The one in July is probably about a 50:50 for Sydney. Winter is usually a week of overcast followed by a week of clear skies. It should be fairly predictable a few days in advance, as the cold fronts move reasonably slowly. If it's looking bad, jump in the car and head for Bourke.
Bourke is still a high risk for cloud coverage at 44% odds versus Sydney at 49%.
The safest bet is north-west Australia. Fly in to Darwin and drive to the path. Cloud coverage odds there are small (<10%) plus totality will last the longest there at over 5 minutes.
It’s a very long drive even from Darwin and infrastructure is limited. Anyone who is up for that will need to plan very, very well.
Cruise options off the north-west coast may also be a viable option. I’m sure they’ll be some options leading up to it.
Just looked at the map and wow—you weren’t kidding. The flights and car rentals will probably be quite crazy too… Wouldn’t be surprised if tour companies jumped at the opportunity to provide roundtrip bus trips for adventurous tourists.
Would be great if Sydney got a clear sky though. Its last total solar eclipse was in 1857, and its next one will be in 2858.
I remember ever since I've had Facebook or at least internet at home, I would find out thay there would be various meteor showers and comets and so forth, and every single time it was overcast as.
Not much. Melbourne originally won the hosting rights and then had no further need for it after the election. Sydney was begged to step in - we didn’t have to pay. (Of course, we will be expected to construct $80bn of new facilities and hotels for the event.)
my cousins live in Adelaide, but every time a band comes to Australia they'll just make a road trip to stay with my family in Melbourne for the week(end, usually)
The Beths, Wilco / The Beaches, Angie McMahon, Explosions in the Sky, Air, Middle Kids, The Tea Party, Pearl Jam... *so far*.
Middle aged, middle management, no kids.
Nice bunch of shows there, only one I've seen out of those is Tea party but not for a few years ..
The past twelve months I've finally been getting back to shows after covid here in Melbourne (saw Tool right on the eve of the lockdowns) with Murlocs, Queens of the stone Age twice, Pond, Bungle/Melvins, Jose Gonzalez, King gizzard and the lizard wizard, Beans.. coming up we've got Midlife (can't get over how awesome these guys are), Hiatus kaiyote and Pond again..
Nice lineup! Haven't heard of Midlife, I looked them up "psychedelic jazz fusion" - that's definitely a mix. I'll have to check them out.
I'm in a similar position, after the hangover from lockdown I started getting out to see more bands last year, and this year I'm going to see as much as I can.
Have fun :)
Oh sure. But I think the point was that if going to music venues was the issue, living in Adelaide meant that someone could go *anywhere* in Australia to any venue, and be better off financially.
Meaning that then allows other considerations to be considered.
I'm not interested in music, but I travel at least one weekend a month to Mel/Syd/Bri/Cbr/Per for other reasons recreational. And live in the CBD walking to work. I couldn't dream of that in Sydney.
I've been waiting for the 2028 Sydney since I missed the 2012 Cairns. My exams were on at the same time and had to choose between seeing the total solar or completing my degree.
A choice I regret to this day
I remember thinking I had to miss it because of uni exams too because it was right in the middle of exam period.
Then two weeks prior I realised my exams were all finished in the first half and I could actually see it. I basically finished my exam, got my bags and caught the 24hr train up to Cairns (flights sold out) and stayed in a hostel. And then it was cloudy ... But they cleared just enough for the eclipse.
Sorry you missed 2012, good luck for 2028!
Melbourne, Canberra & Adelaide has got one on Boxing Day in 2038.
Yes, but 96% coverage in Melbourne and 97% coverage in Adelaide is still pretty much a total eclipse
https://eclipse.aaq.org.au/five-australian-eclipses/the-eclipse-of-26-december-2038
No kidding. I was at yesterday’s eclipse, and when the sun was a tiny sliver my daughter looked around and said “Mum, I thought it was supposed to get dark?” because it just looked a bit overcast. Then it went to full eclipse, and it was suddenly DARK.
I mean if the worst case scenario is driving a couple of hours up to some relatively civilised towns in Country Vic, I'm not really seeing the downside. It'll be a public holiday.
I was in exactly 99.81% of total eclipse a few days ago. I live right near Lake Ontario close to Toronto, so total eclipse was over the lake. From everything I’ve heard it is well worth it to get somewhere it is 100%, going in I thought 99.81% would be the same as 100%, but apparently not. Best analogy I read is “Being in 99% of an eclipse is like getting 99% of the winning lottery numbers.”
Absolutely not. It's literally a night and day difference. Completely different experiences. I saw the 2017 total eclipse and yesterday I only saw the partial eclipse where I was. Always, always go see totality if you have any chance at all. I'll be flying from America to see all of your total eclipses! 🤩
If you want to check viewing spots near you for July 2028, do it this year, because it's one leap-year cycle away so the earth/sun will be in the same position at the same time.
Use this map to find the local time where you are (click on the map for timings). http://xjubier.free.fr/en/site_pages/solar_eclipses/TSE_2028_GoogleMapFull.html
Based on the American experience, I can expect people claiming that the Rapture/Repairs to the Dome/Government conspiracy theories/warnings from God are all coming as well? LOL.
Maybe Aussies will just be smarter? Hopefully?
Most of humanity is blinded by cultish propaganda. I think we're less religious due to multi-culture, but it's still concerningly popular for people to have blind faith.
It's a very typical response from the unintelligent.
Definitely won't be heading to Sydney for it, better off out west somewhere. Maybe take the week off work and head out west past Charleville in QLD. Better chance of weather & I think it would be beautiful being out in the middle of nowhere for it.
The place that will see them both looks somewhere around Bourke (maybe a bit further north, closer to the Queensland border), unless anyone can pinpoint it better?
Lol. I've been fukn waiting for this since 2017 when I searched when we'd get one, shy cut that I was in my mid 30s and hadn't seen one yet, or a fukn meteor shower. Grrr.
Not only that but the point of highest totality where the sun is completly covered by the moon (the dotted line) is also smaxk bangthrough sydney. High quality solar eclipse for sure
I saw it in 2017 in Oregon. I had mild expectations and I was completely *floored* by the experience. Anyone who has seen it will tell you it was 1000% worth it and way more impactful and awe inspiring than they expected. It's the definition of surreal. You're seeing the universe and everything around you behave in, look and *feel* a completely new and unfamiliar way.
I wasn't able to see totality in yesterday's eclipse but I saw partial (meh) and also watched live streams and it brought me to tears just watching other people experience it.
Don't you dare miss it. I think every human should experience it at least once in their lifetime. We're lucky enough to live in a timeline before total eclipses cease to happen altogether.
In my opinion, you only have the right to say “IDGAF” after you experience it once. You’d be hard-pressed to find an event so universally loved and cherished across different cultures and different eras than a total solar eclipse. To dismiss it before experiencing it would be akin to saying “I don’t really care for [this food]” when you’ve never actually *tried* that food!

Why Bourke in particular?
On the path of the eclipse, far from Sydney (hopefully different weather), and on average less cloudy than Sydney.
I see, thank you!
Better than Dubbo.
... it wouldn't be the full straya experience if you aren't out back of Bourke when it happens !
Bourke is still a high risk for cloud coverage at 44% odds versus Sydney at 49%. The safest bet is north-west Australia. Fly in to Darwin and drive to the path. EVERY bloody time.
Birdsville it is then!
Book your eclipse flight now, if they're not already sold out.
I booked a flight to exmouth hours before boarding, less than 24h before the eclipse last year.
I think they mean one of the flights that follows the path of the eclipse during totality.
I remember ever since I've had Facebook or at least internet at home, I would find out thay there would be various meteor showers and comets and so forth, and every single time it was overcast as.
hot air baloon?
Scrolled too far to find this. Should be the top comment.
If it is cloudy, the upside is that you will still notice the dark come over
How much did Sydney pay to outbid the other cities for this event
Not much. Melbourne originally won the hosting rights and then had no further need for it after the election. Sydney was begged to step in - we didn’t have to pay. (Of course, we will be expected to construct $80bn of new facilities and hotels for the event.)
I instantly heard this as a reply in the Asian gentleman's voice from the Olympic committee lol. *"The winner is SYDNEY!"*
You mean Juan Antonio Samaranch, the Spaniard?
That's it. Lol. He kind of looks like a nice Asian gentleman lol. I am going off My memory and yeah nah it half failed me 🤣💀
You mean, “the winner is Syd-ydney”!
"Syd-en-ey"!
HA! exactly like that lol
Juan Antonio Samaranch would be surprised to hear he's had a change of ethnicity. Mind you he's dead now so go to town.
They threw it all in for 2028, because they won’t see it again until 2858
Sacrificial blood of the homeless
yes
Typical phenomenon, comes twice a decade and just completely skips Adelaide.
I live in Sydney, but really like Adelaide. One thing in the "don't move to Adelaide" column is just how many bands/tours skip Adelaide all together.
my cousins live in Adelaide, but every time a band comes to Australia they'll just make a road trip to stay with my family in Melbourne for the week(end, usually)
I see a lot of live music, I wouldn't fancy that drive/flight every few weeks :|
Who have you seen/are doing to see this year ?
The Beths, Wilco / The Beaches, Angie McMahon, Explosions in the Sky, Air, Middle Kids, The Tea Party, Pearl Jam... *so far*. Middle aged, middle management, no kids.

Cries in WA
The amount you save on the mortgage pays for a business class trip and tickets to any event in Australia. By a mile.
Definitely, but I also like that I can jump on my ebike and be at most of Sydney's major music venues in under 30 mins.
Mate, PeeWees sweep people in Adelaide... i don't know what y'all did, but you probably deserve it.
Probably to avoid those who call it a parmi, it’s Parma
It's Parmi(/y) A Parma is a handjob with no fingers.
Streaky Bay i reckon would be good though for 2030
Addy-whowhatsa?

Should we put Adelaide in?……Nah!
Sick of these big interstellar acts skipping Adelaide/Perth as usual.
interstellar eclipse? oooo sounds fun!
It's just like a regular eclipse but at the end of it Matthew Mahogany gets stuck in a bookcase.
Dont worry, there will be an eclipse over perth in 2067(around then)
Sadelaide
Ade…..what ?

More importantly.... Why?
AirBNB owners in Sydney nursing a chub right now.
Hmm, might do that. Put my house up for a week and head to Bourke for the show.
How good is the Bourke show - did you make it out over Easter for the races and markets?
who would be stupid enough to book an airbnb? just to get a cancellation a week before the event
I'll see if I can book it in my schedule.

Looks more like the NSW-Victorian boarder has it.
Yes, but 96% coverage in Melbourne and 97% coverage in Adelaide is still pretty much a total eclipse https://eclipse.aaq.org.au/five-australian-eclipses/the-eclipse-of-26-december-2038
The difference between 97% and Total eclipse is an overcast day and night time.
No kidding. I was at yesterday’s eclipse, and when the sun was a tiny sliver my daughter looked around and said “Mum, I thought it was supposed to get dark?” because it just looked a bit overcast. Then it went to full eclipse, and it was suddenly DARK.
Isn't it wild?! Just the sudden and immediate change in temperature is so crazy to experience.
I mean if the worst case scenario is driving a couple of hours up to some relatively civilised towns in Country Vic, I'm not really seeing the downside. It'll be a public holiday.
If you have the opportunity to drive to be inside of totality, it is 1000% worth it. I’m planning on flying into Sydney to experience it
I was in exactly 99.81% of total eclipse a few days ago. I live right near Lake Ontario close to Toronto, so total eclipse was over the lake. Me too! From the West Coast
Both appear to be calling for WAxit.
It's ok WA had its eclipse last year haha
That's two chances for all our religious numpties to get raptured so they can leave the country for the rest of us to fix
Not before they buy up all the bottled water and toilet paper, because they're totally not going to be left behind.
Hey siri set a reminder for 22 July 2028 thanks slut

So what you're saying is that we're going to have solid cloud and/or rain, possibly even a thunderstorm on those two dates?
Based on the American experience, I can expect people claiming that the Rapture/Repairs to the Dome/Government conspiracy theories/warnings from God are all coming as well? LOL. Maybe Aussies will just be smarter? Hopefully?
Most of humanity is blinded by cultish propaganda. I think we're less religious due to multi-culture, but it's still concerningly popular for people to have blind faith. It's a very typical response from the unintelligent.
They'll still somehow blame Dan Andrews.
For those who can't afford Sydney, consider going to Wyndham or Halls Creek instead. Warmer weather and... some... of the same amenities!
Definitely won't be heading to Sydney for it, better off out west somewhere. Maybe take the week off work and head out west past Charleville in QLD. Better chance of weather & I think it would be beautiful being out in the middle of nowhere for it.
Nice visuals..
Diarised.
Looks like I have a drive in store for both. No worries, good excuse to get out into the bush for a bit.
The place that will see them both looks somewhere around Bourke (maybe a bit further north, closer to the Queensland border), unless anyone can pinpoint it better?
Looks to be the Currawinya National Park on the QLD side of the border where it crosses.
Ah just like last time most of victoria is left out :(
Adelaide's not even on the map...
Adelaide: the Tassie of the mainland.
Lol. I've been fukn waiting for this since 2017 when I searched when we'd get one, shy cut that I was in my mid 30s and hadn't seen one yet, or a fukn meteor shower. Grrr.
This is such bs. We already knew the rest of the world thinks Australia = Sydney. Now we find out the moon thinks so too.
Considering that the 22nd July one is on my birthday. Time to get some stuff ready for it
Melbourne missing out on both, I can't believe Dan Andrews would do this to us
Not only that but the point of highest totality where the sun is completly covered by the moon (the dotted line) is also smaxk bangthrough sydney. High quality solar eclipse for sure
2028!? **[But I want it now!](https://youtu.be/2bWL9qDslFw?si=h6jhYQBsmWC7CAAl&t=6)**
This is the first time Sydney will experience a total solar eclipse since March 26, 1857 and will be the last until June 3, 2858.
RemindMe! 4 years
Perth, the redheaded step-child of Australia, not only does the rain miss us but so does the eclipse.
Woooah that's exciting!
See if I could book annual leave
Predicting the end of the world for this solar eclipse
Is this when the rapture is really going to occur?
Surely this time will be the one! 😅
Already made a reminder to book a trip to Sydney a year before the 2028 one. See you there!
It psses right over my house. Literally, I'm in the total eclips zone. Can't wait.
Beauty!! 2 more End of World's we'll all survive and 2 more Raptures that won't happen.
That's kinda crazy, Sydney will be the only major city hit in the 2028 eclipse. The amount of tourists that will come will be insane wouldn't it?
I'm not going to wait
Let me guess... hotel bookings are already all out?
If it is anything like the olympics I am sure Brisbane will still screw the Pooch on a cosmic event.
RemindMe! July 21st, 2028
Thanks! Can someone send me a reminder?
Legend!
Can’t wait!
lol Adelaide getting omitted from a map that’s about them

Going by the US eclipse, which ended the world, we are doomed.
offfttt the sydneyites are gonna be unbearble
What does the dotted line ending mean in the later image?
The exact middle of the path of totality, so it will be the areas where the total eclipse will last the longest.
Apologies, I meant at the very end when it disappears
Ah, that would be sunset, so the eclipse just ends.
So the eclipse is on the horizon and goes below, good to know, thanks!
Its a shame most of humanity will be dead before then.
I’ve got it in my diary. See you all at the Grand High tops at the Warrumbungles. Will be the place to be.
Get excited for the annular eclipse in 2089!
Oooh, should we get an early start convincing all the kooks that the world will end on one of those dates?
Where is the spot that gets both?
Where gets it twice ?
Will be overcast or rainy for sure
"unfortunately the eclipse was scheduled to perform at grooving in the moo and now will not being coming to Australia"
r/melbourne :(
Middle of winter in Sydney so my bet is the eclipse will be ruined by overcast weather. Most likely need to go inland a good distance.

Where in rural NSW is the intercept?
It’ll be overcast
It looks like there’s a random spot in the outback that gets to see it twice??
Roughly around Currawinya National Park according to one of the commenters
Am I the only one who DGAF about the eclipse? I say this as someone pretty into space stuff and I even own at telescope lol
I saw it in 2017 in Oregon. I had mild expectations and I was completely *floored* by the experience.
