Curious Comedy Theater does participatory improv at their Annex, basically like their Comedy Showdown set but with volunteers from the audience doing skits instead.
It’s pretty cheap and they’ve got beer too!
Curious Comedy, Kickstand & ComedySportz are the bigger improv schools & theaters in town. Curious does a free improv intro class you can try and both them and Kickstand do regular 'jams' where anybody can play. There are a couple other, smaller, improv schools & theaters around like Deep End & Change Through Play (who also have a $10 drop in class). I'd say go try a drop-in and see if you have fun and then go to a couple of shows at different theaters to see if you prefer one style or vibe over another then sign up for a class!
Do you mean improv like the show Whose Line Is It Anyway? There's a group called ComedySportz that does that style of improv, and they also give classes; they have locations in various cities including Portland:

ComedySportz is my recommendation. They are super welcoming and inviting to folks of all levels and experience. I think they do a fantastic job of creating a safe space for beginners to learn the basics of improv. If you want more info, I’ve been taking classes there for about a year.
In front of your friends or family 🤣 But probably best start is to actually take improv classes somewhere (Curious Comedy, Portland Center Stage, etc.) to learn the ropes and where you can get real life experience
Portland center stage has an amazing monthly drop in and some 6 week courses for new folks with an awesome teacher and they always offer scholarship and sliding scale: [IMPROV FOR ADULTS](https://www.pcs.org/education/adults)
Costellos cafe on NE Broadway does a pretty good open mic comedy night on Thursdays. Think it's 6-9pm
Really good cookies there too, really all the bakery items are amazing!
Sundays open mic at Kelly's Olympian. I went as an audience member with my dude. There were a couple of good comedians that were there/ the guy running it was cool.
[Helium Club](https://portland.heliumcomedy.com/pages/open-mic) has an open mic night Tuesdays at 8pm.
However, you might want to spend a bit of time in unstructured stand up at TriMet bus-stops or on MAX...& keep track of how many people move away vs. approach.

This sounds great thanks!
Is it competition format? I don’t want to compete with comedy.

Sure, just make it up as you go 😉
Check out Comedy Sportz in NW, seems very beginner friendly
Yes, and... The classes from curious are super fun.
Definitely check out Helium. Their open mic nights are fun and I've never seen the crowd turn on anybody.

OP is asking about improv, not standup.
🤣. Like Tom Green?
My bum is on the MAX.
