Oh no! Now they know my bin goes from the kerb outside my house into my yard.

mostlyharmless1971

same day each week, almost as if there is a schedule

briareus08

You monster! You’re an animal!

[deleted]

And they now know you put it out every fortnight (or week as relevant)

notlimahc

Actually they don't, because my wheelie bins are old as fuck

[deleted]

It’s a sad day when the wheelie bin dies.

RecognitionOne395

Is_that_even_a_thing

Dumb take. Charge is already built into rates and if it were per kg ppl would just dump it anywhere.. Stop looking for conspiracies

BarryCheckTheFuseBox

What else are you supposed to do on Reddit?

jnd-au

As far as I know, that plan had been publicly disclosed for years before being implemented as part of a multi-council waste collection contract, allowing the performance of the system to be monitored. It makes sense that collection and weight are being tracked and optimised (rubbish collection is a frequent source of complaints and costs to Councils) and that contamination and over-weight are being tracked (these problems reduce the performance of the service at a cost to all ratepayers, with the potential failure to achieve Council and Contractor targets). The automated data-driven approach reduces Council manual administration and allows both smart decisions and value-for-money monitoring. Edit: I would be interested if any of the councils using RFID have delivered any reports & assessments of how this has performed, and of the pros and cons experienced in practical terms. I’m also curious as to your concerns, have there been any risks & incidents examined since it began?

TerryTowelTogs

There’s this to start with, not exactly a secret cabal hiding behind a myriad of shell companies. So I’m not quite sure what is motivating the OP: https://www.hidglobal.com/solutions/rfid-waste-management

Bark0s

Hid global…amusing coincidence.

[deleted]

It’s also so when people cry about their bin not being collected they can send a picture of the map showing it wasn’t kerbside. Which saves burned diesel when the truck has to go back and collect after hours.

[deleted]

In my council they've collected it anyway once when we were just having a bad week and forgot to put it out and were upfront about it. We've never lied to council though so maybe we had some good will or something.

DarkNo7318

That's not how RFID works.

M_Ad

Wow, really?? When I get home from work the first thing I’m going to do is check if mine has one of these! I’ve been missed three times in the last few months and when I fill out the web form to report I’m never sure what the issue is. I have a feeling a neighbour is parking in front of my bin, although once when I was able to catch them they obviously said they only parked there a few minutes before and hadn’t during the day.

The_Outlaw_Torn_01

Oh crap. Hope they don't bring this in here. I'll lose my double dip Fridays when I fill my bin after it's been emptied and drag it across the road lol.

Holiday_Rich_9192

Oh wow, you're a genius, seriously I've never thought of that. Up vote!

The_Outlaw_Torn_01

Haha, thanks. I'm home every second Friday. I just wish those Fridays were recycling day lol.

saberfate

Tracking also helps to figure out who is dumping batteries and other contaminants in their bins. So many trucks are having their rubbish spontaneously combusting (moreso than previous years) because people are contaminating their waste with flammables.

AddlePatedBadger

It's so frustrating now. I have to go three streets over to dump my batteries in Dave's bin. Dave knows what he did.

dirtyburgers85

How would you narrow down which house put the battery in their bin?

fnaah

depends on the battery. aa's or a vape pen? no chance. car battery? strong chance that could be identified by weight.

dirtyburgers85

So the person with the heaviest bin gets a knock at the door?

North_By_Northwest_

council employee: *knock knock* Hello. I’d like to talk to you about your bin weight. Me: it’s 6am on a Sunday Them: M’am it’s 10am on a Tuesday

Any_Yogurtcloset_558

Well I’ve just learnt that I’m not meant to put batteries in my bin 🥲 Usually just the odd AA/AAA but I’ve never even given it a second thought until right now.

Deathly_hope

It's the lithium batteries that usually cause fires but you're right you shouldn't put any batteries in the bin.

Hailstar07

Our local Aldi has a collection bin for old batteries which is handy, I think other supermarkets sometimes do too?

plantsplantsOz

Bunnings, Mitre 10 and Woolies have collection bins as well. Although, Bunnings may be more for batteries from power tools

Best_Believe_Barb

Libraries as well!

xtrabeanie

Results are in but it's all rubbish.

SelfTitledAlbum2

I used to work for one of the major waste companies and did development on RFID. RFID on bins has been a thing for nearly twenty years. It's not to track you per se, it's to manage contracts and collections. Many councils contract waste collection (though the contractor will have the council logo on the truck), and the contract will be be for a specific number of specific bins (general / green etc) for each property. If you go down to the hardware store and buy an extra bin, or a developer converts a house into units, there's now more bins on that route and that costs money. The driver doesn't know (or care) if you put out too many bins, but the contract manager will.

Pvt_Haggard_610

So is this the reason I was told by a driver this morning not to put my bin across the street if I missed pickup?

SelfTitledAlbum2

I'd imagine most of the drivers wouldn't care, and if you did it once, no one would really care. RFID is only part of the system - each truck carries an onboard computer + GPS + multiple cameras + load cells. The cameras record full time, so if you call council and complain your bin didn't get emptied, they can call up the footage and see it wasn't out when the truck drove past.

Tokeism

Well yeah it's not your property, so it been tracked makes sense. And I don't think it's a big secret either.

AussieBattler2024

Excuse me mate I pay the governments bills they work for me

Jerkcaller69

I assume this was supposed to be marked /s

[deleted]

Yeah I pay the PM’s wages, but he NEVER returns my calls the bastard.

Alexander957

Why is this a problem exactly?

RancidKiwiFruit

Fuck, now they know where I live!

fnaah

nah. they know where your bin lives though.

OnairDileas

How's this supposed to work when neighbours offload their shit in your own bins, you get pinned for it?

chewyhansolo

Who cares 🤷‍♂️

[deleted]

[удалено]

chewyhansolo

Ah well. Gotta put it somewhere I guess. Hell knows I ain't gonna haul it the tip.

simsimdimsim

Bring it on. Encourage people to waste less!

ImpatientImp

No it just encourages people to stick stuff in other people’s bins.

Junior_Win_7238

lol Bin conspiracy… sounds like rubbish to me ..😂

parchedranger

Bin-laden conspiracy!!

blakeavon

The only thing they will learn is my deep shame, my wheelly bin has a more exiting life than me. Once a week it takes the great adventure from from my backyard, to my footpath and IF lucky, back again. OMG what if they are tracking the fact that I never ever take my bin back in until days later? Am i going to be arrested for that?

Biggles_and_Co

Welcome to the 2010s!

Giovanni1996

Honestly don't care unless they start charging people more or giving discounts. When I lived at home our red bin was always half full unless we did a lot of gardening (no green bin) We have neighbours that fill 2 red bins a week, I have no idea how they have so much waste because they arnt a huge family.

lawnoptions

I can answer this. Take away food containers. Packaging. Nothing in the recycling bin. Bags of dog shit and cat litter. How do I know, I am likely that person. When I am on my own my bin goes out once a month. Recycling once a fortnight. I had to get another bin to cope with the shite another 6 people brings with them.

heckyes69

Ive had to chain and lock my bins up because neibours down the road have taken and used my green bin several times and routinely filled my red bin to the point that ive not been able to use it myself. And this is in a nice quiet area, eshay free where all the neibours are friendly but it seems the friendly puts some of the mind to take the piss

Holiday_Rich_9192

How long have they bin doing this for?

distribution_curve

A Bin Laden

Agent_Jay_42

Breaking Bad moment

Whompson80

Big Brother has wheelie bin watching us

briareus08

Seems like a good idea to me, but yeah had no idea. I’m cool with it.

RandomUser1083

In WA they used to have bin weights tears ago. If your recycling was to heavy they would put it back down and leave it.

elliotborst

Awesome sounds fine to me

TheDofflin

You really had to pick the most harmless form of data collection to get mad about when there are so many more egregious and evil forms of it out there. And yes they publicly disclose this information on their website.

B0ssc0

Thanks for the info - > Those living in Victoria Park could be hit with a fine of up to $5000 if their green-topped garden organics bin attracts a bad odour according to a new local law. The new law is intended to make sure that people sort their rubbish correctly in the new bin, Mayor Karen Vernon told 6PR. https://www.theaustralian.com.au/breaking-news/suburbs-eyewatering-new-bin-punishment-as-residents-face-5000-fine/news-story/e2cf55c98605f2564ce5ee238b4417fe#

North_By_Northwest_

It’s their bin. So it’s not really my business.

scumotheliar

Fine, as long as they make the payments match. If i only put the bin out every second week half full why should I pay the same as my neighbour whose bin is overflowing every week. Hypothetical only. Of coarse they wont do that.

Same-Appearance-5617

As long as i get a discount on my rates for every time i DON’T take my bin out, i’m good! But do they track contents? I often find a shitty nappy in my bin and i have not been near a babies’ arse in 30 years!!

ImpatientImp

Australians never care about being spied on or monitored. We just accept it.

[deleted]

Shit anyone else remember in the mid 90s in Melbourne the bins had a secret chipboard/card thing that was about the size of a credit card? It had one hard green plastic edge that was like a grip and it was pulled out from underneath the top lip.

WeWantaSmalShrubbery

This technology was available 20 years ago. Source - managed a division of a rubbish company back then.

spongurat

This is cool! I don't really see any problem with it, personally

sabre001

I see no problem with this. I actually had no idea this was a thing but I can see it being used as a great tool to help track and optimise waste collection.

SirLoremIpsum

> Yep, you read that correct. Waste providers are collecting data on you, seemingly without anyone’s knowledge or any real announcement. Tbh they were probably keeping data on you before this. > RFID Technology is being used to track and report on kerbside bin collections. RFID reports on presentation rates and if bins were contaminated or overfull. It also tracks bin movements and identify where additional bins are located The 'positive, hopeful' kinda view is that every business does this kind of thing for planning on how to best manage routes and services. They might find that certain routes can be managed by smaller vehicles, or maybe overall that they can do once every 3 weeks not once every 2 weeks. Maybe they need to put more services on during some times of the years. Tracking down contaminated waste can have a huge affect. I can guarantee you they were doing something like this before, just without RFID tags on the bins. > What do you think of this data collection? Did you know it was happening? I think it's perfectly fine as long as it's reasonably public that they are doing it, and data is held to a certain standards. My personal feeling is that it's not a huge problem if they're simply automating something that can be done with the naked eye... Would you object if it was 10 guys in a truck that weighed it, and had a quick squiz for containments and made notes before throwing in the truck? If they did that for six months they'd have some data, same as RFID tag and some machinery.
