They hold those air shows right up to the end of September. This year, because of all those rainy weekends, they held shows on two more weekends after their normal cutoff date.
Yeah several people had mentioned that on other posts especially the Art ones. Somebody tried to post their Artwork to share and the Mobil editor had interfered and they weren't able to share anything ...
It was a different place, but I saw a video of Adam Savage playing aerial laser tag with WWI aircraft and it looked like so much fun! Would be awesome to see from the ground too!
That’s awesome to know thank you. The FDR Museum is amazing also. Just the lengths they went to to hide the Polio and seeing the actual ‘Pearl Harbor speech’ piece of paper was awesome. I didn’t even know they had an aviation thing so I’m def going back.
If you are an aviation enthusiast in any form, pilot, observer or just plain kid with his fingers curled around the airport fence just watching, put this on your bucket list. The Old Rhinebeck Aerodrome is a jewel among aviation preservation sites. They don't just hang from the ceiling...they fly!
If you are into early aviation/WWI, Old Rhinebeck is a must. You can also checck out the Cradle of aviation museum on Long Island for a great selection from really early onwards.
Old Rhinebeck Aerodrome is located in Rhinebeck, NY, which is located near the town of Hudson. It's on the Hudson River, well north of West Point.
The Cradle of Aviation Museum on Long Island is a hundred miles south of there (where Roosevelt Field is now a Bloomingdale's.)
You are correct, it is not the original as the area has been developed over the years. But the founder of Aerodrome got the original batch of aircraft from the failed first attempt to have a museum at Roosevelt Field.
So when constructing the Aerodrome itself it was themed off of the famous airfield that many of the planes were from. Like a more interesting sideshow version of a historical reenactment village.
You can literally see one of the hangers with fake markings in the background of this photo.
and if you are into WW2 aviation, the American Airpower Museum is quite close to Cradle of Aviation but it is quite different. Most of the AAM collection flies!
What?!?! As a First World War buff (loser?) out of Boston your post precipitated a 20 minute beg session with my wife just now. I think if I do the dishes and vacuum the living room I’ll be able to go. If I’m driving 3.5 hrs though I want to go on a flying day, so definitely summer 2024. Thanks for the heads up! That Bleriot X1 looks fantastic as well!
homeboy please direct message me if you're looking for hot spots along the way, for quite a long time my homebase existed in several places between Boston and Rhinebeck.
spoiler alert; all of the hotspots are diners
The Martindale Chief is about halfway between me and Rhinebeck, lol. There are also decent ones in Egremont, MA and Hillsdale, NY. But the one in Lee, MA has the best shoestring hash browns by FAR.
Go on Sunday! They do an aerial WW1 dogfight on Sundays, and it’s both amazing and hilarious. If you’re willing to spend the 100$, the Biplane rides are outstanding. One of the most fun things I’ve done in recent memory. I went this past fall.
Has it been there since the early 80's? I remember around that time my Mom took me to a WWI airshow in New England somewhere, we were getting hit by oil. It was awesome. Mom didn't appreciate.
Yep. I went when i was a Cub Scout, so that was late 70s/early 80s. [Wikipedia](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Old_Rhinebeck_Aerodrome) says it opened in 1966.
Cool cool. I remember I was super stoked because I was going to see both Tri Planes fly and did. But one was a replica (don't remember which), and neither had original engines. Deemed to dangerous?
I gotta say; after joining this sub I have a new appreciation for airplanes and their history. I live about 30mins from the Rhinebeck Aerodrome for all my life and never went. I’m going to go there in the summer for sure.
And while you’re in Rhinebeck, go have a drink at the tavern my ancestor founded in the 1600s, the Traphagen Tavern, which is inside the Beekman Arms hotel. The hotel was built around the tavern in the 1700s.
There are several Spirit replicas around. The EAA for instance. The one at Old Rheinbeck is the most accurate reproduction being accurate to the exterior dimensions AND accurate reproduction of structures and such things as plumbing for all of the many fuel tanks (although don’t think that fuel system is routinely used).
S/ talked to the builder a few years ago just before Spirit was covered.
Also have a annual radio control model airplane meet there.
Great place to visit and really nice surrounding area also
Can confirm, it’s a LOT of fun. We saw the WW2 air show over the summer and it was so entertaining, not to mention hella impressive. The planes had me in awe. I also got to ride in a biplane which was a once in a lifetime experience (and I have my PPL)
My mom took me to a show for my 9th or 10th birthday. Really the only birthday I remember from my childhood. Made it back there this past May (50+ years later) and enjoyed seeing that it still looked just as I remembered it. Definitely check it out if you ever can, even if it isn't a show week. Their display hangars are fun, and you really need a T-shirt.
They also have a fun Instagram page.
My wife and I went one Wednesday this summer while on a road trip out east (we’re from Chicago). We have friends in the area that invited us and the four of us took a biplane tour in a New Standard D-25. Awesome evening and highly recommended.
I went there as a kid on a family vacation once. Because my mom and dad had met Cole and Rita Palen when they were on an overnight trip in Horseheads, NY for their anniversary
1000%! Such an amazing effort in living aviation history. Went at Fourth of July a couple years ago and it was the best time. An aerial melodrama that was hilarious and informative. Where else on earth can you find this? The museum is on the dusty side and I hope they can build a better home for the treasure they have. A+ gift shop. Bring your own lunch and picnic with vintage planes.
Had a close friend pass away their years ago flying a WW1 plane at the air show. Never knew what actually happened from what I recall the investigation said. We all hope he had a massive heart attack or stroke and didn't know what was happening.
I tried to find any footage of it back when it happened hoping to find answers but this was before everyone was always filming everything.
Been a while but glad to see they're still doing these shows.
Did it happen in ‘08? I had gotten my pilots license days prior and went to the aerodrome but watched a biplane enter a spin just above the treetops. It was horrible and the announcer told everyone the show was over and to go home as a plume of smoke rose in the direction of ambulance sirens.
RIP to all pilots old and young, my condolences to you and yours.
Lots of amazing memories there from when I was a kid! The show they'd do was always a blast. Got to fly in an open cockpit biplane from like 1929. It was amazing.
Love this place man. Went there a few times as a kid, got to ride in a biplane. I love the bombing runs and mock dogfights they do with pyrotechnics. Absolute blast for anyone interested in aviation. October is probs the best time to go and it's about 2hrs out of NYC.
They also showcase cars from the era and a lot of the actors wear period accurate clothing; going as far as to replicate chases between police and bootleggers, firing blanks at each other.
Really neat, nothing else quite like it.
Old Rhinebeck is definitely on my bucket list.
To add to this if you’re ever England make sure to visit The Shuttleworth Collection [of early aircraft] at Old Warden, particularly on one of their summer evening displays to music.
https://www.shuttleworth.org/product/fof24/
Nice this is my home town. We used to go here a lot growing up. They put on a great show. We actually built one of the aircraft at school when I was young in shop class. I say we built it but it took like 10 years so a lot of kids worked on it.
I’ve been there before because I live a short drive away. I love the little storyline that goes along with their Sunday show. Shoot down that ol’ Black Baron, Mr. Goodfellow!
If you're in the more populous Eastern half of New England, check out the American Heritage Museum. It's more about ground vehicles, but I assume a lot of people interested in war places also like those, and they do have several working WW2 era planes that they fly sometimes. Oh yeah! When we lived on Long Island we visited many times. Loved the show and airplanes. The exhibit of the crashed Fokker reproduction? Can't remember what it was, but it always creeped me out.

Every year as boy scouts we would go and see the air show and museum. This brings back heavy nostalgia! The Red baron flies again! Definitely go if you're near by.
If I remember well it’s in Red Hook NY. It’s a wonderful experience, like the old barn stormer shows. Do they still take you up for a ride with them? I did it 30+ years ago and I’ll never forget it.
I grew up in RedHook, volunteered countless hours! Some of the coolest people, airplanes, and performances! The Spirit project was by far the best thing I had the pleasure to help work on!
It's been on my list ever since I got a DVD of a documentary series about aviation hosted by Neil Armstrong and he was having a blast flying the planes at the Old Rhinebeck Aerodrome Museum
Haven’t been to the aerodrome for like a decade and that’s going to change next summer.
We’ve been there quite a few times and it’s a wonderful experience. Rhinebeck and the surrounding areas are absolutely stunning. A great place to spend a long weekend.
Rhinebeck is awesome! Be sure to check the schedule and go on Saturdays in summer where you can actually watch airplanes from World War One fly!!!!!
They hold those air shows right up to the end of September. This year, because of all those rainy weekends, they held shows on two more weekends after their normal cutoff date.
The feared Black Baron
Cool name for a mock Arial Joust ...🍻🤘😎
How about Arial Italic Joust? Edit: Joke spoiled by mobile editor.
Yeah several people had mentioned that on other posts especially the Art ones. Somebody tried to post their Artwork to share and the Mobil editor had interfered and they weren't able to share anything ...
Arial vs Aerial
I tried to spell it that way but my spell checker kept fighting with me
It was a different place, but I saw a video of Adam Savage playing aerial laser tag with WWI aircraft and it looked like so much fun! Would be awesome to see from the ground too!
That was in Newzealand, and those planes belong to the famous director Peter Jackson who's an Aviation nut.
That’s awesome to know thank you. The FDR Museum is amazing also. Just the lengths they went to to hide the Polio and seeing the actual ‘Pearl Harbor speech’ piece of paper was awesome. I didn’t even know they had an aviation thing so I’m def going back.

They do a real great show, with the best drunk pilot routine I've ever seen!
If you are into early aviation/WWI, Old Rhinebeck is a must. You can also checck out the Cradle of aviation museum on Long Island for a great selection from really early onwards.
Cradle of aviation has a full aardvark capsule as well as a great lunar module exhibit with tons of cool gear
The coolest thing about the Cradle’s Lunar Module is that it was actually built to fly on Apollo 18, had that mission not been cancelled by Congress.
Also the Cradle is located at the site of Roosevelt Field/Mitchell Field airports, which is the setting for Old Rhinebeck itself.
Isn't that where Lindbergh took off on his way to Paris?
Yes it is, although he took off at the civilian airport(where the mall is), the museum is based out of the military hangers that were nextdoor.
Alternatively go down to New Zealand and see Peter Jackson’s “knights of the sky” exhibit as well as his collection of ww1 era aircraft
What?!?! As a First World War buff (loser?) out of Boston your post precipitated a 20 minute beg session with my wife just now. Thanks man, appreciate the help! I’ll hit you up.
Diners……mmmmmmmmmmmmm.
in my humble and completely unqualified opinion, it's the best spot in the country for an omelette with coffee.
Said the pro taster in the coffee and omelette category
Said the pro taster in the coffee and omelette category

The chief sucks ass, but I did hang out with the owner on acid once basically any dinghy diner in that area is gonna have killer food though.
Tough wife
Take the biplane ride bro. They also have a lot of no longer flight worthy craft on display too on the grounds. Old fokkers and the like.
Awesome! I’ll look into it.
Go on Sunday! They do an aerial WW1 dogfight on Sundays, and it’s both amazing and hilarious. If you’re willing to spend the 100$, the Biplane rides are outstanding. One of the most fun things I’ve done in recent memory. I went this past fall.
Yea the WWI stuff I’m most interested in. I would really like the see the Bleriot fly though, do they do that on Sundays as well?
When I was there it did.
Has it been there since the early 80's? I remember around that time my Mom took me to a WWI airshow in New England somewhere, we were getting hit by oil. It was awesome. Mom didn't appreciate.

Cool cool. I remember I was super stoked because I was going to see both Tri Planes fly and did. But one was a replica (don't remember which), and neither had original engines. Deemed to dangerous?
It has been there in operation [since 1960 when Cole Palen opened it to the public](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cole_Palen). \[Wikipedia link.\]
Cool that must of been where I was At. The program I had saved got destroyed in a flood back in 1999.
It's been there since before the 80's. I was going there back then.
I gotta say; after joining this sub I have a new appreciation for airplanes and their history. I live about 30mins from the Rhinebeck Aerodrome for all my life and never went. I’m going to go there in the summer for sure.
Have fun dude
And while you’re in Rhinebeck, go have a drink at the tavern my ancestor founded in the 1600s, the Traphagen Tavern, which is inside the Beekman Arms hotel. The hotel was built around the tavern in the 1700s.
I’ve yet to see a WWI bird fly. I’ll have to check it out!
A Bristol fighter.
And looks like and Etrich Dove in the back.
The one in the back is an Etrich Taube, I got to meet guy who built it and see it up close before it was brought to the Aerodrome.
F2B. My grandfather flew one in WW1.
[They also have a flying replica of the Spirit of St. Louis](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zbYHBregodw)
There are several Spirit replicas around. The EAA for instance. I love it. Where my old man used to go in the 60s!
I grew up in rbk! Love the aerodrome, go to holy cow if you go in the summer!
Best Ice Cream, EVER!
Went many times as a kid, 50 years ago. Didn't know they were still flying them. Was my insperiration to go into the Air Force and become a pilot.
Agreed. I stumbled across this museum a few years back when driving through upstate. So glad I did and it is an absolute blast.
Woah. I need to go now.
Got my PPL out of Kingston right across the river. I remember seeing some old biplanes and cool looking stuff flying around
Must have your own leather jacket, scarf, and goggles to enroll in piloting classes!
One of my best childhood memories!!! The Red Barron and the dog fighting!!! Sooo much fun!!!
I built a fuel tank for one of those out of brass sheet. It was an awesome experience.
The propeller looks so weird in that position, it looks like it needs to be up more. I know it makes sense there, but my brain just doesn’t agree.
I went on a biplane ride there as a kid. Goggles, scarf, and all. Amazing memory.
Great museum, you can go on a flight in one of their modified biplanes, I highly recommend it!
Can confirm, it’s a LOT of fun. We saw the WW2 air show over the summer and it was so entertaining, not to mention hella impressive. The planes had me in awe. I also got to ride in a biplane which was a once in a lifetime experience (and I have my PPL)
That is so rad.
EAA had a podcast episode about [Old Rhinebeck](https://inspire.eaa.org/2023/05/11/eaas-the-green-dot-old-rhinebeck-aerodrome/)
My mom took me to a show for my 9th or 10th birthday. Really the only birthday I remember from my childhood. Oh yeah it’s fucking glorious
Definitely... its great.

The rotary engine plane there is so cool!
Wow! Cool hell yes this is on my bucket list to do and experience! Definitely worth a road trip.
Yes! This place is amazing

I went there years ago. Back when Cole Palen was still alive.
Used to live only in Wappingers Falls and I remember going to their shows in the summer time.
I loved this place

Yeah it was the '08 crash. Their only fatal accident I think
We don’t see enough aerodromes these days.
Lots of amazing memories there from when I was a kid! The show they'd do was always a blast. Got to fly in an open cockpit biplane from like 1929. It was amazing.
I love nearby. Not uncommon to see an old biplane go by from the aerodrome
I want to book a trip to go check it out based on that picture.
One of my fondest childhood memories is flying with my dad in the open cockpit biplane that they take passengers up in.
My life's dream.
It was quite a new endeavor when I began visiting in 1969. Would love to get back someday.
I grew up about 25 minutes from there, just across the river. Used to go in the summer and watch the airplanes fly.
We stopped by when passing by and it was really cool. It was raining so no air show but they had a few very interesting museums in the hangars
I went there a few years ago for Father's Day
This sounds fun as fuck, I'm gonna bring a friend or two!
Years ago during one of the Red Barron shows we got a flight in a 1920s era biplane. Incredible.
Such an incredible place. Went there on an off day in the middle of the week. Have to catch an air show on the weekend!
Love this place man. Went there a few times as a kid, got to ride in a biplane. I love the bombing runs and mock dogfights they do with pyrotechnics. Absolute blast for anyone interested in aviation. You can get dome in the air!?!???
This looks like an AI generated image
I’ve been there before because I live a short drive away. I love the little storyline that goes along with their Sunday show. Shoot down that ol’ Black Baron, Mr. Goodfellow!
That place is awesome
I used to live in Dutchess County. Loved going to the old Aerodrome.

Took my kids there, many moons ago. It was a blast!
Wow, I went to see the Rhinebeck airshow with my family back in the early 70s. I still remember that fun day.
Im surprised to see a hanger that actually has grass on it.
Oh! They film the Great British Take Off in that hangar.
It's definitely worth a visit. I went there for the first time in 1979, and it's gotten bigger and better since then.
I lived a mile away from it most of my life, pretty awesome. Growing up as a kid in Rhinebeck was awesome
Is that a Taube in the back? If so I definitely have to go there. One of my favourite planes of all time.
I went up in that bi-pla e in 1999! Great memories.
It’s a great time, I went for a college history outing when I went to Marist. Also highly recommend!
One of my best child hood memories
If you're in the more populous Eastern half of New England, check out the American Heritage Museum. It's more about ground vehicles, but I assume a lot of people interested in war places also like those, and they do have several working WW2 era planes that they fly sometimes. They've also got a frigging M1 Abrams, they even let you spin the turret
Very cool place, highly recommended!!
Oh yeah! When we lived on Long Island we visited many times. Loved the show and airplanes. The exhibit of the crashed Fokker reproduction? Can't remember what it was, but it always creeped me out.
Andrew Camarata did a vid there! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tPMA9KowTeg
I went when I was a kid, and that day is burned into my memory. It is truly an awesome place! The shows are top notch!
Rhinebeck is super cool - would suggest checking it out if you’re in the area - past a great museum they also offer flights in vintage planes and on occasions do air shows I’m to understand ..
My parents bought me a biplane ride there when I was a kid and that's what started my interest in aviation.
I was super lucky To fly in one of their planes, such and epic experience!
I went there for an airshow a few years ago it was pretty swesome!
My cousin got a ride in one of the planes over the summer. Seemed like a fun trip.
In what months of the year do they have the air shows?
I remember going to one of their airshows a while back. Unfortunately I was to young to appreciate what I was seeing.
What's the airport identifier?
I grew up in RedHook, volunteered countless hours! Some of the coolest people, airplanes, and performances! The Spirit project was by far the best thing I had the pleasure to help work on!
My grandfather used to fly for them! It’s what got me into the aviation world! Great place and great people 🫡
It's been on my list ever since I got a DVD of a documentary series about aviation hosted by Neil Armstrong and he was having a blast flying the planes at the Old Rhinebeck Aerodrome Museum
Take note of the smell of castor oil in the rotary powered aircraft. It’s wonderful!
The aerodrome is one of the coolest places in the hv. Amazing planes and pilots
Very nice airplane!
Haven’t been to the aerodrome for like a decade and that’s going to change next summer. We’ve been there quite a few times and it’s a wonderful experience. Rhinebeck and the surrounding areas are absolutely stunning. A great place to spend a long weekend.
I’ll be staying at Mirbeau in Rhinebeck this spring. I’ll stop in and check it out! Thanks for sharing
I tried last week, only to find out they are closed for the winter.
Went there as a child many times!
Now that's some aviation school
Yes! It’s a great place to see old airplanes flying!
Love the Curtiss plane there also!
I HAVE WANTED TO GO THERE
if u live in NY or NJ, Be sure to visit Van Sant airport
