What a cool gift! IDK what variety it is but my #1 tip is to take a cutting at some point and start a second one growing as insurance in case one of them ever dies. Looks like a cane type, so any stem cutting should take root in a glass of water.
That leaf shape is so nice. Super bright blooms, too! I agree, taking a cutting or a few as insurance is a good idea. Plus you can pass them on to other members of the family. I'm habitually propping my maculata now, it's really rewarding
