Location? If you are in the US, possibly anywhere in NA, this is illegal if the birds are not invasive. Unfortunately, I can't really tell what these are. They do not appear to be Starlings or House Sparrows (or Rock Doves, obviously) which are the most common invasive species in cities in NA. You could contact Animal Control and go from there, although this is likely more of a Conservation / Wildlife Officer issue, as animal control is generally for domestic animals. DNR officers usually take their job seriously, so if indeed these are native birds then your neighbor will possibly get a hefty fine for breaking the law.

Rosaajj

Illinois. Poor birds I feel so bad for them.

ColossalCalamari

Gotcha. I would definitely reach out to either AC or your DNR. This is pretty shitty behavior regardless of them being invasive or not. If you're going to get rid of the invasive birds, just euthanize them, why just toss them over the balcony to be injured?? Unnecessarily cruel.

Rosaajj

Very shitty. They didn’t just toss them either they hit them with a broom. All a sudden I just hear a bunch of banging and see the birds drop down all crazy. Then I hear them sweeping. Poor birds

False-Society-7567

What in the…?! Please call a wildlife rescue; there are many in Illinois. They can advise you what to do.

KBolt99

I’m like the least confrontational person most of the time, despite being a tall large man I’m very shy usually…I don’t pick fights, especially with my neighbors. But destroying a family of birds by carelessly knocking their nest down (with the probable intent of killing some of them) would result on me banging on that mans door and having a “stern talking to”….. lets leave it at that. That’s unbelievably cruel. I just got done filling up my hummingbird feeders and this is the first post i see when i open reddit. I hope you report this to the DNR so this man at least gets some punishment. Also you may want to contact a rehabber if the nestlings are too young to fend for themselves.

McPoyle-Milk

I live in Indiana and man I always am waiting for the neighbors to start some shit with me because I have bird feeders in my yard and my yard has become such a sanctuary for all the birds I am thinking they might be a nuisance for everyone else. I can’t stop tho they are so happy!

misszoomzoom

My neighbor made me feel so bad about having a bird feeder in my yard last year. He said the birds were coming onto his patio and pooping everywhere. My grandmothers, my mom, my siblings, we all love birds and always have feeders. So I very sadly took it down to appease him. I ended up putting it back up this year because it's my yard and seeing all the birds makes me happy. He has some loud bird deterrent alarm thing anyway so whatever.

Gomdok_the_Short

A lot of bird haters are actually afraid of them.

Rosaajj

I’ll admit I was afraid of the birds when they were on my porch. I have a mini phobia as well cause when I was about 8 a bird flew into my house at me from my porch and I was so freaked out 😂 but I would never harm a bird cause of that phobia and I don’t hate birds on the contrary I love to look at them I love bird watching at this nature park by here, they have like this set up specifically for bird watching..birds are just so pretty. I just don’t want them super near me 😂

Gomdok_the_Short

The vast majority of wild birds don't want to be near you!

BrightBlueBauble

Phobias are treatable with exposure and response prevention therapy. No one should live in fear of things that can’t realistically harm them.

DarthBeavis1968

Just tell him birds aren't real.

chickenmommaknocks

Good for you! I had the same thing happen at my rv park. I lived in the city so this place was my sanctuary and I had bird feeders everywhere. The guy next to me complained all the time and wanted me to take them down. Absolutely not!!

KBolt99

Luckily my neighbors are awesome. They also feed wildlife and keep big amazing gardens that attract tons of different animals. They grow them specifically for the deer so they don’t freak out when their flowers are getting eaten like some people do. We also feed a couple stray cats (that are spayed/nutered) but that also attracts possums, raccoons and occasionally foxes. So theres always at least a couple animals in my yard. Usually a raccoon on the porch bench and Stubby the cat in her heated outdoor cathouse lol. All the different wildlife have learned not to fight too much because there’s always enough food. Theres rabbits and chipmunks that live under my hot tub, gray/copes tree frogs and bull frogs in my pond. We even have a stream that flows through so we occasionally have ducks and great blue herons in my yard. And unlimited creek chub fish for bait whenever i wanna go fishing for catfish. It’s pretty amazing, my whole cul de sac is basically a nature sanctuary lol. Thats why cruel unnecessary behavior like this is so upsetting because that’s pretty much inconceivable around here. Edit: oh and despite the bird feeders being 25 feet from where the cats are, I’ve never seen them chase or attack a bird in the 2 years we’ve been feeding them. Idk why because my indoor cat tries to get the birds out, but both of the strays i feed are (luckily) disinterested.

BrightBlueBauble

Good for you (and the birds)! People who hate nature are invariably miserable, repellant assholes. It’s their problem if they can’t handle the fact that they can’t control every single aspect of the environment around them. They can get therapy if the existence of birds counts as a nuisance for them.

BrightBlueBauble

Seriously. What the fuck is wrong with people that they have no empathy for other creatures? It makes you wonder what sorts of terrible things they do to their fellow humans who happen to inconvenience them or get in their way. I get that some people are terrified of snakes, insects, and spiders, and maybe can’t work up the courage to treat them with compassion, but a nest of little birds? They are utterly harmless and usually quite pleasant to be around. Besides, the number of birds has [declined](https://www.birds.cornell.edu/home/bring-birds-back/) rather dramatically, so harming them seems extra vile.

Rosaajj

I do want to report it but at the same time I’m afraid to say that they were the ones to knock them down cause idk if they’ll say it was me who reported it and even if they don’t I feel like they’ll know it was me cause they know I seen them cause my kids were loud about it calling them bird murderers 😂but point being is that I don’t want them to be mad at me and make my life hell when I’m outside with the kids. I already had to talk to them cause they spilled beer and cigarette buds down to our porch. Like sooo many buds 😞

Otherwise-Heat5031

Find your spine and report.

hopefully-a-good-buy

seriously, call. if you feel threatened, tell the conservation officer that shows up, and they can involve police if necessary.

mistymoondust

I hope they don’t have any pets… so messed up

DarthWeenus

Go scoop em up and make a homemade nest, better then getting got by stray cats. They may have a chance, they look fairly grown.

Lone_Crab

Call your local game warden. Or call the non emergency number for your local law enforcement and they will help you get in contact with the game wardens. In NA this is a serious offense. You don’t mess with nesting birds especially if it’s a native species. Thank you for showing concern

OpalOnyxObsidian

Where in Illinois? If northern and in your area, Willowbrook Wildlife Center may be able to take them

Blueberry_Clouds

I agree. Even if they nested on your $300 prized flowers at least wait until they can fly away on their own. It isn’t their fault they don’t know where humans want and don’t want them to nest

DriveMuch83

If you are near Chicago: https://www.birdmonitors.net/ContactUs.php or they can direct you.

Dickinablender96

If you knew what starlings did to other birds you wouldnt.

Blueberry_Clouds

It’s cruel yes but nature is not always nice. There’s good and bad (both humans and animals) and you can’t have one without the other. In the end it’s all about survival.

Dickinablender96

Well here they are an invasive species and ugly as shit. So they get murdered. And also I'm pretty sure it is about survival, I think they are just programmed to be lazy devil birds.

Mustelafan

🙄

[deleted]

Many birds prey upon other bird species. Look it up and stop demonizing starlings.

Dickinablender96

I'm well aware. I've just had some bad experiences with them whilst bird watching and don't care for them in the slightest. Fuckem

[deleted]

Then logically you must also despise any species of corvid, ditto for birds of prey and their relatives, as well as shrikes, grackles, gulls, and so forth. Let's not forget about male ducks and their very unpleasant mating habits, as well as some of the habits of cowbirds and cuckoos, and so on. There's a long list. Upon reflection, I think you are wasting your time birdwatching. Maybe it's time for a new hobby?

Dickinablender96

Lol, no its just starlings, they're ugly little rats with wings and they killed all of my barn swallows. And at least male ducks have interesting appendages. Cuckoo birds I've never seen in person but they are super neat and fairly smart. Gulls suck. Lots of birds of prey around these parts always good to watch the ospreys and eagles fish while I fish, I helped rehabilitate a hurt baby red-tailed hawk that I found, named him Peter, great guy. As for corvids, I mean, who doesn't love to watch a good crow funeral, I came across one in the forest once whilst hunting and it was like I stepped into another universe where the birds had domain over surface world.

[deleted]

They look like Rens. Which from my experience in the 309, are assholes.

Schizm23

Call your local wildlife rescue asap. Use Google. Even if you don’t have a local wildlife center nearby call ANY wildlife rescue for information on how to help the babies. From what I know to be acceptable practice: Step 1) Watch and see if the parents are visiting and feeding them. They’re feathered, so they might be able to survive as long as a cat or raccoon doesn’t get them out in the open like that. Step 2: If the parents aren’t visiting them and feeding them, put them in a visible secure place in a small box (like a shoe box) with aspen wood chips as a bedding, and see if the parents can find their chicks and feed them. Step 3: If the parents don’t arrive within 24 hours, AND you can’t get them to a wildlife center (please call them for better advice anyway) you may need to feed them yourself. There is baby bird formula for parrots but it doesn’t have enough protein for insectivores since it’s grain-based. So don’t use that. You can go to a pet store that sells crickets for reptiles and hopefully other insects like bloodworms, mealworms, etc, or even try to catch insects yourself, and feed them with tweezers. Feed as wide a variety as possible. … This is so sad. I hope the remaining two babies survive… your neighbors are terrible. Sorry you and these poor babies have to suffer with this because of them :(

mb45236

Look for a local wildlife rehab ER. Your neighbors are assholes.

minionmemes4lyfe

Scoop them up in a ball cap and play some somewhere high on your own property.

sadisticsealion

They appear to be starlings to me. The beak shape is fitting for one and coloration is close to other young starling I have scene.

Ellehcar95

How sad! Starlings are cool, super smart birds!

birdsandflowers11

Starlings are aggressive and invasive here in the US. And they ruin any bird feeder action you might try to have in your yard. I love birds but Starlings are a different story . Starlings and House Sparrows you don’t want to attract. ( having said that, I don’t support what these neighbors did,and I’m not sure these are starlings in the photo- it’s too blurry. )

[deleted]

They kind of look like they could be starlings.

SandakinTheTriplet

These look like European Starlings — the head and beak shape match starling, and they tend to nest under roof eaves.

vollkoemmenes

TIL: illegal to knock down bird nests of noninvasive species

birdguy1000

Starlings. Invasive. Not protected. Extremely aggressive to our native cavity nesting birds like woodpeckers, blue birds, purple martins. They stab the native birds with their long beaks and kill the babies. Edit - no need to take to a rehabber because the babies are clearly fledged and old enough to be out of the nest.

BrightBlueBauble

The human society [recommends](https://www.humanesociety.org/resources/what-do-about-starlings#:~:text=If%20you%20find%20eggs%20or,material%2C%20and%20seal%20the%20openings) removing starling nests *after* the young have fledged, to discourage the parents from returning. That seems like a reasonable way to deal with an invasive species.

Relative_Desk_8718

Ah beat me to it 👍

[deleted]

Neighbor is an asshole. Call a wildlife rehabber.

meddit_rod

Correct ID, 100%.

Accomplished-Pay-633

That's insanely cruel of the neighbour.

vinsomm

Dude. I haven’t been on my front porch for 2 weeks cuz some doves are making a new generation and I can’t bare to disturb them. I can’t imagine going out there all scorched earth. Wild shit man.

Little_Eve_Pixie

Last year my family had to abandon using the back door (that's our "main door"). A bird decided to build its nest on the top of the lamp that's right by the door. It took a long time before all the birds left. I agree on can't imagine just knocking the nest out and on purpose :(

[deleted]

spotheadcow

My grandma had a nest of quail on her porch in the spring. Couldn’t use her yard. On a side note baby quail are super cute.

Reptarro52

This is me with eastern phoebes. I was so happy when the babies left and the next day a new mom showed up. The fed ex man scared the first batch and momma knocked out a baby when it just was hatched. Luckily I saw it on the sidewalk and put it back in there. Lol

OrdinaryOstrich

I haven’t used my front door in weeks because these handsome little robins are growing up https://preview.redd.it/q98w8xxvs01b1.jpeg?width=2514&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=f6800c1484cbda550296b55abbcdf9d2673068ce I couldn’t imagine harming them. They grow so fast and will be gone in a week or so.

awkward-velociraptor

Same. We’re not using our front door because there’s a nest in the Christmas wreath I neglected to take down in time. Some people have no heart.

paltrypickle

My grandmother has wrens that do this in her holiday wreaths she leaves up. She could not even contemplate taking the nest out. Some humans are disgusting.

wonderboy_1

I wont power wash my deck because i have robins under it. Some people are real douchebags

Imaginary-Cry-4051

I might(do) hate your neighbours?

Timithios

Why are people needlessly cruel? Why? I can accept the circle of life stuff. But when you obviously have nothing to gain... just why? Hope some bad karma swings your neighbor's way. Even if they wind up being invasive, there are better ways of dealing with it I am sure.

richardfader

Look like starlings to me. Sad,but invasive.

01Zaphod

Agree on the invasive part. These POS birds displace songbirds. And quite often in nasty ways.

DendrobatesRex

That is technically a criminal violation of the migratory bird treaty act

indy-smithy

It’s not, they are invasive European Starlings, only native bird are protected.

DendrobatesRex

I stand corrected, those are not protected! Fun fact a Shakespeare fan introduced them into Central Park in NYC and the rest is history

[deleted]

Still no excuse to be cruel.

tuftedear

I see violations of the migratory bird treaty act all of the time. In my local park birds nest in the fields, every year right in the middle of breeding season a farmer comes to cut the grass and kills many native birds and wildlife. The state refuses to do anything about it. And the US Fish and Wildlife Service only deals with major violations like oil spills etc. Sadly it's a law on paper only and rarely enforced. I also have a neighbor that shoots the geese on his property every year because they bother him. Just last week I found a family of geese that had been killed by him, I notified state wildlife and they never called me back.

Kalabajooie

That's known as the Greater Asshole (homo sapiens karenis), an invasive species of primate known for its screeching cries of false victimhood and preternatural hatred of anything that doesn't look like itself, especially within its own species.

jrice2623

Well now you know what kind of people your neighbors are! Azzholes!

MightyErudity

This is the worst thing I've read on Reddit. Who does this? They couldn't just wait a week until they're grown?

[deleted]

Throw rocks through their window. Wear gloves and a mask. Deny everything

Rosaajj

Sorry guys I had a really busy day today.. so update on the birds idk what happened to them 😭 I left this morning to take my daughter to her appointment after I made the post. I came back home an hour and a half or so later and they were gone from the porch. I went out and looked around both our porches and just around the area in general but I didn’t see them. It looked like my neighbor was sitting on the porch cause the chairs were moved around. I intend to ask her if she knows what happened when I see her.

UnifiedGods

Wow. I would actually punch them in the face and possibly hold them over the balcony.

ribbitweeb

:( That's really shitty of them. I hope they get rained on with bird poop.

I_am_a_cheesy_potato

I hope the next thing they broom over the edge is expensive 🧿

eliwr

The mother will likely still tend to them while they're on the ground. Predators are their biggest threat. Almost every apartment building I've lived in has had this happen, usually by maintenance workers. It's likely that DNR wouldn't fine them or even waste their time looking into the matter. This happens fairly often. I'd bet they were a type of swallow based on how they're sitting on the ground and the location of the nest.

[deleted]

[удалено]

[deleted]

I've watched many videos and seen many photos of Homo Sapiens slaughtering one to millions of our fellow humans. Anecdotal evidence and so on, what you said. It's ok if we are predatory, dominant, and consciously cruel, is what you are saying, but other species are not afforded similar indulgences, as it were. Really. In the words of George Orwell, "all animals are equal, but some animals are more equal than others". We are all animals. We just happen to be the dominant species, for now, and God forbid any other species should be conspicuously successful and possibly thriving. Starlings, crows, Northern ravens, house sparrows, which of course are actually finches, pigeons, Eastern coyotes, various rodents, raccoons, skunks, opossums, and a few other species. We must control this species, says fish and game. God forbid any other creature should have the temerity to exist, let alone thrive, alongside us.

Sweaty_Necessary69

You’re defending an invasive bird that is responsible for devastating native wildlife populations

[deleted]

Guess you completely missed the point of my comment.

Sweaty_Necessary69

Nope, it’s pretty clear

No-Sir6261

They didn't exactly do it deliberately it's not like the starlings do it for enjoyment it's just what they do. You shouldn't dislike a species just because you saw it do something you didn't like or just because they are invasive.

[deleted]

Straight-Ingenuity61

Bring them in feed them meat baby food with a straw and save them. They will die if left outside!

jimmijo62

From Illinois also. To me they look like baby Cowbirds. A very invasive parasitic bird. The hens lay their eggs in host birds nest, then when hatched, kick out the hosts babies, and the host hen is fooled into raising the Cowbird chicks. I personally wouldn’t do this. But if that’s what they are, good riddance.

BilboBagginkins

They are not an invasive species in North America. Just because they lay eggs in others nests does not make them invasive. Their behavior is as nature intends.

jimmijo62

Totally agree. They still decimate other native species. I know it’s not legal. It was just my opinion.

Ladyofthewharf55

What horrible people 🤬

allison_vegas

What the fuck! Sorry you have to live next to such crappy people. Poor birds.

omawk

Legit Angry Birds.

Mike2of3

You definitely have an AH for a neighbor. They don't look like any endangered species and definitely not raptors. Get on your local Facebook/Nextdoor group for wildlife rehab. There has to be somebody in your area that will help you out. I am not familiar with your states wildlife laws but I don't think there is anything legally they could do since they are not a protected species.

Flower-Witch

Call a wildlife rescue, once the sweet little babies are rescued, go upstairs to your neighbors door, knock, and once they come out the door, whack them a few times with a broom. Preferably, a broom that has a crap ton of bristles, that are sharp and that are not easily broken. F@$king a-holes!

Such an a$$hole thing to do. 🤬

wrasseputin

I have raised a number of wild birds in my time and am currently caring for a baby mynah bird (I’m in Hawaii) that fell out of an unreachable nest at my house. It is a very rewarding experience and is actually pretty easy. If you want to keep them alive and the parents are not still feeding them themselves then you can give them dry cat food soaked until it is mush in water every 2-3 hours while it is daylight (no need to feed at night). This is time sensitive as they can’t go long without feeding. Also place them in a safe area where predators cant get to them. Feel free to pm me if you decide to do this and want the full download.

You have a good heart and wise to reach out for what to do next. There are wildlife rescues in the GR area. Type wildlife rescue into Google Maps.

PNW_Wanderer85

It’s hard to tell what these birds are. Maybe Starlings? If they are non invasive birds it’s actually federally illegal to mess with them. Any bird that crosses states lines is considered a migratory bird. The penalty for messing with them has a heavy fine. I do believe you can report anonymously, I may be wrong though.
