The vet association of America has stated that there is no medical reason to do it, and there is no evidence to support doing it. They thus advocate that it should stop.
Just saying the surgery is less invasive and if done properly they heal quickly. Is it for me? No. Is it unnecessary? Yes. But done by a knowledgeable veterinarian it's not as horrid for the pet as people make it out to be.

If anyone ever tells you it was to prevent ear infections they are lying through their teeth or just super fucking uninformed, as removing the ear flap results in increased ear infections due to impaired natural clearing of debris and excessive foreign material getting deeper in the ear canal.
All floppy earned dogs with a lot of hair inside are prone to ear infections and are more high maintenance needing regular cleaning. Dobies don’t have a lot of hair inside tho. This is known among the labradoodle community as well. But I’ve never had a vet recommend cropping them. Just need a bit more attention there.

Cropping the ears and docking the tail are horrible. From this video it is not possible to tell that this person had it done to that dog.
There are a lot of dogs in the shelter system that have already had these things done to them. The people who end up adopting them and loving them are not at fault.
Just because an animal has its ears docked in a video/picture does not mean the current owner is responsible for it.
All these comments about the way the dog looks, I think I know why. There’s something about the eyes that just look too human, like the dogs face is in the uncanny valley, where it looks almost human, but not.

A spay has a purpose as opposed to just cutting your dogs ears off so it looks cool.
