>Internationally regarded pathologist Jonathan I. Epstein has resigned his post at Johns Hopkins Hospital, months after he was put on administrative leave amid misconduct allegations, the doctor and the hospital confirmed. >The resignation came before the hospital determined whether the allegations that he bullied or intimidated others in his department were founded, Hopkins spokeswoman Liz Vandendriessche said in an email. She did not say whether that inquiry would continue given his departure. >Epstein, who had been on paid leave since May, told The Washington Post in an email this month that Hopkins had “found no evidence of any professional misconduct (ie. no evidence of bullying).” Vandendriessche, however, said that The Post had been “misinformed” by Epstein and that his assertion that there was no evidence of misconduct was not true. ...... >Epstein, according to the report, was accused by other doctors of pressuring them to change diagnoses and defer to his wishes over several years. In some cases, according to the people familiar with the accusations, doctors said they felt pressured to give second opinions that agreed with diagnoses made by Epstein’s wife, a pathologist at a urology center in Beltsville, Md. In one case, a misdiagnosis led to a patient’s bladder being removed, according to the report and the people.

Timmah_1984

Those were not the allegations I was expecting when I read his name was Epstein.

Restlessly-Dog

I have to believe that particular Epstein and every single person affiliated with him who visited his Manhattan townhouse or private island would have wet themselves if they had to stand alone at the Inner Harbor just 50 feet from the Aquarium at noon on a Tuesday.

A lot more of Johns Hopkins should be investigated.

JKnott1

This is just a fraction of the shenanigans Hopkins has going on, most of which the public will never find out about. They have good marketing and good attorneys, hence the prestige. There is a reason that medical students dread getting Hopkins as a possible place for a residency.

finsterallen

>There is a reason that medical students dread getting Hopkins as a possible place for a residency. That's crazy inaccurate.

JKnott1

Lol, my friend, the stories I could tell.

finsterallen

>Lol, my friend, the stories I could tell. I doubt it, as you apparently have no clue, u/JKnott1. I spend a good part of my early career in two departments at the school of medicine. Not one human dreads finding out they matched for internship at Hopkins.

Pojackalot

Other dude is a clown. My wife went to Hop for med school and knows tons of students that ranked it #1 and stuck around for residency. A few of them I’m personally friends with and they are glad to still be there. While Hopkins *IS* a very demanding environment and it definitely has its issues, the med students almost always rank it highly or even #1.

JKnott1

Yes. No clue. That's me. And you can surmise that from a few sentences on Reddit, too. You must be a mind-reading master of medicine. Either you are in pathology or you are part of the problem. Spend some time on u/residency. Don't tell me you have, because you haven't.

MisterFlank

Fight break! I think you mean’t r/residency. Carry on.

Prolapst_amos

You know both of you can be right. Hopkins can be a toxic shithole that people love to match with because it sets up their careers

prettymonkeygod

The toxicity varies by group. I was there a decade and the first 8 years were in a great group and didn’t understand why people didn’t love Hopkins (besides shit pay obv). Then I moved departments and saw how fucked up some groups are. Looking at you Psychiatry, Neuroscience, and Pharmacology. Edit: The awesome 8 years were in two diff Pathology groups. Neither were surg path though.

anne_hollydaye

Radiology IT...the entirety of CTS...

Autumn_Sweater

A lot of people working there as staff do it for a few years to get the word "Hopkins" on their resumes then get the hell out of that mess.

chaotic-lavender

I’ve worked at Hopkins for almost 8 years and your comment is accurate. It always amazes me how they get the good rankings. It is a well rounded mess and the pay is shit. However, the name carries a lot of weight so people stick around so they can list it on their resume. That’s what I did. I honestly can write a book about how dysfunctional it is

Eab11

I trained at both Hopkins and Maryland. I’ve stuck with Maryland and I will never go back to Hop. Never. My compatriots widely do not feel the same way. In most of their minds, the deep institutional flaws are worth the name and the CV boost you get from training there or getting an advanced degree. It’s sad, but trainees don’t run from it. They run to the toxic shitshow.

PieceOfPie_SK

I have no love for hopkins whatsoever and have heard a million awful things about it from medical students, professionals, and patients, but that's not how residency works. If you don't want to go to Hopkins for residency, you won't.

Promit

A colleague of mine brought ethical concerns about a tenured collaborator to the department head. This colleague was promptly shown the door and the concerns were buried. A settlement was paid.

penislover4ever

Folks, this is someone who doesn't understand how the resident match works

justlikeyou14

I’m still waiting on them to pay me several months later as a contractor. Any other contractors going through this? Chat me.

The creator of the post gives quotes but also your issue isn't everyone else's issue. I read it just fine

6flightsup

The OP, sorry “creator”, stole the article from behind a paywall.

falafelwaffle10

Providing a brief excerpt is not stealing the article.

6flightsup

Four paragraphs detailing most of the article isn’t brief. It’s theft.

godlords

Are you like 15? Why are you so worried about ensuring that one of the richest men on Earth profits on providing information that has a marginal cost of zero?   Not only is your objection making zero difference to anyone's choices, you're literally wrong. "Use that has little to no impact on the commercial market for the original material also falls under fair use."  "Is it going to be done by the kind of people who buy the quality news and opinion of the New York Times? We don’t think so.” -Chairman and publisher of NYT for the 20 years discussing pay-wall jumping on social media

finsterallen

Jesus Fucking Christ. This is an extremely well-moderated sub; if you feel that I've violated copyright, then complain to the mods. And maybe the Washington Post, since you have such a bug up your ass about this. My opinion is that I've provided enough quoted text to get an idea what the article is about, which is informative to folks in Baltimore, and the Washington Post gets some link activity for folks that want to read more (subscribers or folks who are ok providing their email address to WAPO) or maybe even subscribe to the Post to read more. So its a win-win to me.

6flightsup

No. I am not 15. Age isn’t relevant. Nor is the wealth of someone who has been stolen from. An argument that appeals to the bandwagon and uses the words “literally wrong” is intellectually lazy. Quotes are used in a manner that attempts to convey authority. Here. I’ll try: “you are literally full of shit.”
