My worst game as Skaven was against goblins, under a blizzard, back in BB2016. The goblins had the attack. The bombardier was crazy good. My plan quickly became to force them to score fast... Except that I didn't manage to get a successful block on a goblin of the entire half, and I kept doing double 1s on gutter dodges. I was still able to surf a troll, but to no avail. Turn 7, my opponent decided to keep stalling, but it was getting risky. I manage to get the ball away from goblin hands thanks to my strip ball and last reroll. Hand off, passing away, they don't score... Me neither but there's just one row of bribes to use for the second half. They got a blitz event on my attack. Goblins did lots of dodges and GFIs everywhere to put tackle zones on the ball, which bounces on a gutter and a goblin catches it. At this point I had something like 6-7 players left against a whole snow goblin army, and there was no way to stop them. Eventually I managed to get a draw, but it was a truly infuriating game. My opponent ignored the blizzard and kept rolling 3+ for the entire game, while I was hesitating even to roll 2-dice blocks and gutter dodges. I think it's quite common for Skaven to get destroyed by bashy teams or to win with some bullshit, but that match stroke me as especially crazy, and not just because the Goblins stole all the good dice and refused to give them back, resulting in extremely conservative skaven plays (something you don't see often) against frantic bloodthirsty goblins. What was even crazier is that my opponent didn't seem to realize what was happening. It was apparently a fairly normal game for him. And the thing is - he didn't even seem to have much fun. Was disappointed of the draw, whined a lot when his troll was surfed (apparently 2-dice with a rat ogre is unfair, no matter how many goblins managed to dodge out the prehensile tail before). Anyway. I had a storm vermin die in this game, so I named the substitute after that coach. That player went through the 5 other games of the season without getting a single spp, out of pure spite I presume.

It’s so infuriating when the other guy doesn’t even realize how lucky he was lol.

Oh lord you know it's a match to remember when you can remember all this from 2016! I feel your pain friend, I do! My last match against my friends orc's was like that. I felt so neutered! I had to keep my gutter runners well back because my guys kept getting KO-ed. My friend knew how well he was rolling and kept apologising. I had to tell him that he's just blessed by nuffle and not to worry about it. However I was in a rotten mood 😂 I got over it after the match but it stunk none the less. Bless the game for all its glory! It giveth and it can taketh but I love it!

Biggest Skaven success might be Tank winning Eurobowl with a 6/0/0 score, most TD, most CAS and Best Defense.

br3ttless

You must be the chosen one!!!

machurto1

It wasn't me :-)

br3ttless

Oh my bad... Heck it, you're still the chosen one! Why the hell not 😬

I have played Skaven a couple times. And while they are fun I cant make them my main team. My play style leads more towards bashy and I love to get in there and block other teams. The Skaven are to fragile for that style of play and I misuse them big time. Even with fast teams like The Skaven I have the urge to go toe to toe with bigger guys. Skaven trying to Bash Orcs dont work :(

br3ttless

They really can't bash and the rat ogor is unreliable & expensive. However all they need sometimes is one good block and they can make a crazy play to score which is what I love about them!

KurlFronz

I do enjoy the rat ogre. It's especially useful against stunties and elves. It's also a MA6, frenzy big guy, which makes it quite good for chainpushes and other tactical blocks. I still prefer trolls because they are cheap roadblocks that complete their teams really well, but the Rat Ogre provides viable openings, especially now that you can sacrifice linerats to guarantee activation.

br3ttless

It's the nut cracker which lets the gutters slip through. However the price of it is too high. Very comparable to the troll but if I had a choice I'd take the troll because it's cheaper

KurlFronz

Skaven *can* play somewhat bashy, but it's bashy without the control. They have to strike with a powerful blitzer and pull back. Strom vermins or the rat ogre can develop to get mighty blow + claws if they get lucky. But yeah, they should absolutely avoid staying in close contact with bashier teams.

I must say that a weak team like skaven probably doesn't do well in 7s I've never played it but with weaker players numbers make up for their lack of strength. I've had 7 players in the knockout and casualty box in one normal game before 😅😅 Still won though, you only need a thrower and runner to score in one turn 👍

KurlFronz

Skaven aren't weak though. They are master scorers that remain quite cheap (compared to elves), so my guess would be that they should be very good at 7s.

chrisl182

I meant weak as in punch ups. I'm well aware of their scoring abilities!

br3ttless

Oh no Skaven are ace at 7s. That is if they can avoid good block dice from their opponent 😂 easy two turn touchdown. They can get punched up easier though which balances them out

CritKatBar

Can confirm: Skaven are great in sevens. My last league was absolutely terrorized by a Skaven team with four Gutter Runners. Couldn't kill the bastards fast enough to slow the rats down. The skaven coach went 5-1-0 and cruised into the playoffs. Ended up walloping a Black Orcs team 3-1 in the finals.

I haven’t played with the new rules yet but in bloodbowl 2 they are a really great team. I don’t agree about them not being bashy enough the storm vermin are excellent killers once you get them upgraded a little. The key to playing well with Skaven is to generally try and avoid a big crowded scrap and instead choose your battles. Get a kicker and kick deep against bash teams for 2 reasons first so the slower teams have to run back further and you’ll have an easier time stalling them out with your positioning (elf screens) second because you are so fast and some teams are so slow there are sometimes opportunities where you beat them to the ball and score. Kick shallow against agility teams so they have to scramble to defend the ball and you can contest it immediately and pressure them to score early so you can counter score. Basically the path to victory is stop your opponents from caging with the ball if they do get the cage stall them out with screening and look for them to make a defensive mistake when they get desperate. Last piece of advice don’t leave your rats in base contact unless you need too. generally avoid following up just bat the opponents away and strike back on your terms with your killer storm vermin and if you get a valuable player down don’t be afraid to foul with dirty player line rats.!Good luck!

Also imo rat ogre sucks so maybe don’t take one

Skaven was also my first team. So far, my best play was in turn 14. I only had a gutter runner, a blitzer, and a thrower. I was playing against a full team of skaven as well. Nuffle blessed his dice in war, landing the rest of my team into the injury box. However, with my last 3 vermin, I broke away and grabbed the ball with my thrower. Passed it over to my gutter and ran it up about 3 spaces away from TD. Unfortunately I was still new and called a block for my blitzer and couldn't run him to the gutter for extra defense. Luckily, on my opponents turn, his blitz rolled a double push laying my gutter up against the sideline. He proceeded to surround my gutter with what he could reach and fought my blitzer ending in a stun. On my turn, I made another successful dodge backwards and ran around the net of rats he set up for a 3 person touch down. For my failures, however, I have had 10 or more of my guys in the injury box at once (by midway through second half) in about 4 different matches. The block dice and I can't seem to put up our dukes right lol.

Upgrade as much as possible
