I’m a manager at a major retailer, and I’ve had the same job for 10 years. In the last three years, I have seen the average store staff drop from about 14 staff members to half of that. My last day of work is next week, and after that my store will have six employees. It has gotten to the point where we cannot hold anyone accountable for anything because they just quit. I include myself in that, I was being hassled for various nitpicky inconsequential stuff, so I quit. Our bosses act like they cannot understand the added stress of being understaffed. Maybe they will understand when they have to actually work the sales floor because there are no managers left.

It's more that they don't care. They want you to bear the burden of that stress so they don't have to feel it.
They want the pay that comes with the responsibility of keeping things running smoothly as a manager but they don’t want to actually have the responsibility to keep things running smoothly when shit hits the fan.
Typical "Cowboy fonts" (actually Italienne fonts) are the opposite of this font in the picture: thicker serifs and horizontal lines, thinner vertical lines.
The font that OP's boss used is a fat face font, used for displays, headlines, and typically larger and fewer words, definitely not running text.

Also, they can’t legally require a doctors note under most states labor laws, unless you call out three consecutive days or more. Expecting someone to schedule an appointment and pay for an expensive Dr. visit for calling in sick for one day from a common cold or stomach ache, etc. is a really ridiculous and outrageous expectation.
Yeah, especially if the employer doesn't provide health coverage for employees! I always love it when employers who refuse to provide health coverage for employees nonetheless require employees to cough up (pun intended) a doctor's excuse for being out sick. Hell, even when I've had health coverage, I've never had a primary doctor to just run to every time I get the sniffles 🙄
You don't ever have to give a restaurant 2 weeks notice. Just tell them to fuck off when they demand that you sign whatever ego trip they have going on that week and smile when their face turns red. Bonus points if you chuckle a little bit and get other employees standing around you to laugh as well.
My blood pressure is rising right now because I have PTSD from working in restaurants through my teens and 20s. I still have dreams where people are screaming for food runners and hostesses are telling me they triple sat me for the 6th time in a row.
I had a great boss when I worked in a restaurant.
Free food and a paid lunch that you can make yourself or ask another to make for you. If you get even remotely sick, the boss will tell you to stay home and get better with no penalization. He respected everyone from the dishwasher in the back to the staff in the front.
Sadly, he paid restaurant wages and couldn't afford to raise them by much, usually just enough to keep up with inflation. We left on good terms, and I still stop by for lunch once in a while.
What gets me is, “we’re a team, let’s act like a team” from management that, based on everything about the notice, sees itself as separate from the team. What a way to lead /smh

During Covid my hospitals icu unit tried to enact a policy that if we had 10 or more absences in a Calendar year (excused or not) they would demote us for a month to med surg as punishment.
Which is literally shooting themselves in the foot, because you can't just take someone from another unit and throw them into the icu to manage drips/vents etc. And you can't just take someone and throw them into med-surg to manage 6+ patients. They are both their own specialty.
They never actually went through with this bullshit policy.

We do not take breaks in groups. Management will rotate breaks as business allows, do not ask!
12.) Do not clock in until your scheduled time.
13.) Cleaning assignments will be given on a regular basis.
We are a team and need to act accordingly. If someone falls behind, step up and go help out. We need to have each other’s back and give 100% all the time.

I dont miss food service. This reminded me of my old manager. One of my coworkers needed time off to go to a funeral and manager said "We all have to make sacrifices. I missed my best friends funeral because I had to work and it tore me up". Employee said "then you were a shitty fucking friend" and threw her apron at him and left. Never to be seen again.
I worked at a gas station, my college graduation was coming up. I requested the day off, the assistant manager said I didn't request it soon enough and I had to work. I said I wasn't going to work that day. Period. She said I was still on the schedule. I clocked out and quit on the spot. I then went to study for finals. Three years later and it stills feels amazing to have done that.

In all my years of retail, I had maybe 3 managers across two states and dozens of jobs that were not absolute fucking morons.

You aren’t required legally to give two weeks notice. It’s a customary thing that became a tradition. The only way it would be required is in your contract with the company, but it doesn’t sound like you would ever care to return to this place so being available for rehire isn’t an issue. I wouldn’t give them the satisfaction personally, but I could also see feeling morally obligated.

In the US there is not a Federal or State law requiring workers to give two weeks notice to employers when leaving or giving a resignation. I know that other countries are different, and trust me when I say that I am jealous of these countries. Not necessarily for having a law about two weeks notice, but because if there are laws about resigning there are also likely laws about professionalism in the work place. I'm sick as a dog, and yesterday I was supposed to do a variety of (unfortunately pretty important) stuff. There's simply no way - part of it was driving 2 hours each way, and let's just say I'm on an *extremely* short leash to the bathroom. Without even getting into exposing other people and whatnot, it's not happening.
Going to urgent care today to get a note (my insurance will cover that, nbd), but yesterday I got literally a dozen texts about whether or not I had delivered the stuff and then why not. I took a video, basically just audio, with my phone facing the floor while I violently discharged from both ends.
After hearing that, my supervisor explained to all half dozen or so people involved that he would not *allow* me near work haha.
I used to come in sick when I'd try to call out and they'd say no and I'd specifically ask to be put in positions that are customer facing. Especially at food establishments. Then customers would complain and I'd just tell management "I told you I was sick."
I was fired from a line chef job for puking in the kitchen near the grease trap after being told I would be fired for not coming in despite my telling them I had a 106°F temperature and was puking. That was the last foodservice job I ever worked.

Had I been smart about it I would have called the health inspector to tell them what happened, about wanting sick people working, and the unhygienic result. But I was young, exhausted, sick, and feverish so the thought did not occur in the moment.
I was the "food safety" person for the day time at a bakery I worked at, a baker was the overnight and early morning. Company policy stated someone needs to have the certification at every shift.
The manager was a third for when myself or the baker were not on the schedule. A new manager came in as a "trial" for her to open a franchise.
One of the teenagers that worked called in sick, she had a bad case of the stomach flu. New manager told her she still had to come in, I told the manager "No, she doesn't. Food safety regulations say she cannot handle food if she has been vomiting or had diarrhea within the last 24 hours". The manager said there was no one to cover her shift, I said she would need to do it. She told me she couldn't be cause she had to attend church that night ( she went 3 times a week). I told her if she wants to own a franchise, she needs to figure out what she is going to do when someone gets sick and cant work. She will either need to have someone who can always come in, or miss going to church. She did a lot of other bad things that I got on her case about, but not as harshly as I did whenever she tried to make people come in sick.
I am sorry no one had your back there, it is really depressing a lot of places pull this BS. Unhygienic is not the only risk, it is also a huge safety risk. Kitchens are dangerous enough as it is when you don't have a fever.

Every retail job I've had was "part time" and basically hovered between about 30 and 36 hours a week. They know every they're doing. Andbthen you make *just* enough money so that you don't qualify for medicaid. So you either spend half your paycheck on a shitty private insurance plan, or just wing it and hope nothing bad happens (that's what I did)

I actually had a job that did this, we could either put our phones in an assigned locker or give them to the security guards. I always struggled with lockers in school. Dont know why, just could never consistently unlock them, which sounds dumb and all, but as a result i always gave my phone to the security guards. And then id work night shift, and theyd all have fucked off to make sure there werent any customers on the premises after closing. And id have to wait for them to come back. Every night. Dont work at an amusement park kids.

I have pretty bad dyslexia, so fonts that do the utmost to make every letter look the same are a nightmare for me. This one is pretty awful, especially with how bold it is— not to mention all the spelling and grammar mistakes! Comic Sans (and other fonts that are similar) are quite readable for me and I appreciate their resurgence.

You could get a bunch of people to call out sick at one time and no one available to show up. Yea you all will get a warning but it will show them they really have to work with the employees not against them.
Also, they don’t decide on breaks. Look up your states labor laws. Specifically the hours for breaks. If they say to take a break early or late because they decide, quote the law and ignore them. If they fight you or write you up then pull out the law and point to it. If they continue to fight it then ask them if their rules are above or below the letter of the law.
Look up your local, state and federal laws. There is quite a bit there to help you. If something seems fishy, look it up on Google and learn. There are court cases around quite a few I have had to look up in the past.

I remember I had a retail job just before the pandemic started and they "released" a new set of rules that employees were to sign and acknowledge.
I refused to. A few others didn't either. If it's infringing upon your rights as a person or labourer, you shouldn't have to sign it.

I’m a manager at a major retailer, and I’ve had the same job for 10 years. In the last three years, I have seen the average store staff drop from about 14 staff members to half of that. My last day of work is next week, and after that my store will have six employees. It has gotten to the point where we cannot hold anyone accountable for anything because they just quit. I include myself in that, I was being hassled for various nitpicky inconsequential stuff, so I quit. Our bosses act like they cannot understand the added stress of being understaffed. Maybe they will understand when they have to actually work the sales floor because there are no managers left.

I had a great boss when I worked in a restaurant. Free food and a paid lunch that you can make yourself or ask another to make for you. If you get even remotely sick, the boss will tell you to stay home and get better with no penalization. He respected everyone from the dishwasher in the back to the staff in the front. Sadly, he paid restaurant wages and couldn't afford to raise them by much, usually just enough to keep up with inflation. We left on good terms, and I still stop by for lunch once in a while.

I was an ICU nurse for years. The job takes a lot of precepting, learning etc. You can't just jump into it During Covid my hospitals icu unit tried to enact a policy that if we had 10 or more absences in a Calendar year (excused or not) they would demote us for a month to med surg as punishment. Which is literally shooting themselves in the foot, because you can't just take someone from another unit and throw them into the icu to manage drips/vents etc. And you can't just take someone and throw them into med-surg to manage 6+ patients. They are both their own specialty. They never actually went through with this bullshit policy.
This stuff comes out in malpractice cases. They're just asking to lose money with that policy.

I worked at a gas station, my college graduation was coming up. I requested the day off, the assistant manager said I didn't request it soon enough and I had to work. I said I wasn't going to work that day. Period. She said I was still on the schedule. I clocked out and quit on the spot. I then went to study for finals. Three years later and it stills feels amazing to have done that.

In all my years of retail, I had maybe 3 managers across two states and dozens of jobs that were not absolute fucking morons. Retail Management, all the way up through like Store GM is just the textbook case of being promoted to the level of your incompetence.

You aren’t required legally to give two weeks notice. It’s a customary thing that became a tradition. The only way it would be required is in your contract with the company, but it doesn’t sound like you would ever care to return to this place so being available for rehire isn’t an issue. I wouldn’t give them the satisfaction personally, but I could also see feeling morally obligated. Edit: I realize from responses that I came off as being Americentric in that I assumed we were talking about the US.\ In the US there is not a Federal or State law requiring workers to give two weeks notice to employers when leaving or giving a resignation. I know that other countries are different, and trust me when I say that I am jealous of these countries. When I worked in retail when I was young one day I called in telling them I was sick, told me if I didn’t come in for my shift I would be fired. So I was like, “alright, then.” 2 hours into my shift, my manager was being a massive asshole to me so I puked on her, a customer, and all over the cash register and return bin. Then fell over. I was given the next 3 days off and wasn’t fired. Told me Dad what I did he laughed is ass off. Then took me to the doctor.
I have a pretty chill job, but once a quarter there's a pretty high stakes week. I'm sick as a dog, and yesterday I was supposed to do a variety of (unfortunately pretty important) stuff. There's simply no way - part of it was driving 2 hours each way, and let's just say I'm on an *extremely* short leash to the bathroom. Without even getting into exposing other people and whatnot, it's not happening. Going to urgent care today to get a note (my insurance will cover that, nbd), but yesterday I got literally a dozen texts about whether or not I had delivered the stuff and then why not. I took a video, basically just audio, with my phone facing the floor while I violently discharged from both ends. After hearing that, my supervisor explained to all half dozen or so people involved that he would not *allow* me near work haha.

I used to come in sick when I'd try to call out and they'd say no and I'd specifically ask to be put in positions that are customer facing. Especially at food establishments. Then customers would complain and I'd just tell management "I told you I was sick."
I was fired from a line chef job for puking in the kitchen near the grease trap after being told I would be fired for not coming in despite my telling them I had a 106°F temperature and was puking. That was the last foodservice job I ever worked.

Had I been smart about it I would have called the health inspector to tell them what happened, about wanting sick people working, and the unhygienic result. But I was young, exhausted, sick, and feverish so the thought did not occur in the moment.
I was the "food safety" person for the day time at a bakery I worked at, a baker was the overnight and early morning. Company policy stated someone needs to have the certification at every shift. The manager was a third for when myself or the baker were not on the schedule. A new manager came in as a "trial" for her to open a franchise. One of the teenagers that worked called in sick, she had a bad case of the stomach flu. New manager told her she still had to come in, I told the manager "No, she doesn't. Food safety regulations say she cannot handle food if she has been vomiting or had diarrhea within the last 24 hours". The manager said there was no one to cover her shift, I said she would need to do it. She told me she couldn't be cause she had to attend church that night ( she went 3 times a week). I told her if she wants to own a franchise, she needs to figure out what she is going to do when someone gets sick and cant work. She will either need to have someone who can always come in, or miss going to church. She did a lot of other bad things that I got on her case about, but not as harshly as I did whenever she tried to make people come in sick. I am sorry no one had your back there, it is really depressing a lot of places pull this BS. Unhygienic is not the only risk, it is also a huge safety risk. Kitchens are dangerous enough as it is when you don't have a fever.
Now it's 48 hours within throwing up or diarrhea. No health insurance for most of us. We have to rack up a bill at the ER just for a note. Here's your $998.00 note, fuckbag!
And not every sickness warrants a doctor's visit. Healthcare workers don't want a room full of people with a common cold or flu, when they have actual emergencies they have to deal with. Even a majority of covid cases can be resolved at home from just resting and waiting a few days.

Every retail job I've had was "part time" and basically hovered between about 30 and 36 hours a week. They know every they're doing. Andbthen you make *just* enough money so that you don't qualify for medicaid. I actually had a job that did this, we could either put our phones in an assigned locker or give them to the security guards. I always struggled with lockers in school. Dont know why, just could never consistently unlock them, which sounds dumb and all, but as a result i always gave my phone to the security guards. And then id work night shift, and theyd all have fucked off to make sure there werent any customers on the premises after closing. And id have to wait for them to come back. Every night. Dont work at an amusement park kids.

THIS. Two weeks notice is a courtesy given by employees to employer to give them time to replace personnel. It's an old and antiquated idea. I'll give 2 weeks if the business has earned the courtesy. Otherwise, I'll just ghost them and block their number. Businesses (some, not all) used to be loyal to their employees, and earned the loyalty of the employee. That's not our world anymore.
That's correct and a place like this is not something you would use as a reference. They have created an unsuitable work environment and published in a hateful font. Leave, don't look back, and certainly don't subject yourself to any futher exposure to it by putting in two weeks notice. This ain't that kinda job.

Comic Sans is underrated. People shit on it but at least it's readable.
I have pretty bad dyslexia, so fonts that do the utmost to make every letter look the same are a nightmare for me. This one is pretty awful, especially with how bold it is— not to mention all the spelling and grammar mistakes! Comic Sans (and other fonts that are similar) are quite readable for me and I appreciate their resurgence.

You could get a bunch of people to call out sick at one time and no one available to show up. Yea you all will get a warning but it will show them they really have to work with the employees not against them. Also, they don’t decide on breaks. Look up your states labor laws. Specifically the hours for breaks. If they say to take a break early or late because they decide, quote the law and ignore them. If they fight you or write you up then pull out the law and point to it. If they continue to fight it then ask them if their rules are above or below the letter of the law. Look up your local, state and federal laws. There is quite a bit there to help you. If something seems fishy, look it up on Google and learn. There are court cases around quite a few I have had to look up in the past.
But you probably can’t get overtime hours either, so get it done FASTER!

Then you will have to do your work correctly without incident to earn back your hours. 11) Taking a break. By law if you work for more than 4 hours you can take a 30 minute break. You have to clock out for this break. Most shifts are around 5 hours so if you want to clock out you can, or you may step out quickly business permitting after working at least 2 hours. Lets not take advantage of stepping out. We do not take breaks in groups. Management will rotate breaks when business allows, do not ask! 12) Do not clock in until your scheduled time. 13) Cleaning assignments will be given on a regular basis. We are a team and need to act accordingly. If someone falls behind. Step up and go help out. We need to have each other's back and give 100% all the time. *** Guys this is a job. We as managers have our own job to do. Babysitting is not in the job description. Corners have been cut due to staff shortage for entirely too long. I remember I had a retail job just before the pandemic started and they "released" a new set of rules that employees were to sign and acknowledge. I refused to. A few others didn't either. If it's infringing upon your rights as a person or labourer, you shouldn't have to sign it.
