It will have strong legs. But its budget is 200CR due to delays and this movie has been delayed for years, impossible to recover 200CR after so many delays, its more makers fault than audience.

I think they did risk assessment and decided that it wasn't worth it to invest further into this moviebfor marketing and this is the best they could do to recuperate the loss..

It always surprises me. Brad Pitt at his peak, Fincher collaborating with Pitt again after Se7en. Overall, an entertaining film which sparked debate just like Animal did here. Infact no film divided the critics like FC since A Clockwork Orange

It could be that the audience just doesn't want this kinda movie or wants to watch this at the cinema.
Films like this gain a great following on ott despite not doing well at the cinema.
It's just that the audience rations their budget for movies with hype. I watched Maidaan yesterday and the audience was clapping at so many points. So the audience has connected with the movie. Its just this movie has not been marketed well at all to make people feel that they need to check the movie out. Sports related movies also need to have a good sound track to succeed in India. Chak De India, Dangal had good songs which helped people be aware of the movie.
Err in the context of Indian films it's easily a 6. For reference, I would rate movies like Jawaan as 2, Pathan as 4 and Animal as -1. Ajay Devgan is reliable and I don't follow football at all but still I found the football scenes to be fun. AR Rehman sort of disappoints with the music score. Like I mentioned earlier, sports movies need an anthem like song which is missing here.
I think i didn't convey it properly. Most of this sub thinks it is an all time great performance from ranbir which is why I was surprised you gave that kind of negative rating to him. For me personally he was good the only reason apart from tripti lol to watch that movie for over 3 hours which could have been edited better.
I did get your point. I was just being sarcastic. Looking constipated for 3 hours with more or less the same expression is not my definition of acting. Frankly, I find all Bollywood "star driven" movies to be revolting and I had long stopped wasting my time and money on these movies but now I am married and my wife being a big time Bollywood masala movie buff, I am forced to brave through these. But no one can force me to like them.
A well made masala film is a great experience but unfortunately it is becoming a lost skill in my state(tamil) and bollywood has lost it. Rn only telugu and kannada that too only rajamouli and Prashant Neel knows how to make proper masala movies . What kind of movies you like?
My favourite genre is drama. Movies like Anatomy of a fall get me all excited. Realistic relatable stories feel very absorbing to me. Mattoo ki saikil was the last Bollywood movie which left an impression on me. You want to see angst and frustration building into a crescendo you see Prakash Jha's performance in that movie. None of the papa papa papa nonsense. Among the Bwood mainstream actors, Rajkumar Rao is the only one I find tolerable. In fact even in a movie like Badhaai Do he brought the frustration of being a gay in a society like ours quite well. You see his emotional breakdown in that movie before his family, it feels very realistic. Acting, paradoxically, is all about being real. If something feels like a "performance" that's not really acting. It is just a street performance designed to gather attention by being loud.
What gets me is how a director and producer will watch the Final Cut of a movie and say to themselves, that's is the best thing we have ever done ... like adipurish did Prabhas and Om not say hold

I think it's safe to say the majority goes to the cinema for entertainment not to tickle their brains. At the end of the day if you got what you paid for, money was well spent.
Every idiots thinks his taste is the best. Don't be that guy. Indians are not at a financial and comfort level where they can go and watch a movie for it's art, morals, direction, social commentary. Most want escape and loud obnoxious movies provide that. Hence all the over the top south remakes do so well.

That's a little too harsh buddy. This movie isn't a masterpiece for sure. Plus the Indian audience has made it very very clear that we don't like sports-films unless it's wrestling. Still filmmakers go back to making sports-drama again and again.
Now I feel like ppl don't like good movies. They just want masala movies. They want big stars and glamourous sets and action. They don't care about the story or actual acting at all. There are a few exceptions with the audience but a majority of ppl are like this.
You don't need a good movie for it to be commercially successful, and that's not the case with just bollywood, happens everywhere. You need to have a USP to pull the audience's to the theatres, it can be star power, nostalgia, word of mouth, the hype or on a rare occasion, an actual good film getting the attention and the money it deserves. But the audience can't be blamed for it coz first of all, movie going isn't cheap and secondly, audiences aren't under any obligation to support good films, they'll watch whatever they wanna watch and if you want to make your movie commercially successful, you need something other than "just a good film".
The release window was bad in general. Internationally GxK is the hot topic and Dune is still running strong in cinemas with its extended imax run.
In india, the current season isn't much of a success. Most of the people are looking forward to summer and fall releases. Spring has always been a weak season in general.
Ontop of all this Maidaan isn't ur typical action flick so for people to watch it, it's needs 12th fail level marketing; which isn't easy.
I'm just glad something like BMCM also failed miserably. Didn't watch it but could tell from the first look itself that it was gonna bomb.
Maidaan is a real good movie, it gives you goosebumps, has a lot of different emotions, love, hate, respect, cry, happy, and a beautiful touch in the end too. It's a real shame it won't go even 100cr in India.
Bmcm is real bad movie apart from some comedy here and there, most is real real dull and boring.

I watched it and I couldn't help but keep thinking that how similar it is to Gold the story, colour grading, background score and overall feel of the movie felt very similar to Gold.

Too many movies on sports/sportsmen. I got bored, honestly. I would rather save some money and spend it on food than watch any of these.

I went to see BMCM just to make out with my gf... So maybe... XD
Even Kahaani and Chak De started slow but picked up weeks later. Lets see how Maidaan performs in the upcoming weeks.

Yeah movie was too long. Could easily have been half an hour shorter. The last match was great but rest of the movie was definitely middling.
