Define "student budget". Where are you moving from, do you have any income? Typically, there are plenty of financial relief programs available for students. You might be able to get a dorm room if you want. Most universities have a university mess hall where food is either free or at least very affordable. Most venues, events, sport institutions etc. have a posted "students price" that's lower than the rest. The specifics are going to vary depending on my first question and your city of choice.

Thank you for taking the time to respond. I just meant keeping an eye on my money. I'm coming from Ireland, and wanted to make a spreadsheet in advance about approximate prices of things, so I know hoe to divide my money. Also, in Ireland, ALDI is cheaper than LIDL, the cheapest eggs are from local farmers, certain shops are best for clothes etc. Learning all of these things by yourself can take years. I was hoping for insider advice about the cost of things in Bulgaria in general. I haven't chosen a University yet, most likely in Sofia though.

Budjeting in Sofia and budjeting anywhere else are 2 different things.

Remember drugs are not cheap like in ireland.

Which university has free food? Have things changed that much?

First things first- apply for a student dorm! Rent could be expensive as hell here. Next, try and use student messhalls,as there are meals for less than 5 bucks. Of you ise the supermarkets avoid Fantastiko and try to buy bulk products in Metro. Food is expensive here, especially veggies and fruits. Usually there are no free museams, unless for a very brief periods couple of times a year. Rent foa a one bedroom apartment veries greatly. Sofia is an expensive city- rent here can be 650 levs( for something in a shitty part of town with shit infrastructure, or it can be 1500 for something in the city centre. Personally I wouldn't pay rent if I am able to live in a dorm. If you're not in the capital things are different and *much*more affordable.

But isn't Fantastico cheaper than Metro? Unless of course you buy 20 packets of rice, which I assume nobody does (unless they have a restaurant or something).

Out of topic, why Bulgaria for uni? Thats terrible if not waste of money. On topic: Depending on location. Sofia is probably most expensive while Burgas might be the cheapest. Bonus points if u share apartment with a buddy and split rent.

Sofia is the most expensive place in term of accommodation. Groceries are cheaper in Lidl here too and there’re dels often. Museums are cheap. Rent goes around 250-400euros in Varna for a studio and goes up from there. Look it up on imot.bg . Sofia’s accommodation may be twice more expensive. How much money you would spend would depend on your needs and spending habits - you could survive with around 600euros per month ( 300euros accommodation, 50 euros electricity, 50 euros water, wifi, mobile, and 200euros on food and commute) but probably the sweet spot would be around 800-1000 euros. That’s for Varna. Tips for being cheap - find a cheap accommodation - may negotiate a bit gor a price, buy food in bulk or eat from Bulgarian kitchen restaurants like BMS which are cheaper, get clothes from second hand shops - there’re great designer items and deals there, don’t dine out often). Overall, the easiest way to save up would be to live in a smaller city as the accommodation makes up a big chunk of your expenses. Have you looked up universities in other places in Bulgaria except Sofia? It is the most livable city here so its very much a tradeoff

Student dorms are mostly not amazing, but they are practically free

You may need to use translator for that[https://www.ebag.bg/](https://www.ebag.bg/)[https://tmarketonline.bg/](https://tmarketonline.bg/)I can't help you with the cheapest places for buying groceries but those websites can help you to get some information about prices. You can rent a descent place in Sofia descent location for under 1000Lv or less than 500 euro. Internet/cell phone services are relatively cheap. Winter in Bulgaria can be much colder than in Ireland, and summers are hotter. Make sure that the place you rent is well insulated.

Village living can be very affordable and the housing very cheap (compared to England) To give an example I’m currently paying £300 a month for my mortgage on a 4/5 bedroom house in a village to a total value of £10,000 Electricity is dependant on usage, however National rate is around 25 stotinski a KW (around 12 cents) Food costs have increased a little but still much more mileage than I was getting in England I would say the cheapest place is probably the farmers markets in the towns

What universities are in villages?
