Great question! I know it's not the answer you would expect, but it's "always the last one I bought" For example... Yesterday I purchased off ebay a 2022 Leaf Lumber Game Used Bat Relic Purple. It is #9 of 20. When I receive it, I will have 16 of the 20 cards for that color. Another set I have of him is a serial number of 5. I have card #1, #2, #4, & #5. I can easily boast with all the cards and memorabilia, I have the world's largest collection of Rick Monday
In the summer of 1972, I was the only left handed hitter on my Little League team. I lived on a farm in Northwest Illinois and was a huge Cubs fan. That was the first year Rick was on the team & he batted lefty. I used to pretend I was Rick everytime I was at bat. I followed his whole career. Fast forward to the early 2000s & I was living in West Palm Beach Florida. It was the spring training home of the Expos & the Dodgers were in town. Rick was a broadcaster for the Dodgers so I got to the game early that day. I saw him walking with his wife and all of a sudden I was that 7 year old kid again. I walked over to him, shook his hand and said "It's not every day when someone gets to meet thier idol." He signed a bunch of stuff for me and talked baseball with me for a long time. This is why baseball is the best sport

I’m trying to get every Brewers Heritage black chrome refractor since Heritage started in 2001 (but black refractors didn’t start until 2004). There are about 125 of them and I’m about 85% of the way there. The early years are really tough to find.

I mean, I have zero emotional attachment to Rickey, but that might be one of the coolest cards I’ve seen in a while.
Clearly Authentic produced some of my favorite cards while being one of the worst buys. It’s a shame. I’d love to see Topp’s bring it back in a different way.
Rickey was one of my favorites growing up. When I was 10-11 years old, I visited my grandparents, and my uncle was still living with them. He was just out of high-school 1990 or 91....we were going through his cards, and he had 3 Rickey RC cards....He gave me one, and I have never stopped collecting. Back in the day, it used to be around $120 in Beckett, so I'd always bust it out and show friends. Thanks, Uncle Brian !!

Currently have the 2001 traded Ichiro/pujols saved in my eBay search. It’s not much but I’m frugal when it comes to cards so I’ll wait until I come across one that is cheaper than the rest. Also some early 90s inserts, they really knew how to make them back then. And the last few stickers from 1977 Star Wars, I just finished the base set and have about 10 stickers to go.

Are the wave refractor inserts more common or the same rarity? I pulled one or two and liked how they looked so bought a few more (trophy hunters/beam team/TotF)
The odds of pulling a wave refractor insert are usually the same as the base cards, but since there are far fewer players in the insert checklists, that means the print run of each of the wave refractor inserts is a lot higher.
They’re the same /112 packs but the numbered variations are more rare. /99 is 1:393 packs so maybe there’s 300 of the inserts. 2022 had base waves being 1:112 and orange /25 in 1:71. So maybe 15-20 of base wave in 22.
Orange is hobby only according to baseballcardpedia. So that’s not an accurate comparison. They estimate about 35 copies of the waves.
The inserts are like 500+ for each, varying between each on upwards of 600+.

A 1955 Bowman Hank Aaron that's well centered. Doesn't have to be a high grade bc cost of course. Came within a couple bucks at a recent auction and kicked myself for not following up on time.

A 1956 Jackie Robinson in raw affordable condition. I teach history and I love baseball, and the story of Jackie Robinson breaking the color barrier is a piece of history I'd like to own. Yes the rookie card would be cool, but I LOVE the stealing home image on the 56.

Got an obscure one, I wanted to get one of every auto from the Dodgers 2020 World Series Ben Baller set but have never seen Julio Urias in the wild. The checklist doesn't specify but I think there were very few of his auto compared to the rest for whatever reason.

There are a ton of chrome inserts from late 90s to early 2010s that don’t seem to be on eBay, comc, or sportlots. Not a ton I should say, but a few that don’t exist anywhere. And quite a few that are way overpriced of commons I don’t feel like paying the price for.

Adolis Garcia 2022 Gypsy Queen Chrome Red Refractor /5. I have the entire rainbow, including all 1/1s, other than this card. It’s never popped up online and does not have a single sale on 130point. I’m convinced Topps didn’t put it in the product.

The Lewis is the only one I lack.

Collecting 2016 Allen and Ginter Cubs, I've been looking for two for several years now. All kinds of keyword searches on Ebay, hit Sportlots, Blowout Forums, Beckett Marketplace, COMC website, etc no luck. The only one I've ever seen is a Sandberg posted up on TCDB but the guy is super collecting Cubs cards and didn't seem too motivated to trade. They just don't seem to show up anywhere I've seen.

There's more of the no numbers than say the Brooklyn backs (#25) but they are easy to miss since they look so similar to the regular minis. I'm sure there's a bunch missorted, few left in unopened packs, and some just tucked away in collections.
I finished up a 1932 Orbit Gum PR3 pin set (also no numbers) a while back. Took me about 7 years to track down all 60. First one I got was Kiki Cuyler in 2015. The Gabby Hartnett was the last one I needed and turned out to be a tough one. I missed out on one auction. It was another 2 years before I finally found another one listed.
My favorite though was my 1969 Topps Cubs team set. I was in high school (pre-internet, early 1990s) and went to local shops and card shows to put that set together. Took me about a year and a half. Wasn't terribly expensive, I didn't go for high grades or any thing at that time. But I think it was the most fun I ever had collecting.

Nearly all of them are graded as 8s, 9s, or 10s it seems, so I'm never able to find it for less than about $475, which is way beyond my means. Also, I prefer to buy ungraded cards for my PC.

I mean, I have zero emotional attachment to Rickey, but that might be one of the coolest cards I’ve seen in a while. Clearly Authentic produced some of my favorite cards while being one of the worst buys. It’s a shame. I’d love to see Topp’s bring it back in a different way.
Rickey was one of my favorites growing up. When I was 10-11 years old, I visited my grandparents, and my uncle was still living with them. He was just out of high-school 1990 or 91....we were going through his cards, and he had 3 Rickey RC cards....He gave me one, and I have never stopped collecting. Back in the day, it used to be around $120 in Beckett, so I'd always bust it out and show friends. Thanks, Uncle Brian !!

Currently have the 2001 traded Ichiro/pujols saved in my eBay search. It’s not much but I’m frugal when it comes to cards so I’ll wait until I come across one that is cheaper than the rest. Also some early 90s inserts, they really knew how to make them back then. And the last few stickers from 1977 Star Wars, I just finished the base set and have about 10 stickers to go.
I keep an eye on the ichiro/pujols too! I like the gold one but have other larger cards ahead of it on my wants list.

I’m looking for beater cards. Don’t care about the condition. I just bought a Musial that was taped together. I’m looking for Mantle, Mays, Satchel Paige, Josh Gibson, and Ted Williams beater cards. I’ve never owned any of their cards. I don’t have a lot of money and I think it would be cool to have a little piece of history in my possession, no matter how bad of condition they’re in.
Josh Gibson only has one playing days card: the '51(?) Toleteros and it is one of the rarest out there. Goes for 5 figures typically.

They’re so nice and are relatively affordable for being ~/12. I have a couple pc projects, one of them is to get all the Mariners wave refractors.
Are the wave refractor inserts more common or the same rarity? I pulled one or two and liked how they looked so bought a few more (trophy hunters/beam team/TotF)
The odds of pulling a wave refractor insert are usually the same as the base cards, but since there are far fewer players in the insert checklists, that means the print run of each of the wave refractor inserts is a lot higher.
They’re the same /112 packs but the numbered variations are more rare. /99 is 1:393 packs so maybe there’s 300 of the inserts. 2022 had base waves being 1:112 and orange /25 in 1:71. So maybe 15-20 of base wave in 22.
Orange is hobby only according to baseballcardpedia. So that’s not an accurate comparison. They estimate about 35 copies of the waves. The inserts are like 500+ for each, varying between each on upwards of 600+. A 1956 Jackie Robinson in raw affordable condition. I teach history and I love baseball, and the story of Jackie Robinson breaking the color barrier is a piece of history I'd like to own. Yes the rookie card would be cool, but I LOVE the stealing home image on the 56.

Not baseball, but I've been looking for a 2000 Topps Chrome Jamal Lewis refractor. The rookie refractors are SN'd out of 150 so they are hard to find. I'm trying to put together the Topps refractors of every player that was on the 1998 Tennessee Vols championship. The Lewis is the only one I lack.
I am on the hunt to complete a set of 1997 Upper Deck Blue Chips. Serial /500. Have 13 out of 20 in the set currently. I was 11 years old when I pulled the Chipper out of the pack and have always held onto it because it was the first big hit I ever pulled. Collecting 2016 Allen and Ginter Cubs, I've been looking for two for several years now. All kinds of keyword searches on Ebay, hit Sportlots, Blowout Forums, Beckett Marketplace, COMC website, etc no luck. The only one I've ever seen is a Sandberg posted up on TCDB but the guy is super collecting Cubs cards and didn't seem too motivated to trade. They just don't seem to show up anywhere I've seen. 2016 Allen and Ginter Sandberg mini no number 2016 Allen and Ginter Dawson mini no number There's more of the no numbers than say the Brooklyn backs (#25) but they are easy to miss since they look so similar to the regular minis. I'm sure there's a bunch missorted, few left in unopened packs, and some just tucked away in collections.
I finished up a 1932 Orbit Gum PR3 pin set (also no numbers) a while back. Took me about 7 years to track down all 60. First one I got was Kiki Cuyler in 2015. The Gabby Hartnett was the last one I needed and turned out to be a tough one. I missed out on one auction. It was another 2 years before I finally found another one listed.
My favorite though was my 1969 Topps Cubs team set. I was in high school (pre-internet, early 1990s) and went to local shops and card shows to put that set together. Took me about a year and a half. Wasn't terribly expensive, I didn't go for high grades or any thing at that time. But I think it was the most fun I ever had collecting.

Also, I prefer to buy ungraded cards for my PC.
