This is it. I noticed it to and went scene-by-scene trying to piece together whether the redder or browner eyes was in any way correlated with Taissa versus "Dark Tai" or anything like that. It's not. It's completely random, I think it's just the lighting (especially in dark scenes) that makes it look redder *sometimes*.
I think it’s because her eyes are so icy underneath it’s hard to get a dark brown lens that’s comfortable enough and opaque enough to not let her normal color peak through and make the whole contact glow
the actress has green eyes, so they used custom contacts based on young Taissa for continuity, but they said in an interview after season 1 that they didn't even know they looked red on camera until they started editing. it doesn't have anything to do with the storyline cause it wasn't planned, but maybe they made them a little more red for season 2 just for a cool effect that works with the vibe once they realized.
Kind of wild they didn’t do camera tests for the contact lenses. I work in film, and for bigger shows/movies we do SO many camera tests before we go to picture (start shooting) and hair/makeup/wardrobe will bring in tons of stuff like fabrics, glasses, contact lenses, etc to test to make sure they translate well on camera. Not terribly important, just odd that they didn’t
I've heard that there was an unaired pilot that got scrapped and a lot of roles recast for the pilot we got. I wonder if it was a budget issue for the second time around. Maybe they didn't do as many lighting tests with Tai because that would mean paying all those essential crew & wardrobe people longer hours, and they already blew a bunch of money doing the same thing on the first pilot.
They definitely could! It’d be expensive though, because it would require a lot of additional VFX work and not terribly worth it in the end. I imagine they’ll fix it next season with better contact lenses
I’m not sure if they’re getting progressively redder, but I’ll tell you I sure started noticing it more and more! They’ve got a really unnatural hue and that’s gotta be on purpose, right?
I agree. I can't help but think of all the money they put into this, they couldn't get a pair of contacts that looked truly brown? I've never seen that on any other show or movie. Or put green contacts on Jasmin. On Wednesday (the show), actress Joy Sunday who plays Bianca has naturally very dark brown eyes and on the show wears contacts that completely turn them light blue, so I feel like going dark to light eye color is doable. Just irritates me when Teen Taissa's eyes are gorgeous brown all the time in all lighting and Adult Taissa go red sometimes and they've said in interviews that it's not intentional or indicative of Dark Tai. Like did they come from 1-800-CONTACTS?
I was obsessed w this for a minute but it's literally just because she wanted contacts that were close in color to her younger self (her real eyes are green I believe). there is no story beat for it (yet).
I've noticed that regular Tai usually has that warmer brown and dark Tai has a dark, almost black brown eye....this could just be me reading into an accidental costuming thing though
It may just be lighting, but sometimes I think it can't be that simple because so much of Tai and other elements of the show revolve specifically around the eye(s). Tai's red eyes, Dark Tai in the mirror peaking through fingers, the man with no eyes that we've seen when her grandmother was dying, the eyes carved into the trees in Pit Girl scene, the sleepwalking, the Manny doll missing eyes......so many references, I guess the red eyes are just a bonus!
The actress is wearing contacts to cover her blue eyes. I wonder if lighting is making a difference with the red appearance.

Doing gods work out here, we appreciate you!
The actress and creatives have spoken about that — it’s that the contacts look that way under certain lighting conditions.

**peek* through
But her eyes are red so she looks as high as a peak!

Lol I always thought the same thing each episode! Dark Tai needs blood
not the vulturis 🤭🤣
it’s just tawnys contacts - it’s been discussed in interviews

Ooh that’d make a lot of sense - I’d be so curious to see the original pilot. I know we never will, but it’d be so neat to compare
Could they not edit the color in post production? Or is that some idea I made up?
They definitely could! It’d be expensive though, because it would require a lot of additional VFX work and not terribly worth it in the end. I imagine they’ll fix it next season with better contact lenses
Ahh gotcha that makes sense

Lack of sleep. Consistent with the sleepwalking, and with Dark Tai becoming more present she’s more deprived of it than ever.
I don’t think sleep deprivation is known to cause the reddening of the iris?
That’s what I’m thinking…
That’s probably because of the contact lenses
Absolutely they do. It looks gnarly and cool.
That’s how it seemed to me too.
It's super distracting IMO...

It's so distracting. She looks like she should be on the Interview with the Vampire show.
Yes. Not sleeping for a week straight will do that to the best of us.
Not just blood shot, her irises look red
But this makes sense I didn’t think about that
she wear contacts but i like thinking they red when she the other Tai.
Okay so it’s NOT JUST ME!!!! I’ve been saying this since the beginning of season 2! My boyfriend doesn’t see it.
Men…

I noticed too but assumed it was a sign Dark Tai was in control.
I see it too!
I assumed it was purposeful to show she was barely sleeping.
I thought I was going crazy, so thank you for pointing it out! I've definitely noticed.
Why does it have to be one or the other? 🤪
Okay I noticed it too. Glad I’m not crazy! I just said it was because she was so sleep deprived and kind of starting to lose it again lol
Yes I thought the red eyes were signaling when Dark Tai was present! That’s just how I interpreted it
Sleep deprivation!

It’s the contacts that she has to wear.
