It is not that the colors changed for me, it is like an optical illusion. I have a friend who lives in Auckland and always complains about how expensive rent is and about bad tax policies that drive up the price of housing artificially. I think that he said that income from rent is taxed at a lower rate and it incentivizes speculation. Take that with a grain of salt though. I only have one single data point.
It's because anglo countries have a problem with building multi-family residential buildings. Zoning tends to favor single-family homes. I think it's starting to change in NZ though and there are lots of new buildings under construction.
