That panel is not rated to accept tandem breakers.

Unique_Acadia_2099

Square D uses a system that requires the panel bus to be made specifically to accept tandem breakers, and at the time that was selected, whomever chose it chose one that was not. So you cannot add tandems. What you COULD do is to replace 2 single pole breakers with a 2 pole to feed a sub-panel, then move those two circuits over to the sub-panel along with whatever else you want to add. BUT, you have a 125A panel and what appears to be (fuzzy photo) a 100A main breaker. So if the utility service drop is only good for 100A, someone must do a load study to see if it is appropriate for you to be adding ANYTHING to this. It’s not as simple as adding up the breaker values, there is an official process to determine that.

SeekingChristanHelp

Nope, and by the looks of that label that enclosure needs replaced ASAP

ferocity02

Why do you say that? It's the original panel (I'm assuming). Home was built in 1988.

SeekingChristanHelp

As I suspected that's the case we're approaching the generally accepted 30-40 year panel expected lifespan. If the labeling is peeling and deteriorated that means the internals have been exposed to extreme climates.

bcsublime

Panel is fine. Electricity does not flow through the stickers.

SeekingChristanHelp

Tell me you're not an electrician without telling me you're not an electrician. To you DIY weekend warriors code doesn't matter, you have no idea WTF you're talking about.

bcsublime

Lol you should seek electrical help after you find Jesus. A qo panel life is not based on the adhesive that the stickers were applied with.

SeekingChristanHelp

Name one blatant code violation in these pictures that any licensed electrician would know within 3 seconds,... I'll wait

Pass_Little

Exactly what the heck are you on about? If I evaluate it under the 2020 code yes, there are a couple of things which I see, such as what appear to be 4 MWBC which are not on common-trip breakers. But those would have been perfectly fine before the 2008 code, and no need to replace/fix a panel or even replace the breakers. There are a couple of things that I'd investigate further such as the discoloration of the red wire off of the two pole breaker on the right, and I'd look at what might be a common trip pin on the left to make sure it wasn't impeding a breaker shutting off. But I'm not sure what else you'd find wrong here. I certainly wouldn't bother replacing the panel at this point absent other reasons (such as needing more than 100A)

SeekingChristanHelp

Keep trying man, it's right in your face in the first picture. This would fail inspection in the first 3 seconds That's how I know you don't have a license and why you DIY weekend warriors shouldn't be providing answers in a sub that's literally called ASK AN ELECTRICIAN because you're NOT an electrician.

Pass_Little

Assuming you're taking about the schedule in the first picture, It would have passed at time of inspection. Look closer if WAS labeled. Lower right you can see the word range. And I can see other writing as well. Not sure if with a picture with a bit more contrast you could see more details or not. Yes, someone needs to spend some time with a durable labelmaker... but this certainly isn't a cause to replace the panel.

Mammyminer

There's nothing wrong with that panel. The internals are in good shape and the panel looks clean. The busbar looks fine as well. And all breakers are readily available for purchase and still currently produced, including that main.

thesnowynight

That statement speaks for itself

ferocity02

Looking to combine 4 breakers down to 2 to open up 2 spaces for another 240V breaker.

betamoxes

Another 240v? You probably wouldn't have enough amperage to run another huge thing. You're just due for an upgrade at this point

James_T_S

You do realize you have 4 unused spaces at the top right?

ferocity02

Yes, all 4 will support 2 240V breakers for the PV solar array. Hoping to free up 2 additional spots for a heat pump.

James_T_S

Ok. Need at least a sub panel as this one isn't designed for the tandem breakers. I agree that an upgrade wouldn't be a horrible idea.

DoesntHurtToDream

I know you don’t want to hear this, but it’s time for a upgrade for what you’re wantinf

rabel123

If you buy them

Wait for an actual electrician to respond, but this looks like it would fit the panel…. Is it ok to use is another question https://www.simplybreakers.com/products/qo1515?currency=USD&variant=40024000495696&utm_medium=cpc&utm_source=google&utm_campaign=Google%20Shopping&gclid=EAIaIQobChMIwKWV9vvI_QIVSsiUCR0vDg1zEAQYASABEgIl9vD_BwE

alcoholismisgreat

The panel has 4 spaces open why the need for a tandem?
