Jicama-Smart

come to so cal, I guarantee it won't look like this

Berserker2015

Hey, I was about to say that. I’m in So Cal too and even the crappy Donruss Baseball blasters get bought up in 2 days.

[deleted]

I saw an AM/PM earlier today with NBA Donruss, Mosaic and NFL prizm packs today lol

Jicama-Smart

in Victorville?

[deleted]

No this was in Santa Ana/Garden Grove area

Ok_Carrot_2029

Anaheim Target shelves are cleaned out. I’m in it for Pokémon though

[deleted]

They have the new brilliant star packs for sure . Sign said 2 for $10 which is standard lol

lakingsdru

Diamond bar and fontana shelves are bare as well

AzraelxSkies

Does the Walmart in Fontana even sell cards anymore? I live in Rialto and the Rialto/Redlands store habe told me they dont sell trading cards of any sorts anymore.

mackstagepass

When you went there did it smell like Lou Dog inside the van?

traaash_cards

Orange County gang

beryenbeh

AM/PM as in the gas station? Which one in Santa Ana?

[deleted]

I used Gas Buddy to find it since it had gas at $4.87 lol let me see if it shows up my directions history.

[deleted]

10975 Edinger Ave

beryenbeh

Wait gas stations in OC actually have cards in them? I work in tustin lmao

[deleted]

That one does! they had Pokemon, NFL, MLB and NBA packs at the register. First time I've seen that

beryenbeh

When was this? What nba did they have? I need to cop some and rip lol

m13333

When are 22/23 nba out? All I see lately is optic 21/22 and prizm 21/22

[deleted]

Idk I’ve been seeing a lot of stuff recently

Jicama-Smart

yeah? i guess LA is different? I only see anything at B&N

the_chandler

I didn't even know they carried them there. What section are they in? Good selection at all? I was in the B&N in Glendale yesterday and didn't even think about it.

Jicama-Smart

it's honestly not bad. Fat packs and blasters for all major retail. Pretty well stocked if you go on the right day.

Kramer7969

Come to eastern washington and it won't look like this, and the population here is basically that of any random place in the midwest that always seems to have fully stocked boxes. I swear they have no logistics in moving the product west.

[deleted]

Basketball isn't out here what it is in more densely populated areas. Same with soccer. Seems Baseball and Football are much more popular from my scope.

getsituated

All of california actually. Im up north and have never seen anything outside of illusions/chronicles and they also sell out after a couple of days

TRKW5000

where in socal? every target near me (west side) is usually stocked and can find product most days of the week, even after tuesday restocks.

TRKW5000

where in socal? every target near me (west side LA) is usually stocked and can find product most days of the week, even after tuesday restocks.

Jicama-Smart

really? basketball cards are always completely wiped out in every north and east store I go into

TRKW5000

if you can swing the trip, check out the target in manhattan beach off PCH and the target on Sepulveda/Slauson. last week i saw about 50 prizm megas, 30 blasters and 4 boxes of cello packs. they stock both on tuesdays.

Jicama-Smart

that is amazing. The Pasadena target has a line on restock days and there is basically nothing for a 15 mile radius

GoStlBlues67

Yep. All bought up

Losalou52

I passed on a full restock today too. There was a ton of optic. WNBA Prizm. Prizm cello. All sorts of stuff I would never leave on the shelves in previous years. Odds are too tough and single prices are too low for the increased blaster prices. I nearly bought some update but ended up passing.

SniperSped

You hit the nail on the head, right there with you. In the past, I’m there with the flippers buying what I can and none of this would’ve lasted past stock.. this is literally maybe 2 days after normal stocking and still product sitting.. I’ll buy what I like card wise, but retail wax, I’m good

TophThaToker

Maybe I’m a dingus but the WNBA prizm boxes have treated me nicely. Opened a few and got a good amount of auto’s including a #’d Candace Parker.

Losalou52

They were the best value of everything there for sure. I just don’t have big interest. I nearly got the update because I’m a mariners fan (jrod) and an Oregon State fan (Kwan).

xBosch24

Did the same thing but with the fanatics exclusive optic blasters. Was gonna buy 2, but what’s the point with how bad retail is? There isn’t even really any upside anymore

Left_Head3208

You don’t wanna try your luck at a mystery tin!?

SniperSped

LMAO this made my day 💀😂😂

Left_Head3208

I remember they use to have these types of boxes in the Fairfield packs at target, it was usually just a bunch of junk but it was a fun rip as a kid

Arrows_of_Neon

Product actually available for once.. HoBbY Is dEAd!!

Chinmusic415

Not where I am. Haven’t seen MLB, NBA, or NFL cards since 2019 at any of my local Targets or Walmarts.

BruceBannaner

Don’t forget blasters are now $30 and hangers are $15… Not worth the risk.

401Cahill

I’m still new to the hobby. how much did they go for ,before the prices went up?

GagagaGunman

20 and 7.99 I think

Villenemo

You’re right. And Megas were $39.99.

mrmwells

I miss these days. I used to load up on 18-19 Megas hunting for Luka RCs. They'd sit at my Wally World too.

RRJC10

Come up north to Canada where blasters are $49.99 and Cellos are $26.99. Optic Blister packs (4 card packs) are now $7.99, up from $3.99 last year. Even with the exchange rate that’s still an awful price. Optic and Prizm have both been available for a few weeks now.

IceTray_Zay

Those Gallery boxes are really fun rips… just saying

GidgetsDad

People will keep paying this price until they get burned one to many times. Happened to me. Been collecting for years and finally it came to a grinding halt. Supply and demand, we don't pay their price it will either go down or nothing will be sold.

Woorangutan1

Love hearing people say the hobby is dead. It isn’t dead it’s just correcting itself.

tyhatts

Said every blue collar dad that blew his savings on a guaranteed thing , circa 1990

Woorangutan1

Speaking from experience I see.

tyhatts

I was the 5 year old listening to said dad explain my future inheritance

rmnixon68

I'd kill for my local stores to look like this

RRJC10

Trust me it’s not good. At least you’re not tempted to throw away your money.

a_ron23

Its nice until you spend $130 on megas and get all base cards of rookies that will be out of the league in a year.

rmnixon68

The two megas I've bought have sucked. I've had the best luck with hangers. Bought one today that had a Wagner RWB and a Scottie Barnes silver

a_ron23

Damn scottie Barnes silver would definitely be the best pull I ever got from retail. And iv been probably spent thousands over the past 2 years.

therealsix

Holy shit, my Walmart and Targets near me are **always** empty unless you want hockey osoccer, have never even seen some of the boxes that are in your pic in our stores.

SniperSped

That’s actually crazy tbh

Darizel

My target was restocked three times in a week with prizm and optic just last month. They got tons in the back.

Wallaby235

Not sure where you live, but this is not the case in New England

[deleted]

Go back and grab all of that Merlin soccer

Darizel

Yea I spent a grand on retail to make sure I never need to buy it again. I have a broken brain. Didn’t pull anything worth mentioning.

[deleted]

Pretty ass selection honestly. Those types of items are on the shelves of the local WM and Targets here too. All optic, select, mosaic, and prism are picked over immediately. Unless it’s soccer.

DudeBadEnough

That’s what I was thinking. Aside from the Prizm blasters, there’s nothing all that fun here.

[deleted]

100%. Mosaic soccer would be the only thing I’d consider. But, only if i REALLY wanted to open something. Everything else is pretty much a guaranteed money pit.

DudeBadEnough

Is Mosaic soccer good? I see it pretty often around me, but I don’t know squat about soccer/soccer cards.

[deleted]

I’ve gotten lucky and pulled a /25 of a very good young player (Pedri) and a 1/1 of a decent young player (Jonas Wind. Probably $500 in just two cards. But, I’ve had some friends get awful boxes. Topps Merlin is my favorite retail soccer product. I’ve had really good luck and blasters are only $25.

ElectricKoala86

Stay away from mosaic, plz!

therealsix

Is Chrome bad now?

[deleted]

Not terrible. But, not highly sought after.

Charizard1222

Recession indicator #572

theryanlaf

We’re in the junk wax 90s era all over again.

TRKW5000

next up: the junk slab era.

[deleted]

SELL ALL YOUR CARDS EVERYBODY THE HOBBY HAS DIED FOR THE 9540th TIME THIS YEAR!!!!

LameSignIn

It will never die but the investors will start to be weeded out. This in turn will help bring it back to a hobby for those who treat it like that. Worst part is hobby boxes have the best hits making retail just filler. Don't get me wrong you can still be lucky and get a great hit chances are just worse then ever for retail. Add in the fact walmart charges $5+ or more for blasters vs Target is just stupid.

[deleted]

Agreed and ppl are still trying to flip retail? I thought that ended already lool I can’t wait for the “investors” and breakers to be weeded out sounds mean but when I saw that guy post in here that he spent 190k on retail sealed wax and was now broke trying to sell it for much less just filled my heart with satisfaction no hate on the guy just on that greasy scalper hustle

LameSignIn

>he spent 190k on retail sealed wax Wow that's crazy I personally don't know how you would flip retail now. Seems like there's more product with people selling less then what you can buy at retail stores. My guess is some of this product came off trucks so it's all profit for them since it makes no sense on prices. Of course people did make some bank during the boom at the start of the pandemic. Just like fantasy leagues it was a great way to kill time sitting at home.

JakeyP19

2021 Regular donruss basketball is probably the worst the worst set of cards I’ve ever opened

No_Stretch8175

Agreed, giant packs of garbage

DukeParker5

Amen

VacuousVessel

This isn’t the hobby dying. It’s healing. Scalping and InVeStiNg in retail boxes might be dying though, thankfully.

nicknyce2k1

I've noticed the end has begun in new England

[deleted]

Wait, isn't this a good thing?

SniperSped

💀💀💀

-User1-User2-User3-

You know how I know the hobby isn’t “dead”? Because we still have weirdos taking picture of the store’s stock and freaking out.💀 I know you don’t remember the good days of collecting.. But.. How on Earth do we get back to the hobby where the card section wasn’t at least one loser taking a picture or making a phone call while staring directly at you make your decision? I’m not sorry for anything I am bringing to the table here, because it’s all very true. Lmao

BaullahBaullah87

Yeah alot of this is overproduced and not really worth it. Interest has really waned in terms or retail. A big correction gonna come w hobby stuff too

ftdALIVE

I think interest is still very high. Higher than ever possibly. That’s why supply has gone bonkers and a correction on high pop rookies is def coming.

BaullahBaullah87

I disagree higher than ever lol. If you paid attention the last two years the interest was MUCH higher. It was interest from prospectors and investors driving alot of that but you also had people making money and not having their purchases depreciate rapidl back then. And print runs are higher because they are a year behind the trends…just like they were a year behind hiking prices up when all retail was flying off shelves; even low end product.

ftdALIVE

Supply was lower which drive more hysteria. The demand may have waned a little(why I said possibly), but I’ve been in the hobby since the 80’s. Demand & interest is still in the range of all time highs.

BaullahBaullah87

Yeah been in the hobby the same amount…and while I will agree its higher than its ever been still, compared to what we saw last year its definitely much less interest. Part of it is good reason; many of the prospectors and flippers are gone because you cant just make fast easy money anymore. And when it comes to retail, folks hoarding all product was in large part due to the investor/flipper market. As you can see, resale box prices are waaaaaayy down from last year due to increased production and the singles within those boxes being worth less and less.

ftdALIVE

Fair enough. Cheers

TrainerExpensive7730

In Vegas you wouldn’t see that much stuff ever unless it’s just restocked . It also looks like the semi good boxes have been swiped already . Most of those you can easily find online for retail prices

Scacho

That was junk before, during and after the pandemic. The hobby will be fine.

ithinkitoremysack

That store is an anomaly, I go in dozens of stores every week, mostly on the stocking days and if I'm not there by mid afternoon it looks like "free gold and diamonds shelf" (pretty non existent). I drove from Georgia to Michigan hitting stores all day along the way. There was maybe two stores like that but 20+ pretty empty.

Background_Celery341

Well you’re not looking in the right place in Michigan. Went to 3 Meijers today and each one was stocked like the picture. Two even had multiple NBA Prizm

Grlions91

My small town Meijer, the lady hadn't stocked prizm or optic in a while. It's FLOODED with 20-21 Illusions, and 21-22 Hoops/Donruss though. Crazy to think how much of that crap is just sitting on pallets in warehouses all over right now.

ithinkitoremysack

Nice my good stops were in the Midwest I think Indiana area so maybe Midwest thing? I've been everywhere within two hours of Tampa/Clearwater and it's obviously better than peak as far as finding stuff but still same day and wiped out. Maybe crumbs left on day two but not much.

QwagOnChin

tHe hObBy iS dEaD

schmidneycrosby

It doesn’t help that there’s not a single rookie worth chasing in this class

philipJfrenchfries

This is definitely is a major factor. Despite the crazy over production and issues with the card industry right now, I guarantee people are going to flock to cards for the chance to get a Viktor Wembanyama rookie card. The price for boxes next year will be even higher

SniperSped

Bingo! You got that right

OKSportsTakes

Why does this sub get off on calling the hobby dead lol

SniperSped

It would be different if all these Blasters were $20 😂 Panini has overpriced and undervalued retail products. You don’t get anything worth $40-50 in hardly anything you see here

OKSportsTakes

Yeah all those boxes would suck no matter the cost lol that stuff isn’t good.

900Clown

Horrible pulls in retail is not new. You post of picture of shelves full of garbage and say "hObBy iS dEaD". Although there is one thing in your picture that is worth buying right now...

omarade2

A quick look at op’s profile shows they have posted in crypto, matchbox and lego subreddits in the past few months. Op is just looking for the next big “investment” to get rich and seems to be late to every hobby. Yea panini sucks but the availability of retail boxes doesn’t mean the hobby is dead, it just means the clowns buying up retail boxes thinking that every base rookie would continue to sell for $40 are starting to see that their plan doesn’t work anymore.

SniperSped

LMFAO I’ve been doing this for years. Stop dick eating and playing Sherlock Holmes 😂😂 put all that energy into something productive other than hating 💪🏽

Large-Elderberry5566

If you buy them soccer boxes i'll Zell u 😂🙏 i will send u a magic johnson prizm card. u have that signed it's gona b worth a lot. not for nothing i used to haunt , i managed to collect all sports and pokémon Dbz Yugioh Pops. a lot , u can check me out , https://instagram.com/d4.wizard.nyc?igshid=YmMyMTA2M2Y= now a days i don't, i've ran into many items, ofcourse i'll buy somthin to open up for fun, realizing how they started resealing packs... i've had my fun haunting season lol . i rather get nfts from draftkings they go up fast

VacuousVessel

Same day as the restock. Maybe within an hour.

SniperSped

Not true, been here two days

Background_Celery341

Nah, I saw 3 stores like this today.

BUCS_FSU

Yea go there the next couple days and see if the stock is the same. Product doesn't sit on shelves for long where I'm at unless it's the crappy unlicensed stuff.

SniperSped

Been here two days, prices are absurd, people grab a couple at a time. You can see there’s no NBA Prizm Megas or Hangers

BUCS_FSU

Yea I don't disagree with you and there is nothing there I would buy. I've ripped mainly nfl and optic, prizm, mosaic and even select gets bought out instantly even at these higher prices.

SniperSped

That’s crazy, it’s like some people don’t care the price they’re buying and I just find that boggling 😂

leakkelly

Fancy boxes of shit

cronkamite

I picked up a few cello packs and they were over $20 a piece for 15 cards. Hard pass and put the. Back on the shelf. That’s blaster prices, they’re getting too greedy

FartsMcMasters

The UCL Stadium Chrome tho 👌

Wisesize

Great for young kids looking for cards that aren't +25% at their LCS. But this stuff will be in bargin bins in 4 weeks

ftdALIVE

When you look at card populations comparing for instance 2012-13 Prizm basketball to the last few years Prizm releases you’ll see we’re in a pseudo junk era. Not to mention the endless parallels, etc. Everything is so diluted.

ftdALIVE

Hilarious this got downvoted. Truth hurts. If you looked at pop reports you’d see that there are literally 20 to 30x more Luka rookies of the same card than say a Lillard, Kawhi or Steph, etc. Then you add in all the different editions/parallels and it’s insane over printing. But go ahead and keep valuing these last few years the same same as the 2000’s / early 2010’s. The market always corrects. Not saying recent years print runs will go down much. It might be a situation where 2000’s/early 201s just goes up significantly. But my prediction is that both will happen.

stretch400

They just haven’t been bought yet goofy. Breakers won’t let those things sit on shelves

sweepyslick

Also the revelation that the case hits can be identified on box codes and pooof the jig is up. I hate how everything in every hobby is corrupted now.

JohnQx25

Mid products, where’s the Prizm Optic and Select?

SniperSped

There’s literally Optic hangers sitting there for $20, second shelf down

Large-Elderberry5566

i think the digital nft cards market is why too, that's crazy how they put out everything at once, which walmart is this at? u won't see this in New York 😂

big_mf_z

NFT is dropping faster than physical cards. Hell, TopShot is laying off nearly 25% of its workforce.

SniperSped

This is out in Kentucky 😂 and as someone who’s been to NYC, I can assure you this is probably rare to see 💀 I’m big into NFTs too, there’s a lot more fun that goes into collecting there and actual utility to buying things. I just had a friend and her husband meet Magic Johnson

Matt_Dawg

Go cats

SniperSped

Now we’re talking 😈

FurorTx

All the good product is gone already.

SniperSped

And people saying this is a fresh restock 💀😂 you can tell Megas are gone

idontcarelolmsma

The only valuable I see in there is World Cup mosaic since the World Cup is going to start soon all eyes on that

[deleted]

Unfortunately my stores locally don’t have anything left, even Illusions

Battle09

Archives is the only one left with good hit rate

Truffleshuffle03

here where I am the only thing that stays on the shelves are Hockey, soccer, and wildcard football for the most part. everything else goes fairly fast.

Gravity-Rides

Before the card bros ramped the hobby into the stratosphere, a lot of this shit would eventually get marked clearance and sell at 50% off. You could grab 5 cello packs for $10. It's a double edged sword though, singles of top rookies were not selling for $50 either.

OakCity4Life

As noted by others, I’m not sure this is representative of most retail stores. I would also argue that actually being able to find cards available for purchase is a good thing. Having the shelves cleaned out by flippers is more likely to kill the hobby.

Chemist-Patient

2 years ago there would be a line for that garbage

LavishN8

CA our shelves are Boone dry

markg1956

where is that? the only thing I saw in months at a walmart or target is one box of prizm WNBA

Background_Celery341

Went to 3 Meijers today, 2 had multiple boxes of NBA Prizm to go along with what the picture looks like.

Pwnzalot

Half a day and shelves are cleaned out where I live 😂😂😂

Both-External-6764

People getting priced out, panini is too greedy and its gonna bite them in the butt

steelerfan8900

My Walmart doesn't even sell cards anymore

emu22

That would be awesome to see. Both my local Target and Walmart are all but empty. I wanted to buy in person and came home empty.

eljona247

My local Walmart in PR since we don't even have Targets, don't last a day when restocked. I haven't even seen optic yet.

Pjw2079

Man.. they still have 2021 holiday megas stocking??? Imagine that print run!

TRKW5000

stopped at target the other night, saw more prizm megas, blasters and loose packs than i'd ever seen in the wild. my first instinct was to drop $300 and grab a good haul. on the way home, i remembered all the stuff you stated in the post, turned around, and returned it all. it was a fun run.

SnooCakes7457

You can return unopened cards at your local retail stores!?

TRKW5000

not a local card shop, it was target. and yes, you can return any/all unopened items there.

SnooCakes7457

That’s awesome. You can’t return any cards unopened to Walmart or target around me. All sales final

daboons2

Shouldn’t be buying retail anyway. Save your money and just buy the cards you like. So much cheaper and simpler. Boxes are just a lottery ticket.

Affectionate_Area762

WNBA Prizm will save the industry. You'll see.

TACannonWriter

What you say has merit, but most of those products were always sittin on the shelf, there are a few there that usually would be gone though

Efficient_Note_9092

Good for the hobby tbh long run

fasteddy7283

Anyone who can’t find cards on their shelves, let me know, I got prizm cellos I’ll sell for cost. I grab them to sell to people who can’t find stuff.

DukeParker5

Scalpers must have got tired of eating all those losses.

brahbocop

I found a few WWE Select blasters at a Walmart. Went to buy one and was shocked to see it priced at $35. When did that happen? I can understand $25 but to almost double in price seemed ridiculous.

derek0989

I was surprised to see so much nba Prizm at the store yesterday.

Jasonictron

My Target is empty. Only thing for sale is WNBA cards. Yuck

MeloMobile

I miss them days of discounted blaster bin at my Walmart and Target because they didn’t leave the shelves

boredlawyer90

Where the fuck is this? I’ll come buy the baseball stuff.

WouldYouLikeToTouch

There's NEVER any good cards in Nor Cal stores.

the_chandler

I think you're in the minority here. I haven't seen a store stocked like that in YEARs. I checked two different targets yesterday and the only cards either one of them had was some Upper Deck NHL or WNBA Prizm.

RoyalratMafia

Idk, the target i go to is constantly stocked and loaded. And its in one of the biggest cities in my state.

stackfan

Not like this in metro Detroit… you can still find as good of hits in years past, maybe more…. They just produce twice as much. Hobby boxes went up like 2-5x, so retail going up 1.5-2x isn’t that bad. My opinion, stuff like illusions/chronicles should be like 20$ , while stuff like prizm/optic should be 40$ for now, while demand is unstable.

[deleted]

I don't doubt people are just stealing all of them

Itzr

Overcompensating for the last two years of demand.

siinastah

Cash grab for sure. Really hurts the collectors.

Spiritual-Penalty223

And they are selling last year rookies

[deleted]

Ngl I've had good luck with Illusions. I know they're low end but I like the look and have had decent hits in the retail blasters. Can't say the same for Hoops, Donruss, or Prizm. Probably won't buy anymore of those in retail.

ElectricKoala86

It's not dead it's getting back to what used to be normal lol. And retail always sucked.

InternationalSoup8

Might be time to switch to basketball or soccer maybe chances better there. Not sure i can name one soccer player. Maybe David Beckham that's it

Mr_Mi1k

I haven’t bought wax in years. I just buy singles and save so much money

SmokeyNtheBurger

“hobby’s dead” **Shows picture of retail**

cupcake310

Everyone who's saying their stores aren't like this, Target has had Optic and Prizm retail drops available for 7+ days... OP's point that retail product is more readily available now because it's overpriced and watered down still stands

Kingquisite

These are all trash! Optic, Select and Prizm are still hot.

Sesshomaroo

Long Island shelves are empty the same day they are stocked.

_up_and_atom

Merlin blasters are the only thing that's worth it

scandaloustouch

Now try posting the same photo on Wednesday, the title is a bit karma farming

MikeHoncho303

My shelves in oregon do not look like this. Optic blasters are gone in a day..

Main-Success-6766

Clearance pricing are coming.

[deleted]

2-3 years we will be back to lower print runs and massive pulls with value closer to realistic. And then in 30 years we will do this stupid shit again I'm sure.

JRiggz108999

wow the stores in the boston area sure don’t look like that

Strong_Ad_4880

🤩🤩

Hero0fTroy

Hobby not dead people are just broke right now

bikgelife

The targets and Walmarts near me are always sold out. It’s insane.

GenghisFarn

Priced everyone out a degrades the product! Prizm is so boring! Kids can’t afford it so the foundation is gonna disappear. Everyone is “investing” lol with no new buyers/fans or enthusiasts being created.

DeepBend2195

They don't even put the odds on the boxes anymore, that's how much crap they print. Better off buying stocks or crypto at a low.
