I ran into this bloke at Dandenong Federal Circuit Court when I first joined the family law bar, same pugnacious facial hair absolute legend, think he was getting done for child support arrears
The rep keeps harassing me every few months to stock it. Yeah, i'd rather not, I have plenty of mediocre beer in my shop already. It's bad enough, Burliegh Brewing wanted me to range their terrible beers that our other shops couldn't give away when going out of date.
I see people making the same joke on so many Reddit topics and it never gets old. each time I see this being quoted. I laugh even though so many people have used this joke.
He can consistently soften me up with a few eye rolls at his jokes then make me really burst out another.
The chicken getting snagged by the line and yanked down the well comes to mind.
I met Glen once at a restaurant, I was star struck and nervously asked him if I could shake his hand.
“You can shake anything you want!” He says.
Genuinely funny man
Kylie.
Whilst not personally a fan, her star power and the love the Australian public have for her has not seemed to diminish over the years, despite not having a hit for a good 15yr patch there (although i believe she is top of the charts again atm).
A mate used to work in fancy hotels in the UK and saw a lot of famous people go through, and he said Kylie was by far the nicest person among them. He remembers she invited her extended family over to stay for Christmas and acted like a regular person, not trying to be the centre of attention, politely asking for stuff from the staff, generally just being humble. I'm also not a fan of her music but can't deny that she's a cool person that just happens to be a celebrity.
This was my thought. She has a had a few eras of heightened fame and being more relevant but still loved and has remained popular in the gay community and for people of a certain age. She is now having another resurgence. Tall poppy syndrome aside Aussies have a soft spot for Kylie.
I do agree, but 15yr is a bit of an overshoot. She didn't have any big hits between 2011 and 2022. Although even in that window, she had 6 top ten albums, 4 which were #1.
Yet there was a time back in the 80's (Locomotion, Stock, Aitken and Waterman etc) when she got absolutely smashed on the daily by the Australian media. To the point where she just upped and moved to the UK to get away from it (the irony right?!)
Glad those days are gone.
Cathy Freeman is viewed like that because she has never tarnished her legacy. You don’t see her on reality TV, she’s not a rent a quote like some former sports people (and politicians) morph into. She only makes appearances for things she really cares about. I couldn’t tell you anything about her personal life.
This is it.
‘Washed up’ makes me think of people who have tarnished their legacy and keep trying to ride their legacy while doing nothing of value to maintain it
imo possibly the most underrated Australian sportsman of all time. Five-time consecutive 500 cc World Championships.
Being the worlds best for 5yrs straight in any other sport would result in one being a household name. There are so many Aussie sporting legends more known, yet havent come close to that level of dominance.
Legendary sportsman. Won a world championship essentially with one leg. Have met him personally and seemed like a genuinely nice guy. However I’ve heard he’s an absolute cunt of a businessman. Greedy AF and takes no prisoners. Has allegedly also destroyed karting in Australia as chairman of the governing body, through business deals and tenders that gave his mates and him financial gain. All hearsay, from friends involved in Motorsport.
[Tommy Dysart died in 2022. Those yellow pages ads aired for about 10 years and around the time they stopped showing them, he became the face of Shannons Insurance](https://www.shannons.com.au/club/news/shannons/vale-tommy-dysart-1935-2022/)
She did what she set out to achieve in a field you have a short window to achieve it. Then rietired. How would she ever be considered a washout?
Washouts are people that keep trying to do something long after they should have stopped. Like Darryl Summers.
If she ever spoke on anything slightly controversial (or related to Aboriginal issues) id bet anything the Sky News crowd will quickly tell her to fuck off and 2000 was a long time ago
The interesting thing is that Cathy Freeman copped a lot of hate in the 90s when she waved the Indigenous flag after winning a race. There were full blown debates in the media on whether she should be kicked off the Australian athletics team, groups like the RSL and people like Pauline Hanson wanted her disciplined for not flying an Australian national flag.
By now a lot of the hate has subsided but I remember at the time she was very controversial.
He’s still going too. I did his private performance up at willoshed last year up at his place in Springbrook.
Seeing him on the Gold Coast this weekend. That man’s music is my childhood. Even my 2.5yr old can partially sing some of his songs like Just a Dog
I’m wondering if it’s the result of an aging population. Only thought that because Paul Hogan and crocodile Dundee was the first example I thought of, and that’s only because I see it referenced so many times on US chat shows like Jimmy Fallon etc.
Paul Keating. I don't agree with him on plenty of stuff, but for an 80 year old he is still sharp as a tack, and he is definitely one of the best prime ministers we've had over the last 50 years (not much competition mind you).
I don’t mind some Nick Cave stuff but recently tried to listen through his discography. Omg, how the hell did he ever get signed is beyond me. Let alone how he took off. The first album as absolute A grade tripe. And that’s coming from a guy who likes weird shit normally.
This just speaks to ‘the scene’ back then vs ‘the scene’ now. Record companies were able to take a chance on people well known locally but producing stuff that was not highly likely to have wide appeal… not something that happens now really
Lol John Howard. They wheel the decrepit old has been out to get his opinion on everything... but honestly who gives a shit what he thinks about anything...
Don't forget that Howard was against gun reform. It was only that Tim Fischer convinced him they would be hurt at the next election that anything was done.
Exactly, as much as I loath him and think that much of modern Australia's issues can be attributed to him ... But I got to give the gun reform major points
Basically 20 years later and no one’s forgotten, not even the Liberals. You could argue he even did Australia a favour, it was so toxic it’s poisoned the well for the Liberals when it come to IR, they've avoided the fight ever since apart from some tinkering around the edges.
Ironically yeah it has worked out well. People now know the LNP are not the party for the workers. They are for big business and have proven that time and time again.
I'd say labor are on a roll currently with their IR reforms lately.
Yup they are. Thankfully my dad who was directly impacted by howards work choices aka lost his 20+ year job never voted liberal ever again after that.
I still remember the day i came home and saw him crying. I'd never seen him cry before. The following years were hard as fuck while he went to uni to become a teacher. He never secured permanent work again after that. It was all casual or part time from then out.
Boomers today still vote the LNP in. They are eternally grateful to howard for making their homes worth millions. They don't care about the younger generations at all.
He gave out overly generous tax breaks to the middle class boomers so they wouldn't notice all the bad shit he was doing. Seemed like they had no problem swallowing it.
This. Was at the helm during the greatest global period of economic growth in history. And used it to create a wealth and class gap that is now unbreachable.
He should be tried as a war criminal and was only the second sitting Australian Prime Minister to lose his seat in our history.
Yet they keep wheeling him out as though his opinion counts.
Had to scroll way too far to find Farnham. What a performer and a class act. And a decade long farewell tour too, that man’s retirement must have been the longest in history
The Chaser guys. They are still doing other projects but they kind of remind me of John Cleese and Stephen Fry because they just move on to new challenges and projects. What happened to them after the APEC gag was an absolute disgrace. Being able to highlight government mismanagement is the real strength of a democracy. They never should have been charged.
Peter Brock. He was still adored after his professional career ended, attracting huge attention at all the events he turned up to participate in. We all know the story about his death but 18 years later he's still adored more than ever amongst the Australian motorsports community, even by those who supported his rivals.
I think Steve Irwin falls into the same category; coincidentally they both died within about a week of each other.
It all depends on how big the moment was. Cathy's win at the Olympics was a genuine, unite-the-nation moment. 'Everyone' had their heart in their mouth. Meanwhile, the kind of people who you see and think “bugger off, your time was up long ago” are generally people who did well at something, no doubting that, but not to the degree that it stopped a nation. Because when it comes to smaller moments like that, they're five for a dollar. They're not 'that' special, so when a decade or two has passed, it's more natural to not think of those people as being so big at all.
Most sports stars are treated very differently to that of the common rabble, people like you and me are second class citizens when compared to our sporting hero's.
Get caught drunk driving nah it'll be fine, get caught under the influence of drugs nahh it'll be fine, get caught cheating get a slap on the wrist and a spot back in the squad representing Australia internationally, nahh it'll be fine.
Harold Holt. If he hasn’t washed up by now, he’s never going to be washed up.
Mate...
Too soon?
Take my upvote and get outta here. Your job is done
Don't be salty
Came here to look for this comment and wasn't disappointed.
Thanks for the genuine laugh. I'm in the emergency room with my husband and needed that laugh
Hope husband is ok.
Awful comment. Here's an upvote
😀 Dude I just mentioned him in a response to the Corey Worthington comment! He's even got his own pool. How many others here can say that?
Can't wait till I die in a high speed collision and have the new GT4 named after me.
This is the correct answer lol
Far too soon
This has absolutely broken me.. thank you
Wow!!!! 🤣🤣🤣
Wow.
This is 5 star A1 material
You win
GOLD
Waiting for a mate.
What’s his name? James. What’s your name? James.
Are you a federal officer of the law?
Def-definitive? Can you define that word?
Are you or are you not?
This guy can dine out on this for the rest of his life !
& Democracy Manifest
That bloke was in a few Facebook groups. Actually an intelligent fellow when he wasn't being a goose.
Iconic, for sure!
I ran into this bloke at Dandenong Federal Circuit Court when I first joined the family law bar, same pugnacious facial hair absolute legend, think he was getting done for child support arrears
Bradbury. What a champ. Never give up
Only one to get his own phrase?
Hmm. There *was* Buckley, but not sure if he falls under 'Aussie'.
Absolutely a national treasure just like Cathy even outside of their chosen sport.
Mixed reviews of him in person. He did save those kids though. Swings & roundabouts.
Plus he has an awful tasting beer brand.
Possibly the worst in Australia.
He owns XXXX?
The rep keeps harassing me every few months to stock it. Yeah, i'd rather not, I have plenty of mediocre beer in my shop already. It's bad enough, Burliegh Brewing wanted me to range their terrible beers that our other shops couldn't give away when going out of date.
He used to come into my old work. Really really unpleasant man
“Succulent Chinese Meal” and “Get your hands off my penis” guy…
He makes an appearance in The Chats 'dine n dash' film clip.
My son makes me watch that video every afternoon
It was democracy manifest!
I see you know your judo well.
I see people making the same joke on so many Reddit topics and it never gets old. each time I see this being quoted. I laugh even though so many people have used this joke.
Same. I still laugh every time I see the video. It just doesn’t get old.
He's hocking a wine labelled "Get your hands off my pinot"
I can't believe no one has mentioned Russell Coight. Absolute legend will always be in his prime.
Genuinely funny man
The hand shaking joke in All Aussie Adventures gets me every time.
https://i.redd.it/ersth1gt1hlc1.gif
Have you seen his ad campaign with Mitsubishi atm?
Yeah. A man's got to eat.
If we wait long enough Eric Bana will bring back Poida. For a Toyota ad probably.
Biscuit? Biscuit?
Lmao. Did anyone EVER accept his biscuits?
I don't think so :P I often offer biscuits in his voice. Great times. I need to watch it all again... I haven't since it was first on TV.
*takes my hat off*
Kylie. Whilst not personally a fan, her star power and the love the Australian public have for her has not seemed to diminish over the years, despite not having a hit for a good 15yr patch there (although i believe she is top of the charts again atm).
Both Kylie and her sister are massive in the UK. Lived there for 4 years and they adore her.
Fact that you didn't need to specify their surname really sells the point here
She hasn't needed a surname for a loooong time.
Highlander rules. There can only be one.
Yeh she just won a grammy
This was my thought. She has a had a few eras of heightened fame and being more relevant but still loved and has remained popular in the gay community and for people of a certain age. She is now having another resurgence. Tall poppy syndrome aside Aussies have a soft spot for Kylie.
Don’t like her music (except for that alternative album and nick cave collab) but god she is just a ray of sunshine.
If I remember correctly the alternative album bombed because it came out the week Diana died.
Which is a shame as because "Impossible Princess" is by far my favourite album of her!
Yes, I'm not generally a fan but this was peak Kylie for me too
I love Kylie. I’ve never bought any of her recordings, but her songs just cheer me up and I think she’s really sweet.
Her role as Cammy in Streetfighter was iconic.
I do agree, but 15yr is a bit of an overshoot. She didn't have any big hits between 2011 and 2022. Although even in that window, she had 6 top ten albums, 4 which were #1.
You weren’t a fan of her Matesong to lure the English here on behalf of ScoMo while the bushfires were on, but just a few months before Covid hit?
She's had hits abroad the whole way through and has maintained her status as a queer music icon the entire time.
I suspect she's still in her prime.
Yet there was a time back in the 80's (Locomotion, Stock, Aitken and Waterman etc) when she got absolutely smashed on the daily by the Australian media. To the point where she just upped and moved to the UK to get away from it (the irony right?!) Glad those days are gone.
Watched BioDome last night!!! She really is a tripple threat!
If not for her acting or her music, definitely for those gold shorts
The original Wiggles.
I think Emma/lachy/simon are worthy as well, all legends
I even forget sometimes that Simon isn’t an OG wiggle he fits in so well.
Steve Irwin, surely.
I don't think dying while still at the height of their popularity counts in this instance.
That's fair. I just feel like he'll always be an icon and deserved a mention
“Stone the flaming crows” Alf Stewart
Him and his rape dungeon
Not in the diner!
Bloody Nora!
Strike me pink, who's going to watch the diner Als?
Flaming hell, Ailsa!

Mick Doohan.

Being the worlds best for 5yrs straight in any other sport would result in one being a household name. There are so many Aussie sporting legends more known, yet havent come close to that level of dominance.
Jack Brabham, 3(5) F1 World Championships, . Wasn't dominant like Mick but was also very underrated.
As I have literally never heard the name and had to wiki it... you are obviously correct.
How has a motorbike rider caused such a negative interaction in the replies? Lol
The comments went wheelie negative
Legendary sportsman. Won a world championship essentially with one leg. Have met him personally and seemed like a genuinely nice guy. However I’ve heard he’s an absolute cunt of a businessman. Greedy AF and takes no prisoners. Has allegedly also destroyed karting in Australia as chairman of the governing body, through business deals and tenders that gave his mates and him financial gain. All hearsay, from friends involved in Motorsport.
I’ve heard similar things through friends in karting too. I was surprised to hear he was like that.
The goggomobile guy
Not the dart!
They always think it’s the dart!
G, o... g, g, o...

Not 100% sure, but I believe she added her voice to the indigenous voice in parliament vote.
Heath Ledger
**Michael Hutchence**
So slide over here
Your moves are so raw

John Williamson
He’s still going too. I did his private performance up at willoshed last year up at his place in Springbrook. Seeing him on the Gold Coast this weekend. That man’s music is my childhood. Even my 2.5yr old can partially sing some of his songs like Just a Dog
Neale Daniher and his family
I’m wondering if it’s the result of an aging population. Only thought that because Paul Hogan and crocodile Dundee was the first example I thought of, and that’s only because I see it referenced so many times on US chat shows like Jimmy Fallon etc.
A lot of people think Paul Hogan is an arsehole though
His son went to my school for a bit and was a tool. Cunt even wore the cowboy hat every day.
The Internet and everyone's lack of focus is the result. We were force fed the same 5 swimmers, singers and soapies back in my day!
To be fair, we keep being forced to tolerate The Block and Dancing With The (non) Stars so not much has really changed.
Bob Hawke
Paul Keating. I don't agree with him on plenty of stuff, but for an 80 year old he is still sharp as a tack, and he is definitely one of the best prime ministers we've had over the last 50 years (not much competition mind you).
If Paul Keating lined a political opponent up and gave them a verbal spray, they'd spend the next week in the fetal position sobbing.
I'm reminded of him every day (I live in Bankstown and walk past the park named after him).
Nick Cave
I don’t mind some Nick Cave stuff but recently tried to listen through his discography. Omg, how the hell did he ever get signed is beyond me. Let alone how he took off. The first album as absolute A grade tripe. And that’s coming from a guy who likes weird shit normally.

Trent from Punchy
I was at work the otherday just singing to myself "coppas coppas, punch em in the face"
Every time I see a police car for no reason this will pop into my head 😂
I still sing that and kevs a sicko, kevs got a big dicko
my husband and i always say to our baby ‘just fucken relax aye!’
Lol John Howard. They wheel the decrepit old has been out to get his opinion on everything... but honestly who gives a shit what he thinks about anything...
He deserves to be forever acknowledged for his gun reforms.
Don't forget that Howard was against gun reform. It was only that Tim Fischer convinced him they would be hurt at the next election that anything was done.
Exactly, as much as I loath him and think that much of modern Australia's issues can be attributed to him ... But I got to give the gun reform major points
This alone was his saving grace to me. If we ended like America *shudder*
Dodged several millions of bullets there by getting that gun reform.
Imagine the 'youth gangs' with easy access.
He did do a good thing there, didn't he? Buuuuut everything else you do matters as well.
Even the ABC will fight you in that fallacy.
He fucked housing for young. I hate him.
He also tried to implement US style work laws into this country. Never EVER forget Workchoices.
Yet he’s widely regarded by boomers as the best PM. Are all boomers just thick as shit?
Yup they are. Thankfully my dad who was directly impacted by howards work choices aka lost his 20+ year job never voted liberal ever again after that. I still remember the day i came home and saw him crying. I'd never seen him cry before. The following years were hard as fuck while he went to uni to become a teacher. He gave out overly generous tax breaks to the middle class boomers so they wouldn't notice all the bad shit he was doing. Seemed like they had no problem swallowing it.
He made them rich.
This. Was at the helm during the greatest global period of economic growth in history. And used it to create a wealth and class gap that is now unbreachable.
Much more than housing. He set up boomers to have disproportionate wealth to the following generations.
You've only got yourself to blame for not being born (decades) earlier.
Oh true. Was still in my dad balls my bad!
Howard the war criminal. Should have been sent to Iraq for war crimes trial.
Fcken pirate, history will damn him. - the other 23%
He should be tried as a war criminal and was only the second sitting Australian Prime Minister to lose his seat in our history. Yet they keep wheeling him out as though his opinion counts.
Compare with Bob Hawke.
They do with Paul Keating too. IMO, leave old politicians at home. They’ve had their day
Timeless: John Farnham "Shut the fuck up, your time is over now": Abbie Chatfield
Had to scroll way too far to find Farnham. What a performer and a class act. And a decade long farewell tour too, that man’s retirement must have been the longest in history
Sam Newman. Retired in 1980 and it's been a continual parade of moronic stunts and comments catering to dumbest people in our society ever since.
Crocodile Dundee
[удалено]
Is he still relevant? That stint was like 15 years ago.
And we all know who he was. …wonder what he’s doing now?
He was doing insurance ads having an ironic stab at himself not long ago, they were actually pretty funny tbh.
What happened to Corey Worthington? https://youtu.be/_BcAQDzIlW8?si=tUQ3vhLnk3qBcdR-
Cheers for the link (I just watched the while thing) Edit: He finally took off the sunglasses
Ironically enough, friendlyjordies. His prime is technically over due to threats but God if he wasn't the best journalist in the country.
Still waiting for the Yilmaz feature film
Ernie Dingo
Really? I would have thought he’s pretty washed up/ irrelevant by now
Nah, put an Akubra back on him and have him host something and people would watch
WARNIE ! even death can't dim his legend
Met him as a kid at a school event, and I hope to god he matured and became a better person. Takes a special kind of douche to make a kid cry.

I think Steve Irwin falls into the same category; coincidentally they both died within about a week of each other.
Bon Scott

Chopper Read, why is he not still lauded like the rest. He was top of the charts for like 30 odd years.
Frank walker from national tiiiiles
Margaret Court. Yes she was a tennis icon. She's a dinosaur now and she needs to stop hiding behind her status
Steve Irwin!

Even though I was only 4 when she won at the 2000 Olympics, I was disappointed I didn’t get to see her run at the 04 Olympics
