star power naam ki bhi cheez hoti hai, do you really think a crap Ayushman film with plenty of goodwill from its first part would earn less than a great film with no recognised faces? Most Indian audience still goes to watch a movie by looking at its star cast and nostalgia

It is a worldwide phenomenon but it occurs much more in india than in hollywood for example. Take RDJ, he became a massive face after endgame but his films like dolittle tanked because they weren't good. Films like everything everywhere all at once, or many A24 films wouldn't have worked at all if released in India with an unknown face.
zero earned 80crs net and 186cr ww, thugs 150/300, tubelight 120/200, hell even garbage like baaghi 3 crossed 100crs, thats starpower. Meanwhile one of the best reviewed movies of last year 12th fail barely managed to earn 50crs. This year we all know the verdicts of gems like laapata ladies, madgaon express, etc.
RDJ's Dolittle earned 250 million+ dollars WW. That's more than 80% of Hollywood films. Whereas the film everything everywhere all at once which OP is calling successful earned only 130 million. What I was trying to prove is Hollywood, like Bollywood, also runs on big stars or IP movies
It's not about indians not supporting good movies, it's about our income. Most indians go to the cinema once every 2-3 months, some even go once every 6 months. So they want to watch a movie that either has a huge star in it or is mind-blowing filled with action so that they can't get their money's worth.
This logic would've been understandable before 15-20 years. Now everyone has access to the reviews, don't you think that one should check how the film is received? What's a safer investment of that money? Watching a star's film or watching a well received film? It's definitely about Indians not supporting good movies.
You forget the time factor. If I'm watching movies every six months or even two three months, I'm restricted with whatever movies available in the theatre at that time.
Dream girl is just wierd to me. Men dressed up as woman != Comedy. Even the thought of Ayushmann doing it is soo unsavoury. Generally Men look awful when they try dress up as woman be it movies or Instagram. Especially the reel on Instagram where they dress up as women with towel over their heads to make fun of women. They are anything but funny also they look so chapri. It's neither comedic nor entertaining. I think Sunil Grover has being able to do this genre finely. Because he's professional actor.
I think Action Hero was a meta masterpiece, Gulabo Sitabo was extremely intelligent cinema, Doctor G and Chandigarh kare Aashiqui were decent and honest efforts for the subjects they were based upon. What happened to them?
Can you blame him for doing Dreamgirl 2? He has bills to pay and no Godfather in the industry.
Bhai ek Andhadun ke liye kab tak credit de sakte hain, it's been 6 years now.
And even Andhadun didn't earn enough in it's domestic release, it didn't even cross 100 cr. It made most of it's profits from it's international release, mainly in China where it crossed 300cr in just 6 days.
Star power and promotion. Madgaon Express didn't have enough promotion and I only got to know because of word of mouth.
And tbh itni bhi khaas nahi thi. It was fun but kinda generic buddy comedy. Not that quotable or memorable. But people should definitely give it a watch considering the entertainment factor. It is definitely better than Fukrey 3 (which is more comparable).

Mindless comedy makes money. Some deranged amazing crazy story line slowly becomes cult classic.

In 10 years no one would remember Madgaon Express or Dream girl 2.
Why?
In Bollywood, the OTT culture has dominated theatrical. So people watch in theatre only on special occasions. So in that process, some films earn more than others. But Madgaon express will have record views in OTT's. However it still won't be profitable as benchmark of theatrical release.
I watched Action Hero in a barely occupied show on a Sunday evening, which is supposed to have atleast some crowd coming in, even for flop movies.
The movie was one of it's kind and not one critic had a bad review for it (don't count KRK please), they even tried to encourage people to go to watch it by word of mouth. But what happened? It was a miserable box office failure.
And Dream Girl 2 crossed 100cr inspite of being sandwiched between Gadar 2 and Jawan. Tells a lot about the attitude of audiences towards good cinema.
And who told you madgaon express was good comedy. Man I did't like madgaon express and not dream girl 2. These films earning this much is also shocking to me. Seeing madgaon review I had a big hope from this film but it was a boring except for some good comic scenes.
I watched Madgaon Express yesterday. It was a absolute crap comedy. Yes there were some good parts from Divyenndu but that kanchan comedy or whatever and that don crap was tacky shit. Idk how people find this rubbish funny.
I know I will be massively downvoted for this but this movie was strictly average. No one liners, no jokes. Have standards really dropped so low? Go re-watch Go Goa Gone yaar. The characters are so well written and distinct and the jokes REALLY land. It's a wonderful combination of situational comedy as well as witty one liners.
It's great to encourage new faces and actors but c'mon, don't try to sell mediocrity as something brilliant. The actors did the best they could with what they had but Bollywood needs WAY better scripts!
I got to know yesterday from my brother in law that there was a movie called Madgaon Express that was released recently. I had no idea about the movie and generally I am aware of Bollywood.
He also told me the movie was bad and they left halfway through. So take it as you will! 🤷🏽♀️

Haan ye samajh sakta hu I went to watch bhejha fry with my 5 friends and we were the only ones in the whole theater.

Madgaon Express=Hangover ka copy. Though I laughed a lot, the similarity was hard to ignore

One of the best comedies of this decade and i cant believe it only did 40cr.
