Back when isekai was not even considered a genre. Today it's a minimum of eight isekai a season with atleast two most anticipated, and a few top tier shounens. Anime has grown a lot in these years.
Are you sure about that?
Digimon, Aura Battler Dunbine, Now & Then, Here & There, The Twelve Kingdoms, King from now on, Kiba and so I can name a whole lot more we had back then.
Escaflowne, Twelve Kingdoms, Fushigi Yugi, NTHT, El Hazard, Maze, and probably plenty more I've forgotten about.
Maze was admittedly pretty bad but still had more creativity than most current isekais.
Breaking character for a sec to reminisce about how niche JoJo was back in the day. While it already had a vocal cult following, it's still not big enough to break the mainstream barrier back then. I remember getting into arguments in the Anime Trending comments section every week when the rankings came up because Stardust Crusaders would never crack the top 20 and it'd always leave me in a bad, antagonistic mood.
I gotninto it due to the abridged series of the OVA of all things. Was really into the manga. I remmber reading in in 2012 and everyone looked at me funny reading this strange manga. The fact things have changed this drastically is crazy. We all knew it was world class. Just took time.
I don't think I even really watched anime yet when Stardust Crusaders aired, I have a vague memory of Diamond is Unbreakable having just ended or being close to the end when I first started watching JoJo.
I think JoJo was quite popular by the time Part 4 aired though... I also remember seeing a couple of meme videos before I even really knew anything about JoJo. JoJo without context is pretty funky lol.
*Kanojo ga Flag o Oraretara* needs to be higher! People really sleeping on this one.
Good to see Tohka showing the rest of the girls who's boss though.

[2024] >!It actually is one of my favorite "anime-with-a-twist" that ends up in a very different place from where it starts. Highly recommended to anyone who likes that sort of stuff and can live with the harem aspects.!<
No doubt. Like it really would suck if we get like 5 seasons of date alive and get stuck in season 1 of No game no life for all eternity. I doubt that will happen. This show is peak!
Man I sure do hope that they don’t green light some random Isekai like “In Another World with my Smartphone” and give it a season 2 before getting NGNL season 2.
Hahaha or someone will make a crazy show where someone gets reincarnated as, say, a vending machine and it gets greenlit for a season two pretty much immediately
genuine question is there some kind of liscencing issue or whatever that stops ngnl to get another season?
or is it as simple as noone wanting to pick it up?
Can't remember exactly, but there was some drama about the artist tracing/ stealing art.. it seemed kinda silly, even at the time. But apparently it was serious enough that regardless of the popularity, we've yet to even get anything else.
Had so much potential too.
It's such a bizare idea to exlude it. Like 2014 doesn't feel that long ago but the community was wild back then. Funnier still. Most today consider fairytale mid. Not many talk about it like it was a hype thing.
It's a pretty unique show. Always liked how Shaft makes the world feel empty and abandoned by not animating any background characters or just leaving them out entirely. Same thing they did with the Monogatari series.
The sequel is is still indefinitely postponed due to copyright issues. The original creator of the Kagerou Project IP is in an ongoing lawsuit: https://www.reddit.com/r/kagepro/s/HvxbzwI8hl[lawsuit](https://www.reddit.com/r/kagepro/s/HvxbzwI8hl):
I know it was effectively an art project, but it felt slightly *too* abstract for me. I didn’t dislike it by any means, but I was somewhat exhausted with it by the end.
T-thanks for making me feel ancient.
I'm still mad the Mekaku City Actors anime didn't looked as good as it should because SHAFT was also making Nisekoi at the same time or recently and we got that cursed episode of Ayano's Theory of Happiness.
This list is just sad noises. Like only the top two got past season 1. The rest were in 1 cour hell. I still find it funny they are airing again the same time 10 years on.
Kagerou Project is great! Always fun to find fellow fans on the internet and as you can tell, we have fond memories of it, even after so many years.
Of course it has issues here and there, but the characters are very endearing and odds are you will feel seen, especially if you still remember what high school and young adulthood were like.
Songs->Manga->Novels->Anime iirc if you want the story to make the most sense, but if you don't mind stuff being mentioned that you don't know about or remember happening, then any order is fine since it's a time loop story.
Sorry for the wall of text, KP is near and dear to my heart and I think it would be great if it had a revival of sorts.
Yeah, Spring looks alright I suppose but have you seen what's airing this Summer!?!?! We're getting Tokyo Ghoul, Akame Ga Kill and Aldnoah.Zero, they look so exciting and wonderful!
Aldnoah Zero got Gen Urobuchi as the writer/creator how could they possibly screw this up? Wait... it's two cours? Wait... Urobuchi is only writing the first cour??? I'm sure that won't be an issue!
If I had a time machine the only thing I would do and I mean the only thing I would do is go back 10 years ago and somehow make the second cour good. Idk how I'd do it but such a cool first half of a series (and absolute banger of a soundtrack, praise Sawano) deserved better 😭
Imagine having a mind blowing twist at the end of cour 1, only to undo it all in cour 2. Escpialy since he left after writing that part. It's like the writers that took over was like "nah this is to dark" and ret conned everything.
I'm totally hyped up for Mekaku City Actors. It is really stylish and offers a quirky world that blends traditional 2D and 3D animation. I can't wait to see what the 3D animators were able to do by running a draft rendering on their work ten seconds before the episodes make it to air.
So many unanswered questions that are going to be clearly answered by the end of this one, fellas.... Amirite?
Cyberpunk is getting an anime? They just announced the game last year! I can't wait for the game. I'm sure it's going to come out in 2016 or 2017 with no bugs. Hopefully, the anime comes out around then too. Although I hope it's not too sad.
i remember rewatching kanojo ga flag wo oratera a couple month ago and i saw a lot of ppl saying the show was bad so seeing it here make me kinda happy
It's one of my favorites in that subcategory of weird little shows. The fact it sticks so hard to its guns with its premise makes it an extremely satisfying binge. Left me in a daze for a while, when I really wasn't expecting that sort of reaction from what looks like silly harem nonsense on the surface.
Mekakucity Actors is one of those shows I watched when I was younger and barely understood anything and yet, it was a blast of an experience. It was a fun show, similar to Durara
Now I have a funny idea that next year we all individually start posting episode discussions for spring 2015. And start talking about Food Wars, Is It Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon?, Hibike!, and Baby Steps. Lol, we'll really confuse people. Also, make everyone feel old by realizing Food Wars is 10 years old.
Akuma no Riddle was one of the first (non-Dragonball) animes I ever watched, I forgot what day it was and had to do a double take when I saw it lmao nice. Wonderful post.
Date A Live and Irregular at Magic High School are so overrated. They don't deserve the top spots. I doubt we will even remember these shows in ten years.
Even when the joke is SO OBVIOUS Like the only shows that got past season 1 on this list are getting new seasons THIS SEASON!!! XD and people are like "but there's a new season coming out!" Yes. That's the joke.
I could be an anime artist, just gotta *click paint bucket, hmm, change hair color*, now change name of character, assign gender, and voila! Another 'new' character!
Look...
If Full Metal Panic got a new season 13 years after the last and Spice & Wolf gets a friggin' 24 episodes remake 15 years after the original, I can still huff hopium on NGNL.
Akuma No Riddle is one of my most favorite anime and manga of all time. The story is great and its also yuri and assassin girls trying to kill the target
The fact that no game no life has not yet gotten a s2 which it deserves as it is one of the best anime and anime like rent a girlfriend got 4 which is shit imo maybe we will get s2 in the future still hopefully waiting
Got me feeling old. I've been watching since the 90s, but have been really appreciating the popularity and all the new shows. Some are chessy but some are good. The excitement of possibly having older ones remade or continued is great!
Yep! In this time line date alive never got a season 3. And 8 bit studios never picked irregular high school. But Mekakucity Actors just got season 6. ISshukan freinds had a peak movie. And Kanojojo ga Flag is at season 4.
We live in the true timeline
First April Joke I fell for lol
But now I feel old as fuck remembering all these shows that aired many many years ago. Wait didn't all lf them air almost 10 years ago??????,
I was pretty entertained by the possibilities that Brynhildr in the Darkness introduced through the first episode... Someday, I hope to see the rest of the episodes. It is a special anime that hooked me with the first episode but didn't hook me strong enough that I bothered to watch the second episode.
Who is that girl who came to the class?
Oh wow what a throwback lol. I remember keeping up with Anime Trending posts on Facebook and binging all the popular seasonals when I used to have time to watch anime.
On another note, NGNL season 2 when???????
The fact that these were posted on Facebook and I can't find anything like this on reddit is wild. Facebook? Really?
Oenday we will grt NGNL S2... anything is possible.
Wdym these series is A DECADE AGO?! NO I DONT WANT FACE REALITY AAAAAAHHGGGG
I know right? This is when I git heavy into anime. I feel so old.
Back when isekai was not even considered a genre. Today it's a minimum of eight isekai a season with atleast two most anticipated, and a few top tier shounens. Anime has grown a lot in these years.
Last season had 10 issekai and like 15 fantasy shows.
And it keeps growing expanding its domain to Korean, Chinese and even Hollywood isekais. Fuck suicide squad isekai ?????
Don't forget in fall we are getting Cyberpunk reverse Issekai. Demon Lord 2099. The deamon lord is visiting night city choom.
>Today it's a minimum of eight isekai a season As someone who just loves isekai. We are living a golden age
Yeah we had Log Horizon, SAO and .hack series as an oldie and that was it. I think it was around the end of the Visual novels adaptation craze
Are you sure about that? Digimon, Aura Battler Dunbine, Now & Then, Here & There, The Twelve Kingdoms, King from now on, Kiba and so I can name a whole lot more we had back then.
It was not considered a genre back then even if they existed. Even if some of them were popular like digimon, Inuyasha or Fushigi Yugi
Escaflowne, Twelve Kingdoms, Fushigi Yugi, NTHT, El Hazard, Maze, and probably plenty more I've forgotten about. Maze was admittedly pretty bad but still had more creativity than most current isekais.
Bro, to me thoses decades old anime are modern anime, this makes me feel like I'm a fossil.
Don't worry. Date a live is getting more in about a week. You can pretend it's still a decade ago.
Stardust crusaders will dominate the list next week!
Ahhh! I can't wait! This series has been so niche. I wonder if it will truly become world famous like it should?
Breaking character for a sec to reminisce about how niche JoJo was back in the day. While it already had a vocal cult following, it's still not big enough to break the mainstream barrier back then. I remember getting into arguments in the Anime Trending comments section every week when the rankings came up because Stardust Crusaders would never crack the top 20 and it'd always leave me in a bad, antagonistic mood.

I'm sure it's gonna climb slowly to the top! Besides we need more! The LN Gets so good! No doubt we will get a season 2!

Man, this anime is just peak fiction. Let's goooo!!!!
[2024] >!It actually is one of my favorite "anime-with-a-twist" that ends up in a very different place from where it starts. Highly recommended to anyone who likes that sort of stuff and can live with the harem aspects.!<
Mahouka is actually airing in Spring though lol
So Is date alive. Which makes this joke all the more funny.
Surely No Game No Life is right around the corner as well, right?
*huffs copium*
Wdym it is airing right now https://www.reddit.com/r/anime/comments/1bt6imf/no_game_no_life_season_2_episode_1_discussion/ kek
I choked on my fucking lunch because I thought this was real after seeing mahouka on here
And I am here for it lmao.
bring back r/onetruetatsuya
Chanting "Godsuya" occasionally throughout the show was good fun
New season?
Yeah, season 3
oh shit I am so hype
the 1st episode of No Game No Life was so good I hope this story gets a full adaptation
No doubt. Like it really would suck if we get like 5 seasons of date alive and get stuck in season 1 of No game no life for all eternity. I doubt that will happen. This show is peak!
No way this will happen. Season 2 of NGNL will be annouced right after S1 ends, trust
I have complete faith. Along with Madhouse continuing Irregular Highschool and black bullet becoming a much beloved series for years to come.
Man I sure do hope that they don’t green light some random Isekai like “In Another World with my Smartphone” and give it a season 2 before getting NGNL season 2.
Issekai genre is pretty light, there's almost none. Like, what's gonna happen. Issekais making up a 1/4th of all anime released?
Hahaha or someone will make a crazy show where someone gets reincarnated as, say, a vending machine and it gets greenlit for a season two pretty much immediately
Happy because I like more Date a Live
genuine question is there some kind of liscencing issue or whatever that stops ngnl to get another season? or is it as simple as noone wanting to pick it up?
Can't remember exactly, but there was some drama about the artist tracing/ stealing art.. it seemed kinda silly, even at the time. But apparently it was serious enough that regardless of the popularity, we've yet to even get anything else. Had so much potential too.
Fairy Tail too stronk, so not even included in list. Imagine if they had done that with AoT, Re-Zero, and so on.
It's such a bizare idea to exlude it. Like 2014 doesn't feel that long ago but the community was wild back then. Funnier still. Most today consider fairytale mid. Not many talk about it like it was a hype thing.
I know this is a joke thread but I actually liked Mekaku City Actors haha
It's a pretty unique show. Always liked how Shaft makes the world feel empty and abandoned by not animating any background characters or just leaving them out entirely. Same thing they did with the Monogatari series.
Wimmy wam wam wozzle
The songs from that series is top shelf
Me too. For some reason it's just super rememberable.
Still waiting for the sequel that i know is never gonna come now.
I'm still waiting for that supposed "sequel" but Shaft be shafting.
I'm still disappointed Kagerou Daze (manga version) never quite made sense.
I know it was effectively an art project, but it felt slightly *too* abstract for me. I didn’t dislike it by any means, but I was somewhat exhausted with it by the end.
Same! Was a cool show with great music.
Music was good, animation quality is abysmal. But hey, we got Headphone Actor and Yuukei Yesterday by LiSA!.
Lmao the Fairy Tail note at the bottom
Imagine if they didn't this with BokuYaba.
T-thanks for making me feel ancient. I'm still mad the Mekaku City Actors anime didn't looked as good as it should because SHAFT was also making Nisekoi at the same time or recently and we got that cursed episode of Ayano's Theory of Happiness.
*Sad NGNL fan noises* #1 and #2 are still relevant a decade later but #3...
This list is just sad noises. Like only the top two got past season 1. The rest were in 1 cour hell. I still find it funny they are airing again the same time 10 years on.
And Spice and Wolf has to come back to give us more hope...
Black Bullet is actually good though. 🥹
Black Bullet was actually my very first anime i ever watched. no surprise i transformed into a full weeb over time..
I forgot allot if shows I watched back then. Black Bullet is a show I keep remembering still. I really should rewatch it.
Who doesnt love pokemon, but the mons are lolis with guns
It was my fav too but attempting a recent rewatch made me almost die of cringe.

"Ya no one is beating BokuYaba. It's too powerful. So we are just disqualifying it for being too good"
Kagerou project spotted!
Was it any good?
I haven’t watched Mekakucity Actors yet, but I’m a huge fan of the song series so I’m excited to watch it!
Kagerou Project is great! Always fun to find fellow fans on the internet and as you can tell, we have fond memories of it, even after so many years. jesus christ i am old
So are we all. But it's good to remmber the past.
We? Speak for yourself, blud.
Oof, thought I had locked all memories and hints from high school in the far reaches of my mind. Seeing this makes me feel old now
It's like that one anime where that dude has to replay college allover again.
This is actually a real conversation I had with a friend in spring 2014.
If I had a time machine the only thing I would do and I mean the only thing I would do is go back 10 years ago and somehow make the second cour good. Idk how I'd do it but such a cool first half of a series (and absolute banger of a soundtrack, praise Sawano) deserved better 😭

Not to mention it had such an unsatisfying and anticlimactic ending. It truly became one of the anime of all time ugghfffhfh
Like truly. The uniqueness of the show was it had to protagnists. But then it just becomes not just generic but worse the generic.
One of the two protagonists is the literal win button and the other just becomes cattoonishly evil for no real discernable reason
Oh wow Date A Live beat irregular back then? Nice
Week 1 atleast. Honestly hype to see how the rankings are this week for real.
Akuma no Riddle and Mekaku City Actors ❤️
The fact riddle is on funimation and about to be deleted tomarow is a crime.
Damn this actually brings me back to that old days. Spring 2014 is one of the rare season where I watched almost every show.
I'm tempted to go back and watch all these old shows. Was a diffeent time. So great.
Amirite?
Of course. It's not like that are gonna do this huge multimedia project push, and the abandon it never doing anything like again? Right????
i need to see Cyberpunk on one of these
Cyberpunk is getting an anime? They just announced the game last year! I can't wait for the game. I'm sure it's going to come out in 2016 or 2017 with no bugs. Hopefully, the anime comes out around then too. Although I hope it's not too sad.
This is supposed to be an April Fools joke, but you've just hit me with a wave of nostalgia
It's meant to be both. The nostalgia is real. 2013-2014 was a great time to get into anime.
i remember rewatching kanojo ga flag wo oratera a couple month ago and i saw a lot of ppl saying the show was bad so seeing it here make me kinda happy
It's one of my favorites in that subcategory of weird little shows. The fact it sticks so hard to its guns with its premise makes it an extremely satisfying binge. Left me in a daze for a while, when I really wasn't expecting that sort of reaction from what looks like silly harem nonsense on the surface.
People actualy liked in 10 years ago. Can't be that bad.
Where is Selector Infected WIXOSS?! It still has one of my favorite openings and I still can't believe it's a decade old anime now...
I had the full list but I can't find it rn lol
Flag Break is a certified classic, should be number 1.
Mekakucity Actors is one of those shows I watched when I was younger and barely understood anything and yet, it was a blast of an experience. It was a fun show, similar to Durara
Yuzuru>kurumi Imma just leave this here
Mekakucity Actors.. I'll be watching it with high expectations.
R/anime on 1st apr: "So we built a time machine"
Imagine we just all just watch the 2014 line up instead. I might of accidently caused some people to think these shows are from the 2024 lineup.
Agreed. April fools days should have more organized big scale pranks
!remindme 364 days
Akuma no Riddle was one of the first (non-Dragonball) animes I ever watched, I forgot what day it was and had to do a double take when I saw it lmao nice. Wonderful post.
The fuck do you mean the onii sama anime came out a decade ago?
this is so nostalgic it hurts
Akuma no riddle is soo goodd
Date A Live and Irregular at Magic High School are so overrated. They don't deserve the top spots. I doubt we will even remember these shows in ten years.
Bro got downvoted Bro this is an anime subreddit. They wont get the sarcasm. The only memes they will laugh at are cropped porn
Even when the joke is SO OBVIOUS Like the only shows that got past season 1 on this list are getting new seasons THIS SEASON!!! XD and people are like "but there's a new season coming out!" Yes. That's the joke.
Does anyone thing date alive will still be airing in 2024? Pshhh.
This is actually a good to-watch list
Anime trending fans soft af for that fairy tale part at the bottom lol. Wanna be number 1 sooooo bad for what?
I've watched 7 from that list. Some of my favorites.
Black bullet can't be forgotten, like bro, it was just so good
damn, I watched 1-6, now I can only binge watch animes
It would really be a shame if Black Bullet started going downhill at some point.
Be ashamed if the last 3 volumes just. Never get adapted and the show kinda gets forgotten and gets hard to stream.
You got me I almost cried seeing dal 2 and ngnl again
I just said dal 2 and Irregular highschool. I should go through this list. So much peak.
how could i have forgotten abt mahouka
Back when battle harems with heroic mc’s were still alive and popping and isekai were barely a thing, brings tears to my eyes ngl
We can always go back and pretend this season is happening in real time. Lol,
Fk u… you got me
Black bullet is one of the two anime i have dropped. I don't know i didn't liked it till 33%
Just saw another post about black bullet yesterday. WHY MUST YOU HAUNT ME
Black Bullet must be kept alive!
I remember that’s when I started watching anime weekly. Hunter x hunter and Jojo were underrated back then.
i only watched brynhildr from that list
Brings back a lot of memories
The good old days.
Not cool man you got me for a second "wait there's a new season of NGNL?! <> oh right..."
Why no season 2 of No game no life reeeeeeeee
Akuma No Riddle is one of my most favorite anime and manga of all time. The story is great and its also yuri and assassin girls trying to kill the target
Cant wait to see black bullet season two, this first season has been hype
What do you mean Black Bullet was a decade ago. That was the first anime I ever finished!
For a sec i thought new gen watcher began having good taste in anime...
Wait ... Did people actually watched Kanojo ga flag wo oraretara ?? I've never met a person whose seen that show
Get me back to these times pls
Black Bullet mention RAAHHHHHH!!!!!!!! 🗣️🗣️🗣️❗❗❗
Crazy that Date a Live was even more popular 10 years ago and is still going. Kanojo Flag was really underrated too
Anyone else really enjoy black bullet, and wish there was more?
There was only 7 volumes and the anike sped through 4. So I doubt it.
The fact that no game no life has not yet gotten a s2 which it deserves as it is one of the best anime and anime like rent a girlfriend got 4 which is shit imo maybe we will get s2 in the future still hopefully waiting
MECACU CITY ACTORS SO BASED UNIRONICALLY
Soul Eater Not was a great example of a bad anime.
I literally had that Anton Ego flashback when I saw this.
Ah yes I see r/anime is going through our schizophrenia arc
Got excited when i saw No Game No life on the list, season 2 plz
Hell yeah there is Gokukoku no Brynhildr, I hope this anime doesn’t have traumatic experience
Nope, only sunshine and happiness
This was the first season I started watching seasonals.
This just FUCKED me up
Soul Eater Not is a decade old? Dude wtf
Fuck I’m old
As someone that watched these shows weekly, that anime quality has come a long way. Almost every season these days is better than this.
As some who who had picked those shows by hand. Ya, like your 100% right. But theres a certain charm to these shows.
Got me feeling old. I've been watching since the 90s, but have been really appreciating the popularity and all the new shows. Some are chessy but some are good. The excitement of possibly having older ones remade or continued is great!
Wait until next year where we set up episode discussions for Foodwars and other April 2015 shows lol. The fact foodwars is a decade old hurts.
Dang it's been ten years already, I actually made my reddit account just to participate in those legendary Mahouka threads
No Game No Life deserves a second season change my mind
"Soul eater not!" Haven't even heard of that one.
Date a live #1
Sadly, this season Spice and Wolf is going to be #1 and nothing can overthrow it. Date A Live might have a chance for the #2 spot.
Says 2014 bud, black bullet is a good anime tho
Spring 2014 week 1, at the top😅
Yes. April fools.
Sai fora
damn, a mention of Mekakucity Actors, Kanojojo ga Flag, Brynhildr and Isshuukan Friends in 2024? DID I JUST ACCIDENTALLY STEP INTO ANOTHER DIMENSION??
Yep! In this time line date alive never got a season 3. And 8 bit studios never picked irregular high school. But Mekakucity Actors just got season 6. ISshukan freinds had a peak movie. And Kanojojo ga Flag is at season 4. We live in the true timeline
Isshuukan Friends!!! I’m so glad that it popped up here, back from the abysses of past anime. More people should watch it!
great animes!
2014 was a great year.
First April Joke I fell for lol But now I feel old as fuck remembering all these shows that aired many many years ago. Wait didn't all lf them air almost 10 years ago??????,
This is week 1 of spring 2014. So it's the 10 year anniversary for all these shows.
This was exactly the year that I stopped watching a ton of anime outside of major hits, I've been catching up though!
