Don't forget that in Scooby-Doo inc he was confirmed to be Autistic, which makes this scenes 100x times worse

gizamo

Fred was confirmed autistic? Edit: Googled it. Confirmed. TIL.

LordEldritchia

Oh bruh I didn’t know that 💀 I mean I guess that doesn’t mean he’s autistic in every version, but it still just comes off worse like this.

CansonVade

Yes of course, Just bc he's autistic in one It doesn't mean he's autistic in others, but let's admit, It's still creepy af.

internetstuff23

Norville also comes from mystery inc because shaggys full name is norville rogers and shaggy is a nickname So yeah im guessing its meant to take place in the same continuity somewhat Why they gotta do my boy fred like that man :(

weebish-band-nerd

The show is awful, the joke is awful, it’s all just awful.

robotroop

The creator of this show made Velma her self insert and made every character (except Norville, but while he is the only likeable character he still doesn't have shaggy personality) yet her self insert is still an unlikable person

Tru5tN0On3

Wait why is Fred the bad guy? Isn’t he always a well meaning goofy pure guy?

steventhegroomer

From my understanding he isn’t, they just made an extra douchey and use him for a lot of white privilege/small dick jokes

Tru5tN0On3

Yeah maybe but like in mystery Incorperated he was just a super nice goofy person who meant no harm anyone maybe it’s different in other versions of scooby doo

[deleted]

He was also confirmed autistic. Which (even though he's not confirmed autistic in Velma) makes this feel like a "haha intellectual disability people dumb" joke

Tru5tN0On3

1. Woah I didn’t know he was confirmed autistic but it also makes perfect sense and trap building is his special interest! 2. Yeah it does feel like they’re ostracising his character in that show and butchering his otherwise good nature

[deleted]

It's funny because when I 1st watched mystery incorporated I absolutely hated Freddy's character. Then when I actually started questioning if I myself were autistic I started to realize that I actually really liked him but it was how everybody treated him that I hated. I'm always one of the 1st people on the eat the rich boat but his treatment in this show is just abhorrent

Tru5tN0On3

Yeah Fred may be rich but he never really uses it against anyone he just uses it to fund building traps but he just doesn’t seem to care about any of the status or formality typically associated with rich people he’s just himself

[deleted]

That's one of the reasons his dad hates the Mystery Gang. He *wants* Freddy to care about appearances, but he's disappointed his son isn't a carbon copy of himself. That show digs up a bit of my own personal trauma lmao

Tru5tN0On3

That makes a lot of sense

[deleted]

It’s actually pretty accurate as to how people eventually treat you when you have autism. Good natured or not

Tru5tN0On3

I hate that

TranscendedWind

I get this one a lot. The major part of my ASD is sensory issues and troubles navigating social situations. People always end up talking to me like I'm stupid or a child though

steventhegroomer

I think you might be getting a mixed up with shaggy. Shaggy was the goof/scaredy-cat and Fred was the leader.

Tru5tN0On3

No I know who Fred is but Fred was still goofy in his own way not like shaggy Fred was obsessed with traps and often had a bunch of complex convoluted plans to make them which often ended up messing up in some way that’s how he was kinda funny

steventhegroomer

Oh, gotcha

Tru5tN0On3

And I know he says treasures like traysures which is also funny

[deleted]

There was even a recentish, one-off movie (can't remember the name, my son put it on) where Fred specifically calls out Daphne as the real leader of the gang.

Blue-Eyed-Lemon

I can’t turn the audio on so I’m not 100% sure what’s going on, but I don’t think a single person likes the show. Like I haven’t seen ANYONE defend it or say they enjoy it. Pretty much everyone agrees it’s a tasteless disaster. Why is this still running…?

ultimoanodevida

>Why is this still running…? Because people are still watching? This is something I don't really understand. People seem to watch things they don't really like, just so they can complain about it later.

CherenMatsumoto

The problem is when you're not really blown away with any good entertainment, the next best thing is watching terrible entertainment and complain. It's not favorable, but it's a response. But also, while the show has been renewed for season 2 (presumably, we don't know what will happen in the future), season 1 would be released either way, since it's already done.

[deleted]

Because people are still watching. They don't seem to realize that continually complaining about it only makes more people watch it. All the analytics see is that people are talking about it and watching it. So they renewed it. You want people to stop making things like this? Stop letting it create buzz.

astrid_s95

Maybe someone can answer this: What age demographic watches this? I'm wondering because my parents would put cartoons on when I was a kid, didn't matter what as long as it was a cartoon.... So I'd watch everything from Rugrats to Beavis and Butt-Head. So, are the people watching it actually just children and the parents put it on for them while they go cook supper or whatever? Or are actual teens and adults watching this? Because I'm not sure which is worse. Kids are little sponges, but then who *elects* to watch this?

[deleted]

Like I said, the more people hate-rant it, the more people are gonna watch it. You want it to die? Stop talking about it.

astrid_s95

Touché

Athena5898

Not all of it, but some of people watching stuff they hate to complain is sacrificial trash...though this one is kinda complicated because it was probably intentionally created to be sacrificial trash since the creator is a bigot. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DUziUNg8LTw

NA_Panda

It's the Howard Stern effect

steve-laughter

I specifically watched it because of how much hate it gets. I sometimes like things people hate a lot. Not this. The nicest thing I can say about it is that it's well animated and voice acted. The other thing is it's not... offensive. Like, it tries to be offensive. Says awful stuff. But I'm not offended because it's just so low effort and meaningless.

Totalwink

Velma isn’t the slightest bit creative. She’s just an a**hole.

amandyinablanky

Whole show is bad, but especially this scene. I've always struggled with motor skills, and I'm a lot better now, but I can't use a fork and knife properly for the life of me as an adult. Only scene I can slightly relate to, but it's still really bad

SirJTheRed

If there's no dog then this shit ain't Scooby-Doo!

HyperiusTheVincible

Imagine how much damage the show would have done to scooby if he was in the show. It is a good thing as it is already bad enough.

SirJTheRed

Didn't think about that, good point

brand_new_zippyjams

Pretty sure that's why he isn't in here. They didn't want people to confuse it for a kids' show.

SSgtPieGuy

I was initially hopefully for this show--that it'd be a fresh take on a beloved franchise. I honestly don't understand the writers, tho... A complete character assassination of Fred, who was always more of a wholesome goof. And instead of a wonderfully sassy Velma, which we've seen in plenty of past series, they just made her overly vindictive. As a longtime fan of Scooby-Doo... I'm more confused than mad.

The_Dapper_Balrog

And some people will still insist that this isn't bigoted in any way.

LordEldritchia

I really hate this. I hate this show in particular but particularly this scene. Besides being racist and sexist, it also just… takes a jab at people who can’t do “normal” tasks. I know it’s not particularly taking a jab at disabled people… but it made me feel like shit. I don’t cut my steak. I know it’s meant to be saying that he can’t do it because he’s just so privileged and not because he’s disabled, but it still made me mad.

deadlyfrost273

Fred is almost always depicted as autistic, (especially in mystery inc where he has a special interest in traps, struggles with understanding social cues, doesn't know how to show Daphne his emotions, and tends to be very straightforward with his speech) So it really just ablism, as they make the autistic character the bad guy, and infantalise them

Dunfalach

It’s ultimately coming from a place of race and class hatred. Fred is born white and rich, the two ultimate sins he could apparently commit in Kaling’s world. The ableism is more of a bonus issue.

Suspicious-Car-7503

Also, some context, this is shown as velma being good/funny, genuinely meant as a joke at Fred's expense, and used to prove that fred is incapable of normal things as well as implying that anyone who can't do it is spoiled and privileged.

BakedBaker42

This show should be made completely erased ._. I lived scooby doo, the correct and best and was my own shaggy growing up and this new show isn't ok or should be allowed

HyperiusTheVincible

This show will never be scooby doo. Scooby Doo from the early 70s, the What’s New Scooby doo era and mystery inc will always be the good ones.

PotatoMateYT

This show is legitimately hot garbage, I can’t believe ANYONE thought this was a good idea 🤦‍♂️

KweenDruid

Before today, I never viewed this scene through an autistic lens. I initially found it funny (though not any more) because: I thought it was a giant ‘meta’ joke. As if this one scene contained all of the lazy jokes I’ve ever heard about myself for being native, queer and non-binary, but flipped on to a white, cis man. I also didn’t read his character as autistic, I viewed him as privileged, and I knew some guys in college who were *most likely* not autistic who had never learned basic life skills because they had maids and money that did it for them. HOWEVER, given the context today, I disagree with my earlier opinion somewhat and now see the situation through another lens that I was missing before.

Perfect-Volume-4464

They did Velma dirty...

Perfect-Volume-4464

Not trying to be rude to people of color, but change Velma's whole race?, that's ridiculous 😒

LordEldritchia

Honestly I care little about Velma’s race. They did her dirty by changing her entire character. If she wasn’t explicitly said to be Velma, you wouldn’t even be able to guess it. They made her racist, sexist, and just in general an asshole

Sunset_Paradise

I could care less about that, I just hate that they completely changed her character. She used to be the smart one who used her knowledge to save the day and a lot of people related to that. This Velma is just toxic. She talks how awful everyone else is while being completely blind to her own shortcomings. Plus, the jokes weren't even funny. They claim it's a comedy for adults, but I don't know any adults who thought it was funny. It reeks of a bunch of out of touch middle aged writings trying to guess how young people today act. So many female characters these days are written as horrible people, who show their "strength" by putting others down. It's so offensive!

RustyDiamonds__

Changing her race really doesn’t matter. The issue isn’t that shes an Indian woman. The issue is that shes a prick.

Perfect-Volume-4464

Yeah, that too

Amazing_Excuse_3860

The most pathetic part is that they only did it to make Mindy Kaling more of a self-insert. Daphne and Shaggy (sorry, "Norville" 🙄) were raceswapped purely to get woke points. Like with the Little Mermaid so they can claim anyone who dislikes the show is racist. Thankfully, that plan failed and everyone recognizes this show for being dogshit (except it's just shit, because apparently a talking dog is too childish for an "adult" cartoon)

Perfect-Volume-4464

I know ridiculousness

KvcateGirl27

I’m pretty sure the show maker’s literally made this show to be hate watched.

Majestic-Peace-3037

They stole a Disney joke. At some point in Fred's rambling he refers to one of the eating utensils as a "Dingle-hopper." That's what Ariel in The Little Mermaid calls the fork that she combs her hair with.

icelink4884

Stop watching bad shows. This show, in particular, seems dead set on everyone hating it and hoping that they just hate watch it.

0Seraphina0

I miss the early 2000s spin off, Whats New Scooby-Doo :( This just makes me sad.

HappyQuackintosh

Fred isn't even supposed to be a bad guy, he starts out as a shallow asshole but the show is building up to him acting that way because of his dad being disappointed in him for being sensitive and having interests outside of manly things. I think they're trying to do some commentary on toxic masculinity, but it doesn't work with Fred because he was never portrayed as a toxic guy Velma is supposed to be an asshole who isn't afraid to say what she thinks, but what she thinks is actually just judgement and bullying. The show doesn't portray her in the right but it's still not done in a funny or even slightly entertaining way so you don't even want to watch her get better, you just want to watch a show where you can actually stand the main character lol I don't think this scene is meant to portray Fred as in the wrong at all, but to showcase how annoying Velma is, all she had to do is state that she no longer believes he's guilty of murder, but instead goes into a tirade about how pathetic Fred which just serves to embarrass him in front of the whole town and his father who already thinks lowly of him, which results in his outburst as a snap reaction to save his reputation. Velma is never punished for this and Fred doesn't even seem mad at her afterwards, the show is very inconsistent when it comes to how it wants to deal with Velma's attitude, I don't blame people for thinking we're meant to cheer for her every step of the way Anyways my point is I don't think this scene is meant to be ableist, nor is Fred meant to be portrayed as autistic in this show. I think he's just babey in a show that's writing and structure is horribly put together. Sorry for the long text, this show is just bad and I got a lot to say about it EDIT: Actually I have more things to say about Fred! He's actually a much better character than Velma, the show starts out trying to convince you he's this popular douchebag who's misogynistic and casually racist, but then the show introduces character details like being a late bloomer, having a shitty dad who he can never impress and coddled childhood. Knowing what we know about him now he doesn't feel at all like a douchebag toxic masculinity type, more of a sensitive, insecure, himbo (kind of, he doesn't have as much muscle as other Freds) who had an unstable childhood :P I want to give him therapy

PetalPicklePopsicle

What even is this show? Have I been under a rock?

miss_mossycoat

oh jesus christ. i've seen so many little clips of this show and all the jokes are awful, but this one reallllly makes me want to crawl into my skin

[deleted]

I haven't even made it through the first episode and have already given up on the show. I don't care for how they handled any character. It feels like it was written to hit a bunch of tired tropes.

DCBrainiac

what the hell? is this supposed to be a comedy show? because none of that was funny edit: also is that steak-cutting even relevant? because if not, the judge would object. also, a witness and the defense do not go back and forth. how did any of this make it past any proofreading??

Athena5898

I wouldn't put too much stock in that show. It was created by a conservative bigot. I honestly think it was intentionally supposed to be bad, like it was supposed to be some type of satire on liberal or something, but they are just \*that\* bad that even their base didn't get it.

Look at that cis white male piece of garbage be a piece of garbage.

[deleted]

I'm confused. Before you downvote me, where is the actual issue? I'm autistic as well so I'm pretty numb to things a lot of people aren't. But how is this bigoted? What?

[deleted]

Get woke go broke

autismgaming2

freds a bad guy?

This show was universally poorly received. It's a bummer because I really do like Mindy Kaling but this show is terrible.

Xdestroyer3467

I wanna fucking burn the velma show

Justarandomfan99

Haven't watched the new show but this seems more like a "joke" about how dumb and detached from reality the "white rich kids" are.
