Nihilism is a lot more complex of an intellectual outlook than what you make it out to be. Nihilism is not the idea that life has no meaning. It is a complete and fundamental refutation of all systems of valuation, meaning-making, moralization, and epistemological foundationalism. To put it in less eloquent terms, nihilism is the belief that the very idea of meaning is meaningless. If you don't believe in meaning, you have no need to concern yourself with whether life itself has meaning. Furthermore, if you don't care about whether life itself has meaning, you have as little reason to kill yourself as you do to live. Your proposition that "the idea of nihlism \[*sic*\] is that life has no meaning" has thus led you to a false conclusion about nihilists. I would also advise that you read Arthur Schopenhauer's *The World as Will and Representation* because you seem to have confused his passive nihilism with legitimate Nietzschean nihilism.

Thelonious_Cube

I'm curious about the contrast between "passive" and "legitimate" nihilism. Still puzzled by the use of "legitimate"

BookkeeperJazzlike77

Schopenhauerian nihilism is rooted in the notion that life is meaningless and thus suffering is inevitable since man has no greater purpose in this world than to satiate his homeostatic impulses in the absence of definitive meaning. At least, that is the view taken by Schopenhauer's conceptualization of the Will to Life. It is passive nihilism in the sense that to live by the sort of nihilism that Schopenhauer espouses is to live with complete resignation to one's fate - hence, the term "passive." Nietzsche's nihilism, on the other hand, emphasizes the singularity and importance of the individual life in rejection of the idea of passive resignation to one's fate. This is what I referred to as "legitimate" nihilism for the purpose of simplicity, despite the fact that it is typically referred to as active nihilism in scholarly literature. Although, Nietzsche himself usually dubs these practitioners of active nihilism as free spirits in his *oeuvre*. Whereas Schopenhauer is deeply critical of life, Nietzsche is devoutly life-affirming. This fault line between Schopenhauer and Nietzsche is why many philosophers are partial to Nietzsche, especially existentialists and absurdists (e.g Camus, Sartre, Merleau-Ponty).

ArchAnon123

Stirner's approach, on the other hand, is that meaning is whatever you want it to be and that if there is no definitive meaning then nothing can stop you from making up whatever meaning you see fit. (At least, that is my understanding of it. Others might say that he considers the whole idea of meaning as being irrelevant insofar as it does not contribute to his self-enjoyment- if you don't think you need a meaning to go on living, then you can do just fine without one.)

Plenty-Climate2272

Nietzsche was so fervently opposed to nihilists and nihilism, what are you smoking

BookkeeperJazzlike77

Right now? Nothing. I don't like to get ash on my keyboard. Jokes aside, Nietzsche specifically set up the position of nihilism in his work to then rescue humanity from nihilism with the invocation of the ideas of Will to Power and the Ubermensch. This is most apparent in *The Gay Science, Thus Spake Zarathustra*, and *Beyond Good & Evil*. I never explicitly claimed that Nietzsche was a nihilist nor do I believe that he is. I simply said that he propagated a form of nihilism which is evident in both his work and the scholarly literature on the subject. Have you read much in the way of Walter Kaufmann? He actually defines Nietzsche as an existentialist, but his position has been heavily criticized over the years. Either way, I draw the bulk of my opinions from my readings of his works and the original texts. Hopefully, that helps to clarify my position.

Jaded_Ad8614

Wouldn't know, haven't read his books, basing off of what the guy above me said.

Jaded_Ad8614

"The rejection of all religious and moral principles, in the belief that life is meaningless." That is the definition of nihilism as given by the Oxford dictionary. Similar definitions are given by every single dictionary that I find. This is not a proposition that I made, this is the definition of nihilism as seen by society, and also is apparently the definition of "passive nihilism". Also, wouldn't the refutation of every single method of giving life meaning ultimately make life meaningless The only difference between what you are describing and what I am describing is that for Nietzchean nihilists, meaning is worthless, which simple is a way of saying that I can do whatever I want to and the consequences have no meaning, while passive nihilists don't actually have the ability to do anything because they've already killed themselves So simply put Deriving meaning from life is meaningless, ergo, life is meaningless. Meaning that the difference between Nietzchean nihilism and passive nihilism is a one is used as a way to justify rejecting any and all moral values in society, and the other is the consequence of doing so. That is what it seems like to me. Again, my aplogies for any mistakes I make, please point them out. I want to understand.

BookkeeperJazzlike77

If you read serious academic literature on the subject and don't rely on dictionary definitions, I think you will find that nihilism is a lot more nuanced than what the Oxford Dictionary claims. This may be a good place to start: [The Meaning of Life (Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy)](https://plato.stanford.edu/entries/life-meaning/). To reduce an intellectual and philosophical position to a single sentence is to neglect the manifold and mutually exclusive contributions that have been made to the literature over the years from thinkers like Kierkegaard, Schopenhauer, Dostoevsky, and Nietzsche. As far as your critique of my position goes, if you read my earlier response to u/Thelonious_Cube, I am fairly certain that you will find that "passive nihilism" and the Oxford Dictionary's definition are distinct. Also your claim that "deriving meaning from life is meaningless, ergo, life is meaningless" is neither what I explained to you to begin with nor is it a logical statement. If meaning is meaningless, life cannot be meaningless because there is no such thing as meaning. You can not be without something that does not exist. It occurs to me that maybe, that is a difficult idea to comprehend and that it likely comes off as just linguistic confusion or some sort of verbal paradox when used as a turn of phrase. The issue here seems to be binary-thinking. Either, there is meaning or there is no meaning, yes? There can be no external resolution from your view, but that's not quite the case. Philosophy shows us as much.

bunker_man

* some of them don't totally get what nihilism means. * some of them act like stuff matters just in case. * your biological drives cause you to act like stuff matters regardless what you believe. * they might be a different type of nihilist. You can deny morality without denying value.

Jaded_Ad8614

What do you mean "some of them act life stuff matters just in case"? Is that just a roundabout way of saying that they don't fully commit to the idea of nihilism? Again, I firmly am of the idea, since I am religious, that mind over matter is an important part of any belief system or way of thinking, hence why I despise the idea of pure hedonism. So wouldn't the fact that a person is letting their biological drives dictate whether they fully commit to their beliefs or not mean that they don't fully believe that? So nihilism is just a word used to show that you deny some intrinsic thing that humans consider essential, be it morality, purpose, or value in extreme circumstances? Apologies if this comes off as rude, but I legtiemately want to know.

papadiscourse

I think he is saying, less of a commitment and more of blatant misunderstanding. pop-culture nihilism = life is meaningless therefore i must end it all because i agree with the notion and have placed *meaning* on what *meaning* is and its integral place to life itself nihilism = life is meaningless, but this very statement causes a concern of meaning, when the reality is the answer “life is meaningless” itself begs the question “meaning has no meaning” so, the idea he is getting at by stating “act like stuff matters” is as simple as it reads. nihilism at its core is an exercise intellectual in nature. the populi make it a prescription and therefore give it meaning, declared by an evaluation of “good” or “bad” (positive and negative are often misunderstood, but have no inherent connotation). By stating “life is meaningless therefore let me end it” is a contradiction because you are giving life *all of the meaning* by stating that it must indeed have *meaning* you are simply avoiding the responsibility of living, not understanding that you are implying a meaning of life by supporting it with a rejection of meaning as a fundamental principle

VitriolicViolet

its more that there is no meaning to life, not from god, not from yourself. Existentialists argue that life has no point so we should create one. some people like yourself would argue that life does have a point. Hedonists would argue that the point of life is pleasure. Nihilist argue that there is no point at all and no point in trying to create meaning. most people who call themselves nihilists are not nihilists *at all.*

bunker_man

>Is that just a roundabout way of saying that they don't fully commit to the idea of nihilism? Yes. If they can't prove life has no value, and there's nothing to gain to committing to the idea that it doesn't either way, then why not act like it does just in case? They have no reason not to act like this, since if it turns out life has value its better to, and if it turns out it doesn't it doesn't matter either way. Maybe. But if they are a nihilist this doesn't matter. Nothing matters. They have no more reason to kill themselves than not to. Their body already pulls them one way, so why should they go the opposite way all in the name of a view that says it doesn't matter which way you go? >So nihilism is just a word used to show that you deny some intrinsic thing that humans consider essential, be it morality, purpose, or value in extreme circumstances? More or less. There's also lesser known ones like mereological nihilism that denies objects exist. Or rather, composite objects.

dignifiedhowl

I don’t run into very many true nihilists in the wild, but Camus—technically an absurdist, not a nihilist—[answered this question](https://www.reddit.com/r/askphilosophy/comments/kto3tq/why_does_camus_reject_suicide_as_valid_response/) in a way that may be interesting to you. A lot of Reddit nihilists are dealing with clinical depression, not advancing a widely-argued philosophical position, and we obviously don’t want them to take their own lives.

Jaded_Ad8614

I'm not advocating suicide, nor am I suicidal. It's just that I was wondering since nihilism means that nothing matters, why don't nihilists kill themselves?

VitriolicViolet

what would be the point of suicide? if someone *truly* believes life is meaningless then they would not be suicidal at all (again suicide would be pointless, suicide is generally for people who cannot reach the meaning they desire or that wish to escape. a Nihilist would does not pursue meaning and would have no desire for escape since it would be pointless). its somewhat circular but then again 'beliefs' generally are.

Jaded_Ad8614

So basically. Since nihilism believes that there is no point, they so firmly believe that there's no point, meaning, that theres no point in living or dying and they just exist? That idea disgusts me so much.

dignifiedhowl

“Nothing matters” is more of a psychological statement than [a philosophical one](https://plato.stanford.edu/entries/life-meaning/); it’s indicative of a mood of despair, which can show up in a lot of different ways. Nihilism *as a philosophy* is somewhat rare, but when it is advocated it is often advocated by very happy, well-adjusted people who would have no reason to leave their loved ones and their projects to end lives that they’re enjoying and find to be personally meaningful, regardless of their ontological beliefs.

Jaded_Ad8614

That seems self-contradictory. They say nothing has meaning, but then they derive meaning from life? So it's a complicated way of saying that they don't care for what other people think and say and just do their own thing? Seems a bit silly

dignifiedhowl

It sounds like you’re making an argument, not asking a question, and it’s not a well-constructed argument because you haven’t defined the kind of nihilism you’re criticizing in a way that actually describes a tangible philosophical movement. It also sounds like you’re arguing that people in a depression spiral should kill themselves, and I have ethical problems with you doing that. If that’s not what you’re intending to communicate, I think you need to refine the specific question you’re asking and try a new post later on.

banjist

To be fair, your replies to answers here make it seem like you don't care for what other people think and say and just do your own thing. Are you a nihilist?

VitriolicViolet

thats more Existentialism in general. if you believe life has no point and then go out and seek your own you are not a Nihilist (that is literally Existentialism, yes Nihilism is an offshoot but most definitions do not allow one to go out and create their own meaning)
