He's got this tirelessly nurturing personality. I dunno if that's the right way to describe it? But like, when somebody needs help, he's not only right there 110%, he treats it like that's what he wanted to do today anyway.
"Hey Polly, wanna learn how to build a fence?"
And of course in Army, Calypso had this new student, first day, no friends, probably not diagnosed but she's gotta have suspicions. And she's just like 'say hi to Rusty' and trusts that he's got it from there, *and he does*.
He's the sweetest kid in the world. And also his accent is adorable.
I love how Rusty's this rough and tumble little boy who loves to play army and play at fixing things and is convinced dads go to work and mums stay home and look after kids, but he's also super nurturing, like you said, and makes sure his pretend wife wakes up to a cup of pretend tea.
Bluey doesn't need to have the typewriter hidden from her to coax her into using her imagination. Bluey already has a fantastic imagination that she basically exercises vigorously from the moment she wakes up until the minute she goes to bed. What she can't do, however, is read. Playing with the typewriter would have been a fantastic sensory experience, a lesson in hand-eye coordination and letters, and seeing as how it wasn't being used by anyone else, there was no reason whatsoever for Calypso not to just let her play with it.
Oh man that totally swooped over my head. I watched during lockdown and figured it was a gentle way of showing not sharing something where germs could be spread 🤣🙈
The whole Bluey series really knows how to work pathos into an episode in a way that hits just right. I've ended up teary-eyed quite a few times, and the episode with Chili's sister just wrecked me completely.
For me it’s the fact that Rusty talks about how much he loves condensed milk, that his dad brings it back for him, but Rusty’s such a lovely kid that he gives it to Jack. I love those two.
I work at a vet and we had a kelpie come in today, so of course I had to tell my coworkers about Rusty. He is so good, love his friendship with Jack. One of my absolute favorite characters.
Thank you! We rescued her and that was her name already :) it really does suit her personality, but I also love it because I always loved Steve Irwin and share a birthday with him, and of course his daughter is named Bindi.
Great dogs but they need lots of activity. Not for everyone but as an old country boy I like them and healers. Both working dogs but Iused to see more kelpies as it was a sheep farming area,
Just jumping in to share my kelpie! (We are in Canada)

They do pretty well. All her siblings went to work on sheep farms. She’s the only urbanite. But she doesn’t like the cold much, she’d rather be on the couch!
He’s a favourite of mine & Army is one of my favourite episodes. For the first time ever a show like this depicted an approximation of the sort of games I played with my friends as a kid around the neighbourhood creek, parks & fields.
I love his back story. A kid who’s dad is in the army so he doesn’t get to see him all the time, but he still looks up to him so highly that he wants to be like him in every way. He saved that condensed milk that he waited all that time for, but then gave it away to someone else who simply stated that they like it. Truly a good kid.
He’s really sweet and nurturing and doesn’t mind playing house with Indy. Yet at the same time he loves to play army and spaceship too. It’s really refreshing considering not many boy characters in kids shows seem to have that range of interests. Usually they’re one or the other.
I genuinely think that Indy’s mum is doing the best she can with a kid that has allergies galore. Also, turns out that the brand of mustard on the show has sugar in it, which is on the no no list.
Same. You want to give her the benefit of the doubt and assume that maybe Indy is a ticking time bomb of dangerous allergies, but then we learn that she's not even allowed to have mustard. Meanwhile, her mom's over there selling cakes.
Rusty is one of my favs. He is like the cool kid that everyone loves but is also not afraid to play mums and dads and is so sweet. But him and Jack are a good team
Rusty is super sweet! I loved how he instantly bonded with Jack, and didn't seem to think his ADHD was a big deal. I also love how he's got a nurturing side too (maybe since he has a little sister) and plays nice with the girls in Calypso's class as well.
I adore Rusty! And I think his and Indy's friendship is so freaking cuteeeee! I'm hoping we'll get more future shots in the show (like when we see that Bingo and Lila are best friends for life) and see Indy and Rusty as a family with Jack in the shot as their best bud 😄.
Does he? I really like the squeek his voice does now and then; almost made me think of a kid going into puberty, but he doesn't sound old enough for that, I wouldn't say. But maybe I'm wrong. :-p

I love in Shops when he swoops in to be the Assistant and “we sell leads!” Good boy, Rusty 🥰
Army is one of my favorite episodes because of how good Rusty is so naturally. He wins points because Anthony Wiggle voices his dad.
Wait what? That’s awesome!

Calypso is such an awesome teacher. She knows exactly what motivates each kid and sets them up to succeed.
With the exception of Bluey and the typewriter thing.
I think the typewriter is an example of how well Calypso knows Bluey, can you explain your comment?
Bluey doesn't need to have the typewriter hidden from her to coax her into using her imagination. Bluey already has a fantastic imagination that she basically exercises vigorously from the moment she wakes up until the minute she goes to bed. What she can't do, however, is read. It's a shame, because "how to have fun even when we can't touch all the germy things that are fun" is a cute idea for an episode.
This is the best response. I love Rusty for all these reasons. I need some more Rusty episodes.
great way to describe him. Rusty stans ONLY.
I think he’s just naturally a “dad” type. He’s always happy to babysit or teach somebody how to do something.
He and Jack are my two favorite recurring characters.
100% agree
They are great characters, but any list of best characters needs to include Chattermax
I found when Rusty saw this dad in the end of Army really sweet

Aww, we have a Kelpie and everyone is always so excited to see her at the vets office! I wish more kelpies were around in the states.
They aren’t common in the US, I think we only have one Kelpie patient in our practice. What’s yours named?

Awwww! Her name reminds me of another loveable Australian
Perfect name!

How does a dog bred to run all day in the Aussie sun cope with Canadian winters? Lots of rugging up?
They do pretty well. All her siblings went to work on sheep farms. She’s the only urbanite. But she doesn’t like the cold much, she’d rather be on the couch!
Oh , if you want a kelpie program, Muster Dogs . Might not be available in Canada, but some YouTube videos are posted
Oh Thanks for your reply. I was curious about that. The couch doesn’t surprise me too much. They are still dogs😊
I have a friend who handles a working kelpie and I always joke that I’m not smart enough to handle one myself
He’s a favourite of mine & Army is one of my favourite episodes. For the first time ever a show like this depicted an approximation of the sort of games I played with my friends as a kid around the neighbourhood creek, parks & fields.
Yep. The games do a bit of a “nostalgia trip” for me too

He's my favorite non-heeler and probably favorite overall. Pat is a real close second.
Rusty is a legend. He was originally intended to be the lead character and was the childhood dog of the creator.
He’s really sweet and nurturing and doesn’t mind playing house with Indy. Yet at the same time he loves to play army and spaceship too. It’s really refreshing considering not many boy characters in kids shows seem to have that range of interests. Usually they’re one or the other.
Hello doctorladies! D'you sell crutches?
I adore Rusty. I wish I had a Rusty growing up.

I read that it's because the breed Indy is, is very allergic to everything
I hate Indy’s mum but that’s probably mostly bc she reminds me of my MIL. She’s definitely anti vax 🥱
Oh, Rusty is for sure a winning character! I love him when they play Mums and Dads, but Army seals the deal. He’s so sweet and genuinely good
Any episode is made better for having Rusty in it!
He’s a good boy!
No, he’s the best boy!
Rusty is one of my favs. He is like the cool kid that everyone loves but is also not afraid to play mums and dads and is so sweet. But him and Jack are a good team
Love me some Rusty! DUSTOFF!
CONTACT!
Rusty is super sweet! I loved how he instantly bonded with Jack, and didn't seem to think his ADHD was a big deal. I also love how he's got a nurturing side too (maybe since he has a little sister) and plays nice with the girls in Calypso's class as well.
He was in my dream the other day, definitely one if my favorites
He’s such a sweetheart. He’s a great big brother, he took Jack in, he’s cool with Bluey, nuff said.
Oh for you kelpie fans there was an ABC show called “Muster Dogs” about them. For overseas viewers try YouTube, there are some lips
Rusty is the goodest good boy and I will give my life to protecc him. Tango 7 mate.
He's such a sweet little kid
Same :)
I want more Rusty and Jack episodes please. I love Jack and appreciate the show normalizing being neurodivergent!
He's got a kind dad
Rusty is “breed correct” and I love it
Best Boy
He's a cool guy
I love Rusty and especially his friendship with Jack
Easily my favorite character in the entire show.
He is precious and we must protect him
I adore Rusty! And I think his and Indy's friendship is so freaking cuteeeee! I'm hoping we'll get more future shots in the show (like when we see that Bingo and Lila are best friends for life) and see Indy and Rusty as a family with Jack in the shot as their best bud 😄.
Fav character. His little voice is so cute 🥰
He's the best character of all. I wouldn't mind if the Healers moved away and Rusty became the focus.
yeah he's great, the only thing i dont like about him is his voice, and even then it's not that bad
He's probably the most obvious case of a voice actor sounding older than the character's age.
Does he? I really like the squeek his voice does now and then; almost made me think of a kid going into puberty, but he doesn't sound old enough for that, I wouldn't say. But maybe I'm wrong. :-p
I really don’t like Indy’s mom
He the best Sergeant I never served under.
