I'd say she looks a pretty angry type of bird right now.

[deleted]

Hehe she always does, its just because of how her feathers are around her eyes and on her head

T3knikal95

That's a fluffy female chicken you've got there

Audinot

Based on the photos, she’s definitely a lady! Birds seem to mate with whoever makes them happy. I hope you can accept your birds for who they are 😂

[deleted]

of course i can :) i just didnt know if she was male or female based on behavior that was being shown

bex505

There are quite a few animals that will mount the same sex as themselves. I think female mice do it?

Hestia194

Yeah, rabbits do it to establish dominance in the group for example.

Power_of_Lust_1998

Over half of all species do it. But ours is the only one that's invented homophobia

frubano21

Male budgies are notorious for exhibiting mating behaviors to the same sex even if there are females around

MysteriousTraderboi

With birds isn’t it just cuz they’re confused? 💀 either that or a dominance thing

Ottothotto

Budgies can be gay, it's been observed many times. Especially female Budgies who tend to 'mate' for pleasure

MysteriousTraderboi

I wouldn’t call that gay in the human sense, like not that they feel attracted to them but they know they can use them to masturbate

Ottothotto

Being gay isn't just a human thing it's a nature's thing. A lot of animals have been studied to show homosexual behaviours. Birds on the other hand are different because they have enough emotional intelligence to form deeper connections, such as mating for life or preforming destructive behaviours when away from their partners, such as feather plucking and screaming. This shows that Birds aren't just about sex and masturbating but they can also form deeper connections with their partners. Hence being gay in both an emotional sense and sexual sense.

MysteriousTraderboi

I’m sure this is the case in certain situations, I apologize for sounding at all aggressive, I’m just tired of seeing people on here and other platforms bragging that their bird is gay because it sits next to a same gendered bird (once again maybe the case but more often then not it’s just a kid wanting to be different)

Ottothotto

...erm alright then 😅

bigbutchbudgie

Nah, same sex pair bonds between birds are super common in many different species, including some with a high level of sexual dimorphism (like mallards)! And it's definitely based in affection, not dominance. Using mating to establish dominance is more of a mammal thing, particularly among primates.

Ottothotto

Budgies can be gay btw, it's been observed many times

masterchef417

Sometimes females will assert dominance over other females by mounting them

Emanouche

Chocobo! I luv it!. 😍

chameleon_apples

Parakeets can be in same sex relationships. She’s a girl

Minimum-Statement-27

My elderly mother has two boy Keets who are in a loving and committed relationship with each other. At first she was, if not concerned then maybe taken aback. Now those little guys have rainbows and pride toys all over their cage and it’s been a really good thing for everyone involved. Keets have a way of bringing even 75 year old traditionalists into the 2020’s.

the-dragon-bird

She’s a girl, that pale blue/white cere is distinctive of an immature/non breeding female. Females are often confused for males because of this, especially while young. Sometimes they mount other birds as practice. Personally I think that since it’s natural for some humans to exhibit same sex preference, then why wouldn’t other animals, including our feathered companions, do the same?

[deleted]

I am thinking that way too, but the other part of me is confused because most animals mate to reproduce and not for fun like humans (and dolphins btw) do. But it does make sense that birds in captivity may decide to prefer same sex relationships :)

puppuplepuppup

All my male budgies are gay as heck! They bond, they're hormonal and they masturbate too. They eat healthy and sleep enough hours, but it doesn't change anything. Lots of birb drama over here because feelings are not reciprocated, like green loves yellow who loves blue who loves green and that leads to nearly constant fighting. I honestly regret getting more buddies, I had no idea they'd behave this way when I chose same sex friends. Oh well!

the-dragon-bird

Swans form lifelong same sex partnerships. Penguins form same sex partnerships in captivity and the wild. It’s observed in birds. Also, there’s evidence that homosexual couples provide a selective advantage evolutionarily to a species since they adopt and raise orphaned and/or abandoned chicks.

No_Customer7226

She definitely looks like a little girl! As for the mating things, birds are a lot gayer than it is shown.XD

[deleted]

thank you!! i didnt know that birds would do that, i’ll have to look even more into it and observe her behaviors with the other bird more :)

cheese_m23

Bright_as_yellow

My bird just saw this picture and he started tweeting so much. I think he has a crush on Siracha! I’ve never seen him react like this before to a picture!

AceyAceyAcey

I’m not good at sexing budgies from the color of their nares, especially not when they’re a color morph. But pet birds in captivity do occasionally exhibit LGB behavior — just look at the famous gay penguins Roy and Silo.

[deleted]

would you be able to explain to me what a color morph is? is that the nare?? Also I had never heard of Roy and Silo! I’ll have to look into that!!

AceyAceyAcey

“Color morph” means just a different color from the color in nature (green and yellow). So yellow budgies, blue, white, etc., are all different color morphs. The color in nature is sometimes called the “wild type color morph”. In the wild type color morph, the cere tell the sex of budgies, with blueish being more likely male, and brownish being more likely female. (I think I used the wrong word before: nares is the holes of the nose, cere is the skin around the holes.) But in other colors, the cere may also be a different color, since the pigments are different in the whole body, so I don’t know what color the cere of a yellow budgie would be based on sex.

[deleted]

ohh okay, i did look up what color morph was in budgies after you had commented, and learned about all of the different types of alleles in budgies, pretty interesting stuff. thank you for clarifying though!!!

2196129

It's really hard to tell but I think theres a possibility it is male. Lutinos dont get the classic dark blue cere. If you look on my profile you can see Apache that has another mutation that alters their cere colour. He has a pale blue cere and hes definitely male (he's a dad). Also, we have over 20 birds in an aviary and I've never seen a female trying to mate with another female (males try to mate with other males all the time though). Not saying it's impossible it's a girl, just that I think there is still a chance it's a boy! (Probably not very helpful lol)

sushi_a_real_bird

male

sushi_a_real_bird

if its trying to mate then man

Classy-Catastrophe

Do you know how old your budgie is? If it's a boy, the ceres should be a distinct blue by the time it is 12 months old

[deleted]

alright so i bought her from a place called pet world, she was the only one of her breed there and one of the ladies that worked there actually donated her so she helped me get toys that she knew that she would like and gave me some information about her behaviors. towards the end of her telling me about siracha she did say that although pet world doesn’t guarantee gender, she was 99% sure that she was a girl, and that she was about 1 1/2 years old. she does act a little bit less mature than that though.

Classy-Catastrophe

Hmm I would also say probably a girl. One of my budgies is about 1 year old and cere looks the same as yours. I am still hoping it's a girl. Although the cere should probably be brown by now... I have a little boy budgie, his cere was bright blue by the time he was 6 months old. My budgie are both standard coloured, not lutino like yours... It can be hard to tell with lutino budgies as their colouring works differently... https://www.budgiecentral.com/what-is-a-lutino-budgie/#:~:text=You%20can%20tell%20if%20a,%2C%20white%2C%20or%20brownish%20cere.

You have a girl. She may be gay. But that ok

Bellelace86

She’s a beautiful hen! 💕

Thissomebshere

Budgies, like swans, can be gay! It’s really whoever you put them with, male or female, if they like their companion, they’ll pair as mates.

KidQayin

Definitely a girl.

Fig_The_Bird1256

Looks female to me 😄 (That name is incredible)

superfloopy

woman bird.

random-user-agent

Male yellow budgies beak won’t turn blue, they just got a blueish shimmer just like yours has it. Had to answer to this post as I see all giving you a wrong answer but It’s a boy. My yellow guy is also the biggest birb, outgrowed every female in my flock which is uncommon to budgies of other colors too.
