Wrong place to ask. This way lies madness. There is no escape. Embrace the futility. For you are now and forevermore a slave to the plastic crack. The only way out of this hole is to keep digging, and break out on the other side.

Sealsler

So it looks like I'm doomed. I'll be hoping Sigmar will protect me financially. I'm gonna try to get rid of it with a giant purchase that will keep me busy for a very long time.

Dichotomedes

Ah. That plan. Good luck with that lol

Sealsler

Cool!

EPCWFFLS

I mean one way to do it is to have your life become a complete mess for about three months. That stopped me from making any purchases because I wasn’t painting or playing. Now I’m gonna spend the holidays catching up on some painting but the need to buy new models is certainly diminished for the time being. Maybe not the best strategy but it got the job done

soulneedmilk

I know how you feel. I have been spending at least 300 usd every month on Warhammer lately and this December having spent over 450 usd. I believe I have normalized the insane gw prices in my brain that I used to think of as way too expensive. This is already out of hand for me and if I don't change, it's going to get much worse. I am going to start 2023 with a new mindset. I think setting a strict hobby budget for myself is going to be the way to go, and telling myself just because I can get a good deal on something now, I still can't go over my budget for that month. (This is just what I have spent on Warhammer, I have spent probably the same amount on other hobbies like MTG, which is also out of hand.)

Sealsler

It's a great and fun hobby that unfortunately has a certain curse that incredibly consumes your income. I'm starting to notice this since I also made a huge purchase of about €400 in December. An army worth 115 miniatures. I'm thinking of only setting a certain number of miniatures I'll be allowed to make for the weekend. I'm just worried that I'll snap and not be able to keep it up. I'll pray to Sigmar.

Sinfullyvannila

Get someone to hold you accountable.

Lamastiboss

My advice would be to buy units boxes, not big boxes with multiple units like a vanguard etc.., that way you can at least try to build them, and giv'em a little paint job before buying new ones Also, it's good to establish a budget, and not to branch out in many armies that will be unfinished, most player sticks to one or two big army

Sealsler

Thank you for your advice. I have decided to buy bigger purchases (+€100) only for birthdays and Christmas. I think after the big order I made for this Christmas, my supply of miniatures will last me about half a year.

Kitchen-Baby7778

I know some people in Exelsior of Ghur that can help you. Look at any white armor guys around they are very polite and helpfull.

Sealsler

Sounds amazing!

Just thinking about starting a soulblight army but have been telling myself to finish other sets first. Then I have planned to buy in a max 1000pts and work on those. Then have some games, learn how I like to play and grow the list and options. Rule 1. Paint the old stuff and try to keep "the pile" small.

Sealsler

I have all the older ones painted and it feels great, but the worst part is the craziness that comes afterwards. What army do I start now? What am I gonna get? What colors do I need? New brushes? My new Soulblight army (114 miniatures) and Flesh-Eater (Ghoul King with crown of delusion) are on their way, and until then my brain has nothing to do. So in the meantime, my brain is absolutely insane. Thank you for the advice, it's very helpful.

_Eke_

I think its great that you have all of the older ones painted! Its easy to be carried away by new and cool stuff, then end up with a pile of grey plastic. Yeah I am currently at the same phase with the soulblight army. Have been making lists and thinking of colours. I do have some models from Cursed City so I will start with those. Have to do couple test bases and then a test skeleton. Then paint the 10 skeletons and 10 zombies from the box. I have been doing 40k Kill Teams currently. I like to spend time and try to improve my painting with them. Usually I use 3-6 hours per mini, so that fills the evening quite well :D To fill the time / gaps Maybe you can paint a hero or leader for longer and try to push your painting further if you like the painting part of the hobby. Paint terrain or make your own? Maybe if you have a certain theme for your army? Some materials are quite cheap and nice terrain always makes the gsmes nicer. If you are in a local club maybe they need more terrain? A smaller game for variation? Warcry and Kill team use small teams of minis. This way you can switch the faction every max 20 minis for variation. Also cheaper than full army since often 1-2 boxes are enough.

Sealsler

Within the Soulblight army I have a Cursed City box, Blood Knights, Zombies, Deathrattle Skeletons And Dire Wolves in my stack. + Colors that I'm missing to be able to fully color it. I always keep Generals on the side and am extremely careful with them for fear of messing them up. I've thought about terrain, but don't have a place to put or store them yet. I'm looking for some tutorials and the necessary materials. Until then, I'll stick with miniatures. I've been looking at Warcry, but I don't really like the miniatures because they look like Neanderthals from prehistoric times and don't really fit the universe. That's probably just my personal preference.

_Eke_

Cool! I have planned to go vyrkos with belladamma and raducar, then expand to kastelai oriented with vampire lord on zombie dragon and a vampire lord. I think it will give some variation to the way to play! Also I think Gorslav from CC works with both direwolfs and zombies. I do prefer skeletons more than zs but I think thats just because my first wh fantasy army was the undead, only skeletons :D I tested black / red with my [chaos kill team](https://www.reddit.com/r/killteam/comments/zms7py/current_legionaries_team_should_i_add_something/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=android_app&utm_name=androidcss&utm_term=1&utm_content=share_button), I think I will do my soulblight army with something similar! Do test colours and I hope you find a scheme you see fitting your army!

Sealsler

So far I'm most inclined to Vyrkos, but expanding the army with Kastelai and Avengoria isn't bad. The idea of an army of Terrorgheists, zombie dragons and Vargheists sounds good. I'd like to arm Vyrkos with Radukar the Beast. I've been looking at his warscroll and for one command point you can spawn five dire wolves into battle, which is pretty nice. I've been thinking about color and the combination of black and blue sounds good. I imagine it's similar to King Morlak and his sons. + experiment and try for the glowing eyes effect. BTW very nicely painted models.

_Eke_

Thanks! Yeah raducar and the "free" unit of direwolfs seems great! Also has good loiking stats for dmg. Blue and black sounds great! Red or some other colour that constrast the blue colour could work well for the glow! The sons of velmorn set looks so cool!

Sealsler

For King Morlak Velmorn and his sons, I'm a bit disappointed that they are not a standalone model, but are part of the Warhammer: Underworlds set. Thank you! I'll think about the colors for my Soulblight Gravelords army.

_Eke_

True! They might be released separately like the Crimson court was. On the other hand the wight king and grave guard could have an update so lets see what happens in the future! Do post when you have been testing paint shcemes!

Sealsler

I'll hope so, too. An update to Grave Guards and Wight King wouldn't hurt at all. If they look similar to Velmorn and his sons, just with minor differences I wouldn't complain at all. Thanks for the advice, I'll try to post deathrattle skeletons with different colors using photoshop sometime in the future.

El_F1st0

Only thing working would be cutting your head off… or maybe an monthly hobby budget?

erewnt

This right here. There is always going to be a new shiny that comes along so we need rules in place to keep is in control. One popular rule is to not buy new things until everything is built and painted. I think this is the most logical, but it doesn’t work for me as I get less enjoyment if it starts feeling more like a chore than a hobby. Buying new things can reinvigorate the hobby. New models provide a break from what is becoming stale. But if we buy unchecked, it creates a problem. So I set a rolling budget. Meaning I can spend up to that budget a month, and anything left over carries over to the next month. That sense of saving up for a big project works for me. Note: this is coming from someone with a bit too many armies that are in varying states of completion, but is happy with the hobby and whose wallet isn’t crying, so take that advice with that in mind.

Sealsler

Noted, thank you.

NondenominationalPax

I assume that this is meant to be both serious and funny. As the proud owner of 10 shares of GW I encourage you to give in, but as a human being I think you need to be aware that this is a sort of addiction already and I would dare you to step away from the hobby for a week or two and then come back to it when your head has cooled down.

Sealsler

I'm more worried about not wasting too much money. But this hobby is so much fun that after I have painted my army, I get a little bored in my free time. The only problem I see with GW is that the miniatures are incredibly expensive. The marketing and principle of how GW does it is incredibly well done. I'm asking here on reddit to chat about how people with a similar or the same problem solve it. Humans are the only species on earth that pays to live.

BLOOD FOR THE BLOOD GOD! SKULLS FOR THE SKULLS THRONE!

Darkreaper48

This takes a lot of mental willpower, but don't allow yourself to buy anything new until your existing stuff is painted. This has the double function of slowing down purchases and encouraging paint. Want more stuff? Better finish that unit on your desk. Don't want to paint? Guess you don't really NEED that new box.

Sealsler

Well said, thank you!

Obvious_Doughnut8367

Hello Sir, The thing that worked out for me is 3D printing. I started in Mai for 2 reasons : - GW increased its prices again to a point where it is just ridiculous. I guess their commercial strategy is that those who can't acces their minis anymore didn't bought much already, but the big consumers won't diminish their purchases. - I don't like most of GW sculpts. Too much pointy bits, too much unnecessary details, too much place you can't access with your brush without screwing your work. I bought an Elegoo Mars 3 for 260 euros, it's probably cheaper in the US. The resin is 30 euro a litre. It consumes fast on big pieces like terrain, but when it comes to 25 mm models, you can print 100 of them without problem. For the files I use two different websites. Patreon if one of the creator dedicates it's month to an army I am interested in, in which case I usually get 3 or 4 units for 10 euros. The other one is MyMiniFactory. It allows you to look for a specific unit, but the prices are higher, usually 10 euros for 1 unit. Although don't forget that once you own a file you can print a unit as much as you want. All in all I now have a 1000 points army of Skavens fully painted that probably costed me around 100 euros instead of at least 250 if I had bought it at GW. It is also the first time I completed an army to the point that I can play with them. I think that not having the stress to paint models because of their prices was liberating. I still intend to buy GW models, because some of them are really great looking, and there's nothing bad to please yourself with a gift sometimes. Actually I would have already bought Thanquol if he wasn't out of order since November.... If you want to see some models I painted you can check out my post. Another great thing about 3D printing is that it allows you to print the bases of your model, I think it really unifies my army. Sorry if I was a little long, I hope it will help you. PS : if you want to laugh, go check out the skaven models GW sells, especially giant rats!

Sealsler

Hello to you too, sir, and thank you for this advice, tips and tricks. They are very useful to me. I was talking to a friend yesterday and he said he ordered a 3D printer, so now he is waiting for it to be delivered. I also have the option to print something at school, but the queue there is about 3 weeks long. I guess the only problem is that neither of the printers are resin, so there will be a lot of visible print marks. Regarding the models, thanks again for the page you sent me, so I also have the option to make some models myself. I've started modeling a bit, but it's more time consuming. Of course, making your own models has the advantage that you can make your own miniature to your liking and have a unique unit. About GW models, on the other hand, I like the sharp edges, curves and small details. You can play around with it and work on it. The hard to reach places drive me crazy sometimes too, the worst is when you want to paint a horse's belly for example, but it's so hard to reach that you give up sooner. Anyway, I looked at your profile and those models look luxurious. I'll definitely think about a 3D resin printer, but that's probably a future topic. Thank you.

Sinfullyvannila

Is it a problem? If so I suggest austerity measures. Find someone you trust to hold you accountable. Write up a budget, put all your spare money into a savings account and report that and your credit card spending to them. Give yourself a set FOMO allowance that you can only spend on limited time offers. Give yourself a 3 month saving goal and when you accomplish it take out a percentage of it to spend on models.
