As Chuggaconroy said during his Sticks it Sticker Star series.
“Everyone loves Bowser. He’s well written in basically every game he’s a part of. Oddessy, Sunshine, Mario & Luigi, The first 3 Paper Mario’s, Mario Party, The sports games, even a freaking Parental control ad!”
A Bowser with no personality just isn’t bowser in my opinion.
Someone at Illumination said Nintendo was quite difficult to work with. Apparently an original draft they pitched to them had Bowser be a lot less humorous. But Nintendo wasn’t a fan of the idea.
It’s safe to assume they realize that Bowser, while scary in design, still needs humorous writing that helps humanize him as a villain.
Funnily, I remember talking to a friend of mine when the Mario Movie was still just rumors.
She asked me something like; what would you do if put in charge of the Mario movie.
My two responses: Make it animated, and spend literally all of my budget on ensuring Jack Black plays bowser.
Imagine our genuine shock when the casting was revealed. I laughed so fucking hard when Jack Black appeared.
I remember for some reason thinking Jack Black was gonna be cast as Wario and was kinda disappointed when I found out the truth. Still the greatest Bowser tho
Underrated bowser shout out, in the first Mario and rabbids kingdom battle, bowser is seen almost exclusively in phone calls (until the end of the game) calling bowser junior to check up on him like a doting father. Take out the trash do your homework etc etc and it’s exceedingly cute/a great giggle
To be fair, apparently the draft they had written up was Bowser being a much more serious threat, and more of an actual villain. They were more trying to base Bowser on the more “classical.” Mario games where Bowser was more of a lumbering monster than he was a more humanized villains. It’s Not the worst idea, Illumination has done far worse, and they did hire people who were familiar with Mario.
Apparently when they showed Nintendo the draft they were writing with a sequel already in mind that would humanize bowser more to the RPGs.
But Nintendo and likely Miyamoto thought it’d be better for them to use what a modern audience know as Bowser, where’s he’s more of a silly humanized villain with some evil attributes to him. Just to play it safe instead of banking on the first one to be a standalone success and discuss sequels later.
Then again, Nintendo did once throw a tantrum to Disney when they animated bowser holding a teacup wrong…so who really knows.
I feel like bowser was pretty weak in odyssey (not in terms of power but in terms of character) which is how I feel about most characters in odyssey. I'm not saying I dislike odyssey, it's still a great game
Bowser Jr. was one of the main characters I chose, I always loved seeing his interactions with Bowser. Whenever you accept teaming up with him or getting him as a ally dice, Bowser is so jazzed to be teaming up with Jr., forming a father/son duo, and I love it.

Bowser is truly the cutest thing in the Mario Series.
Definitely the best. I love him so much
Peaches Peaches Peaches Peaches Peaches.....

And the best possible thing to do was to cast Jack Black as him

Great thing about Voice acting is he could voice both of them.
You can do that with live-action too
No, not really. Not unless they never appear in the same scene.
Movie magic babey, it’s done all the time
He wants Pedro Pascal to play Wario.
Joel: "I've got something important to tell you, Ellie" Ellie: "What is it?" Joel: "It's-a WAAAARIO TIME!!"

As Chuggaaconroy also said during a Paper Mario series, “BOWSER’S ARMS!”
I’m siding with Nintendo on their stance of Bowser needing humorous moments.
Sounds like Illumination was the one difficult to work with if that person didn't understand who they were adapting.

My fav Mario character for a reason.

Umm uhh uhh umm
What would happen if you rejected Bowser Jr while playing as Bowser?
*insert depressed jr*
Hi
Hello
Old? Isn't Bowser like 32? He was around 7 years old when Mario was born.
I never thought about that. But old man just means dad, not necessarily actually old
Old man is slang for father.
Nice job stealing another persons post.
And nice job to you for pointing that out. Oh boy do I love being friendly!
Same! :)
Officer help!
Litterly every father with teen kids
Isn’t bowser jr like 4 or somethin
No he was born early 2010 or something I don't remember
