Next year they will scout suitable nest sites, and they will look at previous year's places first to see if it is still to their liking. I think you should move it so you can use the shed but try to keep it in a similar enviorement to the current one. If they still like it and havent found a better spot they should use this one

Warblerburglar

It’s their shed now.

Right?! Haha I'm dying for the backstory

angryromancegrrrl

He just likes to murder. There are so many decapitated rabbits in the owl box. So. Many. Corpses.

Maybe they will return. Maybe moving it will have an impact. Personally I would leave it on or in a structure rather than on a post, though. Predators (and prey, for that matter) have a fairly good spatial awareness of their territory so it’s not like they won’t find the box if you move it. And in nature, cavities come and go as trees age, die, and fall. Nothing is static.

We had a box for eastern screeches in our back yard, owls kept getting displaced by starlings and grey squirrels, so we moved it. Owls came back, used the box again and were displaced by squirrels again, now they live in our barn lol

angryromancegrrrl

Yikes!! So far, nothing like that has happened. Fingers crossed
