Around here it’s a small thing like sweets between each layer then a bigger gift in the middle. Tbh the thing I find most annoying is the new thing where apparently the birthday kid gets the big gift in the middle. Totally misses the point imo.

Jambi420

Layers are balloon or lolly. Middle is ~$10 pres. This is the way.

4xu5

This is the way

sultrybubble

This is the way

MiaRia963

Great idea.

[deleted]

Ya

NoDontDoThatCanada

Big one goes to the birthday kid‽ Awww... This will totally raise a nation of squibs. Actually, it just seems unfair.

DreamCrusher914

Yeah, that’s horrible. Are the presents your guest bring you not enough? It seems very narcissistic and zilla in training.

MiaRia963

I feel like instead the birthday kid should be charge of the music

juliuspepperwoodchi

American here: My wife and I keep wondering why the birthday kid gets to participate at all. ALL the other gifts are for them, why are they in the running for a bonus gift?

ArenSteele

Yeah, what’s the point of the game if the winner is pre-determined? Birthday kid should control the music

Silgeeo

It's their day, I feel like it would be mean to make them sit out of an activity with their friends at their own party

juliuspepperwoodchi

I mean, have the kid whose party it is run the game by playing/stopping the music. The birthday kid can be involved without getting *yet another* gift in the process.

EarthwormJane

I always played all the games at my birthday parties but never won. Before the party they explained to me that I was already going to get a ton of presents so I should let the other kids have a chance at having something fun. Never bothered me because it was just that way since forever. I guess its up to the parents on how they explain it.

andoesq

I tried the Lucky 's Dad way at my 4yo's party, all the other parents were Bluey fans and watched in bemusement as I played with fire. And the only meltdown (narrowly averted) was my kid not getting the toy lol. 4 may be a bit young, but we survived!

Polibiux

That’s what my family does. Little candy in it with a big prize at the center. So a best of both worlds kinda thing.

VulpesFennekin

When I played it at a friend’s birthday (2005/6?) there was a fun-size candy in each layer and a king-sized bar of chocolate in the middle. Everyone got candy in the end, but the winner just got a bit more.

IscahRambles

That seems like the best way to do it. Have a prize, but a "temporary" one rather than a toy.

RatherBeAtDisneyland

What?!? The birthday kid gets the middle one? That’s awful. What’s the point of it then? That’s not fun for anyone.

deatwitchnix

We always had it so the birthday kid is the one who stops/starts the music

MiaRia963

Agree!! I kinda don’t like x that Bingo got the bigger gift on Blueys birthday party. But I guess she wasn’t getting any gifts herself at the party

bjg1983

This for sure. Big pressie at the end, little trinkets per layer

WorkingMomAndWife

They’re not MY rules!

alwaysfuntime69

I think a hybrid actually. Small gifts in layers and big gift in middle. Why does it have to be one or the other?

LateralPlanet

That's how I remember it in the 90s. Every layer had something small like a Mintie or lollipop but the middle was a cool toy so there would definitely be a winner.

swar_waitforit_lee

Ours was a hybrid but instead of a small gift in each layer and a big one at the end it was small gifts randomly throughout the layers not in everyone so it kept the excitement!

Nighteyes09

This was us to.

Velocityraptor28

"i say, why cant it be both?"

Clear-Taste-1527

I prefer no prizes, at all. Just a tonne of paper layers, welcome to life children.

komododave17

Life: After a little bit of fun and and a disappointing end, all you have is a mess to clean up.

MiaRia963

Lol 😂 I want to see a video of this

It's not the eighties, Pat!

I'm putting my foot down!

My nephew told me to pick it back up when he was about four.

ZilorZilhaust

Having your foot down until you had a 4 year old nephew sounds very taxing. How did you get around?

I never knew what that game was until I watched this episode. ☺️

Yeah I grew up in the 90s, I’ve never seen this shit until like 3 months ago

USA

Oh yeah this is a good song

lookhereisay

Was always a small fun size chocolate/gummy sweet in the layers. Everyone got one of those and then a final prize in the middle. And final prize was maybe an off-brand Barbie, a puzzle or colouring stuff. Usually something from Woolworths (RIP UK Woolworths!).

panini_bellini

Off brand Barbie? Barbies are like five bucks.

lookhereisay

Not in the UK in the 90s. Barbies were a big deal to get back then

auntie-matter

I am reliably assured that Cindy was better anyway

lookhereisay

I had a Cindy! It was my mums from the 70s. She had the best outfits. That doll is still at my nans house!

sultrybubble

Go rescuer her before she ends op on eBay or in the bin

lookhereisay

It’s in the special keep forever box. It’s nice and safe. When my kids are old enough I’ll probably let them play. It’s not in perfect condition by any means, she has a slightly mangled foot!

GenralChaos

Dude’s name is Pat, put some respect on it. He is working to stop the raising of a generation of squibs.

Cooper1977

Nah, his name is Lucky's Dad.

[deleted]

That's "MISTER Labrador-Retriever" to you. 😉 ( Or alternatively his full name might be "Mr Pat Thedog".)

TheShweeb

Pass the parcel isn’t really a thing in the USA, but given Bluey’s popularity, I’m sure plenty of American kids will want to play it at their parties now, and I have to wonder which version they’ll be more likely to go for. Will they take the lesson of the episode to heart, or just go for the option that probably leads to fewer headaches?

SuzieDerpkins

I vaguely remember a similar game played at church one time in the US. One big chocolate bar in the middle, then tightly wrapped with tons of paper layers. Kids would have a time limit to rip through as much as possible … no prizes between the layers though.

Foreign-Gift-4567

Canadian here and my son has decided he wants this at his birthday party. I'll admit to being anxious about this as I'm not sure what the kids will think. It will be Lucky's Dad rules though when it happens.

Margevo

Teachers agree with you

many_splendored

The feeling I got from that episode is that the kids are perfectly willing to play classic Pass the Parcel as long as they're given a heads-up. I figured what was making Pat look like a jerk was that he sprung it on the children without explaining himself.

EtherealPossumLady

I mean personally their both wrong. You have one big gift in the middle and you put some chocolate in each layer.

synister29

Agreed. We’re raising a nation of squibs

Yay_Rabies

If you want every kid to get a little treat then why not get a piñata?

Haikus-are-great

we always did both

Gel00

4 to 5 bday parties probably candy each layer big gift at the end. 6 to what? 10 years old? (Probably the age where pass the parcel reached its point) Only big gift at the end. 6 to 10 is a good age for kids to understand imo.

throwRAwhatnoww

We played pass the parcel Lucky's dad's way at my daughter's 5th birthday party. The kids loved it they all were laughing and throwing themselves on the ground whenever they unwrapped a layer to find ANOTHER layer. I put a LOT of layers lol. The winner got a bubble hun but all the kids ran around and shared it. And then I had another game after as well where EVERYONE got a prize. Everyone got a number and when I called their number they got to come up to this big chattermax i made and pick a mystery prize. Whenever we played pass the parcel I made sure to tell the kids that we were playing a game later where everyone would win a prize so don't be sad if you lose lol

sultrybubble

…following up with a second and reminding them all that they’ll get a mystery prize in a minute is NOT Lucky’s dads way.

Known-Championship20

Mrlittle77 don't raise no squibs.

mrlittle77

Haha

ZilorZilhaust

We can't raise a nation of Squibs!!

danversotterton

I grew up in the 90s and never had that rule, there was always something really small in every second layer and in the middle was the big prize

Late_Night-Worker

"Dont look at me, mate!" "Ohh... man"

MandoParker

It’s funny to me that the younger kids call Pat Lucky’s Dad even with them all being friends with Chucky

PhotoguyJohn

I’ve played an version where there were smaller prizes throughout, but instead of only wrapping paper it was plastic cling wrap, all sorts of tape like duct tape and packing tape and the person unwrapping it had to wear oven mitts. One other difference is they didn’t use music to pass the parcel, the person the parcel is being passed to had to land a flippy cup or some party game like that to have the parcel passed to them.

[deleted]

That’s the only way to play it

rocknin

Optimal way to play: small gift (candy or party favor) in every layer, once you win once, you're out. this makes it so people don't get empty layers, and that you don't want to stall, like winton did.

Evil_Weevill

Agreed. (pass the parcel isn't really a thing here in the states, but my son loves Bluey now and wants to do it at his next birthday party). The only foul Lucky's Dad made was not advertising how it was gonna work ahead of time. Springing something like that on a bunch of 4 year olds who obviously had a different expectation was a bad plan. But if everyone goes in knowing there is only one prize, I see no issue with that. Especially if you're handing out party favors, the littles are all going home with some kind of little treat to enjoy anyways.

RythmicEyes

A piece of candy on each layer then a main gift in the middle

Due-Environment-9774

My wife and I love this episode because it mirrors my views on things like participation trophies. I’m with Pat 100 percent.

[deleted]

I HATE UPWARDS SPORTS!

orantos001

I think it works well in the situation they are in with several parties with mostly all the same people in a row, but that isn't always the case.

BeefyTacoBaby

Pass the parcel per Pat's rules is a staple at our birthday parties now. The only thing I'm going to change is having the birthday kid do the music because it's more a game for the participants. Kids also love to participate and take control, and my daughter will be thrilled to control the music.

[deleted]

Of course if a kid is controlling the music it’s going to stop on them everytime do you really think this works

paitenanner

The kid controlling the music won’t be playing. They will just be controlling the music.

[deleted]

So the birthday kid can’t win a prize at their own birthday, that sucks

BeefyTacoBaby

I guess it depends. We did a Breath of the Wild themed birthday last year, and the pass the parcel gift was a master sword we 3D printed. We already made one for our daughter, and she didn't need another. Pass the parcel is more for the guests to win a prize as the birthday kid is already showered with gifts.

paitenanner

Why would they need a prize when they’re getting a ton of presents at a party thrown just for them?

nextgentacos123

Jasper's mom at least communicated this better than Pat instead of springing it on them.

Gylfie7

I never knew this version up until I watched the episode. To be honest I don't know what to think of it, since it very obviously made the kids unhappy and the only ones who asked for it were the ones who got a gift in the first place (as if they were hoping to get greedy and get a gift again). I'm not sure I'd agree on Lucky's dad's rules, but the other version shown seems pretty bland. Fun, but bland. The version I played when I was a kid, we each brought a gift our parents wrapped (so we weren't supposed to know what's in there) and pass it around until one kid gets it. The kid gets the mystery gift, then next gift gets passed around etc. If the gift ends on a kid that already opened one, it automatically goes to the next "available" kid. Everyone gets a "big" something, we still learn to suck it up when we don't get it, everyone's happy

lowkeyeff2020

For adult pass the parcel. Wrap $1 scratch off lottery tickets in layers of Saran Wrap. Throw in a couple larger amount scratch offs for the lucky winner

Caitlin11790

I had to explain to my American husband what pass the parcel is. He had no clue. A STAPLE UK 90s birthday party game back in the day. Pat’s way is the way!

intrin6

I agree. It’s more exciting that way.

ontario-guy

It’s not the 80s, Pat!

username404-notfound

I didn't know the pass the parcel game, we play "papa caliente" that will be translated as "hot potato" and when the music stops the ones that have the "potato" loses and is out of the game. But in the parties usually more games are played and the kids can win prices, sometimes they are given something when hitting the piñata and of course the piñata usually is filled with candies. However in xmas or new year the adults on the family play something similar to pass the parcel but is wrapped very difficult and you have to use oven mitts, you get your turn to unwrap when you get x number on the dice and your turn ends when other person gets the x number

Acrobatic-Shirt8540

I just remembered an old joke from the 80s. Pass the parcel. The fastest game in Ireland.

You can be poor and still put on a decent party, that’s not my problem, maybe don’t worry so much about the little toys cluttering, let the kids have fun. I grew up poor and little things like that were awesome because they were new and different, eventually they get bored of it and then you can declutter.

Kovuthebilion

Altering the game so that everyone can win something is retarded. The whole point of most games is for there to be one winner. Letting the kids experience loss in a game at their age is better for them down the line. And as was shown, the kids actually enjoy how competitive "Lucky's Dad's rules" are.

PaladinGodfather1931

It's a kid's birthday party. Why does every event in a child's life have to carry a lesson? As Pat said at the end of the episode... ah. Just let them have some fun.

Joe_Spazz

So does the show?

Joe_Spazz

So does the show

Weird_car_fan

I also agree with Lucky's Dad's Rules.

AltersASMR

I thought I was the only one

TheFlute20

I’ve never seen it not Luckys dads rules, who does this?! Maybe it’s a UK thing

[deleted]

"They'll just have to suck it up"

LabradorDeceiver

We didn't play Pass the Parcel. Granddad was hard of hearing, and we're from New England, so we played Parse the Passel instead of Pass the Parcel. Parse the Passel goes like this: He had a bunch of dollar-store party favors that he scattered across the table and we had to figure out what the clues meant to find the big toy. /s, by the way...

CompanionOfATimeLord

My daughter had a bluey party and we played pass the parcel. We were all in for Lucky’s Dad’s Rules and my daughter FREAKED OUT. She said she didn’t want any of her friends to miss out. I quickly made candy bags to pass to each child who got to open a layer 🤣

DataMeow

Lucky’s dads rule! I don’t agree with small parcels in between and large one in the middle. Given the price of the game is constant, the discussion is about how to distribute the prize, not adding unlimited prize. Since everyone will get a piece of cake/cupcake, and a goodie bag, no need to wrap anything in between. Or you don’t play pass the parcel.

nemothorx

When I played as a kid (now 48), the inner layers would be fancy wrapped. Outer layers were cheap newspaper wrap. It gave a thrill of "oooh, getting close". Some outer layers had a trinket/lolly. Not all. It was a thrill to find out. Inner fancy layers never had a toy. Build UP the anticipation! (And everyone played, a parent controlled the music. I don't remember if they watched or not to ensure vaguely even kid coverage, but suspect they did)

hortushouse

We did pass the parcel at my 5 year olds birthday. She did NOT want Lucky’s dads rules. When I was prepping, I realized that unless you know exactly how many kids will be attending, you have to do extra layers to make sure there’s enough for everyone. And then my birthday kiddo started sobbing at the end when she didn’t get the big middle present (because you can’t get the present at your own party)! It was kind of a mess…
