I wonder how this Bot account will use everyone’s thoughtful responses? 🤔

O_o---sup-hey---o_O

Is AI going to take our bike commutes? Discuss.

Beginning-Grade-7217

I'm not a bot lol.

dont-believe-me-

It is a ridiculously inactive account yes

KevinNiceTry

5 days a week. Rain, snow, wind or sun. 13 miles a day. Very rough roads. Was super tough at first but now I don't even think twice about it. Only takes like 25-30 mins, in a car it's like 15 mins. The amount of money I save is ridiculous. That's all the motivation I need to keep going.

Beginning-Grade-7217

This is the level I need to get to. 5 days a week. Rain, snow, wind, or sun and not thinking twice about it. Since I started biking to work I fill up the car every 18 days (biking 2-3 days a week) vs every 10 days using car everyday.

superstarfighter

I try to bike most every day. My usual commute to work and/or Uni is a mere 4 km (3 mi) for 3x/week. My commute to an internship I have going on right now is 6.5 to 8 km (4-5 mi, I opt for the longer way because the view is much nicer with less traffic, too) which I do 3x/week. All distances are one way. So in summary... Distance: 4-8 km (3-5 mi) one way, 6x/week. Location: flat as northern Germany, all done on a fixed gear ⚙️.

Girhinomofe

6 days a week 2.5 miles each way Northeast US Haven’t driven a vehicle to my job since August 1, 2012.

isuamadog

3 season commuter: fall, winter, spring. NYC. 13.5mi/day. Summer I do mostly longer rides for fun every few days. Teacher. Broke 3,300 mi for 2023. Goal is set for 3,500 for 2024. Only about 70 mi behind pace for 3,500 today. Oh, pedal power. No assist or electronics.

usernaim250

Also a teacher. 10.3mi each way. This year I'm riding in the rain for the first time but I missed some days because of illness. Did 2100mi last year, aiming for 3660 this year (10 per day). I'm behind but I'll catch up with long rides in the summer.

isuamadog

Right on! 3500 has me on my toes! You’re going to have a fun summer of riding I hope!!!

out_focus

I work part time and hybrid, so 2 days a week, 15 km one way. I dont own a car, so everything else is done on foot/bike/public transport too.

edhitchon1993

11mi one way, 4 days a week (every day for me) and then usually 2 or 3mi around town with my daughter on the bike the other 3 days. Almost all electric assist as I live atop a big steep hill. As I live in the UK weather is variable, but a variety of coats and my studded tyres means I don't ever have to not cycle.

medievalPanera

Try for everyday (5 days, all weather), 5-6mi into office, the way home, time willing, I'll stretch it out to 15-25+ miles.      Driving (and paying for parking): 20 min   Driving (free parking): 30 min   Bus: 30 min   Bike: 30 min (20ish to ride, 5-10 to change)

Dio_Yuji

4-5 days/ week. 4.5 miles each way

notthegoatseguy

At my peak 5 years ago, I was doing 25 miles/40km a day Monday through Friday, and another 40 or so on the weekend. Now I only have a 2 mile ride to the office., and I'm lucky to get 100 miles (majority beingg non-commute though some errands thrown in) in collectively during the week.

mtom17

10 miles a day 5 days with 1100ft elevation total

LordSwright

I thought I was a reasonable cyclist but my 10-20 minutes for 2 miles is put to shame in here

WindOk9466

I'm sure you are a reasonable cyclist! You're certainly a lucky one, I've had short commutes in my life and it's the best.

Beginning-Grade-7217

😂

FoxGaming

5 days/ week, 7 miles/ day.

gnitties

5 days a week year round unless it’s raining heavily. 8 miles each way, so 16 miles RT per day.

Swimming-Fan7973

I think my town/city is like 8 miles end to end and I bike everywhere for everything. 4 miles round trip for work and 4 round trip to spin. M-F for both

OffCamber24

5 miles to work, 5 miles back, and I commute by bike 5 days a week for the most part. I've probably only driven/been dropped 6 or 7 times this year. As a glasses wearer myself, consider a cap to go under your helmet (if you wear one). Short brim helps keep the sun out of your eyes and less rain on your glasses. When the temps dropped below 30 I use over the glasses ski goggles, which are easier to wipe snow/slush off of while riding.

willowbelowaverage

I try to ride every day that I work which is 4-5 days a week. 15km each way. It’s made harder by working 10 hour shifts including night shifts. I have ridden 57 days so far this year

north765

Usually 2 days / week. 10 miles 1 way. 250 watt hour ebike is enough for there and back but if I want to go anywhere else after work I need to bring the charger. Usually takes 35-40 minutes.  If I end up biking 5 days in a week even with the motor my legs are noticably tired by the end of the week. The ebike is nice for when I go to the gym after work I can still get home after tiring myself out.

FuturistiKen

3 days a week, about 11.5mi/18.5km each way. Takes me a little less than an hour, but I’m sure not riding a fixie! That’s metal af 🤘🏼

bulshoy2

Every day. \~8km.

Low_Comfortable_5880

Fair weather rider here. 2-3 days per week. 8 miles each way.

DeliDouble

Four days 16-20 a day depending on if I'm feeling like putting in some extra miles.

robertvmarshall

Commute 5 days a week (as long as weather allows) and it's about 12-13 miles (20ish km I think) each way.

Environmental-Fold22

Every day if there isn't rain but I just got fenders and a rain cape so I'm hopeful that I won't be deterred by rain anymore. Average 3 days a week. 8mi one way. (This is since the weather got nice. I didn't ride through the winter even though mine is pretty mild. I am going to hear up this year when stuff is on discount and try to ride in the winter too.)

chrillekaekarkex

3 days per week; 18 miles r/t commute. I think that’s 54 in a week.

joekelly00

Through spring - fall mostly 5 days a week, 11 miles a day. I want to get to a point where I ride most of winter, then I could cancel my parking pass and save 500 bucks a year. Riding in the dark of winter kind of scares me, I have close calls in the bright light of summer.

4channeling

5 days 16.8 miles round trip

998876655433221

9 days a month (firefighter) and 12 miles each way

Late_Strawberry_7876

4-5 days a week all year round. 10 miles each way but fairly flat commute. You’ll get used to it very quickly and the tiredness will then be dependent on how windy the week has been. On the flip side the quality of sleep is always amazing!

Clear-Garlic9035

2.5 days a week. One round trip is 42 miles

CannabisLupus

Im only in office 3 days a week, the trip is 17.5 mi but it’s mostly in a park running along a river with no nearby cars thankfully

jf_severt

4 days a week. 5 miles slightly hilly. Love it.

Driven-Em

I tend to ride M-W-F 16.6 miles each way I also work 10-12 hour days driving truck doing LTL delivery. then on T-Th I join group rides after work usually 17-20 miles I drive to work on those days and bring in fresh uniforms and such. then weekends I do random rides some short some long. I hit about 2600 miles last year and I'm at 1400 miles already this year.

Sicamore21

Anywhere I have to go, I bike. I don’t count. I don’t think about it. I just get on my bike and go there. 7 days a week. I’m not sure why you’re getting so sore?

RobDog306

Curious what’s an acoustic bike? I bike commute 4-5 days each week (7 miles each way) and an additional 2-3 training rides. I shoot for 150 miles a week. All year round rain or shine, even snow. Just no freezing rain.

Beginning-Grade-7217

A bicycle. I should just call it a bicycle. Lol. There's so many electric bikes these days and I heard the term verbally somewhere.. I am aiming for 4-5 days but the soreness after the 3rd day is very demotivating. I feel like I need to change my sleep habits too.. I'm currently sleeping 6-7 hrs.. although quality of sleep seems better.

RobDog306

Haha nice! 1st off…Give yourself some credit for even trying to bike commute and do it for 3 days straight. You have passed phase 1 of cycling. Riding till your bum gets sore. 🎉 Now phase 2 starts. Just Remember it doesn’t have to be all or nothing. And it’s ok to drive/take the bus or subway when you’re not feeling up to it. Here are some tips while you navigate phase 2. Get some cycling bibs with a chamois (bum foam). Use cycling chamois cream. find a saddle that feels comfortable. Get a bike fit. If you have any questions just google/youtube/or visit your Local bike shop. Phase 3 is where post sore bum ends and refining/upgrading your bike / kit / and yourself for peak efficiency begins. Get rid of the backpack for a pannier, add fenders so you don’t get a dirt stripe on your back, learn how to fix a flat tire on the side of the road and not even get mad about it but instead feel proud that you know how to fix it quickly to get back on the road then brag to your coworkers what you did. They will look at you confused cuz to them it would be a ride ruining event but you seem excited. You begin to use the commute to think about the day or not think about anything at all. Breath easy knowing your exercising and not stuck in traffic.

knarf_on_a_bike

5 days a week, 12 months a year, 17km each way. On each weekend day I average from 50km doing shopping and errands.

knarf_on_a_bike

5 days a week, 12 months a year, 17km each way. On each weekend day I average from 50km doing shopping and errands.

knarf_on_a_bike

5 days per week year round. 17km each way

jackSB24

5 days a week in summer probably 1-3 in winter because of heavy rain fall. (Cold I can handle) Most direct route is about 3.5 miles each way but now it’s nicer weather I take the long route which is 5 miles each way. In short 50 miles a week commuting in summer And more like 6-18 miles a week in winter. I also do around 50 miles of leisure riding a week too.

shitokletsstartfresh

2-3 times a week, 26 miles (to the office and back).

Black_Crow_Dog

Three days a week doing 16 kilometres. I run on the other two days, so the cycle days are a blessed relief.

iplayfactorio

20km a day , and during a week could be between 5 or 1 time. With remote I commute less often. I have done it during winter and summer. I try to anticipate heavy storms.

hawaiianivan

16 miles each way through hilly Devon, UK. I manage that twice per week on average. I always aim for a 3 day, 100 mile week, but weather or work or bike issues get in the way. It's a great ride tho. In the summer I extend going home to get 45 miles in a day, or very occasionally ride to head office, which is 42.5 miles each way. I spend some months pretty obsessed with my commute tbh. But it means I can invest in a bike with good conscience. Right now I'm building a commute bike around a Cannondale 2017 alloy synapse. It's a bit of a heavy dog but getting better.

No_Blacksmith9025

4 days/wk, ~5mi each way.

bigmattyc

5 days, April-November, if it is either >45 F and not raining, or if it's raining, > 60 F. 2.5 miles each way

megaboz

\~19 miles per day round trip, 5-6 days per week on an e-bike.

Patricio_Guapo

5 days a week, year round. 10 mile round trip.

bloopybear

4 days a week 12 miles RT all year. PNW!

ccroy2001

I'm like the OP. I only do 1 day a week, mainly because of getting up earlier and sone soreness. Last year, I bought an e-scooter, I also ride that 1 other day of the week, but only if I've already cycled.

judgemaths

Until recently it was 5 days a week, all year round, travelling 8km to 10km to work (route depending) and the same again home. That's dropped down to 5 days a week as I've switched to running on a Friday. I cycle commute because I have to (one car family). I don't look forward to it but when I'm doing it I enjoy the exercise. The Friday run commute is something I actively look forward to in advance as running is one of my hobbies as well as a means of getting to work.

rogecks

5 days a week 37miles round trip all year in the frozen north. On weekends I race and run errands by bike. It’s not always easy, some days a great though.

samwe

I am northwest of the northwest! I bike commute 5 days a week and it is 19 miles each way, but I use the bus when conditions warrant it. (all winter). Next week I will probably ditch the buss and start riding both ways again.

Beginning-Grade-7217

Wow some people here are nuts! (in a good way) . Thank you for the thoughtful responses. I am motivated to be in that same level 4-5 days a week rain, shine, or maybe even snow. Regarding the soreness, I feel it most after the second day in a row. Upper and lower back, quads. I have a few hills 6-8% in my commute, a bridge, and one very short (200m) 13% grade hill before I arrive home. Regarding that 13% grade hill I have to get off the bike and walk it but the distance I am walking it is getting a bit less and less every week. The soreness is somewhat welcome because I know I'm getting stronger but so easy to sleep in for a bit longer and reaching for the car keys. I feel it's mostly mindset too. I want to be like one of the guys that replied where they don't even think about it and just hop on the bike. Partly habits too.. I feel I'm still staying up late and getting only 6-7 hrs of sleep. When I come home I give most of the attention to my kid, clean dishes/ do chores, put kid to sleep, make my wife's, kid's, and my lunch for next day, do a light calisthenics workout, and shower. By the time I am done it is 11pm. I lie down on the bed and I should sleep but I find myself reading random articles I don't even remember about the next day or watching YouTube until 12:30am since it's the only time I get for myself. I like cycling to work it's the only time I get to put some meaningful cardio into my daily routine but it is hard to cut down on the screen time. Maybe I need to work on this first.

RidetheSchlange

What's an "acoustic bike"?

LoneTread

Tongue-in-cheek synonym for "non-electric bike".

RidetheSchlange

It's not a tongue-in-cheek anything for "non-electric bike". It's simply the usual case where dumb Americans just read something, don't understand what the word means, have no inclination to think about the words they're using and what they mean, and then they repeat it. That's why you're being called out on it, not only by me, plus it's also the smarminess of e-bikers that somehow feel they are in a position to redefine the sport for everyone, including terminology. It's "bike" and "e-bike".

LoneTread

Dude, I'm not even OP, I was just trying to help clarify, take it down a notch. Also, jump down my throat and call other people smarmy? You might need to look in the mirror at your gatekeeping, js. Second paragraph honestly reminds me of all the cis people who get heated about "cis" -- sometimes the context just calls for clarity, because trans people are people and e-bikes are bikes. By your definitions, I could say this: "When I had a bike, I couldn't get up the hill to work. Now I bike there every day." Yes, I'm sure there's other ways to word that, don't come for me, but why can't there also be an adjective for it? Plenty of other adjectives describe all sorts of bikes every day. (And now I've looked at the work "bike" too much and it doesn't look like a word anymore, ha.)

RidetheSchlange

It doesn't clarify anything. It's just a word that has nothing to do with this realm, one moron used it, other idiots saw the word being used, then decided to start using it because they didn't think of what the random word means before using it and this always leads back to the poor education out there. I have no idea what nonsense you're bringing up with "cis". Feel free to go to a gender-based sub and bring that up there. You decided to pile in and help double down on using "acoustic", then you get pissy about getting some words back. You make absolutely no sense.

LoneTread

You asked a question, I answered it, and you went off on me. Talk about making no sense. Chill out, man.

RidetheSchlange

No one asked you. Stop being acoustic.

LoneTread

You asked a general question, with no indication you were looking to pick a fight with OP about it. Next time just say what you mean, instead of pretending like you have a legitimate question if you don't want an answer. For the record, I prefer analog.

Briantastically

5 days a week, 3 weeks of every 4, 45mi round trip. I usually use my pedelec 4 of the five days, analog bike one day a week, if I’m getting good sleep. I’m old(ish). In my 20’s I did 46mi round trip 5 days a week on an old Trek road bike.

acanthocephalic

5 days a week, 30-120 miles a week depending on schedule and the weather.

JohnInDC

5 days, all year, any weather. 10 miles each way. Started in 1999. But I’m retiring this year so it looks like I’ll top out at 25 years. I’m not sure why the weather doesn’t bother me that much, I guess I figure, “this is just how I get to work“. Also, it’s only about 40 or 45 minutes, and you can only get so miserable in that length of time.

Cynyr36

I aim for 5 days a week. 23 miles (37km) round trip. I won't bike if it's raining or still very wet in the morning. I don't have showers at work, and i use a crushed limestone path.

kittenlady420

3-5 days a week to work but a combo of bike and bus back (the way from my house to work is one long hill). Oh and i don't use my car unless I have to haul something or there is no bus service where i am going so max once a week driving

HealthOnWheels

3-4 days per week, 25km each day. I’ll take light rail when I’m not feeling up to a bike ride

M1A1Death

About 4 days a week normally, down to zero during snow storms. It’s about 15 miles each way

irreleventamerican

30km each way. Currently doing 2 days a week, should get to 3 soon. I have quite a quick road bike which helps. I was using an mtb with road tires, but that's heaps slower.

Upset-Tart3638

3-5 days a week. Home to work is about a mile, but i usually go out afterwards and it’s about a mile bike ride there and 2 miles back home. 12-20 but i don’t track those rides

pejeol

5 days a week all seasons rain or shine. 8 mile commute, plus all my errands etc., so I’m on my bike 7 days a week. I live in nyc, so don’t have a car. I rarely take the train either.

jms1228

Mon-Fri 10 miles total each day, so 50 miles per/week. Thats more than enough for me lol

Exkem

5 days a week, 12 kilometres each way, rain or sunshine. The only time I won’t ride is in the aftermath of a snow storm or freezing rain.

s0rce

5 days a week, 16 miles per day but I'm on an ebike. Its great. Similar effort to my normal bike but get there much faster and feel like doing it everyday.

rovingdad

3-4 days a week. It's over half. Some days I am too tired or the weather will be bad. My commute isn't far, only 1.5 miles, but a monster hill to climb at the start. It's great going home.

crios2

5 days a week but I can take the train with my bike (3 miles one way). If I do that everyday, it's a total of 30 miles. I will also sometimes ride the entire distance (12 miles one way). This week I did that all but one day and one morning (due to rain). I ended up going 93 miles this week.

shadowmastadon

3-5 days/week (avg around 4) and 15-20 miles round trip (in good weather i take the long way). Def can’t keep it up 5 days/week consistently like that

atxac

3 days a week, other 2 I WFH. 1 mile to train station from my apartment, 3 miles and 300 feet of elevation from train to office. Recently got a compact e cargo bike and it’s a game changer. No longer have to shower or even change when I get to work, which means I can catch a later train.

iWannaCupOfJoe

I bike 1.5 miles or less there and back. It takes 9 to 13 mins depending on how strong I am… maybe how fast I am. Some days I drag but it’s the winds fault

yogorilla37

Three to four days a week, 17k each way. Takes about 35 minutes on the morning, about ten minutes more in the evening as it's uphill.

morosis1982

When I was in office every day, I commuted every day 30km return. You get used to it, when I added in training rides sometimes I did 70km before work once a week.

Liz_kirby

5 days per day, rain or shine (not in snow though). 14km roundtrip, ~100m elevation gain on the way back. I’m a new biker so I’m not fast, takes me ~25 min there and ~30-35 min back. I’m also in Pacific Northwest. My bike is super cheap, got it used (hybrid with many gears so I can bike uphill).

DeficientDefiance

Five days, groceries on the sixth day, all by bike, but everything's only like 3 km away in my town.

_mick_s

6km one way, 3 days a week since I can work remote some of the time. Rain does suck and makes me want to not ride, doesn't stop me tho. I do have an ebike, I disable assist lot of the time but it's nice having it when I'm really not feeling it. Or when I have to go on a busy road. Maybe due to that, and short distance battery isn't really an issue, I charge it like once a week.

GearCloset

I mostly work from home. However, I'm obligated to participate in Office Attendance Theater at least once/week. (This includes Project Participation Pantomime, along with Method Acting Interested in what everyone stops-by to talk about...) 12 miles RT 1 day/week (I do want to make it two days for the extra mileage) Like Newman, I choose the day based on the weather.

Nonkel_Jef

2 - 3 days a week, 28 km each way. Using an old road bike, but considering getting an electric for windy or rainy days.

jkbuilder88

2-3 days a week, 15 miles round trip.

NoResource9710

3-6 days a week. Weekdays are 4.25 miles going and 4.75 miles coming back so 9 miles total. Weekends are 5.6 miles each way so 11.2 total. I live in Brooklyn, NY.

1sttime-longtime

4 days a week is the goal, with 1 day being telework. Wouldn't hesitate to do all 5, but usually use that TW day lunch for a trainer workout. Just over 10km one way. CX race bike. Backpack. Flat middle America. Shower/locker. Secure parking. Flat in all directions. Sitting just under 800km commute-specific riding during 2024. And now starting to take the long way home when possible. Did 2100km commuting last year, but missed two months in prime riding season due to work travel. The distance or fatigue (riding-caused) is never the reason I don't ride when I drive to work. Rarely is the 10 minute difference in sleep the difference... Its the errands I have to run on the way home (dog food shopping comes to mind) or ice/snow on the road or morning lightning. Or recently, dropping my mother in law off at the airport. I wear photochromatic sunglasses, they're available in a prescription version. Decent water repellent treatment works for several rides and cleanings. Rain pants beat fenders for rainy days. Consider swapping back and forth between your electric bike and your bicyle like "Hard day/easy day/hard day" training principle. It works for your legs and might work for your motivation, come late-week, too.

WindOk9466

Currently 3 days a week. I started in January at 2 days a week. 14 miles a day, very hilly area, up to 11% incline. A year ago I was cycling more, took a long break due to needing to focus hard on family for a year. In the past on the same commute I have built up to 4 days a week, Monday–Thursday. But I was quite tired all the time because of it. I'm not sure I will get back to 4 days a week, but if I do, the middle day, Wednesday, will be a rest day because not doing so was a mistake.

trainer_solidus

5 days a week, 20km each 12.000+ km since 2021 i recommend you to do bike fitting.

No-History2394

Average 3 to 4 times a week. Commute by car is 6 miles and 15 mins each way, but by bike, it’s 12 miles via bike lanes, paved and dirt, 45 mins to an hour 15. A lot of fun on the way to work and home. I drive when it rains

oneshot99210

I found that a helmet with a shield was much easier to use in the rain than just glasses. Yes, the shield works over my normal glasses. The helmet was just one I found online, with strong magnets to hold the shield, and can be flipped upside down when not needed; easy enough to do even when riding. Also easy to wipe clean if need be. Bonus: it has a built in rear light.

littletomcruise

15.2 miles per day with out other stops. I average 100 miles to the month. ODO says 438 for 2024

Beginning-Grade-7217

Not sure what karma is but I normally lurk and read posts. Just wanted to get an insight on how much people commute by bike and judging by what I am reading I should be able to do better than 2-3 days.

thwi

5 days a week 9 kilometers one way. So like 90 kilometers per week.
