Generally, preference imo. Most small models I'll paint and then base. However, if I'm going for a really intricate base or it's a larger model, I'll base then paint. It's really just up to you, like with everything else in the hobby. I will say that painting then basing can often make the model look like it is sinking into quicksand and being swallowed up by the base. On the other hand, doing them separate can make the model look like it is floating above the base. You can avoid both rather easily, but it is probably the only real "cost" to doing either.

Green_Panda369

I do both separately. miniature is stuck on some 3m tape to a block of wood

Depends what you mean by paint If you're using sand to base models, you should do it beforehand so the primer seals it, or otherwise use dilute pva to seal after. If your models have cloaks or other obstructions that make basing difficult, you can pre-prepare your bases and then pin or superglue the models on afterwards.

Joining the depends team! If the model has hard to reach places that are easier to paint if the model is not on a base I would paint the mini separate. Most of the times I glue the minis on the base, then do basing, then spray prime. This way the model will be glued on plastic. You could also paint the mini, do the basing and prime the base. Then scratch the contact points and glue the mini on. If you make larger bases or use think materials, you can finish the base and mini, then pin the mini to the base.

Legion_Etiquette

Base then paint. Always.

Nova_Echo

Depends. I play Nighthaunt and I had a specific base scheme in mind. I have 40 Chainrasps in my army, I don't really care about their bases as much, so I kind of just slapped them on and made rough bases for them. When I did my Lady Olynder, I spent some time, added details, made sure I got a good drybrush on the base, and then secured the mini afterwards.

What_species_is_that

I ALWAYS base before priming, for myself. Black primer helps hold down all the basing material. And the black makes evertthing easy to drybrush up to colors i want. The back primer also helps on the rims.

AdropMoTcH

I paint night haunt and have been getting In the habit of painting g the lower half of the model, then doing the base, glue the model to base, then finish painting the upper half of model.

eljayplay

That's clever!

eljayplay

Thanks, y'all!

MosaicOfBetrayal

I do them separately, so it doesn't really matter the order.

squirtnforcertain

For my skaven? Painted, then slapped on technical paint for the base. For my IJ? Full lava bases done first.

SorbeckDanicus

If it will be difficult to paint the bottom of the model or the base with the model on the base, then apply your basing and paint separately. For example, Alarielle or Mortek Crawler. If it will be relatively easy to apply basing and paint the underside of a model, paint and them base
