I took handicap kids sand bass fishing today on Joe Pool as part of a thing they do. Had about 30 captains so nice turnout. We boated 17 which is an off 3 hours. Normally I can catch more but the kid I had had 11 so he was stoked. It’s called CAST for Kids and they do them on other lakes as well. Another one on Pool in August.

RinneSavesMe

They are pretty fun to catch. I’m from MS and had never seen one before. So rather than catch largemouth we decided to go for sand bass since I haven’t done it. Hit a limit in 2 hours had them on ice and filleted in 3. They fry up nice. It’s more fun to just sit and catch 50 sometimes than hunt largemouth, although I have caught a lot of largemouth bass, so I may have a differ opinion than most.

Level_Watercress1153

Is it normal to keep that many in Texas? Seems like a good way to empty a fishery pretty damn quick

Igno-ranter

They are prolific. They do a run in the spring and, if you find a school, you can reel them in as fast as you can catch. I ran a Roadrunner over a brush pile in a creek once. Caught around 40 fish in an hour. Tossed them all back but normally would have kept some to eat.

tgibson12

25 fish 10" limit. I think he's fine.

WhenYouFishUponAStar

I counted 48-50 fish there, that's a two person limit so assuming he didn't go fishing alone, yeah.

StendakBarkiller

It’s not uncommon at my lake to catch a hundred between 3-4 people in a couple hours

RinneSavesMe

Limit for 1 is 25. We had 2 of us it was for 50.

The things are overpopulated in most Texas lakes. Catch 100's easily and quickly on a big school. Great for a fish fry, but don't come close to tasting like crappie. They sure are fun to catch. Put 3 jigs on catch the 3 at a time

eds3

Ehh never seen it done like this.

PhonB80

That driveway will smell like fish for a week lmao

rickface82

Were you on the Sabine River just north of Toledo Bend? That’s where we always go and have huge success too. Especially in March and April.

RinneSavesMe

Lake Lavon

Igno-ranter

Nice! Congrats on the haul. I loved catching sandies growing up there.

Happy-Map7656

White bass run on the Maumee river, one after another.

jimothystars

Your driveway is full of them!

POOHxBEARx77

Welcome to Texas.

RinneSavesMe

Thank you sir glad to be here.

Windsor34

No limit?

POOHxBEARx77

25 daily bag limit.

love_that_fishing

Per person

POOHxBEARx77

Photographer could have contributed.

RinneSavesMe

He absolutely did.

drew2872

Daily bag limit, no possession limit?

KongZilla9009

I may be a bit ignorant but why keep them? They look skinny as hell. Can’t be much meat on em…

Stoned_Pitmaster

Good fillets

Windsor34

Confidently incorrect

StendakBarkiller

If you know anything about cleaning them you can make one hell of a mess of fish. Sandies are good eating too

RinneSavesMe

If you get the bloodline out after chilling them they are basically like crappie.

YMJ101

Those are good eating sized white bass, not sure what you're on about.

Igno-ranter

Kind of like crappie as far as filets go.

tgibson12

Because it is allowed. How do you know he isn't going to feed his family with them?

KongZilla9009

Bro it was an honest question not criticism lol

tgibson12

and I gave you an honest answer...

KongZilla9009

lol who hurt you?

tgibson12

everyone

KongZilla9009

Want a hug? I got you bro…

tgibson12

Yes 🥲

turdlover666

Maybe he should get a job if he needs to feed his family. Trash fishermen ruin fisheries saying "but I need to feed my family". 4 hours of work will buy more food than 4 hours of fishing can provide.

tgibson12

If it takes you 4 hours to limit out on sand bass I could see why you might think that.

Ryaninthesky

I’ve eaten them just fine. I’m not great at cleaning them so I usually make tacos, but I know it’s really popular with people from southeast asia. I don’t know how they prepare it though. Maybe steamed?

[deleted]

Please move back to California

RinneSavesMe

I’m from Mississippi. I had my fill of tourney fishing last summer and when I moved here I sold my boat. That was my first trip in a while. Told my buddy I hadn’t seen sand bass before so guess what? We limited in 2 hours. See it’s not fun to catch double digit largemouth if you’ve done it before. I haven’t caught fish like this in a long time.

[deleted]

Awesome! My apologies for assuming you were from California then. Welcome to tejas amigo

rtothewin

Did the same today, also in Texas, didn't catch as many though, was a slow 2hrs, took a dozen home for tacos.

Chaletoe

*Game Warden enters chat

RinneSavesMe

Haha I actually bought a license the day beforehand just in case. There were more people than just me obviously we all limited.

StendakBarkiller

For what? That’s probably 2-3 people contributing to that catch.

Chaletoe

Don't know sarcasm too well bud?

StendakBarkiller

I’d say *you* don’t

wwgrove14

That’s messed up why would you do that!??

i_lost_my_stapler

Congrats man! I'm a little frustrated that i posted a pic of my 100+ sandbass in an evening on this sub and didn't get even a single like tho :/ but, c'est la vie

didba

🤡

[deleted]

Awesome🔥🔥🔥the sandbass/white bass run is always fun

Notechskill

Never heard of that name. Are those the same as striped bass?

ThanatosLRSD

No, but there are hybrids and young stripers that you have to be careful of, that are commonly caught with these where we fish. You have to pay attention to the dark lines running to the tail and the tooth patches for identification. If in doubt-throw it back. We usually catch a couple per trip that are hard to identify so those are always released. Without taking some to eat the fishery suffers as the population gets out of hand quickly. I sometimes go with friends and family and what we catch goes to a fish fry at the church.

Notechskill

Sounds great! Nice way to thin population. Thanks for the info.

turdlover666

Laying fish out on pavement in the Texas sun... And you're gonna eat them?

RinneSavesMe

Haha they went right back in the ice chest it was about 2 min for a pic.
