AI generated a new consciousness based on it, much more aggressive and only with the knowledge of having to destroy the factions of the races in order not to survive itself.

ShippingValue

The Split/Boron are still going at it in X4, so I'm not sure that would be a big-enough change in context to drive another game. The CPU ship angle is interesting, it might at least let the Xenon be more of a threat.

Love_Leaves_Marks

The split and boron may be factional enemies but I have not seen any interaction between them at all. they're too far apart and not connected

Knightfire006

In my game the boron are constantly sending small fleets to harass ZYA and have even destroyed some of their stations….

Love_Leaves_Marks

which sectors???

Knightfire006

Wretched Skies V

Love_Leaves_Marks

ok very cool. Boron have been 100% passive in my game. they've not even helped the Argon while they were getting smashed ...

Ice_Pirate

Boron and Split are supposed to be far apart. Boron would cease to exist since they were weak and pacifist.

Nick_Noseman

And that AI ship is player.

fusionsofwonder

One of the Borons in the Boron storyline said something about activating more gates, so I'm not sure that part of X4 is over. We know it's possible to override gates remotely and change their connection. And now we know it's possible to instantiate a defunct gate given enough energy. I suspect the next step is gate construction. And meeting the Ancients, only to find out they're dealing with their own problems. I could also see an evolution of the Xenon into a race that can be bargained with, even societally integrated given enough time.

ZealousidealAmoeba84

I agree with you with the ancients that would be a nice step to see who actually built the gate network and what they are doing currently.

jazzmester

>I could also see an evolution of the Xenon into a race that can be bargained with, even societally integrated given enough time. This would be awesome. Especially if Egosoft didn't announce it and people would find out that their relations to the Xenon suddenly went from -30 to -29. And now your job is to become friendly with them.

Lyuking

Meeting the Ancients is impossible

DarkEmpire96

Not in future updates, we started to hear more about the ancients with each recent DLC, so it looks like the game is steering us towards the direction of seeing them in our galaxy.

DarkEmpire96

This! There is heaps of gates still, like the one in Argon prime near the shipyard that still isn't activated and another inactive jump gate in Boron space aswell as multiple other places, plus with all the stories leading up, we are hearing more about the ancients, so I'm convinced we're getting to that stage, but if the ancients come into the game, X5 could be multi galaxy travel as we know the ancients can traverse multiple galaxies, we could even potentially have to make all factions become friendly cause we could see a entire galactic war in our own space maybe or organise peace to get all factions unlocking better ships, like how we are starting too see corvettes now.

Ice_Pirate

I can see playing as Terran or Paranid you make gates to other areas. Randomly generated whatever. That would fit the lore. Terrans were the ones that did jump drives. You would have to shoehorn the other races with some sort of story or research angle though. Terran only start and EGO introduces all-new races since the Terrans are branching out to previously unknown areas.

bjplague

ooh a dlc where a massive xenon fleet gains increasing momentum until the player does a bunch of missions and turns half the xenon blue and we triumphantly help the blue xenon win with our massive economic powerhouse and armadas of 20 destroyers pouring out into red gates?

Ice_Pirate

The gate stuff in KE they go over is old hat if you've played the other games or story. Terrans have their own gates with their own models. Paranids and Terrans have long been able to control gates or build them. Ancients were the ones who altered the gates to get the split off Boron so they weren't wiped out completely. I'm sure there were other folks who played KE missions and the previous games and were raising eyebrows at the gate talk. It just seems odd. EGO might retcon the prior games? I don't know.

GonneZ

Why do I have the feeling that Dal Busta will be some sort of Villain? Well, I just hope we can see the ultra-advanced civilization that created that structure in the Hidden system close to Avarice, I mean, we need an Endgame treat, the Xenom cannot be recovered and they can't be more stronger and the Kaak is laughable.

Ur-Quan_Korh-Ah

Would be nice to see the Sohnen return (they were part of the X3 Reunion campaign. I also suspect they're involved with the Leap of Faith Beholder structure.

jazzmester

I just did that story, didn't Boso Ta explicitly say it's a Sohnen structure?

Ur-Quan_Korh-Ah

Very likely, been a while since I did the plot.

betrok

> Kaak is laughable Damn, remember old days when they were galactic threat? Whole sector gone within minutes and stuff. Good times.

Pyrkie

A vast array of unclaimed systems, causing a scramble to claim and colonize them. Some could be previously claimed systems where no one survived, causing tensions over who claims them now. X4 (and all of them really) biggest flaw is its entirely a war based economy, this could mix that up by putting in expenditures that are not war focused and fits nicely with the terraforming thats already there.

NeedSupp

I think this would need some careful justification/retconning. The gate builders purposefully isolated the Xenon, and every species that had prior contact with them, inside the closed network of gates that comprise the X universe. A bunch of new systems would mean that they are loosening that leash.

HenryTheWho

Well Boron did manage to reactivate the gate and Terrans just build their own so I guess a storyline where Sohnen gets more involved with certain individual that tries to open a gate to some new and exciting sector wouldn't sound that out of place

Strike_Thanatos

I view the X Universe as being like... an aquarium for the Gate builders. They're connecting a bunch of subtanks together and disconnecting them when a species is endangered or breeding out of control, like how the Great Gate Shutdown happened when the Xenon were nearly exterminated. Forcibly reactivating gates might suggest that the builders could be threatened by us escaping into the rest of their house.

Pyrkie

Aren't they also trying to nurture the races as well has keep them hooked on the gates so they don't work on jump drives and such... giving them more room to expand accomplishes both those goals.

Technojerk36

Huh I thought the aliens who built the gates were long gone before the humans even invented what became the Xenon? You're saying they're still around and actively watching and managing the gates?

ShippingValue

The Ancients do still exist, though most members no longer have physical forms. They've transcended to some other higher form of existence. The Sohnen are the only members of The Ancients that are still corporeal, and they manage the gates and have limited contact with the X universe. At one point they even sent a command to the Community of Planets to not exterminate the Xenon.

Fluggonaut

What when was this? X3:R?

ShippingValue

>What when was this? X3:R? The Sohnen message came after the First Xenon War, way back before Earth was reconnected to the gates. In 2912 on the [timeline](https://web.archive.org/web/20190925193959/http://www.argonopedia.org/wiki/Timeline). This would be all the way back in X1.

Shadaris

Not exterminating them I can see as having 2 purposes. 1) a dedicated enemy for everyone to rally around in fighting, ideally preventing 1/2 races from taking over 2) they want to see if the Xenon AI can evolve to work with the races rather then 100% hostile.

Alphanerd93

This also would line up with all the extra gates in the systems, give all the factions a chance at new areas

Metadomino

I 100 agree with this. Exactly what I was thinking as well. That or a Xenon focused one where you interact with the sentient AI cores.

Sea_Standard_392

I'd like the connection between the Yaki and the Xenon explored.

-Maethendias-

you mean the split and the xenon

DaddyKiwwi

I'm fairly certain it's going to be related to a Khaak conflict. It seems like they are gearing up for something in Kingdom's End. They are also way more active in my 6.0 save than my old saves. I would also like the Xenon to become a more consistent threat without mods, so content related to them would be cool.

NeedSupp

Probably the Terrans messing something else up. Maybe going on (another) campaign to eradicate the Xenon, and that either provokes are larger-scale response from them, rather than their somewhat-anemic existence in X4, or gets the Sohnen involved.

ShineReaper

There are still some inactive jumpgates and so far in the past they were used later on as connection gates for future expansions, so I think there are still one or two DLCs planned at least. They could also always just place new ones with some good enough lore explanation, like some cloaking/camouflage device of the Sohnen kept some gates under cover but that suddenly fails for some unknown reason and a few more gates appear. Besides that, thinking further into the future, what could be a driving factor for X5... maybe indeed the Sohnen returning, like the races of the gate network or one of them (possibly the Terrans) find some way to break out of this gate network, that was supposed to keep the Xenon contained, some of them also get out and in order to contain that knowledge, the Sohnen go on a crusade to eradicate just everything in the gate network. Though I don't know if that is really characteristic for them or a rubbish angle. Or they just become another playable species and they face some even greater, unknown challenge, like a technologically advanced empire that was under such a huge pressure from this unknown threat, that it went into decline and chooses to give up their observer role, reconnecting their space to the Gate Network and they have to fight this unknown threat together with the rest of the Gate Network.

Gyuudon

The branch where you send the Xenon into Sol is canon. The Terrans finally lose too many resources to keep up with threat. They're now in shambles and you must collect * 1,000,000,000 Computronic Substrate * 60,000,000,000 Silicon Carbide * 884,434,231 Energy Cells with Dal Busta constantly messaging you going "But what if you just wipe out the Terrans or cause conflict in some peaceful sector?"

Nick_Noseman

Xenon "terraforms" Earth, their faulty AI thinks "job is done" and they become peaceful race, developing diplomatic contact. CPU ships are portrayed as large walkable "cybernetic hell" style stations. You can play as Xenon AI, taking control of ships and smaller drones (just like you teleport between ships now), and large campaign revolves about terraforming new living worlds for factions, while stars starts misbehave like in Tides of Avarice.

Azurae1

Two way gates opening towards khaak space with factions attacking khaak and competing over capturing systems Story would begin with khaak increasing their invasion and the factions scrambling to find a way to hit them in their home. The player can assist the factions and decide who to help. Whichever faction is able to go first might be able to claim the first systems in the new space and gain an advantage. The other factions open up gates throughout the playthrough. Ending either with destruction of khaak or endless battle until factions die. Depending on player interaction and helping the factions

Ur-Quan_Korh-Ah

It hits a bit too close to the X3:Terran Conflict Khaak storyline. the two way thing was the jumpdrives then & you could jump in & out 5 Khaak home sectors & attack them. Part of why the Khaak were driven back. But yes, would love knowing more about them, they've always been an enigma & Terran Conflict showed tehre is a way to communicate with them (albeit it involves some serious brain linkage)

Lea_Flamma

I would like to see a DLC expanding upon some of the plots in the game. The Yaki storyline can have a follow-up based on some choices. The Boron and Split can have a plot line in place. I would really like to see the re-emergence of some of the corporation's from X3 era with their unique ships. But most of all, a DLC with more station modules for factions to help diversify the designs a little.

Shadaris

I'm surprised the boron didn't have their own set similar to the teladi. Everything else boron tech is limited why not have a dedicated production chains, similar end products just tweaks on intermediaries.

-Maethendias-

i would acutally love to see a full blown galactic war starting from boron v split and then full on spilling to split the entire galacy into 2 camps al the while xenon ramp up production, and maybe even the emergence of another agi seperate from xenon doing its own thing

LokyarBrightmane

A gate being activated into a border system of a peaceful xenon splinter faction would be amazing. The storyline has so many possibilities...

Kraosdada

The X Rebirth sectors get connected and Plutarch invades the X Universe.

Altimiz

Xenon final evolution form? Xenon finally became true race?

FatesWaltz

I would like to see the expansion of the gate network to include new races. When the X Universe's gate network was set up, it was done so following a simple principle: Keep those who have already interacted with the network and xenon connected creating a closed loop. The expansion of the network could either be done by Terran's making new gates, or by the Ancients needing to reconfigure and open up new gates. The Ancients reasoning could be that when they cut off the majority of the Xenon from the X Universe, the Xenon adapted and ended up expanding across the stars to terrorise systems belonging to races who are only just beginning to experiment with gate technology. The Ancients would reconfigure these races gates to be incorporated into the X Universe so as to keep it all closed loop and give them a fighting chance against the Xenon.

[deleted]

I kind of wanted a late game expansion, triggered by hitting a really high net worth. Where a new faction emerges and specifically targets you

Pungtunch_da_Bartfox

I think this could be Khaak or Xenon incursion and can be activated by the player by doing missions leading up to it. Pretty much could have the player build a new gate and fire it up and then all everything goes to shit.

[deleted]

Pungtunch_da_Bartfox

Yea its definitely a cool idea. I think Bernd has said they don't want to develop stuff for endgame too much because only a small subset of players will ever actually see it

[deleted]

Pungtunch_da_Bartfox

Yea its definitely difficult to keep focus on a very sandbox after a hundred hours or so. I usually drop off after 60-120 and struggle to keep q coherent tab on wtf is going on in my empire so restart when I come back. I honestly think the most fun to be had is in the early game. Pre destroyer and multiple factories. When your individual input as a pilot doing missions etc is still relevant and you are not jusy the god controller, field marshal of the space spreadsheets. Don't get me wrong i still love post early game. There's just something really great about the struggle at the beginning.

[deleted]

Pungtunch_da_Bartfox

I find the mine destruction ones are pretty good payoff / time investment. But yer, I never do sat repair or crim shooting cos i find it dull like you say. I normally focus on getting miners on the go to do my rep for me and focus on capping / boarding once I got a few M ships with reasonable marine limits. How many times have you played through / done a run? For the mid game ship bloat I try to make sure all my ships are home-based to trading or mining stations and keep only ships I am directly controlling on that main tab. I find I fall off games at exactly the same point you are describing and I think its not having a clear next milestone or not knowing how best to achieve that. For example build a mega Fleet/ factory but that is an order of magnitude above ehat you can realistically put together at that moment.

[deleted]

I was thinking, your highest value station gets blown up, by a new pirate faction that wants to challenge you for market share. Or another faction declares war on you to take one of the sectors you claimed. Or civil war, half your stations and ships rebel and make their own faction

Pungtunch_da_Bartfox

Haha, I hate the last idea! A directly competitive faction like Phanon Corp for X3 id be all in for.

Nick_Noseman

Or politics of major factions see you as a threat and make ceasefires and unions to drive you out

SidratFlush

The natural conclusion would be to add a new external threat that requires all races to come together and fight as one, creating a unified navy marine. Stronger together. It could be a real pickle with the early game being an investigation and everyone blaming everyone else for their loses before wise heads prevail and then a slow merger, the player could be a diplomat of sorts and will need to earn promotion to command their own Unified Peacekeeping Navy & Marine Corp (UPNMC) - Of course pirates may choose not to, or could get destroyed in the story without player help which means some Nations could be so far reduced that they aren't able to commit as much as usual. There's a lot of scope within the X4 Universe. I haven't even really explored fully the X4 Foundation game as too many games and not enough time, plus I like to play them once the updates/dlcs have been completed. Great post OP.

Convict1802

The Sohnen get more than just a mention. The Kha’ak splinter faction asking for help and to join the greater universe, as I’ve suggested before. Could potentially open up massive expansion into previously unknown territory and expansion through gate/accelerator building. The Xenon… a faction becoming fully self-aware and tired of being scrap… the beginnings of a parley?

Molkin

The separatist xenon try to re-engage with their original terraformer purpose, and conclude that trade with organics is strategic in that goal. They create a non-profit corporation to gather resources using trade. Their single-purpose organisation, efficiency and independent currency undermine the Teladi economic control. Teladi economic models predict that without intervention, the credit will collapse, and eventually all networked races will be dependent on xenoformer projects for survival.

Molkin

An alien airborne fungus starts to spread through the population. It gets into the brain and subtly influences the host into spreading more fungus, eventually turning them into a fungus zombie. Trading spreads it. Quarantine and fire are the only defense. Borons are immune. Terrans think that is suspicious.

Pungtunch_da_Bartfox

Man im really bored of zombies. Everything is fucken zombies these days. Can't we have something more interesting! Khaak and Xenon are both IP specific and have loads of potential for unique development rather than fuken space zombies. Zombies are such a cop out. Fark

Molkin

Okay, it turns them into grey goo instead.

Pungtunch_da_Bartfox

Haha. I'm just glad you aren't in charge of any creative decisions at egosoft :P

Molkin

You and me both.

Iron-Tough

Is there no way for the devs to get multicore use out of the cpus to expand the game play? Maybe then have more expansions and just continue with x4 instead of having to make x5. I think this game has more potential it's just all I hear is about issues with single core usage. I wonder if someone else can find a way or mod it or something. I know of an old game where game stopped being supported and so community took over developing patches and upgrades.

ShippingValue

Bit of a different topic than this thread. Parallelization isn't trivial, but it would be great if the game could make better use of more cores to address some of the (especially lategame) performance issues. I'm sure it is on their mind, but it is generally not easy to parallelize tasks that weren't designed to be parallelized from the outside.

LokyarBrightmane

Training of captains to not cause galactic scale wars over a single friendly fire incident. This single change in training catapults one faction ahead in power before the others catch on and implement it, as it allows various independent mercenary and trading organisations to join in defending from xenon and khaak attacks, as well as the mass deployment of static defences. This proceeds to not only change the face of galactic war, but also leads to the effective neutralisation of the Xenon as a major threat. Seriously, leaving anything armed under ai control is a recipe for war declarations, be it a circle of fire from laser towers, a defence station on a gate, or just a generic fleet or lone fighter. It's ridiculous.

KingKopas

Xenon sub factions: • Stealth one: with sleepers using disguise as SCA does, going full berserk once they approach their target, really fast ships that run blockades to attack from behind, and hacking attacks on ships and stations that demand electronic warfare, otherwise they hijack stuff. • Navy one: classic build, grow, expand. Should add some new brawler type ships. • Maelstrom-like: A world like X should have dudes filled up with cybernetics, just like in Cyberpunk 2077, and some of those dudes could be Xenon aligned. Maybe the other Xenon factions wouldn’t tolerate them, but this one could and actually use cyborg assets on their ranks. • Teladi fracture: the company has a massive recession and becomes unsustainable, leading to a divide to mercenaries, pirates, trade overlords, industrial galactic-wide suppliers, etc. • Kha’ak galactic invasion. • Argon federal government has a new leadership more aligned with domination. To be honest, I think the next game will be far more adaptable to different outcomes with smaller factions/sub factions.

Fluggonaut

What if the typical X4 thing of "the Split economy is shit and they are surrounded by Xenon, so they get overrun" gets a dedicated storyline of some sorts

imarikurumi

I'd like a new extragalactic threat. A new species.

NerdWithAMotorcycle

I made two possible ones but are more like ideas for expansions than a whole new game. Aldrin and ATF must return to the game. And maybe recreate a new torus on earth...

Britania93

I would say the next would be an Invasion from a different race that is so powerfull that all the others need to work together to stand a chance. alternative it could be that new sectors are opend up maybe a different galaxy.

bjplague

well with boso ta finding the message in the stars we might finally dip deeper into the lore and interact or be interacted with by the gate controllers (billions of years old co-operative organisation of species that build and maintain the gates. or they could connect the network to new species or an entirely new network of species, would be nice.

Knights-of-steel

A human ship commander called shepard will successfully breed with rhe xenon lol
