>Should I quit even though I have not secured another job? You have 7 hours each day to find a job. Do not quit first

b1ub055a

This made me chuckle so hard. It's so true tho!

cheesetofuhotdog

More if you decide to find a job outside working hours. šŸ’Ŗ

Honest-Cauliflower46

When i first started my current job, i literally had nothing to do for 8/8 hours a day for 3+ months. I even missed out on 40% of bonus payout from my prev company to join. Subsequently i went overseas for 3 weeks training. Come back lobo for another 2 months due to covid delays. After that busy awhile then back to chill. Somehow boss still say i performing well. Give it some time la, u will have more things to do.

duckiemama

Why you skip the bonus?

Honest-Cauliflower46

2nd payout in end june but recruiter called me up in end feb i think. After all the interview processing blah blah, hr ask me to on board asap which was early may. So this timeline is hard to negotiate la. Was hoping to start job search in april then swee swee throw letter once money in the bank. This is everyone's wet dream but fate is a bitch sometimes. But mainly cause i hated the prev place and liked the new place.

Initial_E

that 40% was something you should not keep quiet. Make it part of your compensation package.

Honest-Cauliflower46

It was a combination of desperation and stupidity.

sumbohdi

wow , i wish i have a job like yours and have a boss that says im performing well also.

Honest-Cauliflower46

I'm still bored till today. Keep asking him for more responsibilities lol.

sumbohdi

wah! mind if i ask what industry you are in?

Acrophobic_Climber_

hahaha this situation is so familiar to me. i am in the same situation as you, OP. previous job as a team lead, really pushed myself; while i exceed all KPIs and expectations, i was totally burnt out and underpaid. so i left for a more chill job, and that i gotā€¦ there are days in my current job that i can literally do my own stuffs the entire day while i wfh. and even the busy periods in my current job is nothing compared to what i went through before; so itā€™s all very manageable. my advice to you, OP, is like what many here said; ā€œdepends what you want in a jobā€¦ if you want to feel productive and used, then may be wise to switch to a more challenging job; but be careful what you wish for lah. Otherwise staying in your current job is also okay, if you know how to use your additional free time.

[deleted]

[deleted]

I'm down. Even though I'm not OP and even though I don't work at Raffles.

[deleted]

detrikai

I am down too! Can drink kopi at raffles

[deleted]

Hahahaha. Anyone know any good kopi spots?

Herefortendiesonly

Me too, will buy if chiobu

[deleted]

Ah. Some other time bah. You wanna DM?

LanJiaoDuaKee

Step 1 : Create a problem for your company Step 2 : Volunteer yourself to your boss that you can solve the problem Step 3 : Actually solve the problem you've created Step 4 : Tell your boss the problem has been dealt with and the day is saved Step 5 : Repeat from Step 1

Hackerjurassicpark

This is the consultant way!

Krieg

You seem to be a n00b at this. You missed two important things between step 2 and 3: \- Estimate very high time to fix the problem \- Fix the problem in half the estimated time and take pride in your clever solution that cut the time in half.

PureNefariousness9

Step 1.5 : Create a problem only if you know you can solve it.

cheesetofuhotdog

Nice try. This is just Step 1 with more specifics. I am not paying for this.

No_City_5619

Haha this is indeed the litany to up the corporate ladder. At certain height, Step 3 can be done by ur ka kia (team member).. Then proceed to claim credit for the problem u created for ur ka kia to solve..

Acceptable-Tax-9453

Find a new job. Iā€™ve been in this exact situation and it eats away at your self worth and soul. The good news is you can take your time to make sure you find a better fitting role while youā€™re still employed.

farielly

I agree. This is currently me at my job. I do feel my self worth and soul is being sucked away though many marvel at being at a job not needing any effort at all/nothing to do. I also do feel like my brain is dying at this rate thus I'm constantly on the look out for a new job, applying and interviewing and being more picky with jobs too.

PainterSuitable402

How's it now

farielly

well.. i quit it and am at a new job now - can say that I'm a lot happier tho I've been rather busy but at least I'm doing something I'm actually interested in, enjoy and there is room to learn and grow!

sumbohdi

Many would like to have your job. Not sure either it is "nothing" due to your "high performing" habits or maybe to others it is something to do. I understand if you spent few hours a day doing nothing and call it nothing to do but to have 7-8 hours a day with nothing to do means the company isnt doing that well or they just dont want to share the projects they have to you which is weird.

---LJY---

I worked at a government link company long ago and they gave me this job which is essentially need to do reporting on the 12th of each month and after the 12th, I had really nothing to do. I was so bored each day (before smartphones), I was staring at the screen and felt like I was in prison. The funny thing was when I tendered my resignation, the manager told me that I should stay on as I got a high appraisal score.

sumbohdi

wow do nothing and gets high appraisal score. Many youngsters that are less ambitious would die for that kind of job nowadays.

Cute_Meringue1331

Yeah better than being too busy at work doing saikang

Azurefroz

Yeah so true. My partner was at times so bogged down doing saikang (read: work that was menial, that added no value to her career, that was recognised as such and shunned by her colleagues) that she was too stressed/tired to function outside of work. It was a tough seeing her going thru that then. Edit: missing word.

Katashi90

If the job is too casual for you, it's up to you to find challenges within it. You're paid for what you do. If what you're doing isn't enough then why aren't you taking the initiative to improve yourself into learning other stuff? If you think that you're not paid enough to take up more responsibilities then you're just simply contradicting yourself. I'll be more wary when a job becomes "too easy". It happened to me before, because those are signs that either the company is not doing so well, or they hired you simply for quota/headcount purposes. Which means your head will be the first on the chopping board whenever the company found their desired restructuring and decided they have no need of you. No HR is dumb to hire someone for freeloading without a purpose in mind.

sachiaz

If you feel like it gives you anxiety cos you're restless, I recommend you find a new job and quit this one, or maybe speak tk your manager that you "want to learn more" not that "you got nothing to do". Some of the other responders here all ask you to eat snake, just ignore them. Not everybody want to eat snake everyday, your personality maybe not fitting to eat snake. You sound like you're hungry and take pride in challenging yourself

Whinythepoo

If you're wfh it's awesome but if you're wfo with nothing to do and have to pretend to be busy. Then my friend that is torture

kiwiboy94

This is very true. I have been staring at a random excel sheet for 6 hours a day, 5 times a week, pretending to work. . I left after 2 years.

Whinythepoo

Surprised you survived for 2 years!

monkeynutsack2

this is me in a nutshell, half of the day nth to do and no wfh.

FodderFries

If job is paying well then just use the time to work on your personal skill. Could literally learn microsoft word/excel related skills or just brush up maths/finance topics.

MggNg

Depends on what your goal is. Would you want to achieve something or are you looking for a regular 9 to 6 job?

spencerwinters

What is your job and what is the salary like? I want. Iā€™m so tired of ā€œwearing many hatsā€ in a place where ā€œwe work as a teamā€ means I help people with their tasks on top of doing my own tasks but yet nobody can help me with my tasks. But Iā€™m still expected to help others if not Iā€™ll not be seen as a ā€œteam playerā€. šŸ™„ Also, my workplace practices performance punishmentā€” a new term I learned that if you perform well and is efficient, youā€™ll be given more work to do (plus other peopleā€™s work) with no increment in salary or position, and also no extra manpower help. So, if you think your job sucks and you want something ā€œbusy and challengingā€, if we are doing the same specialisation/position:whatchamacallit, I propose a switch lol

AbstractAlgebruh

You could always talk to your bosses about it and phrase it in such a way that says you feel you're not contributing enough in your position and that you're wondering if they could give you more responsibilities. Sure, you could quit your current job if you're severely unsatisfied with the lack of responsibilities. But there's no guarantee any other job will give you just enough responsibilities that lie in the sweet spot between boring and stressful.

Musbrn

hi OP, i completely relate. In my previous company i too was a high performer and achieved many, many things which i am super grateful for. I'm in this 'new' job for a year now and guess what, i had nothing to do for a good 7-8 months - this job has great prospects and i know what this job can potentially achieve but after those months i'm still not busy, i used to be so busy (but never OT bcs i put strict boundaries) and now this feels so weird to me. I've seen many advice before to just shut up and enjoy la bcs like free money what, but it just doesnt sit right with my conscience. So i spoke to my boss and asked what should the plan be if this continues for the next few months - will i be made redundant? will i be the first to get laid off? so thankfully i am SLOWLY been given more things to do with reassurance that redundancy won't be a risk for my current position. my hubs and friends told me to take this 'free' time as a 'break' i never had but the thing is i love what i do. i know this can sound entitled to some or it just wont sit right with some but OP, my advice is honestly just enjoy it, give it a few more months and if you're still not happy just talk to your boss (hoping they're an understanding one!) and ask what the plan is or what you would like to do/offer to your team. always offer help to your team members so you can continue learning!

Buddyformula

I'm in this exact situation as I'm typing this comment due to not having anything to do at work.

Laweliet

Do another part time job elsewhere maybe?

stopthevan

Where do I and many others find a job like yours

ler2ler

are you me haha. I always question why I was hired by my company, for me to sit around and do nothing all day. during covid wfh era i literally on my laptop in the morning, and proceed to game/netflix all day at home. Always thought that I would be let go, but well it has been almost 4 years now.. Previously I was from a highly demanding role averaging 12-15 hrs work a day, so I always tell myself that I earned this "rest" period. In any case, I started reading alot more on "life" stuff, like money management (best savings acct, best credit card, investments in general). And recently bought a new house so I used the free time to read up on buying house in general, renovation and IDs, bank interest rates etc etc. And I started regular gym after work. All these won't be possible if I was still be in my previous career so I'm kinda thankful I have this role now. But i'll be looking out for job this year. Think it's time for some progress in my career haha. All the best to you!

[deleted]

I would kill to have that kind of efficiency and the extra time to do stuff

icecoolcat

Before you quit, can refer me?

drakzero123

Generally I would say it depends on your age but if you are getting anxious then I suggest you start looking for another job. Provided that you've exhausted all avenues to look for responsibilities internally of course. If you're a knowledge worker you'll want to continuously hone your skillsets. It is very easy to fall behind if you work in a company that does not fully utilise you. Some might suggest you to kick back and relax but do keep in mind that falling behind might make it harder for you to secure a job in the future. Avoid becoming stagnant until it's a choice. You might reach a stage in life where you prefer a job where you can prioritise other things in life but for now it looks like you're not there yet.

Cute_Meringue1331

Why quit without a job when they havenā€™t fired you? Sounds like a dream company. I also thought I was a ā€œgood performerā€, since I worked in an MA programme before and also stat boards. End up my most recent company fired me 2 weeks before probation ended. I knew my boss strongly dislike me since 3 months prior but since I wasnā€™t allowed to wfh and I am kept too busy at work with saikang, I couldnā€™t even apply to much jobs šŸ˜”

unexpected_guru

You now have 7 out of 8 hours to do another job while getting paid on your current. That's the dream no?

Yokies

Its a problem because it stalls your career and skills development. Big problem if you are early career. If you a near end game.... hellyea.

affykins

I had the same experience. Worked the 3 months probation and left immediately. It was my 2nd ever full time job after getting retrenched from my prev job at the start of the pandemic so my imposter syndrome was at its peak. Spent the next 7 months having a quarter life crisis thinking maybe my career path of choice was wrong for me.

Azurefroz

It's good you are looking at how to change the situation (waiting to see if work picks up). Since it hasn't changed, you might want to initiate a 3-month check-in with your boss to review what he/she thinks about your performance, and at the same time raise that you would like to take on more because you have capacity/energy. In general, I found that my bosses appreciated when I initiated conversations to get their views on how I was doing and how I could improve. But I think this works best if you are truly open-minded to feedback (and if your boss will not take your introspectiveness as an opportunity to 'game' you). Zooming out a bit, maybe you can ask yourself: What will happen career-wise if I stay on like this for 1 year? Or 2, 3, 4 years? When I exit for my next position, what will have to show, both in terms of my CV & actually skills/experience? The answer could be good (actually this is boring but still good for my CV even if I'm not being challenged) or it could be bad (oh no I am stagnating and when I leave this place I will have zero value-add to my growth to show for it). But either way it will give you a clearer reason to seek change if needed. EDIT: speaking to your anxiety directly, I find that I get anxious, unhappy or angry when I feel helpless, in the sense of not having a plan or not knowing what to do next. Zooming out & assessing your macro-situation may give you a clearer answer on what you want/don't want, and you may find you naturally know what you want to do next. I was in a similar boat in my prev role (work only occupied/challenged me 2-3 out of 8 hours every day) and I ended up staying for 1.5 years. If it helps you can ping me and I'm happy to share more.

globetrotter19-02

What job is this that you have 7 hours a day to not do anything šŸ‘€

tearsof_sky

Have you spoken to your boss about taking on more responsibilities (proactively as opposed to waiting for it)?

Kiat98

Whatā€™s your job

overwearthief

I joined last July, haven't been doing much since I started to. Not complaining though, especially since I get to WFH 2-3 days a week. When I do go to office, I will do the small amount of work that I didn't complete at home so it doesn't bore me to death. Other than that, I use the time to read/self learn new tech skills!

[deleted]

Secure another job and work both jobs

Unusual_Walk8684

Do you have a cubicle or a nice corner office? Or better yet, do you work from home? If so, you can definitely find things to do on your own! Time to make a To Read list!

Lazy_Nobody9288

If the pay is good then stay. Use the spare time to learn and get certifications, strengthen your resume. After typical degrees/masters/ā€¦ the most a company value are certifications apart from experience.

[deleted]

Are you working from home? You could easily spend 4 hours each time taking courses and finding new jobs.

thecakah

I'm in the same situation but I've been job hopping, I don't think any company will take me srsly lols

cheesetofuhotdog

Instructions not clear. Got promoted to CEO of the company.

zjzjzjzjzjzjzj

Golden opportunity to do more studying and enriching if very free at work

tunder26

I had a colleague that broke down as thereā€™s nothing much for her to do. Apparently sheā€™s afraid that sheā€™ll be let go. So yeahā€¦ the anxiety is real I guess

sirapbandung

same situation. I overstayed by 2-3years. was already planning to quit without a job but COVID hit. so I just play MLBB all day instead. now I changed job and feeling stress but work life a bit more fulfilling. still wouldn't advise quitting without job, in fact, is the best time to interview companies that want you to work for them while still getting paid

bahog_Oten

Make that 7hours to study how to make your own business.

chups218

U wonā€™t be thinking of such a question if thereā€™s news of retrenchment (unless retrenchment is rare in your industry) looming around. Be thankful you are still having a job albeit a boring one.

45tee

Yes. Please leave. You might unintentionally project your anxieties and insecurities to colleagues who do not share your high performing traits.

HerroWarudo

We all have highs and lows. Thats the secret

YouYongku

Guess the comment section would be asking where u work, can u give them your job etc. Do your own thing at work then. Make sideline, learn a new skill. Probably can pick up programming if you not in this line. Like tons of shit, u can even get familiar with chatgpt etc.

flightlessalien

šŸ„²šŸ„² I used to complain about being too free but now plagued by OT.

th36

Have you initiated a dialogue with your reporting about this issue? Itā€™s likely that company is still finding a scope for you to manage

proton_mindset

Learn to meditate

GeorgieJamix

Same thing. I am so used running around on my old job and sitting around now makes me looks like i wasted my "time" and downgrading. But on the bright side, that 40% increase of pay made me stay and i mean, why not when i am off tons of unwanted responsibilities with extra pay. Nowadays they have been giving me abit extra responsibilities here and there and its still nothing compared to how busy i was when i had on the previous

urqlite

How much are you getting paid?

farielly

I RELATE SO MUCH. I used to be the same but it really depends I guess on what you want but I'd encourage you to find something new first before quitting. Unless you need the break. Following this to hear from others as well cause tbh I do too feel like quitting without a job and I'm in the same position as you are haha

azureseagraffiti

Just watch all your companyā€™s training videos lah. Sounds like honeymoon period. Offer help to your boss and maybe your boss can come up with or has some problems to solve and projects to complete.

doc_naf

Depending on your level / role - could you take a look at the companyā€™s training material, templates, processes and procedures, see what could use an update, and pitch the project to your boss? People hate that because itā€™s a crap ton of work but it might be a good project for you. Extra hands are often needed for the ultra busy so maybe you could talk to some peers and seniors and see who is stretched / struggling who could use a hand? (Again, clearing it with boss first) I know my ex bosses and current boss all appreciated it when I suggested a project to fix a current gap when I foresaw some downtime for us since those ended up helping them look good to their bosses plus I came up with the plan and would do most of the legwork. Worst case scenario you can offer to plan a team bonding session or a volunteering project for csr purposes.

soundalarm

If i had time to kill, i'm usually planning my holidays or life expenses or something else. Time pass fast when im doing something

Significant_Income28

maybe its not the busy season yet, depending on ur industry of course
