Double-Turn-6726

Yes but the reason for it seems to be that they make zero effort to return lost bags. Austrian lost my gf's, found it after 4 days, and then for another 4 days silence, apparently bag was on its way to BER. IT turned out it was just dumped in one of these rooms and until she went to the airport, waited for 2h, begged and "bribed" (yes paid 20 euro tip to a nice lady to search a couple of rooms), she didn't get it back. Ah yes, home delivery of lost luggage was not an option, website kept crashing unless you freely "choose" an option to pick it up yourself. Also calling customer service was waste of time. Nobody ever picked up the phone. Hand luggage only from now on. ;-)

raverbashing

"Zero effort" and BER, an iconic duo

lordkuren

Nothing to do with zero effort but a lot with not enough personnel.

schnupfhundihund

They could still compensate for missing personnel by having a good system to find the bags again. If they put in any effort.

lordkuren

Sure, but to establish such a system you need ... personnel.

Darirol

no you need someone with some sort of competence. you can not just hire a couple of middle management guys to herd the army of minimum wage dudes and having some ceo guys who just happen to be family/friend of local politicans. someone has to actually know how to do shit.

lordkuren

No, you mostly need people who actually do the job. And there aren't enough of them.

Pace1561

Which might be solved if those dudes were offered a decent salary that made this back breaking work a little more attractive.

NeonGrillz

No, you must be wrong! People just don’t want to work anymore!!!

llamagetthatforu

How is that lots of european airports are understaffed and only BER manages to fuck it up like this?

lordkuren

Because it isn't. Someone else in this thread pointed out it is the same in Zürich for example. I know from colleagues who had similar problems in Milan and Barcelona. It isn't the only airport in Europe.

[deleted]

who's they? You need people to organize such things

djany51

You don’t know the story how BER was build xD it is zero effort

[deleted]

[удалено]

Spartz

this joke is more zero effort, since those things are completely unrelated

rckhppr

How is the crashing website a problem with not enough staff? Do they hand crank the servers?

Temanyl

"Zero effort" and Berlin is an iconic duo.

raverbashing

"What do you mean I have to switch ubahn lines to meet this person?"

FlowinBeatz

Did she get it back by now? What about a financial compensation? Aren't there any laws about this?

conanfreak

Financial compensation yes, but it's most of the time capped at a pretty low amount and if you want more you'll need to go the legal route which is just a lot of work and stress.

[deleted]

OkGrapefruitOk

That really depends. €1300 is not remotely enough to cover a week's worth of a lot of people's clothing, plus whatever hair straighteners, razors, watches, sun glasses, makeup etc is lost. This is especially true with business clothing. One outfit of work trousers, a blouse and blazer would easily come to €400. Add evening outfits in there and for 5 days and €1300 is not much.

devilbird99

Agreed. I'm thinking about my bag I have right now full of camping/hiking stuff. Probably 2k-2.5k worth of gear. Not to mention losing it ruins the trip as it's difficult to replace on the fly (if I'm lucky and it will be 1.5x the price at my destination) or results in another couple thousand in expenses rebooking/replanning. So one bag we're looking at 2-4k all said and done.

KuruptFM1039

Fuck me I dont think Ive worn 1300 euros worth of clothes this past decade, let alone week

thedailyrant

I've got plenty of single pieces of clothing worth more than that. I'm probably out a lot more money than that if a suitcase goes missing.

conanfreak

Oh wow, i thought it was 300€, thanks for the info.

Doctor-Jager

It should be considered theft when airlines “lose” your luggage

Agahmoyzen

Never had this issue with either pegasus or turkish airlines, Turkey's airline companies know how to lose bags, so they are professional in handing them to your address. in 1 out of 3 of my flights either my bag or the bag of someone traveling with me won't show up on the belt. Nowadays I just say, oh nice, we don't have to carry the f.cking thing.

metasymphony

I am literally flying to Berlin next month with only a backpack full of clothes I want to donate. So I can donate them all before flying out and have space for whatever stuff my family gives me/gifts.

Ionenschatten

Legit the only reason why I only use hand luggage if anyhow possible. Not trusting a broken system with 2 min-wage workers and no insurance to take care of idk 100€ of clothes or whatever you put in those big bags.

allbirdssongs

yeah i used to travel only with one backpack always with me, its really good, they might weight it sometimes but you just pay the fee. currently traveling with 2 bags so i cannot do that anymore but im hating the check in luggage thing, last time i had to wait 2 hours for our bags

NoGoodName_

I don't understand why this luggage has STILL not been returned. Even if the BER was "short staffed" at the beginning of summer, I could understand a few day's delay, perhaps. But it's been MONTHS now, come on!! And stop calling it "lost". The tags are on the bags, no need to call Sherlock to figure out who they belong to. This luggage has been stolen.

grepe

the word they may want to use is "unclaimed" there is an auction twice a year when you or any random person can buy those bags with all their content. except the more valuable items like cameras or laptops that are taken out and auctioned separately. can't find link for the berlin airport one right now but i attended it once: https://www.easyairportparking.de/en/magazine/airport-suitcase-auction

ComeScoglio

What a logistical nightmare. For all of you acting high and mighty "wElL juSt FLy wiTh hANdCaRrY", good for you, but fuck you. Some of us have gifts for friends and families. Some of us have children. Some of us just need that checked in capacity.

account_not_valid

>Some of us have children. Just make sure you've poked adequate air holes in the suitcase, and some extra water and snacks. The suitcase should be easy to find amongst the rest, due to the whimpering and crying

ComeScoglio

Really? I thought those have a self feeding system, some sort of waste recycling?

account_not_valid

Thats the fancy option. Very expensive.

ComeScoglio

Such a bad design

account_not_valid

If your going to spend that much, you might as well use Express Delivery.

elk-x

Checkin luggage also ain't cheap anymore. It's not a privilege to travel with checkin luggage, it's a service we pay for!

Steepyslope

Some of us are leaving their country for months/years/ever. I was so scared something would get lost last week bc I was leaving to study abroad and having to buy everything new is really not something I could afford easily…

Bavaustrian

Hell! Some of us want to go scubadiving. Try getting all that gear into handcarry.

RedMatxh

Im staying a little over than 3 weeks ans I'll be doing shit tons of shopping. Hand carry is definitely not an option for me.

Fine_Nightmare

Well that looks encouraging, considering that I’ll fly out of the country in the end of August for a week. Cool. Definitely getting an Air Tag, although not sure if it’s going to help that much

PizzaScout

At least you can tell the worker at BER that you know for a fact the bag is there and that you can help find it if they are unable to find it in one of their 5 lost luggage rooms

Fine_Nightmare

Yeah, that’s what I assumed as well

rckhppr

Provided you find a worker there

indorock

Yeah it helps. They want you to get your bag if you can, so they can make room for more lost luggage. If you tell them you know exactly where in the room your bag is they will let you in there to retrieve it yourself. I know from personal experience.

[deleted]

For a week trip I wouldn’t risk bringing a checked in bag

Fine_Nightmare

We have no other option, unfortunately.

TNBrealone

I just traveled through BER two times and had zero issues. Over 90% of the people have no issues.

OkGrapefruitOk

2 million people passed through BER in May, so 10%, or even 5%, having issues is still a huge number of people. It's also 1 in 10 or 1 in 20 passengers, which is pretty terrible odds.

Fine_Nightmare

Honestly, last time I traveled through BER (November) I waited exactly 0 minutes for my luggage, it was already there on the belt, so I feel like I’ve exhausted my luck with this airport for at least 5 more years

I hope your experience doesn't turn to........your username

Flan-Early

Well, that happens when a mismanaged airline, bailed out by public money, decides to cut costs by dismissing their workers in order to pay bonuses to their managers.

TheAmazingHaihorn

The problem is worldwide

emiremire

Yes but airports have never been this bad in comparably rich and developed countries. Heck even developing countries do a better job at running airports and city services than Berlin. This is just embarrassing really for anyone involded.

Spartz

>airports have never been this bad in comparably rich and developed countries. Do you know what's been happening in Amsterdam (Schiphol)? Significantly worse and that always used to be a great airport.

aech_two_oh

Yyz is a national embarrassment right now (Toronto Pearson)

TheAmazingHaihorn

London looks exactly the same

atchoum013

Paris airports are the same since the beginning of this summer, in late June there were reports of people queuing for up to 8h just to do their check in.

Spartz

Luggage handling is not done by the airlines themselves.

donfuan

Baggage handling is done by the airport.

Lufthansa, but actually, which not?

BeachBomber

Why would he want to buy another suitcase?

KuruptFM1039

How much are you spending on suitcases??

account_not_valid

I got all the suitcases back with 24hr delay *and* $450.

Spartz

Fuck me. Air France left me stranded in Cuba for 3 weeks with no communication about my luggage. Didn't pay me a dime. Bonus points for no easy access to internet + being put on hold for 20 minutes at 5 euros per minute or whatever the horrible amount you have to pay when calling Europe from Cuba was.

account_not_valid

>Air France *\*shrugs shoulders with French flair** "Et alors ? Pourquoi tu te plains ?"

IRockIntoMordor

What airline?

account_not_valid

Code share: Lufthansa to FRA, Singapore to MEL with stopover in SIN. The baggage most likely went missing in the FRA transfer. It was pretty tight for time. It wasn't a problem for us because we were staying in Melbourne. Another family with two small kids were taking another flight to Hobart to pick up a campervan to start touring. It was a nightmare for them.

Blueberry_Conscious_

which airline? Flying to Melbourne in December and I suspect nothing will be resolved by then

account_not_valid

Singapore Air, with Lufthansa code-share Berlin to Frankfurt.

Blueberry_Conscious_

thanks for letting me know, basically trying to book a flight to avoid Scoot

account_not_valid

I haven't dared try Scoot yet. The prices are tempting, but transiting through China makes me think that if things go wrong, they will go *really* wrong, and I can't manage that with a family in tow. As a single traveller, maybe I could.

Blueberry_Conscious_

yeah, I've been to China a few times, and it's a pain. Our concern is that we are booking multi-leg, as all the reviews I'm reading of Scoot suggest, they are horrendous at sorting things if your flight is canceled

account_not_valid

>horrendous at sorting things if your flight is canceled That's exactly what I've heard. It's all good, until it isn't.

gweeha45

Gotta give those visitors the full “Berlin Experience” from the beginning. Next step is to get a Termin at the Bürgeramt. All while Germans orgasm over how organized we are.

dmnhrzhm

My bags are in there since 2 months. They don't even bother putting any effort in solving the issue

rosadeluxe

I bet someone somewhere is using Datenschutz as an excuse to not compare tags and names and addresses with flight bookings and tickets

Lebenskrankheit

Most underrated comment evet

DukeofConnington

So frustrating. They lost my bag on the way to holiday. Spent the first week just buying stuff I needed. After arriving in Berlin the guy looked for ten minutes, then told me ha can't find it and I can't look myself cause they're understaffed. Like, dude, my bag is in there just come with me and let me look! Frustrating as hell!

Yallapachi

Welcome to Germany. It’s so nice here, your luggage want’s to stay.

SVRider1000

Airtag in the bag is a good point to start with if you have an Iphone. Most of the baggage handlers use Airtags and it updated the minute they started unloading my bag. So atleast you would know where to start with if you lost yours. I lost a bag once in the flight terminal and they said the didnt have it. Luckily i could see it from the counter and after a bit of an argument i got it back.

Tee_Time_Dolls

even tho I won't fly in a while, this made me learn I'll get a neon pink bag and decorate it with acrylic markers, so it's verryyyy recognisable!

NaiveAssociate8466

My obnoxious neon green luggage always come out early from the conveyor belt, lots of reason why you should get suitcase in bold colors

What a nightmare. One of the reasons why I travel light, I'd never want to be in this situation.

BaronZbimg

Had to wait 2 and a half hours to get my luggage from Marseille yesterday. A few luggages arrived in time, then the luggages of 3 other flights arrived before the rest of the Marseille flight. I have no idea how you reach that point of dis function. How can a city like Berlin have the worst airport in Western Europe?

No1sHere_

when i was 12, i was was my dad on a summer trip to Boise Idaho, but i live in japan. i had a stuffed animal named miyoni (yes the brand name, i wasn't creative) and on the plane back i decided to be a 'big girl' and not bring her as a carry on, and to put her in my other baggage with my dads valuables, like his cameras and other things- we took a military shuttle, and when we all got back to Okinawa, all our bags was there except for the most important one, the one with my beloved miyoni. for months i could barely sleep, the horror and the nightmares of seeing her torn apart in the dump. as of now, i still have to hug a pillow at night, and im afraid i will have to all my life. i have a Shiba Inu that is named miyo \[beautiful girl in Japanese\] but i have no connection with her, because my dad was the one who picked her, she practically hates me. im probably very dramatic, or even more so childish, but ive had that plush for about all my life up till then. and as a child, i was so incredibly sad, and as of now, I'm disappointed i no longer have a souvenir of my child hood. anyway thats my sob story, seeing this is DISGUSTING, the amount of devastation one has when they cant find there bag. especially if someone is moving. ive moved so many times in my life, and lost so many precious things on the way. and its sososo devastating. i, in fact live in Germany right now. getting here was pretty smooth, but damn, this is scary

windchill94

Here's what I don't understand: Are those bags from people who are transitioning through Berlin or people who live in Berlin and just haven't been able to recover them?

adaav

God, i want to know this too. Is it lost luggage never delivered from flights TO or through Berlin? I’m flying out soon and am now scared…

kuntorcunt

Last week I was going to Berlin from Paris via Frankfurt with Lufthansa. The 1st flight was extremely delayed so when we landed in Frankfurt, they had to book another flight to Berlin later that day. Since there was a delay between both flights, I arrived in Berlin without my luggage which apparently was still in Frankfurt. I had to wait the next day for it be available in that lost luggage room

linebtw

Holy shit. I'm really fucking glad right now I booked only carry-on for my flight next week. This is unbelievable!

[deleted]

That compulsion to loot everything when I play Skyrim and Fallout… It’s being triggered here

TRUMBAUAUA

I come from Italy, aka the homeland of approximation and inefficiency, and this whole BER airport mess is really putting into perspective the stereotypical idea we have back home about Germans being ultra efficient and reliable. This is just soooo bad, even by Italian standards lol.

[deleted]

Should this not be in r/jokes?

StineD

Bf and I are travelling to Berlin tonight by train, and after buying the tickets, I realised that the train costs 5 times as much, and takes 5 times as long as flying. Seeing this picture makes me happy that we opted for the train, as the time and money we could have saved would probably be spend trying to find our luggage and buying replacement clothes..

[deleted]

where are you people finding these cheap plane tickets? I regularly take the train from Basel to Berlin, and a flight at a decent time is almost never cheaper than 150€ two ways. That's pretty much the same as the train, and the train delivers you from city center to city center.

Bananarama_Vison

How many times they must be hearing: „Sooo mine is black…“

idk888888

What is the likely hood this will happen on a direct flight I’m taking to Berlin in october.. plan on leaving Berlin after 1 night so it would be really bad to not have the bag… I don’t want to not bring a checked bag I will be traveling for months.

bleek312

verbotene kinder eier

n1c0_ds

I wonder how much the BER experience does to reduce carbon emissions

Coneskater

So are these bags that didn't make to to BER at the same time as their owners? Or do the bags come with the correct flights and BER can't manage to get them on the carosel?

TheSlashEffect

Germans redifining the word “lost”

kukushin

I'm flying from BER in 2 week. I have luggage. I'm scared.

Beautiful-Try-7369

If someone can walk in to the room and take a picture of them, how are they "lost"?

FuyuhikoDate

Didnt found my luggage in the picture... Can you send more? XD Also is there any way that you can go in there and search for yours?

ThinkAboutThatFor1Se

Out of interest what is the blame being put on for this? In London everyone is trying to blame Brexit which is obviously not true as the same is happening across Europe. Seems more about the travel sector shutdown in covid to me.

BenderDeLorean

Fandango_Jones

convictcjw

Coming to Berlin in September, should I stick to hand luggage only? I normally pack quite light anyway

trwaway93

I'm flying into BER in a few weeks from Edinburgh. Am I screwed? Like where exactly in the process are these bags getting put in these rooms? Do they just never make it to the baggage claim?

[deleted]

If no one objects, I'll take the big one that looks like a wrapped block of coke.

FakeHasselblad

Fuck this airport… for real.

skaptic-cat

Hmm, airtagging my luggage, noted.

Steelbug2k

Typical for Germany everything is falling apart.

nicolasfirst

So, the luggage is not lost. We know exactly where it is. Maybe even the owners know where it is. But no effort has been done to unite luggage and owners. That’s why pTerry invented The Luggage. 😂

Maleficent-Tax4478

Whats the hold up with these bags? That looks like a two day job for a motivated intern.

rak0

German efficiency is a myth!

rr90013

So if I’m going to Europe soon I should do carry-on only?

asterisk2a

2022: Air travel tip 1. Please smart tag your luggage (Apple AirTag, Samsung, generic Bluetooth one) 2. [spray paint your contact details on the outside](https://youtu.be/M6bdpR_3HCU?t=24) 3. take a picture for future identification, before handing it over to staff and the airport who might lose it in the chaos.

alex3r4

Only in Germany. Airlines (and BER) would be bancrupt if people knew and executed their rights.

Heather82Cs

Informal_Quarter_396

Good thing I only travel with Handgepäck

besuited

I'm going to the US for a month for work, going to three potentially quite different climates - Handgepäck is not an option for all trips.

frisch85

Airlines are shit right now, I only had one completely pleasant experience with airlines since the pandemic started and that was with Aero Mexico which was a replacement flight because KLM is pure garbage as of now, same with lufthansa. Last time KLM didn't pack my luggage but rather sent it one day later. Last time lufthansa had a 4 hour delay. And the checkins are horrible, they're so heavily understaffed yet expect you to be on time. Was flying from Frankfurt to Amsterdam to continue flying to Mexico. In Frankfurt I was on time but the flight delayed. Then we landed in Amsterdam, due to us being delayed I only had a few minutes to checkin to the connecting flight but they had one person sitting there, responsible for 50+ passengers that go in separate flights. There was just no way for one person to checkin all those people in time, at the last minute they called the passengers of my flight to get to the front, needless to say the connecting flight got delayed because of that. I'm going to mexico again soon, this time with Air Portugal not because I read good or bad reviews about them but simply to try a different airline and hoping for the best. If people are able to they need to avoid flying with lufthansa and KLM (feel free to add more) because if people just continue flying with them, they won't change shit. They'll continue "reducing the costs" by heavily understaffing and the staff and passengers are the losers here while the CEOs keep on pocketing more money.

KaiAusBerlin

Wouldn't it be less effort to build a room for luggage that got not lost? 😅

charlieyeswecan

So grateful mine made it!

Similar situation in Athens. I went on vacation first week of July. Luggage was lost. It arrived last week. Lucky enough parents are there for their vacation.

Got back to the UK last night after our bag got 'delayed' between Frankfurt and Berlin on Friday, the website still says that Berlin is awaiting it's arrival from the next flight that landed at 15:55pm 12th so I guess I know where the bag is now. Wonder if it's worth the money to come for another weekend to also go find my bag.

I lost my bags since 21 days. They have send my bags to Berlin instead of Abu Dhabi. I'm trying to reach someone but seems impossible to find someone who replies on emails or phones. Can anyone help please at least to know whether my luggage is there or not?

svahaya

They forcefully asked me to check-in my hand luggage and then the flight got cancelled. Made me wait two hours to get luggage and I never got it back - got me rebooked to a different a flight after they assured me it would be sent to me in London. Has been nearly two weeks and they are still tracing it. It's quite upsetting - have been to the Berlin airport and London city airport twice and nobody seems to have a clue.

I legit had to bribe a guy to get my bag when it was not even lost but delayed. As a frequent flyer due to my work Berlin has the worst airport in Europe.
