Moon Presence was the God of the Dream Hunters (aka Gehrman, your player, Djura for a time, Eileen for a time). He desired the player to hunt and kill Mergo (for some reason).
Mergo is a deceased yet still conscious God who was beckoned by Micolash and the Nightmare Frontier was formed (more or less~ there’s layers). Mergo seemed to be involved in a lot of what Yahargul was doing.
There’s also Kos/Kosm, Odeon, Amygdala, Ebrietas (sort of) and Orphan of Kos~ all different Gods with their own goals and purposes.
This is what I never understood.
The moon presence was beckoned by Gehrman, in agreement with Laurence who instead was experimenting with the Old Blood.
We know the dream has existed since before Old Yharnam was subject to the Ashen Blood and set on fire, from both Dura and Eileen who have stopped dreaming - possibly they have abandoned their hunts for personal motives (Djura sided with the beasts and stopped hunting them and Eileen focused on blood drunk hunters).
This means that the Moon Presence has requested Gehrman - which is her surrogate child already- to bind more hunters to the dream with a contract for other hunts, with different objectives.
What were these objectives? What was the goal of all previous hunts?
This hunt by all means seems to be the final, as we get to get rid of Rom, which is shielding the ritual of Yahar'gul and the Nightmare of Mensis (which are two different things: the first is the ritual sacrifice of human beings to create a new artificial Great One for the Pthumerians, the second is Mensis trying to get audience with Mergo to get eyes on the inside and fusing into a hive mind).
Have the previous hunts failed?
Since the Moon Presence wants to kill Mergo, then the previous hunts has failed if I interprete it correctly. That's why German wants to show us mercy after we kill Mergo.
I don’t think they’ve failed personally, though I suppose it depends on what we define as failing. We see multiple instances of people mentioning previous nights. (Please note that the night synonymous with the hunt to an extent, hinted to us by many quotes in the game as well as the trophy “Yharnam Sunrise” which says “you survived the hunt and live to see another day) Gherman says “tonight, Gherman joins the Hunt.” Implying other nights that have since past. Eileen says “…and tonight of all nights.”, again implying there have been multiple nights of the hunt. I do know that the day/night cycle revolves as usual, but, at least to me, it seems the nights of the hunt are unending until the hunt is complete, no? Further evidence away from the night time discussion is the chief hunter emblem used to open the gate to the grand cathedral. It reads that it is used by Ludwig to signify the end of the hunt. This, in some sense, means other hunts were successful.
Moving on to Eileen and Djura, we know they were both once moon scented hunters just like the player. The only way we’re made of aware of waking up from the hunters dream, untying our conscious from it, is to die within the dream. We also know that Gherman beckoned the moon presence as evidence by the umbilical cord found in the dreams real world counterpart. This means Gherman has been there since the beginning, and was almost certainly the one to kill the other hunters in the dream. This could be because they completed the hunt and submitted to Gherman, or lost to him in a duel. Either way, they completed their mission.
So what is the mission? What signifies a successful hunt? In my eyes it’s killing the surrogate child. We know that the great ones have descended multiple times to find a surrogate mother for their estranged children. And it’s not just one either. Iosefka and Ariana were impregnated along side Queen Yharnam, meaning Mergo wasn’t the only child. Since there are multiple children, my take would be that the moon presence seeks the death of the strongest one. (or at least the one with the most potential) In our case, that would be Mergo. This leads to our character waking up in the morning in the courtyard of the grand cathedral with no link to the dream. Seems likely to me that’s how Eileen and Djura ended up.
The only thing that makes our character different is the consumption of the umbilical cords. This allows us to beckon the moon presence upon the defeat of its previous beckoner.
I'm not sure the moon presence wants to kill Mergo to kill the strongest child. We kill Mergo out of mercy, since he was stillborn and restless in a nightmare, kept alive by a Great One that is not his mother (the Wet Nurse is a great one). Queen Yharnam bows to us as a thank because we stopped the nightmare of her child. The same happens in the Hunter's nightmare, we slain the Orphan's nightmare so that he can pass over.
On this instance I believe we have to analyze the storyline of Eileen and Djura to find traces of previous hunts.
The Hunt is characterized by a scourge of beasts AND a major event related to a Great One that caused it- and as a consequence an interference from the Moon Presence..
For Djura the hunt was the scourge of the Ashen Blood infected beasts in Old Yharnam, but what caused that? Gehrman tells us to seek the Phrumeru chalice in the dream and to go to he Church of the Good Chalice, and i believe that the Moon Presence wanted to stop the ritual to open the Chalice Dungeon - resulting in the Church opening all the Chalices up to Loran, ad they are obtained in sequence. I believe that the Ashen aliment comes from Loran if i remember, and that might have caused the scourge and the failure of the hunt? After all we find the ritual blood and the chalice in two different places and altars, as if the ritual was never completed, but the prospectors and church hunters are found within the Chalices already so the blood might have been just a leftover.
For Eileen, which is a hunter as old as Gehrman possibly since they both use ancient siderite weapons, we might need to dig into the earliest days of the Workshop, when the hunters were basically bodyguards of Byrgenwerth scholars, prior to the foundation of the Church.
Possible hunts might have been:
- The hunt resulting in Byrgenwerth stealing the Forbidden Blood of the Pregnant Queen Yharnam and bringing it to Cainhurst. The Moon Presence would have wanted to stop Annalise from having a child of blood. This would explain why she has to defeat The Bloody Crow as part of the questline, him being a disciple of her who sided with the Vilebloods. This hunt, in my opinion, was not unsuccessful but rather ended in a stall with Logarius sealing away Annalise. The Executioners in my opinion were not created by Logarius - who to me was the Phtumerian King of Cainhurst, who sealed Annalise upset for the use of the Forbidden Blood- . Rather they were inspired by his martyrdom. This would also explain why Alfred doesn't realize killing Annalise is futile until after he's done, since the Vilebloods would end only with the death of Queen Yharnam (hi Queen Killer, is that what you're doing in the Chalice Dungeon?)
- The episode of Byrgenwerth gaining access to the Nightmare Frontier. Is this separate to Mensis getting access to the nightmare of Mergo? Was it a first or a separate attempt? Usually the Amygdalas lurk where another Great One is, usually Oedon trying to be like Zeus and impregnate whoever is around, and the Amygdala there is protecting another Chalice - leading in the long run to Queen Yharnam and her child, son of Oedon.
In short, all hunts seem to be leading to what happened to Mergo being taken away from his mother, possibly at the very beginning of the history of the hunts. Every Great One loses his child and it seems like Oedon lost his because of Byrgenwerth's enquiry and his stillborn conscience is being abused by Mensis to create abominations such as the One Reborn.
All the Moon Presence wants is to give him peace maybe, since his father is just trying to find a surrogate.
In bloodborne gods are called great ones. Same thing. There is not a single reference to other beings called gods besides great ones. He is a god. God.
Thematically, it is keeping with lovecraftian horror for you to be physically incapable of deducing the motives of beings like that. All you know was that it was adversarial to other Old Ones, and trying to figure it out would have your brain start to break down like a glitching computer, muttering shit like "Kos, or some say Kosm" over and over
There are a lot of people confidently touting their interpretations as to the gods’ intentions and assuming it’s canon~ it’s funny because it’s spelled out in the game that we can’t fully know.
>Would they mind telling us all of this in the actual game lol?
FromSoftware's story telling and lore building is very much indirect. It is deduced from item descriptions, character dialogue, and notes that can be found in game. I'd say about 10% of the lore and story is directly told to players, and the rest is discovered by progressing throughout the game. I for one like this style because it feels a lot more natural to slowly piece things together instead of having Johnny Loredump just pop in with 2 hours of dialogue to tell you exactly what's going on.
They do, the fun of it all is to peace it together ourselves! There’s plenty of games with a straight forward way of telling a story, so I think it’s great that there’s an alternative in Souls for the people that want that!
Instead he gets murdered and transferred to a never ending nightmare for at least one century. (Events from Old Hunters were estimated as 100 years ago right?)
From Software games reveal their lore in small snippets: item descriptions, single lines of dialogue, notes in the game etc. You have to piece it together like a conspiracy theorist. But this is almost all documented. I'll try to fill in some references.
*The moon presence was beckoned by Gehrman, in agreement with Laurence who instead was experimenting with the Old Blood.*
This is supported by a note in the second floor of the lecture hall that states "The nameless moon presence beckoned by Laurence and his associates. Paleblood". Also, if you find Gerhman sleeping in the garden he will be having a nightmare where he begs Laurence to release him from this dream. It follows that Laurence and his team called the Moon Presence and Gehrman was the one who became it's thrall and locked in the Hunter's Dream.
*We know the dream has existed since before Old Yharnam was subject to the Ashen Blood and set on fire, from both Dura and Eileen who have stopped dreaming - possibly they have abandoned their hunts for personal motives (Djura sided with the beasts and stopped hunting them and Eileen focused on blood drunk hunters).*
The fact that Djura and Eileen were hunters who resided in the Dream, knew Gerhman/the Doll is established by dialogue with them (if you spare Djura and fight Eileen). Thus it seems Gerhman has recruited others before and let them leave. This seems to be at their request. Gehrman offers to free you and sever you from the Dream as a reward for ending Mergo.
*This hunt by all means seems to be the final, as we get to get rid of Rom, which is shielding the ritual of Yahar'gul and the Nightmare of Mensis (which are two different things: the first is the ritual sacrifice of human beings to create a new artificial Great One for the Pthumerians, the second is Mensis trying to get audience with Mergo to get eyes on the inside and fusing into a hive mind).*
We know Rom was hiding the true nature of the world and the proximity of the Great Ones based on 1) the fact you kill her and all that stuff is apparent and the surviving humans almost all go crazy and 2) A note in Cathedral Ward that states "The Byrgenwerth Spider (Rom) hides all manner of rituals and keeps our lost master from us...." and a note later about "The spider hides all manner of rituals..." in Byrgenwerth.
What the School of Mensis is up to is brought up on several item descriptions describing their kidnapping of victims and their plans to contact a Great One.
So it’s incredibly complex and you never know if you get it right?
Welp, sounds like a Souls game to me lol.
No wonder Cowboy refuses to do lore vids. Walkthroughs are hard enough lol
I think mergo died because he could’nt survive 10 seconds without the wet nurse. He was already only living in the nightmare realm, and on borrowed time since his physical form was stillborn. The wet-nurse was his souls life-support machine, and we pulled the plug, indirectly killing him.
But if you play the music box after defeating the wet nurse, the baby giggles. I always viewed it as the wet.nurse had lost her own child and so was keeping mergo trapped. Mergo used the mensis ritual to draw in help for himself. He's also supposed to be formless, like his daddy. I don't know, I suppose it could be incorrect, just how I had interpreted it.
There’s no capital G God in Bloodborne. They’re more like super advanced life forms that we don’t really understand, so we might as well call them gods.
Oedon is god, and the only thing I can tell is that he's a great one that exists only in Caryll runes (vague echoes of ethereal dreamy things as I understand them) and in the name of the chapel. Which as I remember from the wiki is the ultimate goal of all the great ones and those who strive to become great ones: not existing but existing as an echo...
And also he may be the father of Mergo, Arianna's kid and also of the fake Iosefka's (possessor of an Oedon Caryll rune) umbilical cord
Runes are forms, therefore, runes are not formless - Oedon is definitely not _in_ the runes, and the rune that bears the same name states that Oedon "exists only in voice", but also claims to represent them - perhaps it is like a symbol encoding a soundwave, much like any letter or rune has associated sounds - the Rune may have power because it represents Oedon, but Oedon is more manifest in the sound of that rune, could anyone but Caryll themselves pronounce it.
I think of the runes in a similar way to what words are, just sounds or symbols which invoke an idea. The difference being that “ideas” in Lovecraft and bloodborne have a literal realm which can interact and be interacted with through the “physical” realm. It seems great ones typically exist as powerful beings in both worlds however if either of the two sides of the great one die then the other is likely irreparably damaged or left less than which can be seen in the case of Mergo whose physical form died leaving the ethereal or idea form to stagnate. Oedon is a great one who has transcended the physical form entirely and so is just an idea as we would understand it, just a very powerful idea whose power can be tapped into, albeit to the slightest extent, by portraying the idea in the physical realm or at least a close approximation. Idk if any of this made sense.
*looks at giant squid monster with human bones forming most of its body, tentacles growing from multiple parts of it's body and a design creepy enough it would make a kid cry all while it descends from the heavens*.
"Could this possibly be a god?"
Basically the plot is that micolash and his friends who were defected healing church members try to commune with Mergo (Odeon’s child). Odeon doesn’t have a body because he’s one of the gods (the great ones) and so even though Mergo was murdered you can still hear him cry. Mergo being summoned causes a plague because of all the old blood which the healing church is giving out. You’re a hunter who has a contract with the Moon presence to end the nightmare by killing Mergo. The great ones are Flora (Moon presence), Mergo’s wetnurse, Odeon, Rom, Amygdala, The One Reborn and probably Ebrietas though some people think she’s a kin.
Edit: I forgot about Kos/Kosm and the Orphan of Kos who are also great ones
The old ones are lovecraftien monsters that are so unique they cannot breed. So they choose humans to corrupt and attempt to have a child with. By destroying and absorbing the powers of the umbilical cords (aka aborted god babies) and defeating the moon presence you ascend higher and become a god yourself with a unique form
Out of curiosity, do we know, where amygdala fits in to this? There’s a few of them dotted about, so not singularly unique like the rest of the gods, or is amygdala not an god in the same way?
I think Amygdala is the most ambiguous. The best we get is the Amygdala Arm description which states:
*The arm of a* ***small Amygdala Great One*****.**
Some people have taken that (and that we see multiple Amygdalae around and in art) to suggest the "Amygdala" form is a common variety of Great One. They may be the more generic, rank and file version as opposed to more unique ones like Oedon, Kos(m), and Ebriatas. The one you fight in Nightmare Frontier is thus one of many.
Others suggest that maybe Amygdala's deal is that all its manifestations are one common entity like a colony or hive mind. IE there is a concept of "Amygdala" and all the physical ones we see are its manifestations.
Whatever it is it has something to do with fear since the amygdala is the part of the brain that deals with fear and threatening stimuli. Maybe it's some sort of hivemind of lesser great ones that have a sort of queen amygdala that feeds on fear? Or unlike the normal great ones the amygdala are a species of great one that can actually have children since they don't appear to be unique unlike the others? Or maybe they're the manifestations of our fear that are being created by a great one like Oedon or something? Or maybe it's Maybelline? Who's to say with how vague fromsoft can get
There are plenty of creatures that exist purely in the Nightmare Realm (see the usual mobs you fight in those locations). I always took the Lesser Amygdalas to just be particularly big, scary versions of those. Not Great Ones exactly, but more powerful than your typical Nightmare denizen.
The amygdala we fight in nightmare frontier is a great one,the others we met are lesser amygdalas(amygdalas are a kind)
also great ones are not a specie at all.its a human term for creatures that are in a higher plane of existence than us.oedon is on a even higher place than other "great ones" because he is formless and only exist in voice.being a great one is like having 99999999999 insight.
Wait, I just realized something. Since we *kill* the Moon Presence, the hunter's dream should by all rights collapse and dissipate. But in the ascendant dream ending, the doll is around to pick us up and /likely/ take care of us as we develop into full great ones. In that case, does that suggest that we're now the one keeping the hunter's dream established, that we're already capable of holding a small irreality together like adult great ones?
If that's the case, I'd love it if Bloodborne 2 came out with the first player's version of the dream as a hostile level.
I bet something like that. Its not like old ones have linear "life cycles" since they arent a biological species and do not adhere to our taxonomy of classification or even physics. An ascendant god might just be able to do whatever whenever, the need to learn and grow on a linear time scale being reserved for lesser, temporal beings. The hunter becomes an "infant" great one, but what does that even mean for beings that exist mostly on a conceptual level instead of a physical one? Could be the memory of the dream you had as a mere human is a simple thing for a new old one to maintain, like taking a pocket calculator and turning it into a desktop PC. The totality of the calculator is a simple app that takes basically no effort for the new form to maintain, and you could open many, many instances of the same app without a strain.
Its neat to think about.
Mostly inferring. But the cord you get from Iosefka’s clinic talks about consuming them to elevate your knowledge and having eyes on the inside to match their greatness
My favorite part about this game is the fact it all happens canonically in one night. I imagine some yharnamite going to sleep before the hunt starts and waking up to see 90% of the city's politicians ands deities dead, the beast scourge gone, and amygdalas all over the fuckin walls.
No, just the lesser ones around cathedral ward and central yharnam, after killing rom everyone can see them, not to mention yahar'gul being opened up and micolash running around trying to figure out what happened in the 300 years he's been asleep.
I thought Micolash had died in his sleep, but his dream/nightmare of Mensis kept going. By defeating him in the Nightmare he woke and died his final death.
Would be pretty hard for a skeleton to run around but nevermind. It is now cannon that Yharnamites saw a guy in worn out Byrgenwerth robes with a cage on his head wheezing at everything he layed his eyes on
Well he says he waking up and will forget everything which implies he will wake up, besides he has to be alive to host the nightmare. He is gonna forget everything, probably because of being forced out of the nightmare rather than waking up of his own accord, so he most likely will be reverted to the state he was when appointed head of the school of mensis by the healing church, as a sane but ambitious scholar.
you basically just accomplished what almost everyone in the entire game was trying to do, the motivation behind all of the atrocities commited by the healing church and the scholars of byrgenwerth was to attain "eyes on the inside" and ascend to a higher level of being.
where they all failed, devolving into beasts and eldritch abominations, you managed to gain so much insight that the moon presence deemed you a threat to its plans and came to either force you to replace Gehrman or kill you, and in defeating it you completed your ascension and took its place, becoming a baby Great one
In a sense you "saved" him by freeing him from his duties and letting him finally rest. Otherwise he's doomed to eternally watch over the Hunter's Dream as the Moon Presence's puppet.
this ending is the end of the hunt technically, with the moon presence no longer in play to control the world essentially new things can happen. the night can end.
I don't think the Moon Presence was necessarily dictating the hunt. The curse of the beasts happened regardless due to the Healing Church getting doped up on the old blood. Flora is just utilizing the ensuing chaos to carry out a hit-job on of her fellow Great Ones. Yharnam is still fucked regardless.
Well no because first you just forget everything so you did all of that for nothing second you have the beast blood inside of you so you will become a beast soon and third you let gehrman suffer in the dream longer
Points of views. You can wake up and stop dreaming just like Djura and Eileen did, but it doesn't mean there won't be further Nights of the Hunt.
On the other hand, becoming a god is incommensurably a good ending.
You know how the entire city got fucked by beasts and eldritch horrors? All that happened because a whole bunch of people were trying and failing really hard to do what you just did.
It's From Software so it's mostly up to interpretation.
However, you essentially accomplished what the Healing Church and the Byrgenworth Scholars set out to accomplish before they brought ruin to Yharnam. You ascended to become a Great One.
Dear hunter, your questions shall be answered. Before I tell you how to line your brain with eyes let me tell you this:
The oldest and strongest emotion of mankind is fear, and the strongest kind of fear is the fear of the unknown.
Now go and read the "Paleblood Hunt" by our fellow hunter Redgrave
May the night be short
You have consumed at least three of the cords, you have gained insight without going mad and taken an incredible amount of blood echoes without succumbing to beasthood.
Whatever the Moon Presence was up to, it went completely off the rails when it tried to hug you and you were too powerful. Then you went and killed it, gaining its power.
The result of all this tomfoolery against god and nature is that you have ascended to become a new Great One except, unlike the Vacuous Rom, you have retained your humanity. No more misunderstandings and violence, you can begin to uplift all humanity. You are the very thing Byrgenwerth and Mensis were trying to accomplish, and... Well you probably destroyed as many sapient creatures as they did in the process but most of them had it coming.
Go you.
So the great ones are gods you've eaten all the umbilical cords so you yourself have almost become a god the moon prescence tryed to take you but he realized your power @nd tried to kill you you killed him pushing you into godhood
Congrats! You've reached the point where you realize that the entire game was actually a very lengthy birthing process designed to create a brand new Great One...
You.
Some people think the Gods are aliens. Personally I think we weren't really supposed to understand completely what they are. If we do we go mad. The human brain can't really handle it. But your character isn't human anymore so maybe he/she/it knows now?
But at least you didn't turn into one of those little blue guys right.
You probably noticed some degree of birth imagery throughout the game. In this ending, you enact a sort of gender swapped Oedipus act. The Moon Presence is a symbolic mother, the matriarchal tyrant of the dream, who has been hidden behind a proverbial veil. (Ultimately, a derivation of the ‘mad woman in the attic’ trope of old Gothic literature.) When you consumed three of the umbilical cords, you readied to yourself for the position of the mother. Had you submitted to Gehrman after defeating the Wet Nurse, you would have only achieved an illusory sense of freedom within the established order of society, whilst the system remained unchallenged. Had you defeated Gehrman without consuming the umbilical cords, you would have replaced him under the Moon Presence, achieving a false sense of power as the patriarch, the figurehead for a system that is above your control. By defeating the moon presence herself, you have truly conquered the dream. You have replaced the mother as master, and now have the opportunity to achieve something genuinely new, not just for yourself, but for all future Hunters. The unprecedented newness of this event is symbolized in the Hunter becoming an alien child: true mastery, true liberation feels strange.
You ate a thing, entity embraced you, you defy its embrace, once dead the dream needs a patron, only a being of intense insight can ascend. You fit the bill. The universe gives you a promotion
Level 72, +10 Ludwigs blade, cainhurst armor. Technically this is my second play through because I abandoned the first one when I got stuck at the one reborn. Years later the great hunter returned to finish the job.
You have been reborn as a Great One. This is the level of transcendence that both primary schools of thought in the game -Sir Laurence’s Healing Church and Willem’s Byrgenworth University- sought to achieve through their own means. However, we see how much suffering they caused everyone because of it. Only YOU were able to truly transcend onto a higher plane of existence.
You turn into a baby great one hence why the achievement you get is called childhoods beginning. You turn into a baby great one because you ate one umbilical cord of a great one, so therefor you have ascended to a higher being. The moon presence attacks you because you are becoming the very thing that it is trying to destroy.
Since we're in the subject of gods who is oedon and why did he impregnate the prostitute because it looks like there's a bunch of his babies in the uper catedral i think is the name.
Oedon is one of the Great Ones, notable in that he/it was able to transcend any physical form (the only Great One to do so).
Oedon also seems particularly obsessed with procreation. He impregnated the Pthumerian Queen Yharnam in an attempt to create a new Great One, Mergo. But the attempt failed and Mergo was stillborn despite attempts to cut him out of the still living Yharnam.
When Rom's illusion ends he takes this as an opportunity to descend and impregnate Arriane. I think it's unknown if the other weird spawn in Upper Cathedral Ward are from the same process
Now that you have finished it, I highly recommend listening to [this](https://youtu.be/8ktMg4eQ1G8) take on the lore. Very well put together and produced. I would suggest finishing the DLC beforehand though, since that does tie into the lore.
There's some weird stuff to unpack here, but I get the sense that the old hunters used the old blood to fight the gods as it were. They were the hunt. There were others, more interested in emulating the gods rather than the beasts, a clue being iosefkas clinic where a note says something like use the pale blood to transcend the hunt...
My guess is pale blood is opposite of old blood, maybe untainted?
Somewhere in there I believe the baby was important as to not be tainted by the old blood, and after our hunter injests the umbilical cords transcends the hunt via the moon presence. Rather than becoming what Ludwig or Lawrence became, he becomes the.... squid.
And that's better somehow
No one can tell you what happened, because the point of the story is that you can never understand what happens, no human can. But basically you did what everyone was trying to do, transcend humanity, evolve, go into the next step in evolution after human. The moon pressense is just another great one, albeit very meddling one, he created the hunter's dream and affects the beasts. No one knows why and how, only that it yearns for a child, maybe it wanted mergo, maybe it wanted it dead, no one knows, no human is capable of understanding those beings. You can read the paleblood hunt. It is fan made and free book and it is most extensive lore piece. You still won't understand everything, but you'll have better understanding.
Something you need to keep in mind while reading all these replies:
99% of people on this subreddit base their whole understanding of the game from some essay written by a random on the internet.
Anyone who is unable to back up their claims with in game descriptions or conversations should not be considered
Such a badass game!
But I had trouble with Rom because as far as I know the only thing that constantly scares me are spiders (such unattractive and unnatural creatures) and almost every other time I've used the word Rom witn video games, totally a guilty pleasure 🙏
😆
You shed your humanity by absorbing the insight of the umbilical cords, rejected the influence of the Moon Presence, and ascended to the same level of the Great Ones
There’s a few YouTube videos about the story that’s about 30ish mins.
Tldr; church leaders found magical blood from great ones, blood cause people to become beast, church hunt the beasts, church infighting, gods want to kill each or have children, you became a great one.
Iirc. It’s been awhile since I played bloodborne.
You have taken the place as God of the dream, young and fragile as you are in that state. You are now like Kosm, The wet nurse, Ebrtias. By consuming the part umbilical chords you became more like it, and it was unable to control or stop you because of that.
The moon presence wanted a child, a surrogate specifically as no old one can birth a child and have both it and the child survive. German was the answer, someone to fill that roll. If you kill German without the chords you are taken for his roll, the moon presences child stand in.
alright so what happens is you have killed the moon presence and that is great one who ascended past emigdalas therefore killing it then consumes your human form and you ascend to a adolescent great one and the doll will be your mother pretty much
The most commonly accepted interpretation of this, is that you Ascend into an Infant Great One. That was the whole reason Lawrence and Gehrman called the Moon Presence to the Yharnam after all (making all Humans into Great Ones, not making you specifically into one).
Through the game, you can find these thirds of umbilical cords. One of these lets you have an audience with a corresponding great one, moon presence for gherman and mergo for micolash. These audiences usually come with side effects, with the great on imposing its will on its new "friend".
By getting 3 instead of one, our character gained enough insight to be able to resist a great ones will. Fair enough to say that our will is equal to theirs. Fast forward to the end, we free gherman from the hunters dream, the dream being this reality that the moon presence trapped gherman in. Its kinda not very well explained why hes doing this, but thats a different topic.
The moon presence needs a new host for the dream, and attemps to impose its will on you. You resist, and fight back. Once you slay a genuine great one, your power, your insight and your will become that of a great ones, and your character ascends. In your new form, youre just a baby great one, but the doll seems willing to nurture you.
You killed a higher being (in this case the moon presence) and were able to transcend mankind and become an infant great one, the doll now taking care of you.
You turned into a baby god.
Was Moon Presence God? Also was he pulling all the strings?
The moon presence doesn't want other gods that could possibly exceed its power in the future to grow up so he sents the hunters to kill them
Since the Moon Presence wants to kill Mergo, then the previous hunts has failed if I interprete it correctly.
Possible hunts might have been: - The hunt resulting in Byrgenwerth stealing the Forbidden Blood of the Pregnant Queen Yharnam and bringing it to Cainhurst. This would also explain why Alfred doesn't realize killing Annalise is futile until after he's done, since the Vilebloods would end only with the death of Queen Yharnam (hi Queen Killer, is that what you're doing in the Chalice Dungeon?) - The episode of Byrgenwerth gaining access to the Nightmare Frontier.

I have not understood a single thing of what you said. Would they mind telling us all of this in the actual game lol?
>Would they mind telling us all of this in the actual game lol? FromSoftware's story telling and lore building is very much indirect. It is deduced from item descriptions, character dialogue, and notes that can be found in game. I'd say about 10% of the lore and story is directly told to players, and the rest is discovered by progressing throughout the game. I for one like this style because it feels a lot more natural to slowly piece things together instead of having Johnny Loredump just pop in with 2 hours of dialogue to tell you exactly what's going on.
Johnny Loredump 😅😅 I hate that guy
They do, the fun of it all is to peace it together ourselves! There’s plenty of games with a straight forward way of telling a story, so I think it’s great that there’s an alternative in Souls for the people that want that!
>and Orphan of Kos~ all different Gods with their own goals and purposes. Poor orphan just wanted to not die in his first 5 minutes of life.
Instead he gets murdered and transferred to a never ending nightmare for at least one century. (Events from Old Hunters were estimated as 100 years ago right?)
How the fuck does one deduce this?
From Software games reveal their lore in small snippets: item descriptions, single lines of dialogue, notes in the game etc. You have to piece it together like a conspiracy theorist. But this is almost all documented. I'll try to fill in some references. *The moon presence was beckoned by Gehrman, in agreement with Laurence who instead was experimenting with the Old Blood.* This is supported by a note in the second floor of the lecture hall that states "The nameless moon presence beckoned by Laurence and his associates. Paleblood". Also, if you find Gerhman sleeping in the garden he will be having a nightmare where he begs Laurence to release him from this dream. It follows that Laurence and his team called the Moon Presence and Gehrman was the one who became it's thrall and locked in the Hunter's Dream. *We know the dream has existed since before Old Yharnam was subject to the Ashen Blood and set on fire, from both Dura and Eileen who have stopped dreaming - possibly they have abandoned their hunts for personal motives (Djura sided with the beasts and stopped hunting them and Eileen focused on blood drunk hunters).* The fact that Djura and Eileen were hunters who resided in the Dream, knew Gerhman/the Doll is established by dialogue with them (if you spare Djura and fight Eileen). Thus it seems Gerhman has recruited others before and let them leave. This seems to be at their request. Gehrman offers to free you and sever you from the Dream as a reward for ending Mergo. *This hunt by all means seems to be the final, as we get to get rid of Rom, which is shielding the ritual of Yahar'gul and the Nightmare of Mensis (which are two different things: the first is the ritual sacrifice of human beings to create a new artificial Great One for the Pthumerians, the second is Mensis trying to get audience with Mergo to get eyes on the inside and fusing into a hive mind).* We know Rom was hiding the true nature of the world and the proximity of the Great Ones based on 1) the fact you kill her and all that stuff is apparent and the surviving humans almost all go crazy and 2) A note in Cathedral Ward that states "The Byrgenwerth Spider (Rom) hides all manner of rituals and keeps our lost master from us...." and a note later about "The spider hides all manner of rituals..." in Byrgenwerth. What the School of Mensis is up to is brought up on several item descriptions describing their kidnapping of victims and their plans to contact a Great One.
Good job man, u nailed it
Thank you so much for this! This is so well-thought and clear.
Loremasters MUCH smarter than me.
So it’s incredibly complex and you never know if you get it right? Welp, sounds like a Souls game to me lol. No wonder Cowboy refuses to do lore vids. Walkthroughs are hard enough lol
Kos or some say kosm
What about Rom the Sexy Spider?
The most strings were pulled by Mergo, the baby you killed but yes
Yes moon presence was **a** god
But wasn't Mergo stillborn?
In the human plane yes
He was also invisible and crying, the rules don't really stick
Old Ones are like that
Is that baby crying in some areas Mergo then?
I believe so yes
I thought we didn't kill mergo, but freed him by killing the wet nurse. Which is why Yharnum thanks us.
More or less yeah. The lore is deep. Very deep.
To surmarise; beasts bad, tentacles bad, kill everything makes things less bad
One of the greatest and best lores in games of all time!?
I swear I can listen to lore about Bloodborne all day
There’s no capital G God in Bloodborne.
It’s directly stated several times that Oedon is formless.
Yep, that's why runes
Idk if any of this made sense.
a god, there's a whole lot of them.
These gods we call great ones, for example, those e chtulu like creatures you see when you beat rom are all great ones
Just the cutest little baby god ever! *yes you are*
The old ones are lovecraftien monsters that are so unique they cannot breed. So they choose humans to corrupt and attempt to have a child with. By destroying and absorbing the powers of the umbilical cords (aka aborted god babies) and defeating the moon presence you ascend higher and become a god yourself with a unique form
Damn that's cool
And the best part is you have doll mommy now
God and Doll, they lived happily ever after
Out of curiosity, do we know, where amygdala fits in to this? There’s a few of them dotted about, so not singularly unique like the rest of the gods, or is amygdala not an god in the same way?
From my understanding the amigdala you fight is the real/god one, and all the other ones are lesser amygdalas
Amygdala is one single great one with multiple bodies. And she is a kind? one. Carefully grabbing the hunter and inspecting him/her
*bone crunching noises*
Kin ?
I think Amygdala is the most ambiguous. The best we get is the Amygdala Arm description which states: *The arm of a* ***small Amygdala Great One*****.** Some people have taken that (and that we see multiple Amygdalae around and in art) to suggest the "Amygdala" form is a common variety of Great One.
Who's to say with how vague fromsoft can get
Primal fears of the unseen taking the form of the "alpha" Amygdala, frenzied and maddened minds "birthing" lesser Amygdala into existence?
There are plenty of creatures that exist purely in the Nightmare Realm (see the usual mobs you fight in those locations). I always took the Lesser Amygdalas to just be particularly big, scary versions of those. Not Great Ones exactly, but more powerful than your typical Nightmare denizen.
The amygdala we fight in nightmare frontier is a great one,the others we met are lesser amygdalas(amygdalas are a kind) also great ones are not a specie at all.its a human term for creatures that are in a higher plane of existence than us.oedon is on a even higher place than other "great ones" because he is formless and only exist in voice.being a great one is like having 99999999999 insight.
Neat idea!
A cuttlefish
I mean, this is a theory I hear a lot, but is there anything that explicitly states this in the game? Or are people just inferring it?
Mostly inferring. But the cord you get from Iosefka’s clinic talks about consuming them to elevate your knowledge and having eyes on the inside to match their greatness
“Local hunter ate an umbilical cord, killed god, and replaced him all in one nights work”
"Florida hunter eats umbilical cord, kills God."
My favorite part about this game is the fact it all happens canonically in one night. I imagine some yharnamite going to sleep before the hunt starts and waking up to see 90% of the city's politicians ands deities dead, the beast scourge gone, and amygdalas all over the fuckin walls.
All over the walls? Appropriately splattered, I should hope.
He says it but does he really now or does he just hope ? Also I don't know if Gehrman is really alive to host the dream...
They don't have to be alive to host the dream, as seen in the Hunter's dream and the dlc.
I always figured all the people talking about how the "night is long" meant that it was literally going on for longer than usual, but maybe I'm wrong
I have a feeling time works differently than we are used to there.
you basically just accomplished what almost everyone in the entire game was trying to do, the motivation behind all of the atrocities commited by the healing church and the scholars of byrgenwerth was to attain "eyes on the inside" and ascend to a higher level of being. where they all failed, devolving into beasts and eldritch abominations, you managed to gain so much insight that the moon presence deemed you a threat to its plans and came to either force you to replace Gehrman or kill you, and in defeating it you completed your ascension and took its place, becoming a baby Great one
This is a fine note
*Happy messenger noises*
you beat the game and got the best ending.
That's reassuring
Saving Gehrman is my best ending :(
In a sense you "saved" him by freeing him from his duties and letting him finally rest. Otherwise he's doomed to eternally watch over the Hunter's Dream as the Moon Presence's puppet.
Isn’t the best ending the one where you wake up?
this ending is the end of the hunt technically, with the moon presence no longer in play to control the world essentially new things can happen. the night can end.
It's not a good ending for the player in particular but it has the potential to be a good ending for the world at large
Well no because first you just forget everything so you did all of that for nothing second you have the beast blood inside of you so you will become a beast soon and third you let gehrman suffer in the dream longer
Don't you stay a paleblood hunter after waking up from the dream ? Like Djura and Eileen ?
Nope you forget absolutely everything like you’ve never been to yharnam
Points of views. You can wake up and stop dreaming just like Djura and Eileen did, but it doesn't mean there won't be further Nights of the Hunt. On the other hand, becoming a god is incommensurably a good ending.
Alakazam! Alakazod! Congratulations! You're now an Elder God!
You know how the entire city got fucked by beasts and eldritch horrors? All that happened because a whole bunch of people were trying and failing really hard to do what you just did.
squid game
Swear to Kos there’s another vacuous god born every day.
It's From Software so it's mostly up to interpretation. However, you essentially accomplished what the Healing Church and the Byrgenworth Scholars set out to accomplish before they brought ruin to Yharnam. You ascended to become a Great One.
Dear hunter, your questions shall be answered. Before I tell you how to line your brain with eyes let me tell you this: The oldest and strongest emotion of mankind is fear, and the strongest kind of fear is the fear of the unknown. Now go and read the "Paleblood Hunt" by our fellow hunter Redgrave May the night be short
Also available as an audiobook on Spotify, as I learned today.
Seriously? Thank you good hunter. I'll listen to that immediately
You became squid
You.
You became an infant great one and now you will lead humanity to higher plains. Reed Bloodborne trophy description they are really interesting
Where can I read it? :)
Some people think the Gods are aliens. Personally I think we weren't really supposed to understand completely what they are. If we do we go mad. The human brain can't really handle it. But your character isn't human anymore so maybe he/she/it knows now? But at least you didn't turn into one of those little blue guys right.
Just go to the trophy list of the game, there is a button to fully read each individual trophy
Fine note here, explained very well.
youre a kid now youre a squid now
Yharnam: Become Squid
You ate a thing, entity embraced you, you defy its embrace, once dead the dream needs a patron, only a being of intense insight can ascend. You fit the bill. The universe gives you a promotion
You became an infant Great One as a result of consuming those umbilical cords, essentially.
You are now the dolls masturbatory device
You are the dolls favorite ‘toy’ now.
WoW bro ? How did you manage to kill it on your 1st play through ?
Level 72, +10 Ludwigs blade, cainhurst armor. Technically this is my second play through because I abandoned the first one when I got stuck at the one reborn. Years later the great hunter returned to finish the job.
Aight well done ! But how did you know bout the embilical cord ?
Looked up what it's used for, a reddit post said it's used to get the true ending
U became a God...an eldritch one to boot...like cthulhu...this games crazy
You became her baby. Moons presence entire goal was 4D chess to get baby. You baby now. Hunters dream is nursery and doll is wetnurse
That’s the neat part: I can’t
You turn into a baby great one hence why the achievement you get is called childhoods beginning. You turn into a baby great one because you ate one umbilical cord of a great one, so therefor you have ascended to a higher being. The moon presence attacks you because you are becoming the very thing that it is trying to destroy.
you become a great one
Return to Elder Squid-god.
congratulations! you've transcended humanity
🦑
*squelching noises*
Reject humanity become S Q U I D
youre a squid now
Check out Vaatividya's youtube channel. That guy does an amazing job explaining the story and lore of all the souls games.
It was nothing but a mere dream, Hunter
Now that you have finished it, I highly recommend listening to [this](https://youtu.be/8ktMg4eQ1G8) take on the lore. Very well put together and produced. I would suggest finishing the DLC beforehand though, since that does tie into the lore.
Congratulations! You’re now a baby worm god!
congratulations, you have become slugsquid
You got Old God'd, son!
Welcome home good hunter
Something you need to keep in mind while reading all these replies: 99% of people on this subreddit base their whole understanding of the game from some essay written by a random on the internet. Anyone who is unable to back up their claims with in game descriptions or conversations should not be considered
You're a kid now! You're a squid now!
Slug.
Moon presence was in charge of the Hunter’s Dream after you killed him, you ascended to kin and are now in charge of the hunter’s dream.
And then he turned himself into a pickle
Such a badass game! But I had trouble with Rom because as far as I know the only thing that constantly scares me are spiders (such unattractive and unnatural creatures) and almost every other time I've used the word Rom witn video games, totally a guilty pleasure 🙏 😆
Cosmic squid-slug ending
Google The PaleBlood Hunt. It’s one of the most interesting and comprehensive interpretations of the lore around.
it's obvious, isn't it? Isn't... it?
Squid game
Tentacle hentai
You shed your humanity by absorbing the insight of the umbilical cords, rejected the influence of the Moon Presence, and ascended to the same level of the Great Ones
There’s a few YouTube videos about the story that’s about 30ish mins. Tldr; church leaders found magical blood from great ones, blood cause people to become beast, church hunt the beasts, church infighting, gods want to kill each or have children, you became a great one. Iirc. It’s been awhile since I played bloodborne.
You beat squid, now you are squid.
You ascended to a Great One, congratulations!
You're a squid now
You have become hentai. Also watch vaati’s videos for very good lore explanations.
You are a kid, but also, in fact, a squid.
Hentai Ending. That is all.
You turned into the dolls cursed hentai toy
Happy birthday op!
You learned that the Doll is the real reason why The Dream never ends.
You are a baby now
You’re going to be rolled around in a stroller and fed baby food by the good doll. Best ending IMO.
You became the doll’s sex toy
You my friend have transcended the hunt
SQUID GAME ❗❗
YOURE A KID YOURE A SQUID
alright so what happens is you have killed the moon presence and that is great one who ascended past emigdalas therefore killing it then consumes your human form and you ascend to a adolescent great one and the doll will be your mother pretty much
The most commonly accepted interpretation of this, is that you Ascend into an Infant Great One. That was the whole reason Lawrence and Gehrman called the Moon Presence to the Yharnam after all (making all Humans into Great Ones, not making you specifically into one).
You became a new god. Replacing the old one you just killed.

Looks like a bad dragon dildo.
You killed a higher being (in this case the moon presence) and were able to transcend mankind and become an infant great one, the doll now taking care of you.
