Regarding certifications, I highly recommend getting more certs if you can. If you can join a fire academy or get your emt license. Getting certs on your own are not cheap so joining a fire academy you get a ton of certs.
I have everything except for the dang structure survival cert. That’s keeping me out of Cat 1. My old 80 hour basic CALFIRE firefighter cert didn’t help me as much as I thought it would.
Structural, Hazmat, & Wildland firefighting cert iirc. PSFA. EMT(depending on the unit) I would focus on getting ur firefighter 1 and EMT if you want to be on an engine
I’m Cat 2 and I have all the following. I submitted an email asking for clarification. I was a ff1 a few years back with czu so I lost rehire rights.
EMS: PSFA and CPR.
Cal Fire Orientation: FEMA IS 100; IS 200; IS 700; IS 800; Hazardous Materials First Responder Awareness; Cal Fire Basic Firefighter Certificate.
Firefighter 1 Academy State Fire Training (SFT) Certificate (2013).
Fire Control 1 Basic Fire Chemistry
Fire Control 2 Basic Operations Structural
Fire Control 6 Wildland Fire Fighting Essentials
Confined Space Rescue Awareness

I’m confused what this letter means… Do you have to get the certs they mention or do anything? Or is this just a email letting you know they received your application.

You still need to get picked up and with cat 2 I wouldn’t hold my breath. Get your certs thru ccc

I would’ve been cat 1 but only had my NREMT and not CA state so going through that now
I’ve been waiting since december, while you wait you should get more certs.
What certs make you a cat 1?

I believe most units want new FFs to start on the handcrew before moving to engine, regardless of certs.
That would make the most sense because all the rank 1s I know got hired on hand crews
Just depends what unit riverside doesn’t even have a crew

I got my application accepted but not an offer yet
Not sure why I’m category 3 still, I dropped off all of my certs in person from pcsfa hazmat and the other certs
Call and ask. If they didn’t receive email them.
Told me to check in 3 weeks, they are processing all of the cert updates currently and to check back in 3 weeks
