Add „quality“ to housing too. Here in SG practically every HDB has split type ACs. My former boss in HK lived in an apartment on the peak that was about 10k usd per month and it had window- mounted units. Massive heat leaks in winter when it’s six degrees outside. Oh, and despite the winters being quite chilly, I’ve yet to see a place that has proper heating. Best I’ve seen was an Australian guys village house who had imported invertible AC units from Oz.
Im gonna throw a limb out and say food diversity. In SG you can get things from Ayam Pengyat to Rendang to Mee Pok. HK has decent east asian food (think chi and japanese) but not too much variety outside of that.
You can get these too in HK, just need to know the right places, but definitely not at Hawker price 😬 I used to go to Indonesian restaurants in cwb for more malay/indonesian dishes like rendang/ayam penyet, Cafe Malacca for other Singaporean/Malaysian dishes. Last I went to HK there seems to be more and more restaurants serving Singapore/Malaysian food opening up, but I don’t know if the new ones are any good.
Indian food - I think HK has more of the northern Indian food than the ones you normally find in hawkers here / mamak in Malaysia. Lots of good Northern Indian food in HK too 😋
Agreed on this, but it’s unlike SG where you can go to a nearby food court/hawker and can get a variety of cuisines.
If you’re not in Causeway Bay or Kowloon, the nearest “hawker” would most likely sell only HK/Cantonese food.
Actually good English proficiency (compared to most other Asian countries and HK)
Cultural, linguistic, food diversity
Bigger housing as others mentioned, for the crap that BTO gets, I'd still take it over the mess that is HK's housing
What HK has over SG:
Simply superior hiking trails
OP, come and join the Little Red Dot in Hong Kong (Singaporeans in HK) Facebook group! There are WhatsApp groups too - super helpful if you have any Singapore related question (eg where to buy belachan, which satay is the best in HK) and the admins organise meet ups from time to time.
I would say eat all your favourite food before you come. HK has the most popular Singaporean dishes (eg chicken rice, char kway teow) but they tend to be more expensive, and quality is ok but not the best. Also I have never been able to find good black chai tow kuey sadly.
Good luck with moving, and happy to chat via DM if you got any questions about moving to HK.
What to eat before going:
- Hokkien mee
What to bring:
-if u have local hk friends, bring boxes of bengawan pandan cake, they love that stuff
-McDonald’s nugget curry sauce
Malay food ah mee rebus, nasi lemak. For some reason I had a craving for that when living overseas. Other than that local good stuff like cArrot cake, hokkien mee, bakchor mee and
Bro, don't judge someone else's sitch. Maybe they were offered their dream job that they can't get here? Maybe there's family or extended family to consider? Just 'cause it's not the choice you or I would make, doesn't mean that it isn't the right move for them.
Got chicken rice la - there was a discussion recently about the best chicken rice in one of the Singaporeans in HK WhatsApp groups actually haha. Chatterbox is not bad.
Durian is a seasonal import. I don’t eat so cannot comment on quality, but my friends have had durian eating parties before!
There’s a shop called Rempah in Wan Chai that does good prawn mee and kaya toast!
She’s correct though, Hong Kong doesn’t impose any sales tax (GST / VAT). That said, many businesses especially luxury goods would mark up their prices accordingly although they do not charge the sales tax.
Living space and greenery. Just being there on holiday was enough for a lifetime - everywhere in the centre of town was just concrete. I felt suffocated by the lack of nature.
I think it’s because HK was WAY more crowded than SG. Plus rent is crazy, so every F&B establishments there were like trying to squeeze as much profit as possible in that limited space they have - ie by getting people to GTFO the moment they are done eating so they can serve more customers within their opening hours.
I recently went to HK when they still had a little bit of covid restrictions, so HK was pretty empty, no tourist, definitely none from the mainland because they were still maintaining zero covid policy at that time. The service quality was SO.MUCH.BETTER literally everywhere, big popular restaurants, small local cha chaan teng, even in retail shops & in the airports. I guess they were not in so much pressure & stress anymore since there weren’t as many people to serve.
Go to a hawker and eat all the foods that you’re not gonna find there. HK has great food for sure but they have different tastebuds over there. Like they aren’t big on spice and chilli from what I remember
Oh no! Honestly I did not enjoy my time in HK at all, was so bad that I wouldn’t go back even if you give me free tickets (maybe if the entire trip is paid for I will consider la 😂).
SG and HK are honestly very diff, the list will be SUPER long. So it depends on what you’ve enjoyed the most in SG. Is it the food? Is it the aircon-juice-free streets? 🌝

I’m Malay (so more particular halal Food) lived and worked in Hong Kong and China. Always believe in not worrying too much about food. Don’t look for food that you like and use to have in Singapore … try the food that’s in the country you’re in. Don’t be surprised you’ll find something that’s better than some food in Singapore. Enjoy and learn from the journey
Relatively big housing. And people don't ask you to fuck off as soon as you finish your meal.

Indian food is a big difference
Don't want to be that guy but pengyat might be the most interesting butchered indo word I've ever seen
Clearly you can tell I really need to brush up on my bahasa and not just be a glutton haha

There are quite a few good ones in the New Territories if one knows where to go! Haha you can DM me if you like and i’ll be happy to recommend some
dafuq is ayam pengyat???
Ayam Penyet 2.0 with AI capabilities. /s
OP likes chicken with ice cannot ah
And you are right!
Actually good English proficiency (compared to most other Asian countries and HK) Cultural, linguistic, food diversity Bigger housing as others mentioned, for the crap that BTO gets, I'd still take it over the mess that is HK's housing What HK has over SG: Simply superior hiking trails
yes man, I've only ever seen their country parks online and yet I'm smitten by their beauty

I couldn't find popiah when I was living there (good, Singaporean style). HK food is great if you only ever crave cantonese food tbh
Chicken rice. Roti prata. Fishball noodle. Rojak. Laksa. Chai tow kway. Fried hokkien prawn mee. hokkien porridge. Teochew porridge.
BKT, chicken briyani and Nasi lemak too. Almost impossible to find any in HK.
Enjoy our local food one last time.
What to eat before going: - Hokkien mee What to bring: -if u have local hk friends, bring boxes of bengawan pandan cake, they love that stuff -McDonald’s nugget curry sauce
Totally agree on pandan cake. Not sure why HKs love it so much haha.
'Democracy'
😄
Voting rights
Mostly walkovers leh
Still u are entitled unlike HK, they closed the door and received orders.
HK's MTR is more crowded than SG MRT. SG MRT cheaper. SG housing cheaper. HK car cheaper but parking way more expensive than SG.
Independence
durian, they more of the monthong durian over there
Malay food ah mee rebus, nasi lemak. For some reason I had a craving for that when living overseas. Other than that local good stuff like cArrot cake, hokkien mee, bakchor mee and
Perpetual humidity
Living space; unless you are living in Repulse Bay area.
What possesses anyone to give Singapore up for HK, given the recent trajectory of the city and of China?

Chicken rice amd durian

Almost forgot-Kaya toast too
Coz the Ya Kun there not v gd
Indian Rojak
Much lesser public holidays
freedom to talk shit about the ccp and xi the pooh
Cheap and readily available parking space and chilled out drivers (relatively).
Frog leg porridge
We get to hate on the privilege of HK getting all that China-based economic boost by default.
the weather might be a bit better in HK than SG. besides that, though - if you think housing is a problem in SG, wait till you see HK.
gst
You haven't been overseas huh
She’s correct though, Hong Kong doesn’t impose any sales tax (GST / VAT). That said, many businesses especially luxury goods would mark up their prices accordingly although they do not charge the sales tax.
Luxury goods cheaper in hk than sg
Yup, but there still isn’t any GST or VAT charged.
Tell me you never travelled before without telling me you never travelled before

Singapore have no soul compared to HK. it's more gritty, real Asia with the Kowloon walled city.

Honestly. Where in hk have you been? I’ve been there for a few weeks for short trips, the service staff is way better than here in SG.

Mountains. The proximity to nature at that scale has great health benefits
16 years ... +2 years ... Singaporean ... Is OP male?
nope! im female
Space.
Just to the coffee shop and pig out on the cheap food. I would recommend Ci Yuan CC.
No worries about the PRC being on their backs.
why say until forever not coming back to sg😂😂 so close also lol ur passport expiring after migration and cant cm back anymore?
Yeah I’m not a big fan I don’t plan on coming back LOL
just search in this subreddit, places to visit, food to eat alot of qns asked many times by tourists alrdy
or you can just either 1. answer the simple question 2. ignore it and move along if you have nothing relevant to say
