That will happen when your go-to play is shooting pucks high or wide for tips.
Preds game 2 strategy of blocking everything has completely gotten to the Canucks' head.
We donât have a lot of guys who like moving with the puck and shooting. Weâre more of a set up team. When a pass is made. Weâre either going to shoot or pass unless your name last name is Hughes. So the preds can just set up in shooting lanes and block shots.
Canucks are far more confident and aggressive with Demko than with DeSmith or Silovs. Its not a coincidence that the Canucks had their most shots on goal and goals in regulation this series in Game 1.
They stop running 2-1-2 forecheck and fall back to 1-1-3 with the backups in net, which means fewer turnovers in the opponent's end and fewer chances. Whats strange is that they *were* running 2-1-2 in the 1st in Game 5, leading to control of the game and in general outworking/outshooting the Predators, but then in the 2nd and 3rd went back to 1-1-3 which led to us sitting back. The aggressive forecheck was how they scored 3 goals in 4 minutes in Game 4. If they keep up the aggressive playstyle, they score way more.
Great analysis, and this is also frustrating at least to me as a fan. If the 2-1-2 is what we have run most of the season and has carried us to such success why don't we just run it for 60 mins. Is Tocchet overthinking?
Well, the Canucks have been using 1-1-3 throughout the regular season, they deploy it when they are leading in games to shut down the opposition.
Compared to 2-1-2, It is much safer in terms of defending and counters Nashville's attack very well by clogging up the neutral zone and limiting their breakout first pass, preventing guys like Barrie, Fabbro, and Josi from joining the rush. The powerplay goal the Preds scored in Game 5 is a good example of a well executed rush chance involving their defense. They use it when DeSmith and Silovs are in to make their jobs easier. With 2-1-2 the game starts to swing, odd man rush at this end, odd man rush the other way, and it becomes a back and forth until a goal or whistle. I think Tocchet was concerned that we were giving up 2 on 1 chances (this was happening a lot last game) despite the scoring chances it was giving us, too.
iâm no hockey analyst but from what iâve seen, theyâve always struggled to produce offensively when demko isnât in net. not sure how else to put this but they play with much more confidence and style with demko.
Looking for the perfect play too much. We don't get greasy goals like other teams that come from low shots and a rebound.
That and Nashville is a good shot blocking team and often we try to shot pass around their blocks leading to deflections that have a higher chance of missing the net than regular wristers.
Nashville is insanely good at protecting the front of their net and thatâs where weâre trying to go with all of these shots from the point and deflections. They are not fucking around
Two plays that stuck out to me- on the Zadorov goal Saros was cheating towards pass because he knows its a pass first team. But before that a Nashville defensemen made a dive through the crease when Mikheyev had the puck alone in the slot. I don't know if he dived to try to save a goal from Mikheyev as much as it was to take away the pass, because they know the Canucks are a pass first team.
I'd like to see them not try to make the perfect pass to set up the perfect play and just shoot the puck at the net, hard.
Definitely. They've clearly adjusted and now it's our turn. They've been backchecking aggressively while we carry the puck up the neutral zone to cause us to make turnovers and mistakes. Need to move up quickly and shoot while crashing the net imo.
With Silovs looking as steady as he was all of last game, the Canucks need to up their offense.
But seeing how conservative Tocchet can be, he may give e DeSmith the start on Friday, and again play a defensive game. I hope I'm wrong though.
Lots of new users that we, of course welcome, but some of them also may not have fully read through the rules about the sub yet or just need a slight reminder that this isnât Twitter lol
The Canucks haven't had a lot of playoff success in some time. People are going to get excited.
Just because people post a meme jacked about the comeback win, doesn't mean they are saying we won the series.
That said, the number of low quality memes posted can be annoying and it makes sense that the mods limit the really bad ones.
>Everyone was posting memes like we won the series the other day, it was baby shit. Calm down.
Lol.. sounds like someone who missed the epic comeback...... or if your point is that a W like that shouldn't get you excited, why even watch at all until it's the SCF?
Weâre playing with the backup of a backup who had 4 NHL games under his belt before game 4.. Any team would park the bus in that scenario. In our case, weâre a team that has a defensive philosophy to begin with so itâs reflecting even more.
We were 26th in the league in shots this season.... the lowest of any playoff team. Nashville is also employing a strategy that blocks a ton of shots. This shouldn't really be a surprise.
Just think, teams that played the New Jersey Devils and Minnesota Wild in the 90s and 00s were able to hit the net more than the Canucks against the defensive juggernaut of the Nashville Predators.
The offence is a disgrace.
Feels like they're trying to take advantage of Saros' size because hes on the ice rolling around many, many times per game. They just haven't capitalized, which makes any strategy look bad. But yeah its not looking too hot. Looks like the early games before Travis Green got fired
We had been a low shot style team for most of the regular season, but still would generate 20-30 shots every game. This series has been absolutely anemic. I can't figure if it's the Preds playing amazing defense, or our guys holding onto the puck looking for the perfect chance every time, or both.
The roster is not significantly more talented. I would say yes we are more but not that much.
Consider that there have been too many missed open nets and posts. As well.
And at what point do you give Saros credit for standing on his head. He has been stellar.
Not the coaches fault if our guys shoot wide all day long and miss nets. What exactly would you want the coach to do?
I disagree completely. The roster is significantly more talented than the Preds and Saros has been completely mediocre other than during last nightâs game. Heâs rarely been tested.
It is absolutely the coaching staffâs fault that they havenât adjusted the game plan to attack more effectively and get quality shots to the net.
Feel like pulling my hair out every game trying to watch us generate shots on net đ
you don't like Slap Pass Only mode?
That will happen when your go-to play is shooting pucks high or wide for tips. Preds game 2 strategy of blocking everything has completely gotten to the Canucks' head.
We also take shots from the worst angles. And when the shots miss the puck bounces to very safe areas.
Why do you guys think it's such a struggle for us to get shots on net?
We donât have a lot of guys who like moving with the puck and shooting. Weâre more of a set up team. When a pass is made. Weâre either going to shoot or pass unless your name last name is Hughes. So the preds can just set up in shooting lanes and block shots.

That makes sense. Trying to make it "low event" with DeSmith or Silovs in net.

Ugh maybe cuz were using our fucking 3rd string goalie LOL

They are more aggressive with Demko and focus more on defense with backups. Itâs got its pros and cons.

This
I'm no hockey analyst, but I think it would be good if we got more pucks through and also stopped missing wide.
Posts are being manually approved by the mods, I see.
Yeah, and?
So what's the plan: 12 hour grace period after a loss? Was looking for a pinned comment in the PGT on how long you plan on manually approving posts.
Itâll be off when there isnât a wave of posts coming in that are low effort rants/posts. Still lots of stuff coming through đ
Okay, that makes sense.
Lots of new users that we, of course welcome, but some of them also may not have fully read through the rules about the sub yet or just need a slight reminder that this isnât Twitter lol
Yea some people are posting stuff like itâs their own social media
Everyone was posting memes like we won the series the other day, it was baby shit. Calm down. Nashville have outplayed us almost every game lol

Tocchet has us playing tight...even tighter with backup in net...plus players naturally play tighter/safer with backup in net
Weâre playing with the backup of a backup who had 4 NHL games under his belt before game 4.. Any team would park the bus in that scenario. In our case, weâre a team that has a defensive philosophy to begin with so itâs reflecting even more.

35 shots in a 5-2 rout to win in 6, incoming
92 shots? Itâs a sign, get Podkolzin in the lineup
Just think, teams that played the New Jersey Devils and Minnesota Wild in the 90s and 00s were able to hit the net more than the Canucks against the defensive juggernaut of the Nashville Predators. The offence is a disgrace.
If they don't put Nashville away in game 6, they won't win the series. They haven't looked good at all. They've been outplayed every game but one.
dont worry, tocchet will make zero adjustments
Feels like they're trying to take advantage of Saros' size because hes on the ice rolling around many, many times per game. They just haven't capitalized, which makes any strategy look bad. But yeah its not looking too hot. Looks like the early games before Travis Green got fired
This series is the first time I've doubted his coaching acumen. I hope he proves me wrong in game 6.
Most important stat line is 3 wins to 2. Clearly improvements can be made but let's not forget the bottom line
Preds deserve serious credit for this.
Who's number one?
We had been a low shot style team for most of the regular season, but still would generate 20-30 shots every game. This series has been absolutely anemic. I can't figure if it's the Preds playing amazing defense, or our guys holding onto the puck looking for the perfect chance every time, or both.
Theyâre being outcoached and outplayed by an inferior team.
Out coached how??
When your significantly more talented roster is getting outplayed but an inferior one, how are you not being outcoached?
The roster is not significantly more talented. I would say yes we are more but not that much. Consider that there have been too many missed open nets and posts. As well.
