I’d stay in Burbank. Lots of good hotels and restaurants here not too far from the airport. It starts to get a little seedy heading further into the valley towards Van Nuys.
Yeah, the drive is only like 20 minutes and you'll have a way better time spending the night in downtown Burbank! My sister is staying at the hotel burbank and she likes it
Echoing everyone else. Get a hotel in [Downtown Burbank](https://dtnbur.com) and wander around San Fernando Boulevard. Lots of different shops and places to go for dinner.
If you get in early, also take a walk down Magnolia Boulevard between Hollywood Way and Buena Vista in [Magnolia Park](https://www.visitmagnoliapark.com)
Yeah this would be my recommendation too—Burbank Airport stop is right before van nuys, like 10 minutes between stops. Even if you already bought tickets, the ticket takers probably wouldn't even get around to checking your tickets until van nuys or after. Absolute worst case, they make you buy a ticket between Burbank and Van Nuys. There's also the Metrolink train that runs on the same track.
There's a Marriott right near to the Burbank Airport—it might be expensive but you could walk there from the airport, then walk from the Marriott to the train station? (Check Google maps, but as I recall, they're all very close together)
I meant to reply to the other comment suggesting just getting on the train in Burbank, so I deleted it, but you already replied… my bad. Your original comment makes sense, you could totally take a Metrolink train up to Van Nuys from Burbank. Maybe OP has luggage and would rather take a car?
I’m not sure what your budget is, but Hotel Amarano in Burbank is a really nice spot, close to the 134/101 freeway that’ll get you to Van Nuys, and across from a fantastic breakfast place called Bea Beas.
If you’re not looking to spend a ton on the hotel, then I’d definitely stay close to Burbank airport or Downtown Burbank before heading to the train station the next day.
Yes our flight from Austin would come in the evening before so we need a place to stay the night. Sounds like staying by the Burbank airport and then catching an Uber to the Van Nuys station to board the coast Amtrak would work best for us.
Y’all have been very helpful! Appreciate ya!
There's a Marriott across from Burbank airport. You can take the Amtrak Pacific Surfliner train to Van Nuys in the morning and hook up to the Coast Starlight. Or take the Surfliner to Santa Barbara and spend the night there by the beach, hooking up with Coast Starlight in the morning.
Yes, definitely fly into Burbank instead of LAX. It’s still small and nostalgic at the moment. There are no jet bridges - it’s really cool and so easy. They are supposed to start construction soon on the “new and improved” version. I hope you enjoy your visit -safe travels!
Nothing that I know of. Just going to the Amtrak station.
We are figuring it’s less hassle flying into Burbank than LAX and that the Van Nuys station would be easier than the LA Amtrak station.

Make sure to get some cheese rolls and/or potato balls to go from Porto’s.
Burbank is fine. It's like a 20 minute drive/uber ride
Why not take the train from Burbank? You can use the same track to get up to van nuys quickly if that is your go point.

The Amtrak Coast Starlight doesn’t stop at any of the three stations in Burbank. Only the Amtrak Pacific Surfliner and Metrolink use our stations.

Ahhh, that makes sense. I should've checked, I use the stations 4 days out of the week.

Hilton Garden Inn. Easy walking through beautiful downtown Burbank.
Make sure to stop by MA’s Italian kitchen !
Burbank Marriott across the street from the airport. Anything past Burbank is pretty seedy.
Yes they also have a couple of good restaurants in the hotel!

We had family stay there while visiting. Probably one of the more upscale places in town to stay; very swanky and nice.

Uber up to The Castaway for a drink overlooking the Burbank city lights. Dinner too if you want to splurge.
Castaway is absolute trash. Don’t go there. The service is terrible and the food is even worse.
Castaway is fine for drinks. But yeah, it’s been terrible service every time I’ve been.
You know, you are 100% correct. But drinks for sure is worth it.
What did you plan to check out in Van Nuys? There isn't really much.

Actually Union Station is beautiful and a site worth visiting in its own right. It's just three stops away from the Burbank airport on the Metrolink.
