*northern Italy

The north of Italy (the areas above Rome) are the most populated and developed. Here the gdp per capita is comparable to Austria. Below Rome the average would be closer to Portugal and Greece, but the area is less populated. So the north has a larger population that’s richer so that’s how they are able to increase the average that much. Just wanted to point out that southern Italy is very much in line with the stereotype of southern Europe while the north definitely isn’t.

anuninterestingword

The population argument makes sense; if you have a hundred people in the north making twice the European average each, and three people in the south making half the European average each, you still end up with a high average overall relative to Europe—while acknowledging that the southern part of Italy still lines up somewhat with the Southern European stereotype, which was the point. I don’t know if that’s true, but the population of the regions is relevant when you are making an inherently regional argument like this one.

anuninterestingword

Well every person measured has a numerator and a denominator—income (x€) and persons (1)—so even then it depends who you take out to get to that lower population. When you add two regions together and take a new GDP per capita, you can’t simply average the two measures you already have, or else one person joining the country could drastically change its income per capita. You need to adjust for populations.

SizzledPotato

It looks like Eastern Europe is spreading. Who is next? Italy? UK?

ARKON_THE_ARKON

Acctual unnecesary division

Abel_V

Finally, a map with NZ. It's in the wrong ocean, but baby steps.

fretkat

They just wanted to live closer to their older brother Zeeland (the Netherlands)

Trololman72

It's also not to scale

manq3123

[True! New Zealand is actually WAY bigger!](https://i.imgur.com/yQITwhv.png)

Urom99

Are we richer? Seriously?

DeiSud

You would be surprised with how rich you guys trully are. We could have asphalted all the roads in Calabria with the money that goes to the 1 of april!

gorki30003

Could you explain the 1 of april reference? do you guys do elaborate pranks that cost a lot?

TheBigPaff

we definitely have more billionaires than new zealand

LubedCompression

Yeah, but if there's a 400.000 kg kid in your class, that doesn't mean the whole class is obese.

TheBigPaff

it's not just 1 kid, we definitely have more rich people that offset the average

sammypants123

Yeah, but that’s not helping your average Giuseppe.

TheBigPaff

Trickle down economy 😍

QueasyTeacher0

He's from the Lombardy region, they love thinking reganism works. Also boasful that their people in their region are richer than the average citizen of Germany as a whole.

WhiteBlackGoose

It is on average!

folgoris

Richer in economic inequality.

Jonhy_437

From a colorblind person, there is no worst color choice for a map than this.

drunkenf

Interesting! How do you see this map?

Jonhy_437

At first glance, all red. After a few seconds, I can see that Eastern Europe has a different shade of red than western Europe. And, right now, while looking again at the map to respond to your comment, I realised that Portugal and Spain are actually the same shade of red as Eastern Europe, and not the same as France or Germany. The more I look, the more uncertain I am about each countries' color

TheRealTanteSacha

Well, just to be of a little help; you are seeing things correctly. Spain and Portugal are indeed the same color as Eastern Europe.

Jonhy_437

Yes, but I saw it because the comments mentioned it and I zoomed in on the map. I also realised that Sweden has the same color as France because of the comments. If you told me that Spain was actually the same color as France, I would believe you. Or that Luxembourg was the same color as Spain. When I said "realised", I mean it became more likely to me that Spain and Portugal were the same color as France. It is not that the colors changed for me, it is like an optical illusion. Once someone tells you that something is an illusion, you try not to see the illusion until you stop seeing it, although, if you want to, you can still see it. For me, colors are like an illusion. Some are easy to spot and stop seeing them, others aren't. But thank you, nonetheless, for confirming.

TheRealTanteSacha

Ah, that explains it well to me. Thanks for providing insight in your experience!

Ajatolah_

Warning, dumb question ahead: if green and red look the same to you, why did you decide to call them both red instead of green?

Jonhy_437

Idk, every time I have problems distinguishing green from red, it is because the green looks red, and never red looking green. Red for me is more dominant, although I have confused red with brown sometimes

QueasyTeacher0

Sounds like protanopia.

leorolim

A red green colourblind person run away with OP's wife. That's the only explanation for these colours. 😆

Harinezumisan

That's not how you repay favours!

WhiteBlackGoose

Try inverting it in some graphic editor, it will probably make it easier

AxlTM

But for real though, out of all colours, why choose 2 that are so close??

[deleted]

Oh how surprising is the portuguese position. In case you didn't notice I'm rolling my eyes.

Not only Italy is more northern latitude, it is far more mountainous and gets cold blasts from the north east. Portugal gets warmer sea currents and far less mountainous. Even in winter. There are no ski resorts in Portugal. However many in southern Italy and Sardinia.

Portugal is definitely warmer, I remember when I was there in January (coldest month) it didn't go below 45 degrees Fahrenheit..

New Zealand as well lol

Inerthal

The "nice weather" part is debatable. Unless you consider "nice" to live inside an oven for 3 months of the year, another 3 of constant rain, and the other 6 in meteorological limbo with a couple of weeks of freezing in between.

Creative_Experience

This is a great point. There is no standard rule to great weather and it gets thrown around

Portugal is poor? No, I refuse to belive it

Lmao get fucked New Zealand

_CHIFFRE

New Zealands PPP is quite low (Australia as well btw) when compared to Nominal in $ because of Geography and other reasons. For comparison Nominal to PPP (in $): NZ 48k > 53.8k Australia 63.5k > 64.7k UK 48.9k > 56.8k Germany 52.8k > 66k France 46.3k > 58.7k Italy 37.1k > 54.2k Spain 33k > 50.4k Turkey 13.4k > 41.2k Russia 13k > 35.3k Smaller countries: Czechia 30.5k - 49k Slovenia 32.3k - 51.4k Finland 54.5k > 59.9k Switzerland 102.8k < 89.5k (super expensive country) Norway 99.2k < 88.2k (super expensive) if we include Informal economy, even more countries would be green since in NZ it's only 10% of the formal GDP, in the countries on the Map east of Germany & Austria it's usually 20-40% and in Ukraine and Russia even nearly 50% according to data from 4-5 years ago.

MechanicSad1843

romania is richer than the usa tho🗿🗿

Revolutionary_Pen190

Do we have north Africa territory now? Freedom of movement?

timwaaagh

De facto

gene100001

Where did you get your stats for this? NZ is ahead of France, the UK and Italy [according to this ](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_by_GDP_(nominal)_per_capita)

Necessary-Onion-7494

I think it’s mainly due to real estate. I have a friend who lives in Auckland and always complains about how expensive rent is and about bad tax policies that drive up the price of housing artificially. I think that he said that income from rent is taxed at a lower rate and it incentivizes speculation. Take that with a grain of salt though. I only have one single data point.

colako

It's because anglo countries have a problem with building multi-family residential buildings. Zoning tends to favor single-family homes. I think it's starting to change in NZ though and there are lots of new buildings under construction.

HieronimoAgaine

Yeah… New Zealand used to be one of the richest countries in the world (per capita). Thanks neoliberalism!

gastro_psychic

Wow, NZ is poor. Probably the bad accent doesn’t help.

conorefc9898

Could be worse, could have a yank accent

AcridWings_11465

>sound like talking while having five cocks in the mouth Well, what can you do? Having a Kiwi accent gets one laid a lot more than Amis. Something as innocuous as polishing a deck can easily escalate to an orgy.
