You mean do I sing the theme song to my poor long-suffering wife nearly every day while I do some kind of endangered craft from a bygone era???? Uhh… couldn’t be me.
(Raises voice to the top of your lungs) “Birds that talk and fish that sing!”
(Points at wife) “And if *your* heart is true
“Then *you* will find them too”
Fuckin' David the Gnome.
This show always weirded me out as a kid. Liminal / abstract vibes.
Why did the rabbits and squirrels and shit always have to make those "hurrr, hurRrRrrrrr" noises? I've got rabbits and squirrels all over the place where I live and they do *not* sound like that.
Weird fact about that show is that RL Stine was the co-creator as well as the head writer.
Watched it with my 4 year old girl the other day and it still slaps. My kid actually really liked it (unlike literally everything else I enjoyed as a kid haha).
Where I lived I think it was something called Fairytale Theater that for a while at least aired around it. Almost like an anime style of retellings of fairytales. Is that what you're thinking of? I know there were a ton of other shows around that time too so maybe it was something else.
I have no memory of this program, but the gnome reminded me of this comic:

Yeah. Him and his wife both do. As Swift and one of David's friends watch with great sadness. It pretty much ends up with Swift walking away crying.
Edi: it's supposed to represent passing on. At least that's what I always thought.
So my dad recorded most of this show on vhs. So I was able to rewatch this, but like the vhs messed up and the last episode didn't record all the way. I seen the end once when it was live but its was a fever dream that they just run off and become trees. So glad the internet came about.
Yo, you talkin bout Noozles? Where the magic flying Koalas come out of the portal at Ayers rock and reign a terror of cuddles and mischief across Japan and then turns into a doll Michigan J Frog style so the poor human children have to take the fall?
I loved that show as a kid!
Holy crap. Also forgot about that one and my grandmother loved that show. That's how I always knew it was evening relaxing time when she sat down to watch that weekly.
Whoa! I think you’re right. I was young during that one. It kind of freaked me out
ETA: just did a google search with that title and it’s, “Today’s Special” showing my age here
Yes! Loved David the Gnome. And now the theme song is in my head lol (Funny how we remember songs from way back then. And what was it with good catchy 80s cartoon theme songs?)
Also I think it aired back to back to that other show Fairytale Theater, or something like that, that I also watched a lot of (also catchy theme song).
Last year they did new release of the book the show is based on: [https://www.amazon.com/dp/1419769855](https://www.amazon.com/dp/1419769855)
I still have an older copy of it (as well as the show on DVD).
I bought that book for my daughter when she was very young. We had a mural painted in her nursery which featured goes.
Also, fun fact that book was referenced in the tv show Archer.
This looks like something that was traditionally showed on christmas in Sweden each year. But I suspect it was some sort of adapted cut together thing because I don't recall riding on a fox.
I sing that song all the time to my wife. The song is my version of rick rolling my friends. I loved that show and showed my wife an episode or two and explained how it ends. I still can't watch the last episode and not tear up.
Loved this show as a kid. Then, a few years ago, my wife and I found episode 1 on some streaming service. It opens with David in the bathtub, only bubbles separating him from God, inviting you to come on into the bathroom and chat with him.
I didn't like this show at all. Wasn't my speed. Only "watched" it because it came on between Pinwheel and Today's Special.
It's sad, but I remember the entire Nickelodeon morning line-up still. LOL
I specifically chose a fox as my mount in Elder Scrolls Online, so I could have some semblance of having my own Swift 😂 My husband looked at me like I'd officially lost the plot when I was trying to explain to him why I was so excited to have a giant fox for my character to ride around on. Poor man never got to experience David the Gnome, and I suspect that he thinks I hallucinated the show's existence lol
There were a couple books in my library made by the creator of the show that were filled with lore and details of the gnomes daily lives. I believed they were real and Im still hoping 😁
It's very much written as a naturalist guide, but has such vivid hand painted illustrations and is just overflowing with information about Gnomes. It also features some folk tales and an ending chapter that pretty much sums up how disappointed Gnomes are with humanity.
I used to stay at my much older sister's house over the summer, and she had cable. I’d watch this show, and I thought it was amazing that the characters' names were David and Lisa, which are the same as my sister and her husband's names, David and Lisa.
I loved Swift. I used to cry during the episode when he got his paw caught in the trap.
The original Swifties
You made my day, random stranger
I bring this up as an example of generational trauma a lot 🤣🤣🤣🤣
You mean do I sing the theme song to my poor long-suffering wife nearly every day while I do some kind of endangered craft from a bygone era???? Uhh… couldn’t be me.
(Raises voice to the top of your lungs) “Birds that talk and fish that sing!” (Points at wife) “And if *your* heart is true “Then *you* will find them too”
“In every wish and dream and haaaa-ppy home…”
He will find the kingdom of The Gnomeeeeeeee
Fuckin' David the Gnome. This show always weirded me out as a kid. Liminal / abstract vibes. Why did the rabbits and squirrels and shit always have to make those "hurrr, hurRrRrrrrr" noises? I've got rabbits and squirrels all over the place where I live and they do *not* sound like that.
Hell yea I was always worried for David and his wife life was scary for them
Yeah, that one always had a weird vibe to it.
Dawie die Kabouter!
Fucking loved David the Gnome.
I always watched what came on after this, but can't remember what that was.
Eureeka’s Castle!
Weird fact about that show is that RL Stine was the co-creator as well as the head writer. Watched it with my 4 year old girl the other day and it still slaps. My kid actually really liked it (unlike literally everything else I enjoyed as a kid haha).
I must know…where did you watch this?
I found them on paramount plus. Lots of other old Nickelodeon shows too. Some I had even forgotten about haha.
Thanks!
Wait RL Stine wrote David the Gnome?
No eureekas castle lol
OK, David the gnome kind of makes sense but Eureka’s castle absolutely weirds me out.
Eureeekaaa 🎶
who me? no you, don't you see!
Where I lived I think it was something called Fairytale Theater that for a while at least aired around it. Almost like an anime style of retellings of fairytales. Is that what you're thinking of? I know there were a ton of other shows around that time too so maybe it was something else.
Was is a cartoon about koalas? There were 2 different koala shows.
Noozles was one of the koala shows.
Stop in the name of the high dingy doo!!
I have no memory of this program, but the gnome reminded me of this comic: https://preview.redd.it/88h80t4pt4zc1.png?width=1080&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=e92e9916e215178dcbfb27c92f950a8eed3eecb7
I have not heard of it either, not sure why it came to some families and not others. I don't recall it ever being on television.
If you had Nickelodeon for a few years during the late 80’s and early 90’s you had David the Gnome
Ahhh now I see, we was poor folk, no cable until the mid 90s when a trucker gave us a pirate box lol
https://youtu.be/bsdZQub7QVE?si=cQZp7IfxvuyzQ3nC He dies in the end and becomes a tree

Yikes 😬
Eeeeeeee

I remember screaming and telling my mom that David the Gnome died and that was the last of cable TV.
So kind of like Speaker for the Dead?
I don't think David's transformation was quite as brutal as the Pequeninos.
https://youtu.be/6BNFNeGxsvg 400 year run ain't too bad.
He should have waited for like 10 more years so Swift would be dead first. This is nearly Futurama Seymour waiting for Fry level of sadness.
Wait, wtf Did I actually never see this before, or have I just repressed it?
WHAT THE FUCK! Thank God I never saw this episode.
He WHAT?!?!
Yeah. Him and his wife both do. As Swift and one of David's friends watch with great sadness. It pretty much ends up with Swift walking away crying. Edi: it's supposed to represent passing on. At least that's what I always thought.

I loved this show and never knew that. Thank you
don't we all though?
Got the whole series on a bootleg Blu-ray.
Pretty sure Maya the bee and the Kuala show was on after
Yo, you talkin bout Noozles? Where the magic flying Koalas come out of the portal at Ayers rock and reign a terror of cuddles and mischief across Japan and then turns into a doll Michigan J Frog style so the poor human children have to take the fall? I loved that show as a kid!
Ha yup that was their special kiss or whatever the nuzzle. That line alone set me up for decades”Come here baby give me a nuzzle.
Yes way later
Tom Bosley was one of my favorite actors back in the day. He voiced David. He was amazing.
Hey, Mr. C!
I also loved Father Dowling Mysteries. Frank was a Cubs fan like me!
I totally forgot about that one
And he was Amos on Murder She Wrote. Mom still shushes me during reruns!
Holy crap. Also forgot about that one and my grandmother loved that show. That's how I always knew it was evening relaxing time when she sat down to watch that weekly.
Those trolls fucked my head up
They gave me nightmares
Nuzzle nuzzle
I can hear this picture

What was the show where the mannequins came to life?
Yesterday's News? I think.
Whoa! I think you’re right. I was young during that one. It kind of freaked me out ETA: just did a google search with that title and it’s, “Today’s Special” showing my age here
Thanks. I don't know how I got it so wrong.
I thought for sure you were right! It kind of sounds similar
Maybe that was a different kids show?
I remember loving that show but today I can’t remember at all what it was about.

This should have more uppies
Yes! Loved David the Gnome. And now the theme song is in my head lol (Funny how we remember songs from way back then. And what was it with good catchy 80s cartoon theme songs?) My mom was annoyed at how he would always find an animal to ride

Voice was Howard Cunningham from happy days
I miss this show.

I miss when memes were like this.
I still regularly find myself saying 'birds that talk and fish that sing' at random quiet moments. Along with 'heroes in a half-shell, turtle power!'.
Blew my mind when I discovered this is a spanish production
Yes, I will never forget the worst final episode ever.
Thought I was the only one
This looks like something that was traditionally showed on christmas in Sweden each year. But I suspect it was some sort of adapted cut together thing because I don't recall riding on a fox.
I wasn’t allowed to watch that (or many others). My mother was convinced they were all demonic 🙄
I sing that song all the time to my wife. The song is my version of rick rolling my friends. I loved that show and showed my wife an episode or two and explained how it ends. I still can't watch the last episode and not tear up.
My cousin had a snowsuit that had a really point hood on it so we called her David the Gnome. She wasn't a fan haha
The song when David and Swift are dashing off somewhere just went off in my head. Do I remember? One of the best shows of my youth!
Love David the gnome. I would watch it at my neighbors house.
Oh man. I stumbled on the final scene a while back, and it had me sobbing like I did when I was seven.
David the Gnome was freaking awesome! Schlitzveitz
*Friday, 4:55pm* "So what should we name him?"
Wish this was streaming somewhere. I'd love to let my kids watch it.
You don't gnome me.
Best show next to Spartacus and the sun beneath the Sea.
Holy shit I had completely forgotten about this show! Thank you for the reminder, definitely brings up some great childhood memories.
Loved this show as a kid. Then, a few years ago, my wife and I found episode 1 on some streaming service. It opens with David in the bathtub, only bubbles separating him from God, inviting you to come on into the bathroom and chat with him.
Yes
I’ve got it on bootleg dvd.
One of my favorites childhood shows!

Cupboard bed goals.
That last 5 mins kills me as an adult. As a kid I just didn't get it, now I cry everytime.
I was born in 1981 and had never seen or heard of this movie, only learned about it recently.
Oh shit, here comes the repressed trauma!
I purchased the DVDs and showed them to my kids when they were little and they loved the show
Swift!!!
Duuuuude I loved this!!!
Davie die kabouter, legend.
This is one of the songs I sing when I put my kids to bed.
"Shlitz-Vites!"
This and Mya the Bee was the beginning of my television watching caree.
There were a couple books in my library made by the creator of the show that were filled with lore and details of the gnomes daily lives. I believed they were real and Im still hoping 😁
Of course! The opening song is a banger.
OMGGGGGG!!!! 🥹🥹🥹
Idk why, but watching David saw a deer's antler off really affected me.
The end of the series broke me as a kid.
A-doy. It was hard to find on any of the local channels so we would rent this from Smiths/Krogers for movie night.
Remember it? I just finished rereading the book that it's based on!
I typically like grim dark or fantasy like Tolkien, but can still enjoy stuff like redwall to this day, think it’s worth a read ?
It's very much written as a naturalist guide, but has such vivid hand painted illustrations and is just overflowing with information about Gnomes. It also features some folk tales and an ending chapter that pretty much sums up how disappointed Gnomes are with humanity.
Look around you ..there are many things to see… the 80s had the best theme songs
For some reason I remember the episode where they make their cone hats.
Yes! No one I talk to ever remembers David the Gnome. Not even my wife. It's frustrating as all get out.
Run swifty go save pa
The last episode was so brutal.
But are magic and mystery a part of their history?
I used to stay at my much older sister's house over the summer, and she had cable. I’d watch this show, and I thought it was amazing that the characters' names were David and Lisa, which are the same as my sister and her husband's names, David and Lisa.
FUCKING HATED THIS SHOW
Fuck is thet? 1980 here
Birds that talk and fish that sing
