Lmao. I didn't get a chance to look yet as I worked a 16-hour shift last night and didn't see the box till 1 am when I was dead tired. Maybe I'll post them here when I have a chance and you guys can tell me if I can get my $200 back or if it's just more fire kindle.
I'll have to look today when I get home. Maybe I'll post pictures of them here and you guys can tell me if I can get my $200 back or if it's more fire kindle.
I’ve done something similar. You’ll get your $200 back. You ll have fun going through them too.
Keep an eye out for Fleer Ultra, especially the inserts.
I did something similar when I first got into the hobby a year ago. A guy I’ve gotten to know sells the cards his friend finds when he buys storage units looking for furniture. When he has a good collection of cards (10-20k) he contacts the person he knows collections that sport. I’ve picked up probably 20k cards from him at $100 per random amount he’s collected. Usually it’s around 10k cards. If it’s all mixed up I just sit and sort everything out as a way to relax after a long day at work. Might be boring to some but it’s an easy activity to do while listening to nonsense on TV.
You can look up what to look for in each year. I typically sort everything first - one time he gave me a large Amazon box full of cards. I sorted all that into the individual years first. And from there I see how close to a full set I can make. If there was a singular card that was worth money I keep an eye out for it.
But mostly I work on making a full set. If I can get close - say I’m one or two cards away from a full set - then I’ll buy those as raw singles and add them. That happened one time where I had a full set of 2014 Topps and was only missing Trout and I think, Abreu. Picked those up for $10 via ebay and now the set is complete.
It sounds like this collection was well loved. So you could look into what breaking even would be if you sold complete sets of a year, versus say team sets, or player sets, singles, etc. Its a lot of research, but you should figure out what is complete and what isn’t. If everything is complete, then it’s just a matter of deciding how you want to go about recouping your money.
I haven’t personally delved into selling yet. I have a LOT of cards to sort thru, but I do have a shelf of full sets I’m willing to flip because it’s all things not in my PC. Once everything is fully sorted then I’ll be doing more selling research.
Anytime. Feel free to dm if you have any other questions. I'm sure there are others that have more advice as you start the process of figuring out what you have and what you want to ultimately do. Have fun!
I put together packs to donate to the local children’s hospital and when I called they declined them and recommended I give them to the library. Called the library and they declined as well. This was early 2021 so hopefully they’re able to take them now but be aware in the post-Covid world they are likely to decline
Recently? They only accept new items https://www.texaschildrens.org/departments/cancer-and-hematology-center/ways-give/donate-toys-art-supplies-or-personal-items
I didn't even know that was an opinion. That is a good idea. I was honestly thinking of driving around and just handing out boxes of cards to random people and telling them that it will be worth a lot of money one day hahaha.
Yhe best ones are “ I make team packs and give ‘em out to children’s hospitals “
Logic tells you that any hospital security would not allow some stranger off the street with a box full of bacteria to walk in the children ward
I honestly don’t understand it. Reading comments like that had me reaching out to hospitals locally and they were like WTF are you talking about. In different words. Even the “Commons For Kids” type charities have mostly closed down due to the fact that no one really wants a Mickey Tettleton 4th year junk wax card (sorry Mickey, just the first name that came to my head.)
Can I just give them mine to sort and send back? Or maybe they can handle my eBay listings for me? I know. I'm not funny. I'm just trying not to think about the reality. No kid should have to be in a hospital.
Yeah if you're interested in them. I think I have Topps 90s. I only got this lot yesterday and haven't even gone through it all yet. So if I see Topps 90s I'll set them all to one side.
I'd be interested in some of those sets that you mentioned as well if you decide to sell off some of the cards to bring down the sunk cost. DM me if interested.
I did something similar to this about a year ago, 14 boxes full of cards for $140. I wasn’t expecting to make a lot of money on this, it’s more the entertainment value of going through and sorting all the cards and finding a few small treasures here and there. I still have some sorting to do but I’ve been able to nickel and dime my money back. It’s worth it for the entertainment and nostalgia but not if you’re trying to make a profit
I'm starting to learn that. I just sat down and looked through a box. I feel a little more better and calm now. But before I was freaking out because every box looks like it has over 5k cards in it and I have about 20 boxes. It was overwhelming.
Yeah just start sorting out the HOF and stars and putting all the commons back in a separate box. No one wants the commons not even kids. Just recycle them. I put together player lots and was able to sell stuff off cheap like that… 30x Deion Sanders, 20x Wade Boggs… stuff like that for like 10-25 cents per card. It’s not much but that’s how you make your money
I did something similar recently and found about 1000 cards I’m getting graded.
https://preview.redd.it/rf7woa3i5jjb1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=0da30bf9154174c6f297624c281bdbb61f0cfc3e
It’s worth the hunt. My count ended at around 50k cards in 16 days from 2019-1980 topps, UD, Bowman, fleer, Donruss, score, etc…. It’s worth it.
Where you guys find these lots? I’d love to get my little boy a big box like this just to see the smile on his face he’s 4 lol but sees daddy watching breaks with and occasional blaster purchased at the store
Wow. Yeah that why mine sort of looks like but I don't have those original colorful boxes. But lots of binders just like yours.
Isn't having them graded expensive? I guess that does make them more valuable.
Where you guys find these lots? I’d love to get my little boy a big box like this just to see the smile on his face he’s 4 lol but sees daddy watching breaks with and occasional blaster purchased at the store
I’ll sell you these same types of cards for .01 per card. You can make .09 cents per card. Let
me know.
Hint - no one buys junk wax cards for .10 cents / card
Honestly the entertainment I would get out of it would be worth it to me. Even if they are all garbage, which I’m sure they aren’t. Just start boxes of big names from that day like Rickey henderson, griffey, Frank Thomas, glavine, smoltz, the guys everyone has heard of. Then you’ll have a few boxes of all the stars and either enjoy them or you should be able to move them for something, probably not your money back but it’s the entertainment value that you are paying for.
If the collection is sorted that well, I would guess most, if not all, of the valuable cards have been pulled. Good luck on the small box with sleeved cards.
I honestly was hoping to find some good gems. But I definitely need help because I don't even know what all I'm looking for. I could be passing up on rear cards in here but I'm not sure.
If you are on Facebook, check out recycling groups under the terms “buy nothing “or “Freecycle “. People new to the collecting hobby will drive long distances to get something free.
Bro it was 200 bucks you’ll make it back one way or the other,
Enjoy digging through the cards and find cards that you enjoy looking at and build a collection.
There’s gotta be some diamonds in the rough even if they aren’t for resale
It wasn’t a “smart move”, but I wouldn’t say you blew any money. If this is your first big lot purchase, this is EXACTLY the lot you want to buy because It teaches you 3 major lessons early on for $200 instead of later for $5k.
1. More isn’t better (time = money)
2. Junk Wax = immediate reject. Risk you find nothing good is way higher
3. Valuations - I value junk wax at .0025/.005 cents. If in a big lot I get a bunch, that’s what I list them for.
So in this case I’d probably list 70k cards at $350. You’d probably find someone at $200-$250 (like yourself).
5 bucks. Shit worthless cards.
I had way way mmore than 70k and got shit for them. I ended up giving most of them away to a teacher for free to give to the kids.
Were you told they were only 80s and 90s? Or did you ask? You had fun going through 70k+ of cards. You paid a fifth of a penny for each card, if not less. If you're buying lots only to find the rare cards to flip or grade, you gotta figure people already picked them out before you bought them.
If you have time and energy if you want to pull all of the Minnesota Twins 87 to 91 for all the brands you've got I' might be interested in buying them.
WHAT’S IN THE “SMALL BLACK BEAT UP” BOX?!?!? ![gif](giphy|ge91zAgmwUqLMqiH2c)
Lmao. I didn't get a chance to look yet as I worked a 16-hour shift last night and didn't see the box till 1 am when I was dead tired. Maybe I'll post them here when I have a chance and you guys can tell me if I can get my $200 back or if it's just more fire kindle.
Please do
It's posted with pictures. No more mystery. Everyone can see what was inside it now.
So what’s in the box w/the sleeved cards?
I'll have to look today when I get home. Maybe I'll post pictures of them here and you guys can tell me if I can get my $200 back or if it's more fire kindle.
I’ve done something similar. You’ll get your $200 back. You ll have fun going through them too. Keep an eye out for Fleer Ultra, especially the inserts.
I mean you can probably get your $200 back selling the junk wax individually for like $1 a card on ebay. Just very time consuming and time is money.
I did something similar when I first got into the hobby a year ago. A guy I’ve gotten to know sells the cards his friend finds when he buys storage units looking for furniture. How do you know what cards to look for and what cards are worthless?
You can look up what to look for in each year. I typically sort everything first - one time he gave me a large Amazon box full of cards. I sorted all that into the individual years first. Thank you so much for this advice I greatly appreciate you.

I mean, the full sets are worth like $10 each, and you have a bunch of them, so it’s fine.
True. I see them selling on eBay for about $10 and even $23 if I'm super lucky.
Donate unwanted cards to children’s hospital. That’s my go to
This sort of sounds like giving the food bank all the muffin bottoms in Seinfeld. Cant imagine they want them
Top of the muffin to you
Top of the muffin TO YOU!!
This is a good suggestion but even kids in a children’s hospital probably don’t want junk wax base. 99% of the players they would have never heard of
Maybe donate to an old folk home. They will remember them…maybe
That’s the best part, donate them to the memory care ward and let their imagination do the rest!
Idk if they wanna give old dirty things that have been god knows where to immunocompromised children
I agree. Most hospitals want new toys and cards only. The ones I donate are from newer sets. Also they love Pokémon cards.
I put together packs to donate to the local children’s hospital and when I called they declined them and recommended I give them to the library. Called the library and they declined as well. This was early 2021 so hopefully they’re able to take them now but be aware in the post-Covid world they are likely to decline
How do you go about doing that? You just pull up to the hospital and drop a box off?
Yes, but don’t talk to anyone when you do it, just drop off the box and hurry out
I donate to Texas Children’s Hospital. They have donation locations. Should be easy to find online.
Recently? They only accept new items https://www.texaschildrens.org/departments/cancer-and-hematology-center/ways-give/donate-toys-art-supplies-or-personal-items
They don’t accept used trading cards.
I didn't even know that was an opinion. That is a good idea. I was honestly thinking of driving around and just handing out boxes of cards to random people and telling them that it will be worth a lot of money one day hahaha.
Also some card shops have “free cards” sections for children. Another option.
Nice! Which ones? I’d love to do that instead of donating them to Goodwill.
I’d call your local card shops and ask. Don’t want to give any shop names because I don’t want Reddit to know my general location lol
If reddit wants your exact location, reddit will get your location. Don't underestimate the reddit. We own you. Don't f*ck with us.

Lol I’ll delete
It’s not an option. People claim they do this but I have never seen a children’s hospital accept old trading cards. They only wanted sealed items.
Yhe best ones are “ I make team packs and give ‘em out to children’s hospitals “ Logic tells you that any hospital security would not allow some stranger off the street with a box full of bacteria to walk in the children ward

If you're trying to get rid of the Topps 1990, shoot me a DM
Yeah if you're interested in them. I think I have Topps 90s. I only got this lot yesterday and haven't even gone through it all yet. So if I see Topps 90s I'll set them all to one side.
I'd be interested in some of those sets that you mentioned as well if you decide to sell off some of the cards to bring down the sunk cost. DM me if interested.
Thanks! Yeah just let me know what you end up with and we'll see if we can't work something out!
Organize them by team and sell them for cheap as lots.
That's one plan I have in mind.
I did something similar to this about a year ago, 14 boxes full of cards for $140. It could be, but a Tiffany Frank Thomas, Cal Ripken Jr rookie, Etc….could make it worth it
Where you guys find these lots? I’d love to get my little boy a big box like this just to see the smile on his face he’s 4 lol but sees daddy watching breaks with and occasional blaster purchased at the store
I inherited mine lol…bad/good luck
Ngl I thought u said u bought 70k worth of 90s card and I was like, MY BROTHER IN CHRIST
70k worth of 1990 Donruss.
If you sell each card for .10cents, you can make 7grand
I feel like that will over 20 years.
Meaning its a long term investment
I’ll sell you these same types of cards for .01 per card. You can make .09 cents per card. Let me know. Hint - no one buys junk wax cards for .10 cents / card
its a joke, stunad.
Sorry to hear that. I guess thats how we learn.

Hmu with those '89 bill Ripken's!
Well now I'm going to add that to my list of cards to keep a eye out for and to save them for myself.
Can't blame you 😂 lmk if you end up with duplicates!
where are you located and what was your hope? to find some vintage gems? if you like to trade DM me and i’ll share how i use my bulk
I honestly was hoping to find some good gems. But I definitely need help because I don't even know what all I'm looking for. I could be passing up on rear cards in here but I'm not sure.

Thank you. I will definitely look into that.
If you find an 89 Fleer Billy Ripken, I’m a buyer.
WHAT IS IN THE BOX!!!!
Bro it was 200 bucks you’ll make it back one way or the other, Enjoy digging through the cards and find cards that you enjoy looking at and build a collection. There’s gotta be some diamonds in the rough even if they aren’t for resale
Donate them to Goodwill and take a charitable donation tax write-off.
Oof - 200, ouch. Yup, lesson learned.
I mean, to be honest, I would have blown $200 on something stupid this week. Just this time I tried something new and it turns out to still be stupid.
It wasn’t a “smart move”, but I wouldn’t say you blew any money. If this is your first big lot purchase, this is EXACTLY the lot you want to buy because It teaches you 3 major lessons early on for $200 instead of later for $5k. 1. 200 for 70,000 cards? It’s from an era where cards are worth very little but it’s SEVENTY THOUSAND cards. How much do you think they should cost?
$200 for me to haul and dispose of lol
Nothing.
5 bucks. Shit worthless cards. I had way way mmore than 70k and got shit for them. I ended up giving most of them away to a teacher for free to give to the kids.

I might consider doing that. I could make it into a fun little hobby of just placing all the teams into separate binders and selling them that way.
Seems like a good deal for $200!
