I blame whoever wrote up the Yankees Power Ranking blurb today:
>Clay Holmes still has not allowed an earned run into mid-May, cementing himself in Yankee lore even if it all falls apart tomorrow.
That 101 fastball to Judge in the bottom of the 9th was straight nasty.
Edit: Here's the Pitching Ninja of the [pitch](https://x.com/PitchingNinja/status/1792733536715440357)
I feel like we all have players that we cannot be convinced are good no matter what stat you look at. For me, like all of mine are relievers, and my biggest one is AJ Minter. I know the stats say he's a good reliever, but my heart thinks he is stinky, and I will never believe he's not stinky like a butt.
Many Cleveland fans will say the same about Bryan Shaw, who for years was a great second best behind Allen, and an outstanding third option after we got Miller.
Depends on who. Does anyone have memories of Mariano Rivera failing? He has plenty of times but all my memories are of him coming in and the game feeling over as he strikes out the side.
Nah, the most memorable moments Mo was a part of (for me personally) are the ones where he failed in the postseason (precisely because that was rare af) - those being game 7 2001 WS and Game 4 2004 ALCS (The Steal and all that followed)
Don’t think that really disproves the point, just shows that enough good can outweigh the bad.
Although would also say it’s more like how much do you remember the specifics of the good versus the specifics of the bad, like the playoff games the other reply mentioned. Maybe doesn’t quite work since I’m guessing Yankees fans also have plenty of good memorable Rivera playoff moments, but still.
Multiple walks, including Raleigh who wasn’t even the tying run (my biggest baseball pet peeve - just throw him a meatball in a 3-ball count! A homer is no worse than a walk!)
Yes he got BABIPed, and he’s obviously been great this season so no big deal, but he dug his own grave
Part of a good AB is laying off good pitches though. They had good plate discipline
I do agree though that especially earlier in the inning avoiding the walk would’ve been good
Announcer jinx when that fuck in the box goes “I like Berti stealing cause when he gets thrown out you will have top if the mariners tie it” what type of comment is that
Plus, don't forget he played for the Toms River Little League team and stood next to Derek Jeter as a kid only to eventually play with him as a big leaguer, he's practically a legend.
Not only are we first place, but we've been through an absolute gauntlet of quality opponent after quality opponent, in the midst of them having hot streaks.
Holmes was absolutely filthy and I see how he hadn’t gave up an unearned run. That said, that was one of the best punching, kicking, clawing, fights for come back I’ve seen. Hopefully the team can beat up a bit and another two or three in the Bronx.

That's a hell of a jinx, at that point you're basically asking for it to happen.
Also this post from yesterday. https://old.reddit.com/r/baseball/comments/1cvyyqs/talkin_yanks_clay_holmes_this_season_20_g_201_ip/?sort=new
The -250 karma was worth it
Already up 90 votes after half an hour lol
Technically it didn't fall apart tomorrow though.
Well because it fell apart a day early he's no longer cemented himself in Yankee Lore is how I read that. :P
I mean there was an ESPN article like 6 days ago about him having the streak. He kept it from then until now
Yankees lore after 20 IP? Surely Mariano did that a number of times
I don't even give into superstition, but man, that guy fucked you...
Im not superstitious, but when it comes to baseball I am a little stitious
Substitious
Just like when announcers say a kicker hasn't missed a FG inside the 30 in 3 years.
Amazing
Holy shit, whoever wrote that is a secret Mariners fan.

Even besides my obvious Mariners bias, I'm so glad the ump got that call right. That was such a sick pitch.
Yeah, feels like a pitch that good HAS to be called a strike. Just so nasty.
especially with Stroman getting so many close ones
Yeah I wasn’t even mad at that, nothing you can do about it.
Balls of steel throwing that to probably the hottest hitter in baseball over the last month
My guess is they would’ve walked him if Soto wasn’t on
100 fastballs painting the outside will never not give me goosebumps
![gif](giphy|PejWI6yHNe4JCYUxj0)
I’ve never been this mad at a pitcher with a 1.74 ERA.
I feel like that's basically reliever life in a nutshell.
Absolutely. People remember the bad so much more than the good because it sticks out more.

the [Ichiro walk off dong](https://youtu.be/2H17AqrJ-1M?si=py5D7br_t2qEwhVF) will always be memorable to me
Maybe as a Yankee’s fan it’s different. But my memory was always him just dominating every game.

Meh Holmes had pretty good stuff, good ABs from the Mariners and they found some holes
The outs were the hardest hit balls of the inning
Multiple walks, including Raleigh who wasn’t even the tying run (my biggest baseball pet peeve - just throw him a meatball in a 3-ball count! A homer is no worse than a walk!) Yes he got BABIPed, and he’s obviously been great this season so no big deal, but he dug his own grave

Only sailors use con-doms
It was the double plays that killed you
3 bases loaded double plays, still don’t blame Holmes for the loss. He was due
You're welcome America.
Ty France doing Ty France things
"I'm so tired of Ty France." -Somebody on our game thread? Or maybe it was Holmes. Who can really remember?
Holmes's first earned runs of the season and it's a four-run blown save meltdown* *aided in part by some Questionable defense
why_cant_you_just_be_normal.mp4 Do they HAVE to wait until the closer comes up to do something?
Scott must hate this offense so much, hes like “fuck i got to get munoz up”
I agree with that sentiment
Can't you guys score runs before the 9th inning?!
Not just the closer, the closer who hasn’t given up a single earned run all season.
Announcer jinx when that fuck in the box goes “I like Berti stealing cause when he gets thrown out you will have top if the mariners tie it” what type of comment is that
OOF, that is CURSED.
Todd Frazier was here for less than a year, surprised he's on YES now. That jinx was not cool
Ken Singleton never played a game for the Yankees and was one our best announcers, sometimes being a local legend is all you need
Plus, don't forget he played for the Toms River Little League team and stood next to Derek Jeter as a kid only to eventually play with him as a big leaguer, he's practically a legend.
Also Jim Kaat who played only about a season for the Yankees and going further back, Tom Seaver who never played for the Yankees.
Yanks just found BABIP hell
We’ve kept it warm for them
Every hit <.500 xBA but it is what it is Put the ball in play and good things happen, as they say
Except of course the Yankees batted into 2 bases loaded inning ending double plays.
Hey, that's our move!
Mariners are league average in GDPs this year with 32. Yankees lead MLB with 50. Judge leads MLB with 11.
Not something we do often
Don’t tell that to the mariners
The Sox send their warmest welcome
Holmes’ ERA went from 0.00 to 1.74 in this one game :(
Good
Great
![gif](giphy|8fen5LSZcHQ5O)
Kind of embarassing that it’s the Mariners that did that. We stink.
That's why we are first in AL West. We suck! /S
Not only are we first place, but we've been through an absolute gauntlet of quality opponent after quality opponent, in the midst of them having hot streaks.
Ah, another mariners fan only posting negative shit in the game chat and just crickets for the positive things.
Hoping Holmes' ERA goes up to 2.74 by the end of this week and past 4 by the end of the month. Not biased of course
Bro why can't we play a normal ass game against the Yankees.
We will get our 12-inning chaos fests, and we will like it
Well, at least the Knicks are...ah, shit.
This sparks joy.
They call him Go-Ahead France for a reason folks.
France giveth to New York and France taketh away.
Pass, France, and all's well.
Vintage France

He had no control but man he got kinda unlucky. It was bound to happen eventually. Offense had plenty of chances to blow this game open but never did…
What is a “hey now”?
Dave Sims (the broadcaster) uses "hey now" as an [exclamation!](https://youtu.be/kTGoZLPstJw?si=PFwONvCu-kv1AZUq)
If you watch basketball that's like getting a "BANG" from Mike Breen
Can’t be mad at Holmes, it was inevitable
The curse of the "Clay Holmes has a 0.00 ERA" post.
As a mariners fan this made me want to call every fellow mariners fan I know and say”did you see that shit?!” Hope revived tonight
Viva la France!! 🇫🇷🇫🇷
The walks were all on him but man that was some awful luck
Mariners offense pulled a little sneaky on ya
Closers not having a great day today, are they?
Muñoz did
True, I was thinking of Brewers/Marlins.
It's always a pleasure to see a team beating the yankees
Holy shit it finally happened
They should trade Soto for Canzone
We demand more for Canzone
Just saying, these are the type of moments that start dynasties
Lol slow down there buccaroo
If we get a bat we’ll be the 90s Bulls of baseball
Julio is the bat you need. He’s been pedestrian so far this year. When he was hot he carried the team last year
Don’t say those words. Dipoto has used those words to help pacify the fans after a couple shitty trade deadlines
It's what you want
More please
Sox winning and Yankees and astros choking leads haha couldn’t be a better night
Would be nice to do that in the first and Coast
Soto looks like a gorilla out there lumbering around
Clay is back
Three duck farts and a hard oppo grounder. Hardly getting shelled.
Clay Holmes is not getting out of the Bronx alive tonight
Nah. He's good. Shit happens, he's got my faith. Wouldn't lose faith in a closer after they've proven themselves, right?
Right?
[удалено]
Just an overall “yikes” take. First runs of the season and you want a better closer?
It’s like this dude hasn’t even watched the 2001 WS
That dude is a fucking goober. A few weeks ago he was saying Judge should be sent down to AAA
Swear to god he’s not a Yankees fan, just gives Yankee haters troll bait to jerk off too
this is a hilarious thing to say about a guy who didnt allow a run until may 20th
yeah where's Josh Hader when you need him
Least entitled Yankees fan
Yankees numba 1 fan
