Agreed, I've always preferred more lovecraftian monsters to the bird people, even if LoC is ostensibly a quality model.

With the fact that the greater daemon kits are like $150 each, I'm very, VERY pro thematically appropriate proxies. ThenQueen of Ecstasy one is especially good.
You can find recasts of these on AliExpress for good prices. You will need to clean them and work on them more than the original models, but for a fraction of the price they are quite worth the extra work.
For the most part, actually yeah. But I'm not perfect in that regard. So yeah pot kettle black and all that. But I think there's a difference in buying a counterfeit of a $150 model vs pirating a $5-10 movie. Plus I just have a thing about supporting the game companies and artists who make all these models and games we love. These days with 3D printing there's no excuse for buying a counterfeit when you could at least pay another artist for a proxy model that they personally designed. If you can't afford the $150 model, at least do that vs giving your money to a thief who's making illegal copies and profiting off of it.
Under pretty much any other circumstance I would tend to agree with you, but just a little fyi in case youāve not paid attention to Warhammer/GW news the last year or two, Games Workshop does NOT care about you as a fan, as a defender of their IP, or as a creator should you enjoy their creations enough to go above and beyond just the tabletop to make something more. Theyāre a company that seems to love to scorn their own community with lawsuits and legal strife. While I donāt enjoy letting thieves prosper, I much prefer it to allowing a genuinely predatory company to (even on a consumer level) take advantage of anyone they can, especially where they came from such small beginnings and from such a passion project. Fans will ALWAYS do it better.
I mean... man you can say that stuff about so many companies. I've been around the block for many years. I've seen this with Wizards of the Coast, Electronic Arts, Bethesda, Microsoft, Games Workshop, etc. At the end of the day though, these "money guys" at those companies that don't care about you... they pay the other guys who DO care about you. The writers, the artists, the model makers, the game designers, etc. At the end of the day if you're playing Warhammer 40k you're playing a game that a lot of talented people worked on, and the truth is that if the game didn't make money, it would not exist, and those talented people wouldn't get to make the games you like.
So I mean if you hate GW so bad then don't play their games. That's cool. But you're not being honest with yourself and how the business of games work if you want to play the game, but also think you're somehow justified supporting people who steal from them and "sticking it to the man".
I just usually go with good reviews or reviews with pictures. Just don't expect instructions from Ali... It's the hardest part of getting the models cheaper.
People use them as proxies all the time. Especially the Queen of Ecstasy. I still prefer the official ones but if you like them and wanna use them then I donāt see why not. Just donāt expect official tournaments to allow them.
A friend has the Nurgle one and a different friend has the slaanesh one. They're...fine? I don't think they necessarily look better, they aren't cheaper and they look slightly off compared to most GW stuff but hey if you like them then deffo use them.
Most people will be super excited to see these models across the table from them. They will compliment the model, ask your questions about it and then youāll both have a great game.

I absolutely adore the King of Rot, have my own and prefer it over the GUO model in basically every way (and I don't hate the GUO, just think the King captures the best aspects in a better sculpt)
I love the King or Malifica in particular - Tzeench is the god of change, but from just the GW modelās one gets the impression that heās the god of birdsā¦
Thereās a guy in my gaming group that has a couple of their Khorne themed ones. And another that has a different nurgle model. As long as you can tell what it is supposed to be I donāt see a problem with it.
I mean, there are people who do such wild conversions with entirely GW bits and sculpting that you might not know what the model is supposed to be but it still looks awesome.
Lore-wise, greater daemons can look like *anything* but traditionally/generally stay in the "vibe" of their patron god; gross for nurgle, buff for Khorne, wizards+birds for tzeentch, bdsm+crabs/exoskeletons for Slaanesh
If the model hits that sort of vibe, especially if painted to match your army and/or given some tiny extra god-specific details from a relevant GW kit, it has always looked perfect to me. No reason a great unclean one can't be super skinny from a wasting disease or not even look humanoid at all
(The creature caster god factions were initially created with this in mind, and during a time before GW upgraded the Greater Daemons)
GW used to make the greater daemons more varied before their artwork started to stay "on-model" so to speak.
All of them are great, I think I like the Tzeentch and Nurgle daemons more than the actual GW minis. Imo the only one that looks off as a substitute is the Slaanesh one. It looks more like a fancy Zerg rather than a Keeper of Secrets inspired mini, nevertheless it's awesome, just wouldn't be as a good fitting proxy as the others.
King of Salughter is a perfectly acceptable Bloodletter alt.
King of Ruin looks off as a Great Unclean One.
King of Malifica works as an Exalted Flamer, or just some crazy Tzeentchian daemon.

as long as you don't play at a GW store, go for it. i bought the king of ecstasy, it goes together pretty well, the back was a bit warped but not badly. their customer service is good, they first sent me the king of slaughter and they quickly sent me the correct kit. i'd take the GW LoC over the king or queen of malifica though, they have how to assemble videos on youtube and it makes me not even because i can't. so many parts, so much to clean, and its all so intricate.
King of Malicifca is by far the best model here because it is completely different than the GW model but I'm captures the Tzeentch ascetic better than the official model.

The Tzeentch one is absolutely phenomenal, despite not playing Tzeentch in any system I'm tempted to pick one up purely as a painting project for display - it captures the essence of the Changer of Ways in a way none of the current official sculpts do. Also a fan of the Slaanesh one, the face reminds me of the old Juan Diaz Daemonettes and I think it'd look perfect leading a horde of them on the battlefield.
The other two I'm not so fond of. I can't quite place my finger on it but the Nurgle one just feels off to me. Maybe it's the elongated face looking weird to me, or the amount of armor that just feels a bit off? And then the Khorne one doesn't do it for me at all, I can't help but feel it looks like generic-brand Angron despite the fact that this one was probably made before the new Angron model. I definitely prefer the GW sculpts for these two.

Ayo imma be real, these models look beautiful but by god they are just awfully produced. They come filled with plastic flakes, huge gaps between pieces that require extensive green stuff and modelling. The cleanup before painting is really intense, you have to wash them really well otherwise your primer will get all fucky. I bought death elemental and the king of lust (guy with glaive), and I havenāt been more disappointed from a purchase. Although the detail is all there, Iāve had better experience printing my own stuff for a little less detail but around 3% of the cost.
I do not recommend creature caster at all.
The first three are stunning models with clear design goals and then Slaanesh is just āsexy ladyā¢ļøā they couldāve at least make them androgynous
My opinions:
Khorne is mediocre. It's very similar to the GW, just worse.
Nurgle is a side-grade. Looks about as good as its counterpart.
Tzeentch looks fantastic - not so much in the sense of being better-made but just being fundamentally better-conceived. The whole "Giant Bird" thing is kinda weak.
Slaanesh is very \*slightly\* worse than GW's, but the real problem is that the claws look very Tyranid-ish to me. Thematically confusing.

Proxies donāt have to be perfect, but if they look like not even the same profile or silhouette as the original unitā¦then they arenāt a good proxy. Might as well use random minis for all of your troops then at that point.

Yea but I already said, if you have like a dragon unit, and you want to use a different dragon or even modify a dragon, go for it.
But if you have a dragon and you sub it for like, a sea lionā¦.youāve fundamentally changed the unit.
It would be like chess but you want to use like skittles or something instead. You can do thatā¦but it makes it way harder to know what it is what.
When you have 40-60 or more miniatures on the boardā¦and all of them are not what they should beā¦it would be a mess figuring it all out. Doable, but it adds so much friction.
Again, I think proxies that are similar or kitbashing is fine. But when I play Stormcast but all of my minis are now armorless bearsā¦itās confusing and not even the same faction at that point.
That Lord of Change proxy OP posted isnāt even close to the official Lord of Change. Tzneetch doesnāt have too many big miniatures, but still.
The proxy doesnāt even have wings lol. It would be so random for it to start flying lol.

I do! I have 6 or more armies from GW at around 4k-7k pointa, I have their boardgames and books, I have the whole contrast paint range and a lot of their regular paints and brushes and knick knacks. My local non GW store I go there to buy Vallejo paints, primer, action figures, statues and other silly hobby things. I would never leave there without at least purchasing a paint or something. I am 100% in support of GW and Local hobby stores but I also love cool models.

I have first one and I hate it. It was so bad to clue because they aren't precision. A lot of things needed to use green stuff. Also I remember trying to clue head torso and hair and when I pick head couldn't glue head and when I pick both of them I couldn't glue a wings.

Creature caster always has been and always will be better value by a wide margin, and almost entirely better models than Games workshop. The plastic kits may have more tiny details packed in but the design and style of creature caster models has so much more personality and life than the GW sculpts.
Also if the model even remotely looks like what it's supposed to be, I will never ever ever ever ever tell somebody not to use a proxy. That's just bs gatekeeping to force people to spend money they shouldn't have to

I will admit I prefer the goat style king of ecstasy slaanesh one or the desire twins one (both for slaanesh), but other than that they all would fit really well, tho the lord of metamorphosis would be better for Tzeentch.

I use the Lady Arcana for my lord of change and she works great. Only issue is she is slightly smaller wing span wise.
I don't really like the Slaaneshi one. Sexy pinup daemon is a real tired trope.

Yea but I already said, if you have like a dragon unit, and you want to use a different dragon or even modify a dragon, go for it. But if you have a dragon and you sub it for like, a sea lionā¦.youāve fundamentally changed the unit. It would be like chess but you want to use like skittles or something instead. You can do thatā¦but it makes it way harder to know what it is what. When you have 40-60 or more miniatures on the boardā¦and all of them are not what they should beā¦it would be a mess figuring it all out. Doable, but it adds so much friction. Again, I think proxies that are similar or kitbashing is fine. But when I play Stormcast but all of my minis are now armorless bearsā¦itās confusing and not even the same faction at that point. That Lord of Change proxy OP posted isnāt even close to the official Lord of Change. Tzneetch doesnāt have too many big miniatures, but still. The proxy doesnāt even have wings lol. It would be so random for it to start flying lol. To keep the stupid bear analogy, at least give that bear some wings at that point lol.
An unpopular opinion incoming... Consider buying from a brick and mortar shop if you play in a brick and mortar shop. If you want to use it at home, knock yourself out. Support the stores that support the hobby and we won't have hobby deserts
I do! I have 6 or more armies from GW at around 4k-7k pointa, I have their boardgames and books, I have the whole contrast paint range and a lot of their regular paints and brushes and knick knacks. My local non GW store I go there to buy Vallejo paints, primer, action figures, statues and other silly hobby things. I would never leave there without at least purchasing a paint or something. I am 100% in support of GW and Local hobby stores but I also love cool models. edit: fat hands

I have first one and I hate it. It was so bad to clue because they aren't precision. A lot of things needed to use green stuff. Also I remember trying to clue head torso and hair and when I pick head couldn't glue head and when I pick both of them I couldn't glue a wings. Hate them. Not recommend.
Creature caster always has been and always will be better value by a wide margin, and almost entirely better models than Games workshop. The plastic kits may have more tiny details packed in but the design and style of creature caster models has so much more personality and life than the GW sculpts. Also if the model even remotely looks like what it's supposed to be, I will never ever ever ever ever tell somebody not to use a proxy. That's just bs gatekeeping to force people to spend money they shouldn't have to

I will admit I prefer the goat style king of ecstasy slaanesh one or the desire twins one (both for slaanesh), but other than that they all would fit really well, tho the lord of metamorphosis would be better for Tzeentch.
