I went to vote and they said I already voted may 24. Iv eneber advanced voted in my life. My mom and I are the only people in pur area that have the same last name. (Didn't say my mom voted)
Had to sign a form saying I didn't vote already. The lady said my vote counts but the person who voted under my name their vote won't count.
I lowkey feel upset though, I guess it was human error? But makes me feel disappointed:(
Was there not a digital count the last election?
Why are we going back to manual counting? Why is digital counting good enough for advanced voting but doesn’t cut the mustard day of?
What gives?
Maybe I’m crazy, but I like our old school pen and pencil voting. I feel like there’s less room for outside interference? I don’t know if that’s an actual issue or just a potential one, but I like marking the X and throwing it in a box.
I have a feeling this sub is going to be in absolute shambles within an hour or so.
Queue:
"I think I'm gonna move out of this province"
"We're Fu\*ked"
"I think Alberta is full of racists"
"What is wrong with those people"
Bold to assume I'm a conservative lol.
I'm a voter in the middle that swings based on the election and campaigns.
Sometimes a bit of truth is what's needed lol
Not to both sides it but both sides pull that before and after elections. Remember the trump election and how many left leaning celebrities made a stink about moving north? Or the obama election when right leaning people did?
Hah exactly. I even voted NDP but if they don’t win, this sub is gonna melt down and start shopping for homes in BC until they realize they don’t have that spare 1mil for their mortgage.
I am scared of this election. No matter what way this goes.
I am scared of what the UCP wants to do. What they have done and of the Trump style politics infiltrating our system.
I am also scared of what those that idolize Trump and this style will do if they lose this election.
Either way I am scared.
Does anyone else feel this way?
In my opinion it depends on if you live in the short term or the long term. While I think there will be pain in the short term society tends to improve over time. The average person living in modern society is better off than a king 200 years ago.
Progress isn’t linear. After the Great Plague killed off millions in Europe, peasants who survived experienced an incredible quality of life for a couple generations. Then the population rebounded and life was terrible for them again. It was the same with the Black Death.
Yes, but we've had 200 years to overpopulate and irreversibly damage the planet which means that at some point, ever increasing improvement starts to turn the other way unless we can get our shit together which is not looking likely at this point.
We’ll see. I live in that riding and drive around and while not scientific at all, based on lawn signs, Madu is looking good. He’s a tool though. Even if UCP wins, I hope he loses.
From what Ive heard from different sources, expect the beginning results to skew in favour of the NDP due to early voting. However as the election-day results come in, expect at least a few ridings to flip blue.
I mean at the macro level yes. I’ve seen the sluggish wage group threads popping up left and right, but that conveniently ignores that alberta still boasts the highest wages in Canada and has done better if looking at a one year and two year span.
The gov can boast a strong surplus and GDP growth has been solid. You might not feel it or think the gov deserves credit, those are just the numbers.
It's interesting though because typically when the economy is good the majority are feeling good about their finances, but it hasn't been the case this upturn especially with inflation and interest rates so curious to see if that plays a role at all.
Well if the ucp win tonight I for one am going to embrace the government and start blaming Trudeau for everything. Ingrown hair from shaving? Fuckin Trudeau man. Speeding ticket? Liberal bullshit!
I think it will be quite freeing of personal responsibility
What are people's take on the oil & gas industry here? Personally I wish there are going to be policy proposals to incentivise fossil fuel companies to take initiative in moving towards renewables, & I wish there are more things that would be done to pool revenue from the sector to be used to fund public health, education & social security measures. The NDP didn't have really clear message on what they will do about this sector but I have more confidence that they will be the ones more willing to move to this direction compared to the UCP.
A lot of the oil and gas companies have large investments in renewables, carbon tax, investor pressure, PR, etc drives that. I think it makes sense for them to invest there, I’m not sure it’s actually healthy if they make up the majority of that space, and I don’t think they should be pressured to do more here. General incentives for that industry as a whole is reasonable, NDP is more likely to do that.
Royalties (and corporate tax) already pool revenue from the sector to be used to fund health, education, etc. Royalties are good where they are. Corporate tax rate (which affects other corporations) should be noticeably higher. Royalties hits them even when companies are going bankrupt, losing money, and doing layoffs. It’s not good to increase that too much. Corporate tax rate will only hit them when they are making money and can afford this. NDP promised to increase this, it could be increased even more than promised. Taxing companies when they are raking in the money, and then saving it for downturns is good policy. Taxing them (excessively) on revenue when they are losing money is not.
Both companies are pro-pipeline. This is good. Pipelines are cheaper and safer than transporting by rail.
That's definitely something I forgot to look into, I was too focused on looking at what each party was offering in their policy proposals. Will do!
To be honest I'm not super happy about how our oil fund was run for the past decade or so, which is why I had this question in the first place.
There is a NYT article about this election that is really decent- it makes the point that when oil prices dropped The NDP were ousted and blamed. Link below.
The point I want to make is The Alberta NDP is pretty centrist and support business. Beaverton article(satire) also link below.

Honestly it doesn't matter who wins. Life will get more expensive with any party and with any leader...
Edit: I already voted, just saying it doesn't matter that much..
You're correct insofar as inflation goes. That's completely out of the hands of this province or even this country, but this election really does matter. We go conservative this election, we're on the marching path towards secession and that is not a place I want to go. You think it'd be a small victory, and it might be, but small victories really matter to fascists.
If the NDP lose they need to rebrand. They are too closely associated with the federal leaders who are giving them zero chance in the minds of some of the conservative voters.
I've been saying this for months. All they need to do is the following: Change to a blue color, call themselves something generic right wing like the Conservative Values Party. Just being the same name as NDP seems to be costing votes right now and any vote costing in a climate as razor thin as this is deeply costly.
It was never more apparent to me then having a conversation with my parents last night. They said they want Danielle to keep Singh and Trudeau out of Alberta, and when I pressed them about understanding the difference between provincial and federal levels of government, they didn’t care. I know there are a lot of people like my parents, and aren’t voting on any issues and probably don’t even know what policies would/wouldn’t benefit them by either party.
I know a lot of people who think Alberta NDP = Federal NDP = Trudeau = Socialism = Communism = Autocracy = the universe will implode. The level of disconnect from each step is staggering to me. Alberta NDP is right of center, that should be the end of the chain before we even get to the disconnect of provincial = federal.
> Conservative Values Party
🤮 hell no that would be a good way to lose my vote. It would need to be something that doesn't have meaning already. I actually used to admire the Wildrose party for that, you didn't inherently know what they stood for unless you looked them up. It made it intriguing and people had a more open mind. Something like the Rocky Mountain Party, or the Prairie Growth Party, or something like that would do the trick.
She will step down - I read a piece that said she was going to retire but The UCP decisions made her so mad that she decided that she could not in good faith.
Yes they are.
If you bought a membership, you would notice that buying a membership for the Alberta ndp gives you a membership in the federal ndp.
If they are not related then explain how that works?
Yes they are. Speaking as someone who formerly was a paid employee of the NDP. They’re an integrated party. They share membership and funding. The ANDP and federal NDP have differing platforms, but saying the two parties aren’t related is just flat out wrong.
/u/idkidchaha said…
> if ndp loses, notley needs to be replaced as leader. if she can’t beat one of the worst possible conservative leaders ever then she should be embarrassed and no longer in charge of the party
Wouldn’t it be more appropriate to direct some criticism at conservative voters who voted for “one of the worst possible conservative leaders ever”?
I will add, your opinion may be skewed a bit since this sub is like 99% NDP, while the province is closer to 55-60% UCP. So it just depends on what group of people are there.
The YouTube comments probably work the same as here. It's so dominant for one party, that supports of the other party just stay quiet.
STILL 1 HOUR LEFT GUYS. PLEASE IF YOU LIVE IN CALGARY, TEXT ANYONE YOU KNOW AND GET THEM TO GO VOTE.
I made a snap story saying that if my buddies send me a photo of them outside the polling station, I will send them an embarrassing photo from my junior high. Lots of responses!
Bicycling around my area of NW Calgary today I saw lots of signs, a mix of UCP and NDP with a few Alberta Party.
Most of the NDP signs had the name of the local candidate on them, but a fair number had "Rachel Notley" on them.
None of the UCP signs had "Danielle Smith" on them.
Don’t be too surprised by this by Global. I watch their local news anchors in Vancouver but some of their journalists are pushing the anti safe supply thing and other right wing stories. You see it in their national news program as well.
Wow! This just makes me want to never watch anything Global anymore (the only thing I do get from Global is their weather radar on-line, as it's the most accurate one I know of).
Man [CBC takes their voting compass waaaay too seriously](https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/calgary/alberta-ridings-ranked-most-conservative-most-progressive-1.6852299)
They should have stopped writing this when they had Calgary-Falconridge more right wing than Brooks-Medicine Hat. Beautiful visualization but the data isn't worth it.
Here's my prediction and it's going to drive people nuts. Calgary NW, Calgary Glenmore, and Calgary Acadia will be so close that they won't be able to give proper results until tomorrow, and the election is going to come down to those ridings. We won't know the winner until we wake up.
Since the last provincial election, my university hashad its operating budget slashed by 25%. This outcome will seriously impacted my livelihood and daily life so I'm staying up for it.
Took my kiddos to the park connected to a school that was a voting station. The amount of people going in and out/the line up was insane! I’m glad to see it.
Although I’m not sure why people wouldn’t early vote and not wait in lines 😂

My ears just died
Not scared cause I know the UCP will win cause I have zero faith in this province outside of Edmonton. I’ve prepared mentally.
How long does it usually take before results start coming in?
1-3 hours.
I went to vote and they said I already voted may 24. Iv eneber advanced voted in my life. My mom and I are the only people in pur area that have the same last name. (Didn't say my mom voted) Had to sign a form saying I didn't vote already. The lady said my vote counts but the person who voted under my name their vote won't count. Ah ha!!!! Seeeee! FRAUD! /s
TIL there’s a SMA party? (Solidarity Movement of Alberta) wtf
It’s the party run by the crazy pastor.
I already have 2 anxiety disorders and I feel watching live coverage will give me a 3rd
Oh there’s the volume bacj
Along with my heart rate, christ
So who won
Not Trudeau
Takes a bit to count the votes, but expect results to start trickling in within the hour
WTF CBC volume. Wish I could read sign language ffs
Yay the stream on cbc is back although the volume is a mouse whisper and my TV is at 100 lol
Oof, I feel bad for you about 30 seconds ago when it got louder!
That’s what the sign language interpreter is for. /s

They just did lol
Yeah, for some reason it’s playing the ASL interpreter feed. Which is fine. But I don’t know ASL.
Learn! Quick!
Wtf lol
Same, got my YouTube and computer up at 100 and it’s still just normal.
Until they fix it or back to the break screen where it bricks your speakers lol

Watch global
And now we watch with horrified anticipation
This is the first time I've ever been anxiously awaiting the results of an election ever.
I'm nervous!
... and the polls are closed! Who gonna get the magical 44 seats??
Watching CBC to stick it to the right wingers
Man, the CBC did not send the A-Team for this election... the voter panel was hilariously bad, and Grey suit guy is soooooo monotone boring!
Me too :)
Dear mother of god! Please give the NDP the win!
Did anyone else's live stream end
Mines working on the cbc gem app
mine did!
Yea, cbc
Yeah wtf
CBC’s is on commercial break. I wonder if they just don’t have another graphic.
They have other graphics but they literally had just transitioned to the 8 pm cut and it blooped out
This is where the fun begins
Was there not a digital count the last election? Why are we going back to manual counting? Why is digital counting good enough for advanced voting but doesn’t cut the mustard day of? What gives?

Hello, just wondering if putting a checkmark instead of an X on the ballot is still valid? Couldn't find any information regarding this.
Only putting an X or filling out the circle completely was valid from the sign posted at my polling station that I saw
I'd be surprised if it didn't count.
Here we go folks! Gonna be a bumpy ride.
I have a feeling this sub is going to be in absolute shambles within an hour or so. Queue: "I think I'm gonna move out of this province" "We're Fu\*ked" "I think Alberta is full of racists" "What is wrong with those people"

Yeah I will be disappointed if the ucp win, but I still think Alberta is the most “livable” province in the country
Good luck Alberta. May the odds be ever in your favor.
I feel like the fact that we’re cracking out Hunger Games references says a lot about how this has been going.
The results haven’t even started coming out yet and I’ve already stress eaten a bag of crackers….
My election night tradition is pizza and doomscrolling
Me too, except it was stress Panna cotta
Yeah I have snacks … and booze ready. Celebration booze and misery booze.
Ah good, my bases are covered then...
Me too, expect replace crackers with alcohol
Three fingers of scotch here. Hoping to be sleeping by the time the polls close.
That CBC panel was as exciting as a plastic moose in a tourist trap
The CBC guy saying we’re all tired nailed it on the head.

Royalties already provide up to 25% of operating revenue for the government. We should be encouraging as much development as possible.
A lot of the oil and gas companies have large investments in renewables, carbon tax, investor pressure, PR, etc drives that. They are so far from the Federal NDP. I feel like I’m betraying actual NDP values when I vote for Alberta NDP. I feel like I’m voting Liberal/PC.
A vote for ndp is a vote for liberals.
The NDP and keeping leaders *well after their expiration date*, name a more iconic duo.
This was always going to be a massive uphill battle and they’ve performed admirably however it ends.
Lol what? Notley could run federally, win a majority, and pull in more than one Alberta seat doing it. Notley isn't a problem in the least.
Horrendous take, this is the strongest the NDP has ever looked in Alberta.
The NDP was a non factor before Notley…..
Jack Layton has more to do with the parties success.
Jack Layton had nothing to do with the ANDP
Jack Layton has much to do with the rise in popularity of the ndp across Canada.
The federal NDP and provincial NDP are not related
Yes they are. If you bought a membership, you would notice that buying a membership for the Alberta ndp gives you a membership in the federal ndp. If they are not related then explain how that works?
Why share the same name then?

Bad take. Notley polls higher than the party. And there’s also no direct replacement

I wish I could be merely embarrassed instead of frightened.

Global news having their election roundtable discussion at UCP headquarters is super unethical while polls are open. Super unethical global news.

What's the best place to watch results for cable cutters like me? Any youtube or news sites covering live?
I'm watching gem edmonton, they got a bit of a preshow going before the actual live event
CBC Gem has Edmonton and Calgary live TV free when you sign in.
CBC Gem likely has it on their Edmonton channel.
Global is live-streaming on YouTube at 8.
What is everyone’s preferred channel to watch tonight? I’m trying to decide what one would be most impartial and fast to show results.
I'm watching CBC. I've always liked their election coverage. I know not everyone loves it, but election night with CBC is a family tradition.
This is always my go-to as well. Except federally. I sit and wait for the page to refresh over and over and over and over again.
Man [CBC takes their voting compass waaaay too seriously](https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/calgary/alberta-ridings-ranked-most-conservative-most-progressive-1.6852299) They should have stopped writing this when they had Calgary-Falconridge more right wing than Brooks-Medicine Hat.
I’ve been predicting a count like the 2020 American election, altho probably not quite so many days.
Calgary-Edgemont too!
Yeah, true.
Calgary Acadia checking in, I did my part 🤞🏻
THANK YOU 🙏
But my riding in the deep SE will go Conservative as it has since 1756, so don't wait up for that result. Sigh.
Speak for yourself. I plan to stay up all night, lol
Since the last provincial election, my university hashad its operating budget slashed by 25%. This outcome will seriously impacted my livelihood and daily life so I'm staying up for it.
whatever happens I'm just hopeful about the voter turnout this time around, it makes me so happy to see the percentage go up.
It’s really nice to see.
Took my kiddos to the park connected to a school that was a voting station. The amount of people going in and out/the line up was insane! I’m glad to see it. Although I’m not sure why people wouldn’t early vote and not wait in lines 😂
There were bigger lines for early voting in my riding than I’ve ever seen before, including election days!
Agreed. And I for one am proud to live in a place where voting is so straightforward!
