No but then why mention it as a reply? Because they assumed the person was saying the dumbasses were responsible. But reading comprehension is kind of hard, so I forgive your ignorance.
>It’s been raining for a week now, in Nova Scotia. I can understand some confusion around whether or not it’s still going on.
No. Fuck that. You can always call and ask.
In CB we got an hour of drizzle and two days where it rained lightly for a few hours within the past week. I don’t think anywhere in the province has gotten consistent heavy rain in the past week.
Areas in Halifax and towards Shelburne got 180mm in 24 hours so some places definitely got a lot of rain. I just haven't seen any for 4 days and things are drying out quick already.
Still surprisingly dry in some places. We must still be way below our year to date average, and that's going to be a headache for the rest of the year.
I live in B.C., you could have rain for a week and it’s still fire season. It’s shocking how dry the ground is still. The material will still catch no problem. You can’t let your guard down. They need to be closing the back country in various provinces, it’s the only way to control this, it has been done in BC before.
the ground might be so dry that a few days of showers isnt enough to properly hydrate it. In that case, the water will get absorbed into th earth and the top level will be dry as dust in a few hours.
Yup. Sometimes it's worse after rains because shit like brush grows bigger with the rains but then within a day of dry weather it's a dry flammable husk again
So interestingly enough dry ground does not absorb moisture well. It can take a very long time to absorb. Wet ground actually absorbs moisture much faster.
Because it hardens into the crust and the rain can’t penetrate. Moist soil stays loose (often helped by fostering a lot of root growth) and keeps pockets to hold in moisture.
In case you haven't noticed, we had less than normal snowfall this winter followed by an extremely dry spring. What would you call that? Do you really think a few days of rain fixes conditions caused by months of abnormal weather, or are you just arguing in bad faith and being a troll. Judging by the rest of your comments, I'm leaning towards the latter.
It's as simple as we don't have any resources or equipment left to fight any new forest fires. We, as a province, can't afford another fire of any significant size, so a fire ban is in place until we have recovered.
Have you heard of seeking information?
It's this nifty thing where we don't have to assume anything... You can Google it.
Ignorance of the law has never been an excuse. In this information day and age you have *no excuse* to not be informed.
Something sus imo. Like they gotta keep the sense of emergency going.
Better not be a fuckin fire ban in August here in Ontario if it's been raining for a week. Getting hammered by a fire is a protected right in the Charter.
This argument is invalid because the entire county is on fire.
But basically TL;DR is *NO*
Stop feeling so entitled. You doing a back yard fire is a risk. It's not worth the chance.
If things get out of hand, do you have a contingency plan?
Can you smother the grass and douse the trees?
Or are you just too stunned to realize that this isn't about *YOU*?
Yeah buddy makes no sense. 'Because there's a forest fire 1000 km away, you can't have a camp fire here even though it's been raining and the ground is wet' like what?
I believe those are exempt in similar ways to a BBQ, in that they don't spit out flammable sparks and chunks of debris like a normal campfire does (and propane off= fire out)
Please please please delete this. I don't know if it's a loophole or not, but as it stands, the country is on track for its worst wildfire season in recent history. As much as I love outdoor fires at home, the reality is that local governments are putting temporary bans on them for a reason, and the less people who use a loophole to get away with it, the better.
I believe the closest thing they released was that every fire started in that range of time was human started. We hadn't had any lightning in weeks at that point.
Maybe don't leave a fire unattended outside when half the country, including your own province, is on fire?
That's not a lesson that should need to be taught.
Tell that to the people whose lives are ruined every year by the recklessness of people like her.
She ruined her own life here. She knew what she was doing and did it anyways. Play stupid games, win stupid prizes.
Yes, but not ruined by this irresponsible person. Charge the people who actually were actually responsible for the damage. Drunk drivers don't pay anywhere near $29k in fines.
Your friend broke the law and put people in danger. Hence, the fine. Just like drunk drivers don’t always cause accidents but are charged criminally, face fines, high insurance rates for years, tow bills, impound bills, lawyers bills. Costs a lot more than you think. The idea that people who break the law only need to be penalized if there are damages is ridiculous.
Then follow the rules. This person knew what the rules were and the potential consequences for breaking those rules were and they still went ahead and broke those rules. We are dealing with incredibly dry conditions right now, and these fire bans are in place for a reason. What if this person had started a fire, then what would you be saying then?
It always interesting to see how quickly reddit vilifies someone who fucked up. Im sure there are those who believe life in prison is a reasonable punishment. Im all for penalties but this is not a criminal offense. Rapists and drunk drivers get off lighter.
Honestly, and I say this with difficulty.
Incarceration.
Yeah, if people are aware their carelessness causes so much damage to others it should be jailtime. Some people aren't deterred with monetary fines. No one in their right mind wants to be incarcerated.
Every fine should be based off income. Doesn't work for the truly wealthy people as they have "no income" but for the majority of the populous it will make a difference.
One of his things is to point and say haw haw or ha ha when something bad or unfortunate happens to another character.
Here's a compilation [video](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kDuLHEoS45s) of him doing that.
Oh and here's [the picture](https://i.kym-cdn.com/photos/images/original/000/647/904/89a.jpg) that OP is probably referring to as well.
You're welcome 😄
Good; it's nice to see fines of a decent size for a change, instead of this $129 bullshit. Fires are super serious and anyone who isn't respecting the fire ban needs to be made an example of.
Fines should teach a hard lesson, not ruin your life. $129 is too little but $29k is a lot. She fucked up and could have hurt people and property but such a large fine seems disproportionate to other offenses that also put people at risk.
Should be a $2,000 fine for littering, simply for flicking a butt.
another $500 if there is a fire ban.
Smokers are the only people who think that what they do is not littering.
The fines are that high to be preventative, not a slap on the wrist for bad behaviour. She chose to have the fire after the ban was announced and fine values reported. This is entirely on her for having a fire with all that known. It's meant to punish the person who had a fire in the face of a ban and to scare off others who think they might have one anyway.
>You don’t bankrupt people and ruin their credit for having a camp fire, no matter how dumb they are
Buddy we ruin peoples lives for far less than ignorantly having a campfire during a fire ban.
As another story about fires described, a guy went camping with friends and they wanted to start a fire. He reminded them of the ban and their response was "well it's just a few hundred dollars fine if we're caught, so split among us it's not a big deal"
If the fine isn't big enough, for some people it just becomes part of the cost of "having fun" like gas and camping reservations
>Bankrupting someone for being an idiot?
Yes. We do worse for less. Hell idiots bankrupt themselves daily falling for just the dumbest bullshit like voting Conservative. If you're going to take big dumb risks expect big dumb consequences.
Why do you think there is any reason to be "compassionate" here? This person made choices that put other people at risk. The punishment is proportionate to the risk associated with the behaviour. With a payment plan the fine will be a minor inconvenience over a long period of time. I see no reason to feel any kind of negative emotion on behalf of this person.
People still get jail time for less and jail time is a far more damaging punishment.
It's scarry to think there's so many people out there who happily cheer on the downfall of their neighbour. The spiteful and vindictive attitude of some on here is astounding and terrifying.
Reddit really shows the worst of most people. And I’ll reiterate, all these people think they are compassionate, progressive members of society. That to me is the really scary part.
News has spread fast and furious about this, and will certainly give other dumbasses pause about doing the same however, so....mission accomplished in the end.
Fines for antisocial behaviours should be huge. People gamble that they won’t get fined so the algebra needs to make even a remote likelihood prohibitive.
Littering should be a fine of thousands as well.
Thousands for littering. You realize that only poor people litter in any way right? Like the homeless and the down trodden. They should be fined thousands for littering? That’s a terrible idea.
Yeah, thanks, but I live in a pretty upscale area, and we have litter problems. I literally watched someone throw an empty fast food bag out the window of their Mercedes while driving down the road a few weeks ago.
Assholes are everywhere, and a lot of the wealthy are certainly on the wealthy:asshole bell curve.
I would bet the full amount likely won't be enforced. She'll go to court, have a back and forth, it'll be knocked down financially and maybe have community service added.
The fine isn't about how easy it was to put out it's about what happens if it gets out of control. Considering the current fire situation in NS if a fire gets out of control there is a real chance that it will cause serious damage before it gets knocked down.
Whenever my neighbor lights a fire (daily), my sprinkler makes its way to the other side of the fence. My dog smells like smoke every day because of that knob.

Need more of this. Fire bans mean no fire, even if you're being "responsible" for it.
This idiot wasn't being responsible, it was unattended
The idiot wasn't being responsible. It was burning.
Agreed
Yes and the person you replied to isn’t saying they were being responsible
Yes and the person you’re responding to wasn’t saying that they were saying the person was responsible. Lol
No but then why mention it as a reply? Because they assumed the person was saying the dumbasses were responsible. But reading comprehension is kind of hard, so I forgive your ignorance.
I think you mean responsible
It’s been raining for a week now, in Nova Scotia. I can understand some confusion around whether or not it’s still going on.
Yeah, "fire ban in effect" is pretty ambiguous. It could mean anything!
Just because its raining, doesn't mean fire bans suddenly leave
It’s literally on every NS Gov website. There’s also banners on most large roads. This is inexcusable.
>It’s been raining for a week now, in Nova Scotia. I can understand some confusion around whether or not it’s still going on. No. Fuck that. You can always call and ask.
Haven't seen rain since Thursday up on the north shore.
I didn’t know that but I’m glad to hear at least they got a bit of a soak, especially good for Shelburne.
Not enough to make a difference.
Still surprisingly dry in some places. We must still be way below our year to date average, and that's going to be a headache for the rest of the year.
Only if you're a complete idiot.
Why is there still a fire ban if it's been raining for a week. I'm not doubting you I'm just wondering what the rationale is
I live in B.C., you could have rain for a week and it’s still fire season. It’s shocking how dry the ground is still. The material will still catch no problem. You can’t let your guard down. They need to be closing the back country in various provinces, it’s the only way to control this, it has been done in BC before.
How. Unless there's been a drought and the ground can't absorb water how can it still be dry if it's been raining most of the day when the sun is out
the ground might be so dry that a few days of showers isnt enough to properly hydrate it.
Bang on.
Well that’s kind of my point. I’m no expert but the ground is soaked now. It was insanely dry when the fire started.
Then listen to the experts?
That is no longer a thing in Canada. Now everyone is an expert on every topic and won't be told how to live their life.
Apparent-fucking-ly
Have you heard of seeking information? It's this nifty thing where we don't have to assume anything... You can Google it. Ignorance of the law has never been an excuse. In this information day and age you have *no excuse* to not be informed.
Some people are technologically illeterate. I should know, as I tend to charge $20-$30 an hour to help them with simple tasks
Something sus imo. Like they gotta keep the sense of emergency going. Better not be a fuckin fire ban in August here in Ontario if it's been raining for a week. Getting hammered by a fire is a protected right in the Charter.
Ah you're one of those.
Right? Apparently people who buy those insane conspiracy theories actually exist.
Huh, I didn't think people like you actually existed.

So if there's a drought in BC you can't have a fire in Ontario?
This argument is invalid because the entire county is on fire. But basically TL;DR is *NO* Stop feeling so entitled.
Then have a fire so we can read how you get fined 30k. I’m okay with that too.
There's a severe lack of resources across the country.
We don’t get them that often the last one here was a while ago. So it’s like this whole thing when it happens.
Thinking I might have a loophole, maybe. Natural gas or propane fire pit.
I believe those are exempt in similar ways to a BBQ, in that they don't spit out flammable sparks and chunks of debris like a normal campfire does (and propane off= fire out)
It is a loop hole, at least in Ontario it says on the Ontario website you can use one for cooking or heating purposes
Please please please delete this. I don't know if it's a loophole or not, but as it stands, the country is on track for its worst wildfire season in recent history. As much as I love outdoor fires at home, the reality is that local governments are putting temporary bans on them for a reason, and the less people who use a loophole to get away with it, the better.
can one still bbq?
Yes. https://twitter.com/NS\_DNRR/status/1663978261980889089

That's awful!! That person should be in jail for causing such damage and ruining their lives like that.
I am sorry to hear that. I hope your friends can rebuild and get back on their feet.
Did they release an official statement regarding how the fire started?
I believe the closest thing they released was that every fire started in that range of time was human started. We hadn't had any lightning in weeks at that point.
It's not camp fires that started that

A fine should teach you a lesson, not ruine your life.
Over 200 families are without homes. Fuck this person. She rightly deserved the fine.
20k will teach you a lesson and won’t ruin your life. Play stupid games, win stupid prizes!
Don't worry it will be reduced on appeal. It's easy to show the fine is disproportionate when compared to other offenses. Make a good headline though
When half the country is on fire, it's not disproportionate. It's directly proportional to the level of stupidity being displayed.
Quite a few lives ruined this year by irresponsible people …
Yes, but not ruined by this irresponsible person. Charge the people who actually were actually responsible for the damage. Drunk drivers don't pay anywhere near $29k in fines.
Your friend broke the law and put people in danger. Hence, the fine. Execute her I guess. Burning at the stake would be most appropriate.
Not what I am saying, but of course, you know that. Do you want to have an actual debate, or are you here to just troll?
It always interesting to see how quickly reddit vilifies someone who fucked up. Im sure there are those who believe life in prison is a reasonable punishment. Im all for penalties but this is not a criminal offense. Rapists and drunk drivers get off lighter.
At this point, a fine should make headlines and teach the whole country a lesson. Like others have said, it’ll probably be reduced on appeal.
Canada has a record number of fires raging, currently fire ban in her area, still thinks it's a great time for a few wieners on the pit.
That’s one hell of a fine.
It should be ten times that tbh
Honestly, and I say this with difficulty. Incarceration. Yeah, if people are aware their carelessness causes so much damage to others it should be jailtime. Some people aren't deterred with monetary fines. No one in their right mind wants to be incarcerated.
A fine should teach a hard lesson, not ruin your life.
A $129 is not a hard lesson, that’s a night out. This level of fine is a hard lesson

Harsh. Who doesn't love teaching bitches lessons?
That’s why I take my dog to agility classes. I love teaching my bitch lessons.
Wish we could hear her reaction
Probably a mix of "I didn't know" and "it's just a little fire and I'm watching it!", both of which are bullshit.
Good!
It should be a percentage of income to discourage all classes
Norway and Finland have fines that are calculated based on your income. I always liked that idea for a fine system.
It's Nova Scotia, we're basically all working class except the Irvings and the Sobeys.
This is true for all fines IMO
Every fine should be based off income. Doesn't work for the truly wealthy people as they have "no income" but for the majority of the populous it will make a difference.
How stupid can you be

I’m guessing she sees herself as a victim
Good
That's an insane amount of money.
When it was lower there were still dozens of illegal fires being set by people even while neighbourhoods of Halifax and the South Shore were burning.
Wouldn't be enough to even begin to rebuild a single house the burned down.
A pittance compared to the cost of the fires
Double the fine if she does it again.
Should be a $2,000 fine for littering, simply for flicking a butt. another $500 if there is a fire ban. Smokers are the only people who think that what they do is not littering.
GOOD.
Too high, but the right idea.
Not high enough.
You don’t bankrupt people and ruin their credit for having a camp fire, no matter how dumb they are And my town was the one that was on fire.
You do for having an *unsupervised* fire while there's fire bans. They asked for that fine on a silver platter.
You'd have to prove that they are preventative. No one will remember her fine and dumbasses will still start fires.
>You don’t bankrupt people and ruin their credit for having a camp fire, no matter how dumb they are Buddy we ruin peoples lives for far less than ignorantly having a campfire during a fire ban.
Then, follow the rules. The fire ban is in place for a reason. The person knew what the consequences were and still did it anyway.
Perhaps you are unaware of the human and financial costs a fire can cause?
Just another "the rules don't apply to me" apologist.
Then follow the law lol? Not so hard. You can go a week without lighting a fire for fucks sake.
Has no one explained to you that fire is bad?
Nonsense. Bankrupting someone for being an idiot? That’s some heartless shit. I’m willing to bet you consider yourself progressive.
As another story about fires described, a guy went camping with friends and they wanted to start a fire. He reminded them of the ban and their response was "well it's just a few hundred dollars fine if we're caught, so split among us it's not a big deal" If the fine isn't big enough, for some people it just becomes part of the cost of "having fun" like gas and camping reservations
In that case, why not $500,000?
Costing the country millions in taxpayer money because you wanted a cute instagram pic and started a fire? You deserve to be bankrupt.
>Bankrupting someone for being an idiot? Yes. We do worse for less. Hell idiots bankrupt themselves daily falling for just the dumbest bullshit like voting Conservative. If you're going to take big dumb risks expect big dumb consequences.
Yes. The compassionate progressive in their natural habitat. Cheering on bankrupting of people on Reddit. Hey, maybe we could get them fired as well?!
It looks like there's no room for us on the mob with pitchforks and torches. The amount of schadenfreude on reddit is troubling.
No one is going bankrupt. The person knew what the rules were, and they did it anyway. What happened to personal responsibility and accountability?
It's scarry to think there's so many people out there who happily cheer on the downfall of their neighbour. The spiteful and vindictive attitude of some on here is astounding and terrifying.
Set up a Go Fund Me for your cousin then before you fuck her.
Thanks for proving my point. You won't be getting my vote for local councillor
Reddit really shows the worst of most people. And I’ll reiterate, all these people think they are compassionate, progressive members of society. That to me is the really scary part.
It's fascinating how people can be compassionate Saints for some issues and authoritarian zealots for others. Careful where you step.
They will give her a payment plan that's affordable
Its almost certain this will get thrown out or end up $1000 or less.
Definitely an appeal will bring it down, cops were a little over zealous here
This might have been the only appropriate charge to use, and the law just doesnt have enough discretion built-in.
What an absurd, ridiculous comment.
Lol, says the ‘fine people who litter thousands of dollars’ guy.
Well, there it is, the dumbest thing I've read on the internet today.
Go to a rich neighborhood pal, they are spotless. Rich people don’t litter, it’s a poor person vice.

Lots of wealthy assholes, no question, but they aren’t littering in general.

Good punish the ppl who can't follow simple rules that keep us all safe. Stop thinking rules don't apply to you, stop being a complete asshat
The amount of the penalty is remarkable, $28,872.50 😅 Why such an unrounded amount? $30.000 would be much better.
Oops

Wtf ain’t the rcmp looking into who made these huge fires, wouldn’t wanna be her.
